I want to use a Netgear router instead of Airport Express...

I'm trying to create a network of my Mac and my wife's Windows (Vista) laptop, really just so we can print wirelessly from the laptop.
Currently my cable broadband modem is linked to Airport Express which "feeds" the Mac. I'd like to remove the Airport (whose range I imagine will be insufficient) and replace it with a Netgear DG834G wireless router, then add the laptop to the network.
I've looked around this site but haven't found any advice that addresses this particular issue and am hesitant to start changing things for fear of losing my online connection and also my access to the good people on this forum.
Can someone point me to any pages that address my query?

Basically all you need do is power everything down; modem, router, computers. Then power up in 2 minute sequences; modem, router, computers in turn. However, you should read the manual of your new Netgear router so you set it up properly. Having gone through this I can say it is quit easy. Don't use the CD supplied. Connect your Mac to one of the router's LAN ports; power the router and the Mac. Launch a web browser. You should get the router's admin page. default user name is 'admin'. Default password is 'password'. You should at least change the password so no one outside can gain access to your router. Then you should change the name of the SSID to whatever you want to call your network. Then you should set up your wireless access password protected. Then power every thing down and set up the network as above. There are tweaks you can add. If you have issues post back.

  • AirPort Utility can't find Netgear router OR new AirPort Express

    Hello,
I couldn't find my situation fully addressed in older posts, so I'm posting one myself.
I am trying to EXTEND my current network with a newly purchased AirPort Express. My equipment is as follows:
Comcast modem connected via ethernet cable to...
    Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 R7000 dual-band router
One three-year-old Mac Mini running Lion
One newer MacBook Pro running Mavericks
Two iPhone 4S, latest software updated as of Nov. 2014
Two-year-old iPad, latest software updated as of Nov. 2014
Newly purchased AirPort Express as of Nov. 2014
We have a large house with an office at the extreme end resulting in a week signal, so I need to extend my network. The Netgear router sends a strong signal otherwise, and ALL devices are working properly and are fully connected to the WIFI network.
    So here is the problem:
I've tried many, many times to connect the APE using AP Utility with only two successful connections, but these connections were to "Join Existing Network" not to extend that network, but I selected this option as it seemed closest to what I want to do since "extension" of network was not an option. Then I see that I can edit the APE within AP Utility. I've done so, resetting the unit as a network extender, and the two times I tried this I sat waiting for five minutes for the thing to update only to get an error message. At this junction I could do nothing but remove the APE in AP Utility by "forgetting" it. No other options were available that I could see.
Now, the two times I've done the above, were two times within 20+ attempts to get AirPort Utility to even see the darn thing. I've tried placing the APE near the Netgear router, moderately close (other side of room) and even at the far end of the house, and neither the APE or the Netgear router were ever found in the AP Utility save the two incidences mentioned above. I've scoured the net, rechecked all connections and performed all troubleshooting procedures I can find to no avail. All I get is a flashing amber light and no connection
A: Why won't AirPort Utility find my Netgear Router?
B: Why won't AirPort utility find my AirPort Express?
C: Why, on the two occasions the AP Utility did find the APE, did it not give me the option anywhere to set it up as an EXTENDER to the current network?
D: Is there any other way to add the APE to my network as desired without using AP Utility? (I do have the Negear Genie app, but I don't see options for adding a device for network extension so far)
I'm at wits end. Can anyone help?
Oh, and I've tried using AP Utility on both Macs listed above with the same results.
    Thanks for your help!

A: Why won't AirPort Utility find my Netgear Router?
AirPort Utility works only with an Apple router, as does the utility for a Netgear work only with a Netgear router.
B: Why won't AirPort utility find my AirPort Express?
Any of 3-4 common reasons. We'll have to work on troubleshooting that.
C: Why, on the two occasions the AP Utility did find the APE, did it not give me the option anywhere to set it up as an EXTENDER to the current network?
Apple designed the wireless "extend" feature on their routers to only work with other Apple routers.
D: Is there any other way to add the APE to my network as desired without using AP Utility?
    No
Not sure how you want to proceed at this point. It might be possible to use the AirPort Express to extend the Netgear network if you connect it using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection back to the Netgear router.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, your best bet by far is to use another Netgear extender or repeater, which would likely be compatible with your Netgear router.

  • Windows XP/Netgear router/setting up Airport Express

    Hello all,
I am trying to set up an Airport Express so I can wirelessly stream my itunes music.
I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router, a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop, a Netgear WG 511 wireless card and XP SP2.
However I am having real problems.
I have searched the forums and found some good advice - but the problem I have is that the amber light is flashing so I can't use the Admin Utility to set the system up - because it doesn't recognise the network, even if I plug the Router directly into the Express with an Ethernet cable. I've tried resetting the Express a couple of times but nothing seems to happen - same problem. I've taken the security off my Netgear router so it's now completely open, disabled ACL (and even added the MAC address of the Express to the ACL list) but still nothing.
I'd be very grateful for any help anyone could give.

Thanks Henry - that seems to work. However once I finally got itunes/airtunes streaming music wirelessly it stopped after a bit and gave me the error message 'someone else is using front room speakers'. I looked on the itunes discussions and found something that seemed to work - restarting both itunes, the Airport and my laptop.
Then I decided to put security back on my wireless network - as expected I've had to reset and configure the Airport again but I'm back to where I started with the flashing amber light. I'm not sure at what stage of the configuration I should be telling the Airport Admin Utility what the password is for accessing my wireless router - if indeed I have to do that. Any idea?
    thanks.

I think I might have been sold a jelly - I want to listen to my music wirelessly which is why I bought the Airport Express, but I also have a wireless internet connection - can I do both?

Do you mean to say you already have a wireless network setup and thought by buying the Airport Express you just could use it for wireless music alone?
The Airport Express is chiefly a wireless router first, with the wireless music and printing as extra's.
It can be used for streaming music alone, but I think it needs to talk to network time servers and thus it gets screwed up over time not being on the internet. Also by your using your computers wifi for music streaming, no internet with your other router.
So it's a all Airport Express or back to a stereo mini cable.

  • Can I increase the range of an AirPort Extreme by a router other than AirPort Express?

Im using an AirPort Extreme as my primary wireless router extended by an AirPort Express at home. We are primarily using macs at home and I'm overall satisfied with the quality of the product. However a lot of online reviews (including pcmag and cNet don't list the extreme or the express) amongst the list of top 10 wireless routers. The ones listed are much cheaper and has received very positive user reviews as well. However I need to setup a new network at my new office and I have some questions regarding setting up a wifi network in regard to AirPort Extreme:
    1) Can I extend the wireless network setup via AirPort Extreme Base Station by another wireless router other than Airport Express?
    2) I've heard of many cheaper alternatives (Cisco and NetGear being chief) to AirPort Extreme. I've also heard that the network set up by the AE is not as compatible with a windows based environment (which could be an issue as I'm going for an IBM server). In that case which would be the best wireless router for me?
    3) Any other specific reason for which I should prefer AE over any other wireless modem?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1) Can I extend the wireless network setup via AirPort Extreme Base Station by another wireless router other than Airport Express?
Apple appears to have designed their "extend a wireless network" feature using proprietary software, so it would be extremely unlikely that a router from another manufacturer would work with the AirPort Extreme....if you are trying to extend wirelessly.
In that case which would be the best wireless router for me?
That depends on your requirements, and whether you are going strictly for specifications rather than features, or even ease of installation and use. In any case, I can't answer that question.
If you subscribe to industry publications with test reports on products, there always seems to be a new "best" product, so expect that whatever you buy will be superceded by another "best" product within a month.
As far as use with a PC, I've had no issues using several PCs with Apple routers.
    3) Any other specific reason for which I should prefer AE over any other wireless modem?
Apple routers are for mom and pop at home. While the product would provide basic functionality in an office, the product was not designed, nor does it have the type of features that most businesses would require.
For example, if I were using a business router, I would expect it use a high grade firewall for security purposes, and for the router to provide reports that track Internet use for each computer, along with a record of what Internet sites were being visited by each employee. Apple routers won't do that.

  • Can I? router - powerbook(ethernet)- airport express(sharing)- ibook(ethe

    Can I network in this fashion? router -> powerbook(ethernet)->airport express(sharing)-> ibook(ethernet)
I have only two computers and I am trying to avoid buying a discontinued overpricd airport card
    Any help would be great

    peebook,
Can you explain your current setup a little more please. I think that this is what you have.
    - A router (Wired or wireless? How many ports?)
    - A powerbook with an Airport Extreme Card
    - An old iBook (Would require an Airport Card)
    - An Airport Express
If you have a multi port router, you could go from the router to the Airport Express and the iBook, and then use the Powerbook wirelessly?

  • Extend netgear dgn3500 range with airport express

    Hello all,
I would like to extend my network range ( router netgear dgn3500) with an airport express. Is it possible?
    Thank you!

I'm not sure if what I did extended the range, but I can play music from iTunes through connected speakers while connected to my Netgear WGR614v7 router (base).  I tried hardwiring both my Mac and another PC in the house to the express and the computers do not find the express.
Connect (I did it wirelessly) to the express.
In AirPort Utility, select manual setup.
Under wireless, select "Join a wireless network" as the wireless mode.
The Wireless Network Name should be the same as your Netgear router's name.
Wireless security should also be the same as the Netgear router.
Type in the password for the Netgear router.
    Select update.
After the AirPort Express reboots, connect to the Netgear router, and the express should still be listed in AirPort Utility.  This means it is connected to the Netgear router.  Now for the ultimate test.  See if it extends the wireless range.  If it doesn't work, it might be the router, since mine is a different model.
    Good Luck!

  • Can you connect an iMac to a Lynksys router without an airport express

can you connect an iMac to a Lynksys router without an airport express or base? I tried running it from cable>modem> wireless router and it doesn't sling to the iMac. The airport card in the Mac does seem to be on, and there is a network connection set up. It's an intel iMac7,1. I'm not familiar with Mac, I'm trying to help out a friend.
At my house I have the same configuration going  from my PC to an old Mac laptop and it works fine.
I think my friend had her wifi network set up properly, or it wouldn't be showing in the list of networks when I check.
    the router is a Lynksys WRT160N V3.
Oh, and if I do run her computer trying to use the wireless, I don't get an internet connection at all. I have to have it hardwired straight to the modem.
Sorry I've asked this twice, but I haven't had any luck. I must just not know where to find things on the Mac. I did try other places in forum before posting again.
    Any ideas? Thanks

We don't know a thing about your iMac or what version of OS X it's running so it's very difficult to help you. Please note that information and also please complete your profile, then that infomation will be listed when you post in your next thread. You can complete your profile by clicking Your Stuff in the upper right of this page then click Profile and fill in the pertinent information.

    Csound1--
If you mean does the network appear on the Mac when I look for it, then yes.
I think my friend had her wifi network set up properly, or it wouldn't be showing in the list of networks when I check.
    the router is a Lynksys WRT160N V3.
I don't think she has the security code so I can check what's actually hooked up (the network name on screen at least appears to be locked). She's had the computer out to the shop and back recently and has never even run anything off the wireless.
I have a feeling I'm going to have to call her cable provider to sort it out. I'm hoping to avoid that. I don't know Mac at all. I could troubleshoot on my PC.
Ultimately, I want to be able to hook a Roku box to her TV to run Netflix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express

how can I set up a wi-fi network, using one time capsule and two airport express ?
The time capsule is near the Mac. ok
The first Airport is on the corridor, ok, works well and the App on the iPad signals so, ok
But when I plug the next Airport on another room nearby nothing happens, and signals disconected ....
is the signal so weak that is not able to go to ono room to the other ?

Well, even if you have the first express set up to extend the network, the second express can only extend from the TimeCapsule.
Maybe you got walls of sheetrook in the way, or kitchen/bathroom tiles, etc, dampening the signal rapidly.

  • I can use a modem 3G in the AirPort express, put it in gate USB of the equipamentos?

I can use a modem 3G in the AirPort express, put it in gate USB of the equipamentos?

No. The USB port on the AirPort Express is designed to be used only for a USB printer.

  • Is it best to use the 5ghz option on the airport express

Is it best to use the 5ghz option on the airport express

It would depend on your networking requirements. If the highest bandwidth is desired, the 5 GHz band offers approximately 2-3x more than the 2.4 GHz band ... but for shorter distances. Also, due to signal characteristics, the higher frequencies have more difficulty passing through objects like walls. Thus I would only recommend 5 GHz for a single room.
Also, it will depend on the wireless clients that you need to support. Not all support operation on the 5 GHz band, especially for the 802.11n radio mode.

  • Installation tomorrow -- want to use my own router with ONT-611

Tomorrow I am having Verizon FIOS installed (internet only, no TV or phone services).  I've been reading this morning about using my own router, which I would prefer.  Previous owners of the house had FIOS so there is already an ONT-611 hanging off the side of the house, and there is the battery backup box hanging inside the garage.  Also, there is an ethernet cable already ran through the cinderblock wall which hangs inside my garage.
    Now, here's what I've read:
    1. This ONT-611 does not support MoCA
    2. The ethernet port on the ONT-611 only runs at 100mbps
I have 16 runs of CAT6 in my house which terminates to a rack in my garage which houses a 24-port gigabit switch.  I would like to swing one of those runs over to the existing ethernet cable so I can connect it to my router (a small linux computer which two NICs running shorewall).  I'll have to figure out how to connect those cables (both are male RJ45)... otherwise, will this configuration be supported?
As I said, I will not have TV services and do not plan to subscribe in the future.  Is there any reason why I would want to go with another configuration (aka use coax and the supplied actiontec?).
    Thank you!

The link smith6612 provided has good info, but these are some things I can think of, and items I have done.
I would let Verizon do their supported install with the Actiontec router set up with Ethernet WAN. That is a supported install. This way you have their router should you have issues at a later date, you can put it back to the default configuration. After Verizon leaves, you can configure it as you wish. See if they will extend the cable from the ONT over to your rack. They probably will run a new cable for you. Put the Actiontec at your rack and connect one of its LAN ports to your switch until after the install. Then if you have your Linux PC in close proximity to two of your 16 outlets you could loop two of those those back to your rack. One to the router and one to your switch. Actually you could just use the router as a second switch if you turn off DHCP and connect one LAN port to the ONT and another LAN port to the cable going to your Shorwall's WAN. Many many ways. Shorewall WAN side would need to be configured properly for your ONT and FiOS set up. That is why I say let them do their thing first. Some of the older installs are still using PPPoE and some newer are DHCP. that would make a difference on how you configure your Linux box's WAN if it is directly connected to the ONT VIA the cable or a switch, which could just be the Actiontec without the WAN ports used. If you use the Actiontec as a switch directly off of the ONT, be sure to turn off DHCP and the WiFi first, and only use two lan ports. DON'T pull more than one public IP from the ONT.
I have had various configurations, and always Ethernet from the ONT. The original ONT 610 did not support MOCA and it had to be bridged from the Actiontec or a NIM-100. I have connected my Linux IP Cop with Dan's Guardian Proxy Filter directly to the ONT and used the Actiontec as a MOCA bridge for my TV services. Right now I have the Actiontec connected directly to the ONT first via Ethernet WAN, and have 2 DVRs, and 2 STBs for the TV. The Actiontec and TVs are considered The DMZ, with my Linux box called the moat. All my workstations and server sit behind the Linux proxy filter firewall. I set fixed IPs on my private network via MAC and DHCP, and the proxy is transparent. With exceptions on the filter for certain computers.
With my configuration, I can call with any issues and it is supported. Short of my Linux box and PCs. Which I don't want anyone into anyway. I have been thinking of putting the Linux box back in front, so I am not running dual NAT, but I need to have a supported platform for testing and using FiOS features. Thus I put the Actiontec back in front, and my stuff is safer behind the second NAT.

  • Using a Netgear Router

    Hi
I've just bought a Netgear Router to use as the sky hub is very slow and leggy.
On setting up the new router it asks for the isp username and password.
Does anyone know where I get this from?
    Thanks

Service Providers generally are looking at increasing / improving the management of in home devices and the devices behing them (e.g. in Sky's case the Sky+ box) to offer improved service. I wold imagine Sky are no different and either already have, or would like to have a TR069 management platform. To do that they need to know what is on the far end. To reinforce that some Service Providers supply their own kit and don't give out passwords etc. I use a Netgear, just use Wireshark to get the details you need, I assume that is what the videos show, also set it up for PPPoA, Netgear probably does not support Sky's preferred MER.

If you have credit then it will automatically use that, the code verification is simply for security purposes.
