These are user-to-user forums, nobody on here will know what the problem with the previous purchase might be.
Does the name and address on your credit card match exactly the name and address on your iTunes account, and have you checked with your card issuer to see if they are ones who are declining it ? You can contact the iTunes Store Customer Service department at no charge using the form on their Support page (select the category and subcategory closest to the issue you're reporting and you'll find an "Email Us" button) and explain your problem to them.

We do have a place in the UK which we could use as an address, but for various reasons it gets a bit complex even though we still have a UK bank account. We moved to France when there were no iDevices and apps around, just bought the occasional music, so it wasn't a problem. Funny thing is I can't even download the free UK bank app because it's not available in the French store .
I'll live with the problem for now as we plan to move back to the UK in a year or so - we miss the weather . -

can't download anything from app store or itunes. everytime i try to install an app i get this error "there is a billing problem with a previous purchase. please update ur payment method". i have recently changed my visa debit card and home adress and when i make these changes i still get the same error.
will u please help me out?Are you listing the billing address for the card correctly? The address in the iTunes/MAS account must match the address on your bill exactly.

Why won't the App Store let me download things that are free, just because I don't have money on my card sometimes, it's free so I just don't get it??
You can try to make a new account on iTunes Store if you didnt have yet.
I had the same problem with iTunes Store, the only thing you can do is to put some money on that credit card you are using with you account. iTunes Store already keeping some money for the last purchase you made you can see all info on the Account option and then Purchase history ... -

So I recently updated my iPod and it crashed while doing this and made me restore my iPod, which took off all of my apps and music. Once my iPod was restored I tried to dowload my music but then it told me to sign in to view billing information. I checked through it and when I pressed done it told me my payment method was declined, and then earlier today I tried to download a free app and the same thing happened.

My Indian counterparts who are as conservative as I am, and do not use any credit card...
I use a virtual credit card for every purchase on app store.
Off late, I m getting a message from apple that there was some trouble with my previous purchase ( when actually there was none) ... And my apps are not being updated due to the virtual credit card hitch ...
Any body experience same problem..if yes, then how to tackle it?

I have tried to update 6 apps but they are all frozen .
They either say loading or installing but are doing nothing. I would delete them and try to reinstall, but one is no zombies allowed and i don't want to lose the game I. You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
