Spammers harvest email address from a variety of sources. Just because your family members name is on the email does not mean that your family members email was hacked. But it's a good idea you let them know you did receive that email. In the meantime do not respond to the email and delete it from your device.

No Mac viruses are propagated through email.
Be vigilant for suspicious activity as you normally should be, but do not download or install some "anti-virus" utility in an effort to fix a problem that does not exist. That's a well-worn path to certain misery.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Emails - about purchases that i have not made

I just received an email about a purchase i have supposedly made with an unregistered device .
When i click the sign in link on the email - i get a few boxes asking my bank details - this i did not fill out since i know i have not bought anything for about three years . I then returned the email and it just bounced back to me . I then loaded up iTunes - checked my purchase history and guess what? its not listed !
Im assuming this is a scam ? please can someone assure me apples store is concrete in regard to purchases ?
Has anyone else had this happen recently? i received this email early this morning...

Yes, that is a common form of scam and is reported here frequently.
You were correct to check your Purchase History to see if there was really a purchase, and to avoid entering any account/bank details.

Beware this is a common phishing scam: you get an authentic-looking email saying your account has been charged - usually a significant amount of money, to get your attention - and "click here" to confirm. Don't do that.
Check your purchase history as King_Penguin wrote. If the purchase does not appear, delete the email and forget about it.

That's because you created your account in Taiwan. please contact Skype customer service and ask that your account be unlinked from our Taiwanese Partner.

Did Apple/iTunes send out email about store credit?

I got a strange email last night purporting to be from the iTunes store asking if I knew that I had store credit with the iTunes store, and containing a link for me to sign in and find out about my credit. It looked like phishing email, but could not find any contact email address on the Apple website to which I could forward it. Please advise if it is legit or (if not) what the proper Apple email address is so I can report it. Thanks.

I got it too. It included the following:
"Dear iTunes Customer,
Did you know that you have Store credit in your iTunes Store account with the account name: XYZXYZ? Your Store credit is good toward any song or album, TV show or season, movie, book, audiobook, or application download. To check your balance, please sign in by clicking the account link in the upper-right corner of the iTunes Store."
It is apparently not phishing, since it sent you to the Store, not to its own link. But feel free to ignore it.
