I want to upgrade from iPhoto '08 to '11.

I have an iMac 10.7.5. with iPhoto '08   Do I need to uninstall '08 before installing '11, and how do I avoid losing my existing photographs?

1. Make a back up. Always have an up-to-date back up especially before upgrading anything
2. No you don't have to uninstall iPhoto 08. The new version will simply overwrite the app. Then, when you launch it, you'll get a message about it updating the Library. Allow it to do so.

I have upgraded to Lion, and want to upgrade my iPhoto 8.1.2, but when I try it says it was not purchased at a MAC Apple store, which it was.  Then it asks if I want to buy 9.2.3, and I say yes. It responds with Product Distribution file can't be verified. Maybe damaged or not signed.  How do I get this fixed, so I can download the new iphoto's that are available.

How did you move your iPhoto library to the new system?  the recommended way is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Upgrading from iphoto 4 to i photo 7 on Leopard

How can I upgrade from iphoto 4 to iphoto7 (08) - and keep all my albums/ keep the dates the photos were shot - all that good stuff?
I am trying to upgrade from i photo 4.0.3 to i photo 7.1.4 - it keeps erasing all my albums and massively duplicating the size of my photo library ( I think it is duplicating photos) .. went from 47 GB to over 100 GB after it was through "upgrading" .. this happens when choosing the upgrade option after it says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library"
choose upgrade and then I wait over and hour as it goes through all my pictures - some out of order -- and I see some twice . . .
What is the correct procedure here? I just got an i mac, early 08, running leopard . When installing leopard- i chose the option to firewire to my old ti book (G4) to copy everything over . . . My I photo library was on an external drive -- so I've dragged that folder into the pictures folder of the new mac . it knows where the folder is ... finds it -- then just goes haywire .
    Help!?

    Nope ,
    didnt work --
the error seems to be happening at this stage (just a guess ) -- It says "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library."
then I choose to "import the photos" . . .
now , the first time I chose this - I thought I should pick the option not to import the pictures ... this was actually kind of great - cause I wanted a way to get all of my original photos out of their i tunes folders -- which is what this option did ... (good thing I had a backup!) Ironically - this time - Iphoto contained all of my albums and such --- but they were all empty -- and there were no photos! . .
ok -- so I tried to go back and import the photos -- would it know to put them in the right albums? nope .
    Ok --
so I deleted all of that - and dragged my backup i photo from external drive #2 back into external drive #1 . . went through the process agan - and this time i photo has all of my albums- but they are all empty -- and all the 34,000 pictures occur under an event that occur today . ...
    wrong - delete - start over again . .
so what do I do now?
I still have an i photo lib -- the same as the original -- I've kept that backed up . ..
should I reinstall i photo 7 (08) to wipe it clean and try it one more time ?
    Sould I just use i photo 4? - can I on leopard?
Is there a tutorial/instructions on upgrading from 4 to '08? that would be ideal. - I see I'm not the only one struggling with this issue -- as the thread you responded to here illustrates .

looking forward to hearing back , thanks!

  • Should I upgrade from iPhoto 9 to 11?

    Hi
I have been holding back from upgrading from iphoto 9 to 11, but I recently got a new Macbook air with Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11 pre-installed.
My main iPhoto library is on my iMac which is still running Snow Leopard and iPhoto 09.
I have a very large library with approx 30,000 pictures built up over 7 years.
Ideally I want to be able to use iPhoto on both computers and I thought moving the library to a external drive would be the solution.
So far I have copied my iphoto library onto a USB3 external drive and tried to use it with the new iPhoto. Obviously it says I must upgrade the library first. But I have seen so many reports of issues with the iPhoto 11, is it going to be worth the hassle to do this, or should I find a way to install iPhoto 9 on my new Macbook instead?
I have played around with the iPhoto 11 and quite like the full screen editing view, but stability and confidence in the library is paramount, and I don't want to go ahead if it is going to be unreliable and buggy. Have they fixed most of the bugs now?
Would you guys go ahead and upgrade, continue with 09, or consider moving to Lightroom or another more stable product?
    thanks
    David

OK, so I took the plunge and upgraded the database for the library I stored on the external drive, to use with my macbook.
The upgrade went smoothly, and very fast - much faster than expected as it took about an hour!
Now I am trying to verify that everything is A-OK before I buy iPhoto 11 on the iMac and start to use this external copy as the master.
I have found one issue so far, and could do with some advice.  All the phtots and events seem to be there, however when I try and edit a photo, almost all photos (but not all, I would say about 75%) say "Image cannot be edited. This photo was previously edited with another application or with an early version of iPhoto. Duplicate this photo to edit it.".
Is this normal? Most of my photos were created in iphoto 9, some may have been edited in photoshop and resaved to iphoto, but all originated from an upload into iphoto originally.
Any ideas as to whether this can be solved or if I have to duplicate every single picture manually if I want to edit? That would be a pain!
    thanks
    David

  • Upgrading from iphoto 8 to iphoto 9

Do I have to pay to upgrade from iphoto 8 to iphoto 9?  What are the most significant enhancements? Would I subsequently want to upgrade to iphoto 10 or 11?  Reviews online for the latter are not good, hence stopping at iphoto 9 sounds like the best thing to do.
    Thanks for your help.

Then it would have been a good idea to post in the MacBook Pro or iPhoto forums instead of the iPad forum and it wouldn't have been so confusing.
Yes, you do have to pay to upgrade. Check in here https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/iphoto to see what people have to say on the versions. Personnaly I like 9.3.5. And it is a bit hard to tell you whether to stop at 9 when nothing on a version 10 or 11 is available.

  • Upgrading from iPhoto '05 to iPhoto '08

I'm planning to upgrade from iLife '05 to iLife '08. I'm concerned about the upgrade from iPhoto '05 to iPhoto '08.
I have about 17,000 photo's, most of which are not organized. I have some photo albums within folders and keywords on some photos.
I want to know of any upgrade issues and any "best practices" for doing the iPhoto upgrade.

    Start with the tutorials:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/
    Other than that...
The iPhoto Library Folder is arranged very differently from v5. With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • Upgrading from iphoto 06 to iphoto 08

    HI,
I am planning to upgrade from iPhoto 06 to iPhoto 08. I store my iPhoto library on an external firewire drive. Will the upgrade find my iPhotos on the external drive when I upgrade or do I have to move the library back into my Pictures folder?
    Thanks

    Douglas:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You don't have to move the library. Just install iPhoto 7 (08), run the latest installer (it also requires Quicktime 7.5) and the launch. iPhoto will locate the library and inform you that it will need to be updated. Just be sure to have a backup copy of it in case the conversion doesn't go as intended. It happens but is rare.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How can i upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

How can I upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

With the above listed config that I have (iphoto 7.1.5 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8), how can I move my iPhoto library from this old iMac (2006) to my NEW iMac (2011) that is running iPhoto 9.5.1 ?
To open an iPhoto 7.1.x version in iPhoto '11 you need to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader. See this Support document:
iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrade
Download and install the upgrader,  then run it on your iPhoto 7.1.5 library. After that, iPhoto will be able to open your library and upgrade it to version 9.5.1. And you will be able to merge the libraries with if Library Manager.

  • I am trying to chose an upgrade from iPhoto to either lightroom or photoshop elements 10

I am trying to chose an upgrade from iphoto to either lightroom or photoshope elements 10, and would appreciate any comments/advice
    Thanks for your time
    Sandy

Elements and LIghtroom are different categories of app. Elements is a pretty straight up editor. Lightroom is database driven photo manager with lossless processing. Simply, Lightoom would be the upgrade to iPhoto.
That said, there is no upgrade path from iPhoto to these apps. You will need to export from iPhoto to the Finder - a process that means you will lose something of the work you have done in iPhoto already.
If your reason for upgrading is to add editing power then you can use Elements as an extenral editor to iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If the Limitation you see in iPhoto is primarily photo managment then have a look at Aperture. Half the price of Lightroom, much better manager, complete with OS integration.
If you're shooting Raw then Lightroom or Aperture are the way to go.
You can set Elements as an external editor in either.

  • Upgrade from iPhoto or Aperture 2 library?

I have Aperture 2 installed alongside iPhoto. The libraries are nearly identical with some recent shots since yearend in iPhoto but not yet transferred to Aperture 2, but they easily could be. I have purchased Aperture 3, and I am wondering am I better off upgrading from iPhoto or Aperture 2? I am running the latest software for OS X and for both applications. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Either would do but Aperture is more capable overall - a pro app vs the consumer iPhoto). Since you bought Aperture it would seem sensible to use that. No advantage I can think of to using both which I think is a recipe for confusion.

  • Upgrade from iPhoto 09 to Aperture 3.3

I am thinking about getting Aperture 3.3 and upgrading from iPhoto 09. I don't think I see an advantage of using iPhoto in the future. Do you still have the option to just convert over to an Aperture library (pre 3.3) without sharing between libraries? Thanks, Jeff

If your current iPhoto version is iPhoto 9.3.x, and you opened the iPhoto Library at least once in this version, you can simply open your iPhoto library in Aperture 9.3.1; no conversion necessary.

  • MobileMe albums not visible in Aperture after upgrade from iPhoto

I've just upgraded from iPhoto to Aperture and all went well, except that my mobileme albums aren't appearing. I published a test album which worked, but my existing ones don't appear.
I've read on another thread that a dodgy character in an album name caused a similar problem but I can't see anything that looks odd in my mobileme album names.
    Any ideas?

I had the exact problem and found the solution here.

I want to upgrade from my current version of Flash v11.9.900.117 to the current v11.9.900.152. On clicking on the Flash player link in the Downloads section of the Adobe home page I am taken to what looks like the 'Flash Player' download page with an 'install Flash' button in the bottom right hand corner. However, when I click on this button I am directed back to the Adobe home page. Could this be something to do with my AV?.

Bypass the downloader/installer and download the Adobe Flash Player installer directly by clicking one of the following links.

  • I want to upgrade from Photoshop Extended CS5 to PS Extended CS6 (I do NOT want CC) but have been unable to find this at a sensible price (or sometimes at all). Help, anyone please?

I want to upgrade from Photoshop Extended CS5 to PS Extended CS6 Mac (I do NOT want CC) but have been unable to find this at a sensible price (or sometimes at all). Help, anyone please? This is in UK, btw!

What do you consider a sensible price?  PS CS6 extended is available only when you purchase the CS6 Suite, which is around $1000 for the upgrade from CS5.  PS 6, which is not extended, is about $200, but I'm not sure about upgrading to a single app from a suite.  Adobe used to allow it, but I'm not sure about now.  PS CC and Lightroom 5 combo is $9.99 a month or PS CC alone for $19.99 or the whole CC suite for $29 a month.  The latest CC apps are "extended."
