If you're referring to iMessages, then the problem is that Apple is having server issues. If the problems your having are with standard SMS, post back with further details.

Assuming the phone isn't jailbroken, the basic steps (as needed) are:
Restart phone (you already did this)
Reset phone
Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

If your phone is jailbroken, this is the most frequent cause of the problems you described. Restoring could permanently brick the phone.
Note that your iOS is old and the current version is 4.2.8. It's odd that it wasn't updated when your activated your phone in iTunes, being that you got it last Friday. -

Do not get an iphone 5 if you want to use it with a Chrysler product. The Chrysler Uconnect system might pair with your phone but the uconnect system will usually abend and become unusable after a few telephone conversations. I have been to the dealer twice. They have reset the uconnect system twice and I find it works for about 2 to 3 phone calls then it abends and uconnect becomes useless. They had me call Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. I was told that the iphone five is not compatable at this time with any chrysler uconnect phone through the dash system, even the new vehicles. He had me get on this web site: www.uconnectphone.com as a place to monitor as when it would be compatable. They told me that Samsung seems to be working harder to make it compatible than apple is and they had no idea when it would begin to work. In effect Chrysler was telling me dump the iphone and get a Samsung if you want it to work in a Chrysler. Also, the site would only give you information for Chrysler that were 2008 or newer, they gave the following number to call if your vehicle was older. I called that number and they told me that Chrysler and Uconnect had no plans at all to make the iphone 5 work, in the future, on any Chrysler older than 2008. So.......If you have a Chrysler or Dodge that is older than 2008 you will NEVER be able to use an iphone5 on the uconnect through the dash system. Do not buy an iphone if you have an older vehicle. It will never be supported for the $1,000 you paid for this uconnect system on your car. My car is a 2005 Town and Country. I asked both Chrysler and uconnect if their was some sort of work around so I could use my phone. They both told me their was not and that they had no plans to resolve this situation for my vehicle. This means that I need to either get rid of my $42,000 vehicle with low milage or get rid of my Iphone 5. Niether are really good options.
I was also givne the following places to send formal complaints, even though I was told that neither Chrysler, Dodge or Apple were going to do anything to correct my problem:

I have a 2012 Dodge Charger and a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country and both worked flawlessly with the iPhone 5s my wife and I had. However, we just upgraded to the iPhone 6 and Uconnect will receive calls but you cannot answer them. You can callout successfully, however. the annoyance being the inability to answer incoming calls in the HandsFree mode.

Sending text messages to email addresses
With my previous (dumb) Samsung phone I used to send text messages to email addresses all the time and everything was fine. Now, it turns out that when I send a text message to an email address with my iPhone 4 the phone sends it as MMS instead of text, and the problem with that is that my provider (Bell Canada) charges me extra for these MMS messages. I do not normally use picture or video messaging, but when I'm trying to create a message to an email address with MMS disabled, the phone tells me this cannot be done unless I enable MMS.
I can receive texts from email addresses just fine and they come in as text messages with no extra charges for me. How can I send a plain text message from iPhone to an email address without going through MMS?Dododo, I have your same exact problem, right down to my last cell phone (samsung) that did it perfectly using only my included unlimited texts.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I think it sends them as MMS because bell sends the texts to email from the iphone as words on a notepad-like background that arrives in email as a picture attachment.
My problem is that I'd like to turn my 3G off when I don't need it, to save my mb's. Therefore sending emails right from the email app is not a viable alternative, when text --> email used to be free on my old, basic cell phone.

I used to have a Nokia 6100 with a company paid SIM. I purhased a new Nokia 6111 4 weeks ago. I transferred my SIM and everything worked fine (in/outgoing calls and in/out text) till last weekend. I can receive texts, in/out calls also, but I am not able to send texts now. Putting the SIM back into my old phone, everything works fine.

Check it the 6100 as follows:
Press Menu, and select Messages, Message settings, Text messages and Sending profile.If more than one message profile set is supported by your SIM card, select the set you want to change.Select Message centre number to view the phone number of the message centre needed for sending text messages (this is network provider specific)
Then return to the 6111 and follow roughly the same procedure and ensure the message centre number matches that in the 6100.
Select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > Text messages > Message Centres

I am sending text messages to some people who think they come from my husband. They have both my name & number and my husbands name and number in their contacts. Also everytime I send a text to my husband, a copy is sent to me too. I do however receive text message from people to my phone and it seems to work fine if they do not have my husbands info.
You don't necessarily need separate AppleIDs, but you need to set the Send and Receive for Messages to different addresses (Settings App > Messages).

This did though: I download the newest version of itunes (through Internet Explorer - Google Chrome wouldn't work). It pulled in my entire library thank goodness and then I plugged my iphone 4s into the computer. I let itunes find it, did a complete backup in icloud, then did a restore. Entire process took a couple of hours, but I now have imessage and facetime back. I was about ready to give up on Apple and go get a different phone ~

DaveI'm having the same problem. I came from Verizon, and activated about an hour ago. I got the 2 free text messages from AT&T and can send, but not receive. My friend who transferred from TMobile on Friday night had the same exact problem. He had to call a number, and have them fix some thing in his billing that was not correct. I am trying to get the number from him. It is an AT&T thing.
