I want to upgrade my processor to a dual 1ghz or higher. What is compatible

I want to upgrade my Power Mac G4 533MHz processor to a better one. I see plenty of them for sale on e-bay but I am not sure which are compatible. I have seen (Apple Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25GHz DP processor) and (Apple Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 733MHz CPU Processor) and (Apple Power Mac G4 1.42ghz Processor Module CPU 1.42ghz). I dont know if the MDD is compatible or the quicksilver. I have googled this topic many times but have seen conflicting answers.

In the link japamac posted, scroll down to the heading, "12 Volt Power Connector for 4th Mount Point". If you click on any of the small pictures, they will be shown much larger. This picture shows how the author used a nut and short bolt to fix a "loop" or "spade" connector on a wire to supply the required 12 Volts to the fourth lug on these faster processors. No soldering needed, and can be undone in a jiffy.
There is one more issue you may face if your old processor has the cooling fan powered off two pins on the processor module. The new processor will not have those pins, and you will need a 12 Volt fan adaptor (also off a Hard Drive power connector, or even the same power connector) to run the cooling fan.
Some of these adapters have Red, Black, and Yellow wires (instead of the expected Red and Black only). The yellow wire is an RPM output from the fan, and can be safely ignored.

    The largest 2.5" dia SATA drives available are 2 TB in capacity.
    Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB?  The drive itself may be faulty.

    I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
    I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
    I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

    The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
    One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
    Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

    Not sure I completely agree. AMDs do come in different speeds and a Quad Core running at a higher clock speed is "better" than a lower speed (or same speed) dual core but everything else being equal you do want to have an Intel processor in your laptop. This is hard for me to say as a long-time AMD afficianado and I still use AMD chips for desktops due to their pricing, but Intel has got AMD beat all to heck with laptops. Further, I am of the opinion that maybe 5% of the laptop processor upgrades that get discussed here ever get actually done. It is very hard to do and very expensive and with laptop prices at an all-time low it just makes no sense in the vast majority of cases.

  • I WANT TO UPGRADE MY PROCESSOR

    Hello, pls i'm asking to know the possibility of upgrading my processor from AMD A6-3430MX APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics to an A10 processor, which will boost the strength of my gaming...is it possible to buy only the A10 processor and replace it on my A6 because the current processor does not support most of my gaming needs while i have enough video graphics memory (1.5gb Radeon). However, i also want to know the amount of maximum RAM the computer can accomodate because currently i have 6gb RAM and i'm thinking of upgrading it to 8gb. Will these changes affect the computer negatively? or what? because i think it the best economical option for me rather than waiting to buy a bigger laptop with a higher processor...Games that require such high specs include upcoming Watchdogs, Need for Speed Rivals, Call of Duty ghost, Upcoming Hitman 6, and so many others...

    Upgrading to 8Gb is doable. Make sure that you replace the memory modules that are currently installed with an identical pair of guaranteed compatible 4GB memory modules. That will let you run the modules in dual channel mode.  Use only memory modules from well known memory manufacturers. Corsair, Hynix, Kingston, OCZ, Samsung.

  • I want to upgrade my processor on my DV9010us can anyone help with info or instructions

    I've taken my dell inspiron 8200 apart numerous times but I get the impression HP DV 9010us is not as easy. Does anybody have insrtuctions for disassembly. I want to replace the processor. I have a amd 1.8 in it now. What can I put in it 2.3 or faster amd chip ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance . Steve

    You have TL-56, the fastest one you can go is TL-68, check with HP to make sure the BIOS support TL-68.

    First think about memory and an SSD drive. Laptop processor upgrades are a big hassle and not cheap.

    Well first off what is your Product Number that will tell if you board can take a i7 processor?

    That manual is for a different Dv6 series (Sandy Bridge - Dv6-6000). The laptop has a shared graphics Intel chip so it might not be possible to upgrade to Core i7-720/820QM but should be possible to upgrade up to Core i5-580M as it takes 35W (use the same fan/heat sink) as the original CPU. The RAM can be upgraded up to 8GB of DDR3 - 1066MHz memory. 1333MHz DDR3 modules might work too but will downclock to 1066Mhz so no need to buy them anyway.

  • I want to upgrade to iPhoto/iMovie '11 but the latest release is not compatible with OSX 10.6.8

    Can I buy an older version anywhere? Or am I being coerced into buying Lion? I tried looking through the app store but it seems increasingly likely that I'm going to have to buy an old iLife disc of someone, or upgrade. Unfortunately I'm using a late 2007 Macbook (not even Macbook pro) which handles leopard but not sure if it will handle Lion.

  • T42 want to upgrade video chip, so I need a new motherboard, what will be compatible?

    Hello, lenovo community.
    First time posting here. I have recently been having issues with my T42, type 2373-8tu, where the screen will flicker and/or go blank, then the display will either look staticy (odd for an LCD) or it will just flash a bunch of artifacts (go here and click broken monitor, and that's sort of how my screen looks from time to time). I posted a thread on reddit and a user there suggested it could be an issue with the video chip if it's ATI (which it is). I did some research and found that it is a common problem. 
    Now, onto the upgrade. I was looking at the specs page and saw that there is a possible 128MB video chip, but I don't know if it's compatible with the 14.1 inch model (which I have). Further, I don't know which motherboard I would need which would have the video chip I'm looking for. Can any of you with more experience than myself offer some insight on this before I buy anything?

It seems a lot of people have had issues with it and it seems more trouble than it's worth. Is there a way to get a board with out the security chip? This page doesn't show that's possible for the 128 MB board.
    You might have blown the fuse on the motherboard, or it may just have died completely. Hard to tell without knowing more details.
    As for the security chip, all of these "p" boards have one AFAIK, just turn it off in BIOS and call it a day, that's what I've been doing for a decade now anyway.
