That disk is very probably formated as FAT 32, the normal format for PCs. FAT 32 cannot support files larger than 4 GB; also, it corrupts some types of Mac OS files. If you want to securely backup your mac files, you must have a disk prepared for Mac OS.
Therefore, open Disk Utility, choose again 1 partition for your external disk and, under Options, GUID partition map (it may also be a boot disk for an intel mac), then format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. Y0u are done.
If you want to exchange data with PCs, you should chose Master Boot REcord and NTFS format, for this you must use a additional utility like NTFS-3G. But note that mac files may also get corrupt in NTFS format.

The Boot Camp 3.1 drivers you downloaded have to be installed in Windows after running Boot Camp Assistant. That update does not apply to Boot Camp Assistant, and as you are using Mac OS X 10.6.8, you are using the most recent Boot Camp Assistant version for Snow Leopard.
Once you have installed Windows with Boot Camp, insert the Snow Leopard DVD in Windows and install the Boot Camp 3.0 drivers. Then, install the Boot Camp 3.1 drivers

Recently upgraded from Firefox 3.6.13 to Firefox 13 - freezes when trying to open

I've been using firefox 3.6.13 for some time now; the reason I have such an older version is because it's for a work computer, and an upgrade to newer versions generally isn't seamless and can interrupt the process of work.
Any way, I find some down time and decided that I'd upgrade to the latest version of firefox. Every thing seemed to install fine, and it copied over all of my addons apparently (which I'm grateful for). How ever, when opening up Firefox it opens and displays two tabs saying "connecting", but nothing happens beyond that. It just freezes completely providing the "waiting" icon when hovering over it. I tried waiting 10+ minutes for what ever process was holding up to complete, but nothing happened. In order to close out of firefox I need to kill the process in task manager.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the same issue occurs. I tried looking for previous, more stable, versions of firefox but couldn't find any thing.

Upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 directly to Snow leopard 10.6.3 (dvd)

After reading your advices I 've tried to upgrade my MacBook 2Ghz Intel Core 2 duo directly to Snow leopard 10.6.3 from the DVD. But it did not work ! The install program said it is not possible. Could you tell why and what I have to do ? By the way I can't find no more Snow Leopard in the Apple store ! Hello, BD Aqua many thanks for your prompt reply. It's a gray one. And the message is "OSX can't 'be installed on this computer " or something like that. The installing program doesn't launch anything but just ask me the language I choice and after ...relaunching and relaunching ... nothing happens. However when I' ve called previously the Apple support they told me to upgrade directly in Snow Leopard. I want to be sure to have the possibility to install it before purchasing it and in which version ?
And do I have to erase my previous disk as somebody recommand it before installing the new OS ?

Only some 10.5 software is PowerPC only. Apple's transition to Intel began with Mac OS X 10.4.4. Software written for any system 10.4.4 and up could be PowerPC only, or Intel only. or able to be used on both. The key with discovering which it is, is asking if it is coded for "Universal" or looking on the search engines on the user tip and its associated links. 10.6.8 was the last system that included Rosetta as an optional install, which allowed non-plugin nor-driver associated PowerPC applications to run on Intel Macs. 10.5 does not include support for Classic, but the PowerPC Macs that could boot into 9, and supported 10.5 could still boot 9 after installnig 10.5. Classic allowed one to run Mac OS 9 applications side by side with Mac OS X in much the same manner Rosetta allows PowerPC applications to run side by side with Intel applications. The only difference is you had more control over a few Mac OS 9 extensions within Classic, whereas no deliberate control can be given to PowerPC kernel extensions within Rosetta.

I see no problems as 10.6 can be installed on any Intel-based Mac as long as it has enough memory and storage.

I pre-ordered my iphone 5 (Black) got that last week. Quickly backed up my Iphone 4 and Restored my iphone 5.The first thing i checked to see is connecting to my WIFI network at home. And i kept getting a message "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE NETWORK". I had the iphone 4 aside and i can see iphone 4 is connected just fine. So are my laptop, Ipad and other devices.
So what is different in Iphone5?
After couple of days of head banging, and phone calls with apple support. I finally gave up and went to a apple store , they said, They have not heard any WIFI issues and my case was the first , However to keep me happy they said they will replace my device, But if have the same issue ,they will NOT be able to replace it again. And they even showed me the new iphoen connects to their "Non-secured" apple WIFI network.
So i take the new phone home, and the first thing i try is connecting to WIFI.And i still get "Unable to connect to the wifi network ".And i still can see Iphone 4 working fine and connecting to the same network just fine. With the second iphone5 also not working, I realized it is not hardware, but something surely changed with WIFI in iphone 5. I have a NETGEAR router with its latest firmware installed(2.0.26). I then downgraded my firmware to 2.0.21, then gave a shot.
BINGO..Iphone 5 works fine connects to wifi.and so is my iphone4 too.
So for all those users out there, the fact is something changed in iphone 5 WIFI algorithm. And if anyone really disagrees with me on this, I am going to post a video to demonstrate on YOUTUBE. I believe it is completely UNFAIR for apple to now ask you Upgrade/change your router or its firmware. And it is not fair for router companies to Fix anything to make their firmware compatible with iphone5.
So iphone 5 Users, Please lets us all push for a fix on this issue. WE WANT FIX.

I can't tell you how frustrated/disappointed I was when this exact situation happened to me. I upgraded my wife's iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5 just to find out that it wouldn't connect to my home wifi but would connect everywhere else. Guess what...
I found a fix!!
On you iPhone go to Settings, General, About, scroll to "WiFi Address". Now stay there.
Log-in to your modem thru your web browser via IP Address. (Keep in mind, I use a 2Wire modem, yours may be different) Clicked "Wireless" for wireless settings, scrolled down to "MAC Filtering" and clicked "Edit Allowed/Blocked Device List". At the bottom, there's a field to which you can manually enter a MAC address to you allow or block. If you're using a different modem with different menus/options, just browse around til you find a similar option of manually adding MAC addresses for access or blocking.
MAC Address = Wifi Address. See where i'm going with this?
Type the WiFi Address from you iPhone in the MAC address field, click "Add to List". If MAC filtering is enabled, it'll be added to the BLOCK list, simply click on the address, and click the double arrow pointing towards the ALLOW list so it'll transfer lists to where you want it, then click save.
Now go back to your iPhone and attempt to re-connect to your wifi network as you normally would & voila!
This worked for me, i hope it works for you as well.

Very long search times from an IMac running 10.6.7 Snow Leopard when searching for files on a windows 2003 server

The issue is as follows:
The Imac is connected to the windows 2003 server via SMB type connection.
There are four sub folders in the main directory. We go to one of the sub folders in this case Server.
We go to search window and type the file name that we want to search such as test .
The choices selected for search parameters are Server for location and contains (same results if picked by file name)
Search takes roughly 6 minutes before it returns the result.
If we do the same search on the old Mac Server it will take 15 seconds to complete using same search parameters.
Any ideas on how to speed up search times to the Windows 2003 Server? I have tried going to finder preferences and removing the sharing section. That did not help.

Okay, I've....
1) Reinstalled XE, to start from scratch
2) Went in to SQL*Plus, did a "create pfile from spfile;"
3) Shutdown the database
4) Started it up in MOUNT mode
5) Ran NID, to change the database name from 'XE' to 'CTXMGMT'
6) Shutdown the database again
7) Edited the pfile to change the database name (i.e. "db_name='CTXMGMT'")
8) Started up the database
And that worked! So that's good... but now my question is:
How do I change the SID for the database? Currently, the instance name for the database is still 'XE'....
SQL> select instance_name
2 from v$instance;
INSTANCE_NAME
xe
I'd like it so a connection could be made to the database with the tnsnames.ora file looking like this:
CTXMGMT =
(DESCRIPTION =

When trying to back up my MBP Retina to a My Passport for Mac, I get the message: "The backup disk does not have ownership enabled."

I've used disk utility to verify and repair the disk and it checked out fine. I tried running the following commands from the terminal:
sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
No luck.
At one point, I did see the "ignore ownership" checkbox was checked, but now it has disappeared from the "more info" window after I unchecked it. Not that it worked while checked.
Any other ideas?

Try the following commands from Terminal (/Applications/Terminal) to find the identifier of the volume then change the option. Here's the link that discussed the commands.
Example
$ diskutil list
/dev/disk2

I am wanting to upgrade my iMac running 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. I Understand I need to purchase the entire box set, not just the $29 upgrade. Am I able to upgrade this mac? Yes, I want to purchase an iPhone finally (on Verizon) and I don't want to invest in the upgrade or the iPhone if it's not possible I can upgrade. Also, anyone have any advice on doing this upgrade? Hi Veebs, and not to worry, the number and breadth of posts on these discussions can be daunting.
Your iMac, since it is an Intel-based machine, can be upgraded to SL, 10.6...and you do not need the boxed set unless you want all of the peripheral software that is inlcuded. If you want just the operating system, the $29 special should be fine for you.
Note that the heavy users on here recommend at least 2 GB of memory, which you have, and the minimum of 10 GB free hard drive space would be better if it is more like 30-40 GB free space. At any rate, Mac OS X wants to see at least 10-15% of the hard drive capacity free.
After installing your new 10.6, just go to the free downloads and get the 10.6.6 combo if your installed version is less than that.
Then download iTunes 10.1, 10.1.2.17 is the current version, and you should be good to go with the new iPhone. Next you need to think of the iPad, iPod, oh well.

Adobe changed the catalog software from PSE6 onwards to the SQLite database – as used in Lightroom.
Earlier versions of PSE including PSE5 used a Microsoft Access database, stored in a file called [Catalog Name].psa.
If you have already embedded keywords and captions by writing file info into the images they should be readable even if catalog conversion fails. Lightroom does have the ability to import a PSE catalog but in view of the age of PSE5 I would recommend downloading the 30 day free trial of LR5.6 and then you can judge the level of success of catalog conversion.

I've been using LR since 1.0 and never encountered this issue until today. The above procedure for creating a new Preview Cache folder and preview files should fix the issue.
