I want to use Airport Express in my hotel room using the wired internet connection, but I don't carry a computer, just my iPad.  Is that possible?

I want to use AirPort Express when I am traveling.  I would like to use a wired internet connection in a hotel room to create a wireless connection.  However, I do not normally carry my laptop, just my iPad.  Is it possible to do this?

You will have to pre-configure the Express using AirPort Utility on your computer before you leave on the trip. The Express will store and remember the settings.
You might want to check with the hotel in advance to make sure that they have Ethernet ports available. Most hotels have switched to wireless and the others are not far behind.

No, I made sure nothing was checked for that section when i found out he could see my screen. At the top it says "computers on your local network can access your computer at: blah blah". I think thats how hes doing it but i dont know how to fix it.

  • Can I use a Airport Express and a Foscam IP camera without a internet connection?

    Hi All,
I have a Foscam FI8918W IP camera.  I have it working perfectly at home on my local network over wifi with either my Airport Extreme or my Airport Express.
I planned to use this IP cam as a wireless camera for on stage work with bands, monitoring equipment that I can't see during the show utilising the Airport Express, my MBP or iPad.
As I have said, i have everything working very well, until I disconnect the Airport Express from the mains power and remove the CAT5 cable from my modem to the A.E.  When I reconnect the power (but not the internet connection), I get error messages from the IP camera software that the Subnet mask settings are incorrect.
I cannot get the camera to work until I reconnect the internet connection.  After a few moments, the issue's are resolved and everything starts working again and I can view the camera's video feed from an i.p. address.
Question is: Is there a way to set up the A.E. so that it doesn't require a internet connection?
I will not have internet at a lot of venues and need to get this to work just as a stand alone setup.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure I quite understand. Do you wish to use the AEX to provide a wireless connection for a device that has an Ethernet port but no wireless capability of its own? You wish to use it in place of a wireless card that isn't internally installed? If so, the answer is, "Yes." It will work as a wireless access point. But you must have an extant wireless network because the AEX won't have an Internet connection when used in this way.
If you have an existing wireless network with a wireless router connected to your cable/DSL model or your modem is a wireless router as well, then the AEX may connect to it in bridge mode. Note that AEXs don't always play nice with non-Apple routers. Some work; others don't.

  • Airport Express. No airtunes when there is an internet connection.

    Hello guys,
Now I have my very own airport express problem. I will try to go into as much detail as possible.
I own Airport express for about a month. It worked fine. Moved to the new apparent recently.
I have HP Pavillion notebook. While without the internet in the new appartment i set up my AE to stream music to stereo in a bridge mode. It worked fine.
    Now my inet is on.
I connected AE to modem via ethernet cable, set it in a bridge mode. After a while i got the wireless internet connection on my PC. When the PC is connected to the internet i cannot connect to the AE or get the Airtunes working.
While reading the forums i've found out that i can change TCP/IP on PC to 164.192. and that will help me to connect to AE. I did, but at the same time the inet was gone.
Summary: i have a working wi-fi internet connection while AE is in the bridge mode connected via ethernet to the modem, but have no airtunes. If i set my PC's IP to 164.192. i can get airtunes but no internet. Need to get this together.
*The things i've tried already*: used AirPort Utility to set AE to "distribute IP", via DHCP. After that i rebooted my modem, AE and PC. PC and AE got IPs like 10.1.0. but no internet connection. Tech support of ISP said that it sees my PC, but PC has no IP on the net. While in this mode i also get the trouble connecting PC wirelessly to the AE and have to use hard reset to default settings for AE.
Much the same result i get when trying to "share one IP via DHCP".
Notes: PC's IP is set automatically. PC has internet connection via ethernet cable plugged directly into modem. Usual PC's IP is something like 77.122.
As far as i understand the problem is with IPs.
Please help me out. Thaks alot in advance.

    Ok, please try the following:
o Power-down the modem, AX, and computer(s). Order is not critical.
o While all of the network equipment is powered down, perform a "factory default" reset on the AX. When complete, power-down the AX.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).
Your computer should now be able to access the Internet through the AX. Please post back your results.

  • Trying to use Airport Express (2012) in Hotel and it is not working

Hey folks, the title pretty much says it all. I picked up a new AE last week, and wanted to use while I travel to share out my hotels wired connection to my computers, iPhone and iPad. I am pretty good with networking, so I can't seem to figure out how to get around the double NAT error that I am getting from the Airport utility. It appears that the hotels network is blocking me from connecting. If I use my back up travel router (Zuni Connect) everything works fine. It appears the AE is not getting along with the hotel. Any ideas on how to get around this?

I traveled for years with an AirPort Express and have had virtually no problems connecting to the hotel networks if an Ethernet port is provided in the room.
Up until a few years ago, configuring the Express in Bridge Mode worked just fine, as hotels would allow several devices to connect without problems.
Unfortunately, hotels have become a lot smarter as they look for ways to generate more revenue. Many hotels now will only allow one connection if the Express is configured in Bridge Mode, so I started using the Express in router mode about 3 years ago to get around this.
Security wise, this is actually a bettter arrangement as Tesserax notes, because other users at the hotel cannot "see" your devices.
The Double NAT "error" can be ignored with an option in AirPort Utility if you wish, and the Express will display a nice, green light.
I have no trouble connecting 3-4 devices this way and the hotel only "sees" one device, so they only charge for one connection.
When the hotel only has wireless, that is when I bring out the second Express that I travel with, so I can use one Express to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second Express, which is configured as a router to allow multiple devices to connect.  The hotel only "sees" one connection this way.

  • Using airport express with a verizon hotspot for the internet.

I recently purchased a new laptop. Wanting to be able to print from my laptop and not having to connect the USB printer cable I purchased an Airport Express router. I use a Verizon HotSpot it get access to the internet. My problem is that I am unable to print data from the internet since I have to disconnect from it to gain access to my network printer. Any ideas how to be able to print data from the internet using my network printer?

I don't have one of these to verify, but have you tried reconfiguring your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a wireless client? In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network created by your Verizon Hotspot device and its USB port would be enabled to share the attached USB printer.
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a "Wireless Client," using the AirPort Utility, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
Perform a "Factory Default" reset on the AX.
    Launch the AirPort Utility.
    Select the AX.
If not already connected to the AX's wireless network, go ahead and switch to it when prompted.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
Network Name: <type in the network name/SSID of the wireless network that you want to join or select it from the pop-up menu>
Wireless Security: None OR, if you are using security on your wireless network:
Wireless Security: <Select the appropriate level of security for the existing wireless network: WPA/WPA2 Personal | WPA2 Personal>
Password: <enter your wireless network security password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the same security password>
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX.

  • Itunes using Airport Express 802.11n and Remote app no longer staying connected

I'm running Windows 7. I find that my Remote app either keeps dropping Home Sharing (unless I toggle Home Sharing off/on in Itunes) or if it finds my library it cannot open it through the app. I can play music through my Airport, but it's the remote app that can't seem to connect with my iTunes. I should add that the remote app has the same breakdown on both my iphone 6 and ipad mini 2. So it's not the app, but some problem along the line (Airport express? router? Itunes?) Any suggestions?

    OK, thanks for the info.
You'll need to jot down a setting that the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) is using in order to give the AirPort Express (AX).
Open AirPort Utility, select your AEBS and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Jot down the setting that you see for Wireless Security
    Close AirPort Utility
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly and then release.
Temporarily, position the AX near your AirPort Extreme and connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility, select the AX and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, establish a device password (write this down) and adjust time settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme wireless network
Enter a check mark next to Enable Ethernet clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AEBS that you wrote down
Wireless Password = Same password that your AEBS network is using
    Confirm Password
Click Update at the lower right and the AX will restart. You can close AirPort Utility and disconnect the ethernet cable once you see the message that the settings have been saved to the AX.
After 30-45 seconds, you should have a green light on the AX. Now you can move the AX where it is needed and power it back up again. The ethernet port on the AX is enabled in this type of configuration, so you should be able to connect an ethernet device and connect. You may need to restart the device and/or the entire network to get everything synchronized.

  • Using Airport Express to play music while surfing the web via netgear

Can I play music over my airport express (airtunes), while simultaneosly surfing via a different wireless router. As it stands I have been unable to do this, because I have to set my wireless connection to one or the other. When I link up to my NETGEAR for browsing, the remote speakers in itunes become unavailable.
Has anyone found a solution to this?

Hi, thanks for your help. It got me reading, and here's what I figured out:
The problem was when I originally set the profile I had my internet cable plugged into the airport express; So the set up assistant assumed that i would be using that as my internet connection. I just had to re-setup with the airport ONLY plugged into the stereo.
    Again, thanks for your help.

  • Using airport Express on a hotel ethernet to create a wireless network

Hi there, yesterday I bought an airport express as I was lead to beleive it was the perfect device and simple to set up with regards to creating a wireless network from a ethernet connection in a hotel room. I seem to get a green light and seem to aquire a valid IP address of 192.168.2.102 and the AE utility doesn't state I have any problems and yet I cannot connect to the internet. I am from the UK and currently in Honk Kong on business for the next few days and desperately need to get a wireless connection sorted. I have read through many of the archives on these forum pages and it is still not certain to me whether I should be using bridged mode or not?
btw, I can connect my pc and get internet access without any problems by ethernet directly into my pc.
can someone advise me of the settings I should use given my scenario (ethernet connection in a hotel room). Given how much tme I have invested trying to get the AE to connect to the internet I would prefer to stick with it and get it workShort rather than taking the Airport Express back to the Apple store tomorrow and moving to a hotel with wireless and not ethernet connection.
    Help appreciated

Hello, thanks for your suggestions. I have tried setting up the AE using my girlfreinds Win XP computer instead of my vista one and it setup 1st time without any problems. In fact, the options I got presented with were slightly different. Shocked at what a difference installation and setup can be from using a Vista laptop to a XP netbook. Maoin thing it is now working and you were correct about using it in bridged mode so many thanks.

  • Using airport express for itunes and another wireless network for internet

Is there any way i can use my airport express just for playin music through airtunes, and log onto the internet using a different wireless network?

Hello bleno567. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Is there any way i can use my airport express just for playin music through airtunes, and log onto the internet using a different wireless network?
Yes, you just need to configure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), that will be used to stream iTunes, as a wireless client.

  • My wi-fi worked fine on Airport Express two days ago.  Now the light is green, but I can't get the Internet on my satellite connection.  I've checked Network Preferences, Aiport Express menu, and the satellite tech support. The Ethernet connection works.

My wi-fi connection from my iPad via the Airport Express Base Station on my home computer worked just fine until yesterday morning.  I have a Macintosh G5 with a satellite connection.  I could not get an Internet connection.  After using the Network Preferences and Aiport Express applications several times, then unplugging and replugging in the computer, satellite modem and Airport Express module, checking the satellite dish for any obstructions, and so on, the computer still wouldn't connect to the Internet.  (The green light was on in the Airport Express module.)  I called the satellite company technical support division last night.  The tech couldn't find any problem with the satellite connection.  When I plugged the satellite modem cord directly into the Ethernet outlet on my computer, I could pick up the Internet.
Today, the Airport Express module still has a green light but still doesn't connect to the Internet.  The only thing I can think of is that lights went out for about 15 minutes yesterday morning.  All of my electronics, except the Aiport Express Base Station, are on surge protectors.  Why would the Airport Express module still have a green light if it was damaged by the electrical outage?
I bought the module in 2009.  I have never had problems with Apple equipment before this. Is this base station fixable?
    I would appreciate your suggestions.

Hello everyone.  I too have experienced the same problem Mary described starting on the same day she mentioned January 12.  I have a G5 iMac, a G5 mini-mac, and a G4 laptop.  They were all working fine but all have mostly the same problem now in that the G4 does not connect at all and the G5s connect once in a while after restarts but do not maintain the connection.  In my case there was no power interruption.  In fact, the G4 laptop was not even connected to the home power connection.  My iPad2 and iPhone 4s wireless work fine and a wireless PC and Android tablet work fine as well.  The G5 and G4 work fine on an ethernet connection. ISP tech support (AT&T u-Verse) was very generous with their time in trying to solve my problem although it was established early on that their connection and equipment was working fine and that the problem was with my computers.  They walked me through a manual reset of all the particulars on IP addresses etc. so the problem was not related to that either. In the end ISP tech support concluded that the problem must lie with the Airport driver.  For some reason it changes the IP addresses to an incorrect address so it cannot connect.  Indeed when I tried the diagnostics on the G4 I got a window Pop-up that said an application had reset my settings. (In retrospect I seem to recall that I may have gotten that same message early on with the G5s but at that time I did not think much about it and went about trying to reset the settings but that process never concluded well) I think that the problem may be that there must have been an update of the Airport software that was not backward compatible with the G5 and older Macs.  I mention all this for two reasons.  First, perhaps someone out there who knows better than I do how to bring this to Apple's attention and perhaps they will address this.  Second, I would be curious to know whether there is anyway one can return a configuration on Macs to some earlier time period (as you can on PCs) when everything worked and then leave it that way foregoing any subseqent upgrades or any subsequent apps?

  • Airport Express + iPod Touch + Hotel Room (non WiFi access)

Just a question, since I tend to be the Mac guru at the office. Someone asked me if a hotel has non-WiFI internet access, can you connect to the web using only an Airport express and an iPod Touch?
Since I don't have either I really couldn't give a good definitive answer. I told him it seemed like you should be able to plug in the APE, connect the eithernet cable, then find the signal with the iPod Touch.
Anyone know if this is true, or is there some set-up that would need you to have a computer connected?

Most of the time this will work. If the hotel uses some type of web page authorization it might not work.
You may need a computer to configure the AirPort Express (AX) properly to connect to the hotel's Ethernet connection.

  • Using Airport Express as internet connection for one Mac and one PC

Will probably be judged a complete dork for this question. I have successfully set up my Imac G5 to run an internet connection through an Airport express. My partner runs a PC (Windows XP) and I want to connect this too. Have installed a USB wireless card on the PC, and installed Airport Utility, but it just won't find the Airport Express - it will however find the Imac with something like 96% signal strength. So I set up a network on the Mac and have successfully linked into it with the PC, but it soon comes up with a connectivity problem that will not allow internet browsing. So two questions - can I connect two computers to the Airport Express at once for internet browsing, or do I have to do it through linking the PC to a wireless network? If the latter is the route - any ideas on what the connectivity issue will be? Help!

No, not if the AirPort Express "joins" the wireless network.
No, I do not want to join a network.
It is possible to have the AirPort Express "create" a separate wireless network that would not have access to the Internet, but if you did this, you would need to log off of your normal network....(losing your Internet connection) and then log onto the AirPort Express network when you wanted to listen to AirPlay.
Then, when you wanted to have Internet access, you would have to log off of the AirPort Express network and log back onto your normal wireless network.
Ok, I understand that it is not possible to use airport express only for sound streaming while having an Internet connection at the same time. Airport express does need to join a network if I want sound streaming next an Internet connection. I wanted airport express not to get into way of my Internet connection because in this case the sound streaming messes up sometimes. When I configure airport express only as a sound output, the problems I encounter fade away but then I cannot access to the Internet. Anyhow thanks a lot for the answer.
