I Web When brining in Photo's Size?

Hi,
I am trying to build a website through i web.  I have quite a few images (photos) that I would like to include.  I shoot with a Canon D-40 and often shoot in RAW or large jpgs. I bring them in to Aperture, so they are often large files.  Set up for printing in Aperture more than web I believe.
So my question is, when dragging them in to the i web page, do I need to "save as" a smaller file?
If that is the case what would be a good size so that they could be large and still look good. (I have seen 640 X 480 50k to 60k) (or 800 X 600) 60k to 80k size).
I would rather have less pictures and a better quality when viewed.
My second question is can you have your image "enlarge" when someone clicks on it at my i web site.  I seem to be getting conflicting information about this point.  Is i web limited in what you see is what you get.  In other words a kind of slideshow format or single scrolling through, but not able to get a closer look at the image.  Thanks for any guidance on this.
Also sorry one more question, I also create small films and would like to share one or two at a time, can i web take a quicktime file from Final Cut Pro, I see it likes i movie, but I never really use that program.
I understand this has been a long set of questions, so if you can answer any part of my questions, I would appreciate that vey much.
Thanks,
Jan

A typical iWeb photo page and associated slideshow can be seen in this demo page: iPhoto Book as an iWeb Slideshow. Photos are automatically scaled to 800 x 600 pixels for the grid and slideshow mode.
There are numerous ways to add movie files to iWeb:  with the Movies page layout or via HTML snippets and various code.  Any Quicktime file added as is will not be visible on any computer that does not have Quicktime installed. But there are ways to present them that don't need Quicktime.
All photos are going to be reduced to 72 dpi as far as resolution is concerned.  You would have to try a photo page with some of your photos, publish to a folder on your hard drive and open the site locally with your browser.  Then compare the image with one outside of iPhoto that you'd be comfortable with.
There are numerous other slideshow/presentation formats other than just those in iWeb.  Some of them can be viewed on these demo pages:

  • When uploading photos, the size is halved

I use pro photo websites for selling photos, but when I upload photos recently the size of these photo is halved. This is not accepted by these sites, they want max size.
Aperture settings for Web export are Jpeg, image quality 12 web thumbnails/web detail.
With these sites you have to use to uploader from that website eg shutterstock.com or fotolia.com
    anyone an idea?

    Hi, S.L.O.
Thanks for the idea, I have tested it and it works.
It is a lot of extra work to export the photos from Aperture to a separate file.
With your solution I determined that the problem seems to be in Aperture. Anyone an idea to solve the aperture problem?

Yeah - I tried that, several times; each time I get "iTunes is restoring the software on this iPhone" and after about 30 minutes the screen on the phone lights up again with the same screen I had before.  After that ... nothing.

I don't know what instructions you may have followed, but as long as you "signed out" , then you will be fine.

  • Photo files size when importing from camera, uploading to facebook

When I import photos from my camera to iPhoto, then upload them to facebook, they are not the original size. This is my first mac and first time to use iPhoto so maybe that's normal. Is there a setting I need to change? How do I know if the files I have imported are being saved on my computer with their original specs? I am hesitant to clear the pics from my camera, fearing I might lose their original quality!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
As for facebook, when using my old pc the photos remained the original size after uploading. It wasn't until I used iPhoto that they began to upload in a smaller version.
Are you referring to file size as in KB or MB or image size as in pixel dimension. As Terence pointed out I doubt if Facebook will accept a full image files at the original size. Most are in the MB range and Facebook would run out of storage space in no time.
It might very well be that iPhoto will resize the pixel dimension of the photos to a "standard" size for uploading and Facebook then downsizes the actual file size. That means compressing the file to make a smaller file but not a smaller image.

  • When I export photos from Aperture, the pixel dimensions are halved thus losing data.  I have set the export preferences to export at original size, to no avail.  This happens even if I just drag to the desktop and then back, or if I export into my iphoto

When I export photos from Aperture to desktop or iphoto I lose pixels.  The pixel dimensions are halved, despite setting the export preference to export at original size.  Anyone know why or how to correct this?

Dragging an Image from Aperture exports the Preview.  Preview parameters are set on the Previews tab of Aperture preferences.
Are you seeing the same results when you export using one of the export commands?
Is so, confirm that the settings in the selected Image Export Preset ("Aperture➞Presets➞Image Export") truly represent those in the Image Export Preset's name.

    Hi -
I can't tell from your post which specific jam you are experiencing.
I found the following on the HP.com support web site at
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c01450544&jumpi...
On this page are a lot of possible jam causes and solutions.  This one is a description I think sounds similar to your report.
    Common causes of jams
Cause: When printing on lightweight paper or on jobs with heavy toner coverage, paper is wrapping on the fuser causing Fuser Delay Jam or Fuser Wrap Jam messages.
Solution: Set the LIGHT MEDIA optimize mode on the Print Quality menu to ON .
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?

Q: Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?
    FAQ revised 25 April 2009
Ans: Prior to version 1.3 Lightroom did not support 1:1 preview rendering during import, the actual options for  Initial Previews being:  Embedded or  Standard. However, more recent versions allow four types of previews to be rendered during import (i.e.  Minimal, Embedded & Sidecar, Standard, and  1:1). It's also worth noting the following on Lightroom import behaviour:
    1.  Minimal (Lightroom default) or Embedded & Sidecar is by far the quickest method for getting your photos into the Lightroom catalog. However, the lack of Standard, which is the minimum that Lightroom can actually work with, means that the application will render standard-sized on demand (i.e. as thumbs/photos become visible within the photo Content area). Asking Lightroom to undertake this task at the same time as you're trying to use the application will result in sub optimal performance.
    2. Importing your photos with the  Standard preview selected within the Import dialog will take longer than 1 above, but on completion Lightroom will already have previews that match the minimum requirement for working in the Library. Assuming that you won't be looking at every image at 100% (i.e 1:1) then this preview size will allow you to quickly review, rate, label, even make quick colour/tone adjustments, etc the photos within the Library module. If you need to see a photo at 100% then Lightroom will render that preview on demand (while it's being rendered you'll see the "Rendering Preview" overlay appear at bottom of preview).  Note that when using a 23" or larger monitor it to is best to set the Standard sized previews so that they are rendered at 2048 pixels
    3. Importing your photos with the  1:1 preview size selected will result in Lightroom taking even longer to complete the import process than would have been the case if standard-sized had been chosen. 1:1 previews also take up significantly more disk space than standard-sized.
If you're not going to be working on the photos immediately after import but do need to get them into Lightroom as quickly as possible, then the best option would be to choose import option 1. Once the photos have been imported choose either  Render Standard-sized Previews or  Render 1:1 previews from Library module Library>Previews menu.

When I search these forums for "CFCopyFormattingDescription", I find a bunch of crash reports posted that look almost exactly the same as mine.  It appears there's a bug in iPhoto, perhaps when reading metadata from the JPG file (readRawTiffPropsFromPath).
Interestingly, the Preview app can open and display the file just fine.  I even opened the inspector and it showed all of the TIFF and exif metadata just fine, no crash.  The file also opens just fine on Windows.
Now how do we get the attention of the iPhoto development team so I can send them the photos, have them reproduce the crash, and fix it?

  • Save for Web isn't using the correct size of artboard

I've been using CS5 for about 5 days now and have just run into this problem.
My artboard is 800x600 px.  I have 6 layers of an animation I need to export as pngs so I can manipulate them in Imageready (yes, I still use it.)
I Save for Web, export as CSS layers, original size is 800x600 px, new size is 800x600 px (I don't touch those settings), art optimized and clip to artboard is checked.
But when I Save and check my files, not only are they 550x90 (the size of the art on the artboard) but they're cut off on the right side.  It's like Illustrator is saving them as actual size, registared to 0,0 (top right corner) of my artboard.
I need to save my layers using save for web so I can drag them into other animated files in Imageready.  I need them at 800x600 px because that's the size of my final art and it's easy to center a lot of layers if they're all the same size.
I can post image files if my question doesn't make sense.

    UPDATE:
I've been experimenting.  My artboard is 800x600 px.  I have 2 layers.  My artwork is 900x700 on both layers.
I Save For Web with Clip to Artboard checked.
I save a jpeg and my file is 800x600.
I save a png and my file is 800x600.
I save as png and check Export As CSS Layers and my 2 layers are 900x700.  This ONLY seems to happen with the Export as CSS Layers checked.
Also, I use File->Export->PNG and check Use Artboards and my file is 800x600.
I use File->Export->JPEG and check Use Artboards and my file is 800x600.
I use File->Export->BMP but I can't check Use Artboards, it's greyed out and uncheckable.  Huh?  I need to export my image as a BMP at 800x600.
    I don't understand what I'm missing here.

  • Photo attachment size in Mail

    Hi
When I attach photos into a mail, they appear as actual size.
I would like all my attachment photos to appear as icons.
I can then change the size of the photos into an icon but have to change each one individually.
Is there a way to do a defult setting so that when I attach photos, they automatically go in as icons?
    Cheers
    Woodsie

    Folks
This is not an issue, it's a feature. By this I mean it's intended behaviour. Apple have not "fixed it" because as far as they are concerned it's not broken. If you would like the behaviour changed then
    1. Install Mail-Attachments-Iconizer. I see one poster mentions he had issues with it but I've used for years with none.
    2. Always send your messages as Plain text: (Mail -> Preferences -> Composing). This will help with the pic arriving embedded. Though remember, the settings on the recipient's email client is the biggest factor in deciding how the email will display on their machine. Also, remember there's no reason why any other client "should" behave exactly like Eudora.
    3. If you want Mail to be changed there is no point in posting here. This is a User to User forum, and Apple do not promise to read it. So, if you want more options, a new default setting or even new preferences: Contact the developers of Mail:
Mail menu -> Provide Mail Feedback
The more folk that do, the better the chance of things being changed.
    Regards
    TD

  • How do I make a photo file size smaller? The photo is .jpg.

I need to make a photo file size smaller for some other uses.
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iphoto 5.0.4

Haha yes i forgot that you may not be using Apples Mail. Lets try the export then file>export, then under the heading "format" click JPG. Then click "scale images no larger then:" in the width field type "800" then the height field should change by itself. Thats what i do for emailing, it's usually the best trade between quality & size, that should be small enough to email. Best wishes JAG
P.S. when you first click "scale images no larger then" what's already in the width height fields? thats your actual photo resolution.

  • Photo File Size and Photoshop processing

On  previous discussion, Steve Grisetti noted that problems with burning are sometimes associated with photo file size.  The post stated that Photoshop Elements has a batch processing selection that can resize photos all at once.  I when to Photoshop, selected process multiple file, selected source, save in same as source, and resize images 1000.  When I viewed my photos after, about 50 of my photos were now duplicates of other photos For example, I put all my pictures in timeline order prior to doing my video.  If I found a NEW photo after I had already scanned and named the photos, I would place the NEW photo in the picture folder by adjusting accordingly:  1.jpg, 2.jpg 3.1.jpg 3.jpg The 3.1.jpg would be the NEW photo.  Photoshop replaced 3.1jpg with the picture in 3jpg.  Does anyone know how to restore my photos back to the original "3.1jpg"?  The backup is not accessible at this time.

If I understand you correctly you have been using the renaming feature and the parameters you used caused file1 to be renamed to a pre-existing filename (file2). If this is so then you probably have lost the original file2. An undelete utility may help (try Piriform Recuva).
For the future when using batch conversion it is good practice to select a new folder for the outputted files.
It is also good practice to burn all image originals to a CD or DVD immediately after importing from your camera. This way you can always recover originals.
Here are a couple of screenshots, the first from Elements Organizer and the second from Photoshop Elements. Which one did you use and what parameters did you enter?

  • Photo Download Size

All photos were brought into the web page by using the iWeb "Media" button and navigating to the iPhoto library.
Then, in iWeb, I go to *Inspector > Photos*
Under "Photo Sharing," I set the Photo Download Size to "Original (Full Quality)."
Then, I test my web page. The downloads are roughly 400K. As a sanity check, I go to iPhoto and export. As expected, the sizes are roughly 4 Meg.
What am I doing wrong? What is it that I don't understand?

Actually, the issue is even worse. As I indicated in the first post, I'm unable to allow full-sized downloads. Further, for those photo pages where I do not wish to allow any downloads at all, I'm unable to turn off the downloading capability! I discussed these issues with an Apple tech and he duplicated my results. He's now investigating to determine if there is any workaround.
