I was given an iMac that has no os on it.do I have to by an os or will apple supply

I was given an iMac with no os on it. How can I make it work

The giver (or seller) should have provided the original disk set that came with the machine when it was new.
In the absence of that, then yes, you will need to purchase an appropriate OS install disk for that machine.
What is the specific model iMac? If you're not sure, look on the serial number label for the machine - the model identifier info should be on that in addition to the serial number. Post the model info here, not the serial number.
