I will studying in the UK for the next year and want to know if an unlocked iPhone 4S with a new sim card purchased in the UK will work as opposed to getting a new phone? There seem to be differeing opinions on this.

Iphone 4s only has one version so it should work world wide in any carrier..As long as it's and unlocked version ofcourse.

Erase the device and restore it from the correct iCloud backup:
Go to Settings>General>Reset and click on Erase All Content and Settings (this will erase your phone so you can start from scratch)
Then follow the instructions in this article to Restore from iCloud backup:

Iphone 4 keeps telling me it needs to be restored, but says my iPhone hasn't got a sim card installed when the same one is in there as always

my iPhone 4 said it needed to be restored, so i plugged it in but now it says there is no sim in the device, please insert one, so i thought my sim card was playing up and got a new one today, but turns out it still says the same thing..

You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.

We have an old iPhone 3G that is no longer on a Bell contract. We have installed Apps on the iphone through the computer but I cannot get the the wifi to work on it. Does it need to be under contract with a carrier or have a SIM card in order for wifi to work?

I've done this with unlocked GSM phones in the past and would like that option in the future--but I'm wondering if I were to get a VZ (CDMA) phone if that'd be possible? You should go onto the Tmobile web site and look around. Very soon a pop up window will ask you if you want to chat. You can try asking for someone who knows Spanish (if you prefer), they might have someone available who can chat with you in Spanish.
I give this suggestion because I remember on the Tmobile website, you can order on line, but they let you choose to pay only a little money up front, then pay off the rest over 24 months, or you can choose to pay for it in full. However, their ordering process does not say whether the paid for in full phone is going to be unlocked or not.
It may not be, You may have to make a request and say that since you have paid in full please unlock. I am not so sure that a paid for in full phone is automatically sold in unlocked state.
This is why I suggest you talk to Tmobile to get a definite answer.
Unless someone else on this forum knows for sure? Hope someone else jumps in to answer. But the best way is to ask for yourself directly from Tmobile.

Make sure you do NOT buy the Verizon model - it works on CDMA technology and will not connect to cellular networks in the UK. If you want the 3G, make sure to buy the AT&T model. Or of course you can buy the WiFi-only model if you don't need cellular data.

I already have, I contacted Orange yesterday and they said I will receive a text to confirm the registrastion for my new SIM Card, they said the text would arrive between 2 and 24 hours and its been over 24 hours with no text recieved
