I want to use my original Iphone as an Ipod

I just got the new I phone 4 which took the place of my original I phone generation 1. How do I now just use my original I phone not as a phone but only as an Ipod. I really just want to use it for music and movies for my kids. I am scared to up link to Itunes because I don't want to screw up my settings on my new I phone 4?

iTunes will recognize each device as unique. It will continue to see the old iPhone as an iPhone but that's fine. You can sync multiple iPhones or iPods or iPads (or any combination of the above) to one iTunes Library.

I did borrow the SIM card from a friends old 3G he is using an an iPod Touch. It worked.
Even more interesting is that when I placed the "problem" SIM card in the 3G it merely indicated the SIM was locked but otherwise works as intended - an iPhone without cellular service - an iPod Touch.
No idea why the 1st gen iPhone will not work with its own SIM but its SIM works in a 3G.

Get a SIM card. Doesn't need to be an active SIM card, but any iPhone will require reactivation after a major software update or restore and activation requires a SIM card to be present.

After an iPhone is no longer activated, you can't install a firmware update or restore the iPhone with iTunes (which re-installs the firmware) since activation is required in order to do so.
I'm not aware of a way to roll a restore back.
If you have the SIM card that was used when this iPhone was activated, you can try inserting the SIM card and do another restore. Someone here reported that it is possible to install a firmware update or restore an iPhone with iTunes that is no longer activated as long as the SIM card that was used with the iPhone when activated is inserted.

I too would like to use my original iphone (first gen) as an ipod touch.
I moved my orig iphone sim card into my 3Gs when I got the new iphone...and then put an old sim card I had around into the orig iphone when the screen displayed that it needed a sim card.
Now the orig iphone only displays the familiar "USB cable to iTunes" pic and when I try to go thru the activation in iTunes the processes wants to create a new ATT account and plan for me. (I called ATT while doing this and the person confirmed that this is what would happen if I followed through.)
Is the ONLY WAY to use an original iphone (as an ipod) WITHOUT the original sim card to jailbreak it?

i just switched to the iPhone 3Gs...as for my original iPhone, i know i can still use it as an iPod. and i can still use safari and maps but with WiFi, correct?...if so, can i use the Appstore icon and iTunes icon on the phone? and how would that work in regards to adding it to iTunes on my computer?
also, if i want to give my original iPhone to someone else, what do i have to do? remove the sim card? how would i reset the original phone to its original setting, wiping it clean of anything i added on to it(phone numbers, music, movies, apps)?

Any app you can use over Wi-Fi will work just the same. iTunes will happily sync with multiple devices. As long as you are using the same iTunes Store account on computer, iPhone and de-activated iPhone, purchases should freely move around among the three.

To clear out the info, you can either Restore as New via iTunes, or on the phone use Settings>General>Reset which has several options.

I'm tired of wasting battery on my iPhone 4 to listen to music, so I wanted to use my old iPhone 3GS as an iPod. I read you had to have a sim card inserted in the phone, regardless if it's activated. So I put the old one inside, but when I connect it to my computer, it won't charge, or sync with iTunes. It's definitely not my charger because both of my phones charge in a wall outlet, and my iPhone 4 charges through the computer. Just not the iPhone 3GS.... Another thing to remember is the phone is actually usable for 911 calls and maybe others. Not a real good idea. Especially for a child.

In most cable systems, the router you have will plug into your modem and just work automatically. A NAT (Network Address Translation) router takes your external IP and hands out LAN (Local Area Network) based IPs. All of the devices you are working with right now should handle the change automatically unless you've changed from the default automatic configuration.
The problem with your wireless end of this is that the iPhone is not yet 802.11n, only 802.11g. Because that router is not dual band, all of your wifi devices will be forced to slow down to 802.11g speeds. This won't matter much for each device that's connecting to the internet, as your bottleneck is still going to be there. Where you will see slowdowns is device to device connections, like transferring data between the devices.

If you want to be able to track your iOS devices, turn on Find My iPhone in Settings>iCloud. You don't need to do anything on your Mac. You can track them from your Mac by going to icloud.com, signing into the iCloud account that the device(s) you want to track are using, then clicking on Find My iPhone.
As fromsouth said, you can also download a separate Find My iPhone app on any of your iOS devices. This allows any device to track the other devices. This is separate from enabling Find My iPhone on your devices, which is done in your device settings.
