I wish I had not upgraded from leopard to SL

I have almost all of the various problems users have described herein, In addition, regular crashes. Not only non Mac applications but things like mail and system prefs. I just tried to open system prefs and it crashed the entire system. One application called transmission is particulary sensitive. If you drag the curser too fast it will crash the app and sometimes the system. Things like DiskWarrior, permissions, cleaning caches, etc have no effect. All revisions are installed. My first install of SL was a clean install. I am running the same apps as I ran under leopard. My old FW800 is running the same apps under 10.5 with no problem.

You will need your original Leo install DVD to return to Leo. Before doing so, I would make a bootable clone of my Sno install for purposes of backup, possible migration, and fail-safe--even if you have a TM backup. Your only probably trouble-free way of returning to Leo is erase and install.
Your only problem should be migrating from your clone in a way that avoids your Sno problems. In this regard, you generally can drag and drop you data files from Sno without issue (see links below--use Preferential Treatment before migrating your data and the by-hand migration guide to accomplish your migration). I would reinstall my apps by hand. You probably would be safe just dragging and dropping those that are installed by dragging an app icon to your applications folder. I would not migrate your settings. The remaining issue is dealing with the remaining contents of your user folder(s).
I would acquire [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] and use this app to fix the your user preferences--the items in your User/Library/Preferences folder. After doing so, use [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to do the actual migration of the items in your user folder.

  • I really am struggling to like the upgrade, but the screensaver problems are awful...I have tried most of the solutions offered here, and the problem still persists...PLEASE fix it, Apple. I wish I had not upgraded my ipad.

I am really struggling to like this upgrade, but the screensaver problems are so disappointing...I have tried most of the suggested solutions but the outsized photo problem still persists on my ipad. Pretty close to a deal breaker!  Please fix this, Apple.  I really wish I had not upgraded...can it be undone?  I really dislike the camera roll, too : (

No one from Apple monitors these forums, so it isn't the place to voice complaints or suggestions. Go here:

    There's a screensaver with iOS? I don't think so.

  • So frustrated wish I had not changed from sprint!

Ok to start we have only been customers since October 2011! We switched over from sprint to verizon. Thinking this would be great my father ranted and raved on the excellent service and phones and things of that sort. So ok our contract with sprint/nextel was up we had been with them for over 12 years!!!! Their Customer service had been declining as well as their phone selection. Well when we signed on with verizon we brought all 4 lines over with us. My husband, myself, our oldest daughter and my mother in law are all on our account. Well I had not really known what phone to get at the time. I feel like an idiot because I was used to Blackberries and never had an issue with them until the 9330 came out. So I ordered the LG Ally BOY was that a mistake! I have never in my life encountered such a piece of crap. So they send me two replacements within a month of the same phone.....ok well at this point I am frustrated, fed up and ready to scream. they then send me a Droid 2 because that is "better and more reliable" than the LG Ally. Well let me just call ** on that. Within a weeks time i had to have it replaced twice! Was told by the CSR in Tech Support that they would be sending me a "brand new" phone not a refurb. Ok I go along with that and low and behold NOPE that wasnt the case. they sent me a refurb that no one could hear me on! I am searching for a new job and have put my resume out there and have applied to jobs. what happens if one of them calls me back and they cannot hear me!? So I call BACK less than week later and am told well we can switch it out for another phone of your choice for the same value. Ok great no problem! I said thats fine send me the 8gb iPhone in white. They said no problem. we will get that overnighted to you. he comes back on the phone after verifying everything and then proceeded to tell me oh well we cant because it has to be within 14 days of you receiving the first phone..............WHAT? your system stated that you could send me this phone and now you tell me oh well youre going to have to go back to the same piece of crap you started with! I hang up frustrated and upset because this is my lifeline as my husband is a truck driver and I have severe medical issues that if i need medical attention I cant call because I cannot be heard! So the manager calls me back stated that they could send me the droid 4. Ok thats fine no problem I will give it a shot. Well at this point I have received a phone.............NOT the phone they told me they were going to send but a Droid 3! This phone freezes, this phone is slow, it does not hold a signal where as the other did. it doesnt ring when it is supposed to and forget sending a message on it! Droid really has proven to me that its a piece! The battery which is brand new dies within an hour and I have nothing constantly running on the phone. I think its fair that they send me the phone that I was originally promised by the tech support rep. we havent been with this company long enough to go through this kind of mess and we surely pay more than we paid with Sprint so as much as I have paid this company for phone service already I think it is owed to us. we are new customers for goodness sake and someone in this horrid company should be able to do so.

I appreciate the reply but the implication that I do not know how to use technology was down right rude! Kidding or not this is the crappiest service I have ever had outside of Cricket. When we were with Sprint neither of us had issues with our phones. This is a first for us and we were talked out of getting phones that we were interested in by someone just trying to "make a sale". I am not using any apps that I download besides facebook and Gmail. I dont care to use other things of that sort. But given the crap I have been through with Android phones and speaking to others with Android phones. They are not made well at all.

  • Wish I had not "upgraded" to Mtn Lion

Wish I hadn't bought Mtn Lion.  Many changes, less user-friendly, lost use of Photo Shop Elements, AppleWorks, many more minor compaints. Have been a consistent and devout Apple/Mac user since 1985.  Never felt this lack of confidence in an Apple product.  No questions - just venting - but I still don't feel any better.

Yes, I did just upgrade.  And yes, I'm a bit of a retrograde.  I have never bought a new anything until the old one was worn out, otherwise useless, or the new one was so much improved that it didn't make sense to NOT buy it.  Staying with Snow Leopard along with the other old app versions you mention all qualify: They worked fine for my simple needs - UNTIL an Apple pro convinced me:  "You've GOT to get Mtn Lion - it's great!", etc.  I am sorry I did.  Snow Leopard and the other apps "weren't broken", as they say, but I drank the KoolAid.  I "tried to fix 'em".
After I wallow a bit more, I'll return to my Apple Store and learn about all the slick and wonderful new Mtn Lion things that I don't use or need, then probably join all the lemmings lined up to do the same with Maverick. Planned obsolescence obviously refers to more than what sits in my driveway.

  • Prior version to new one had facility to bring up frequent used sites. Now very frustrated, as I have to type in these sites each time I use the new system. I wish I had not upgraded! Now takes much longer. There is no stream lining here.

When I would use laptop before installing upgraded latest version of mozilla. I could go to frequent used site log and just click on a site and I would be straight into site of preference. Now this no longer exists with new version. I cannot find this anywhere, so now I have to type in each site I need access to. You have made it far less easier to use and it is much slower. Am I missing something here? Like google with there chrome version it is worse not better. I removed that too. Please advise otherwise your latest version will go the same way!

  • I cannot retrieve voicemail messages on my iphone having installed the new ios7 software. This is extremely annoying and very bad news as I also use my phone for business. I wish I had not upgraded to ios7. Please assist if you can, many thanks

Can anyone assist. I've downloaded the new ios 7 software for my iphone 4s phone. Ever since doing so I often cannot access
messages via voicemail. It is infuriating & potentially very costly as I sometimes take business calls on the phone. Can anyone
help as Apple expect you to pay $20 for assistance which is outrageous as it is, I assume, a glitch with their new software as all was
working fine previosly with the old operating system on the same phone. When I try to click on specific message I get a grey transparent
screen shading top & bottom of the visual display. The message refuses to play. When you click the grey shaded area it disappears but this makes no difference as the message still won't play. What a mess! Please if you can assist if you know what this problem is and how to resolve it
    Many thanks

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

  • I upgraded from leopard to lion and my epson printer will not work. I get a communication error

I upgraded from leopard to lion and my Epson printer will not work. I get a error message comunication error. What can Ido to fix this I bought a new USB cord and it did no good.

I suddenly had the same thing happen. I've had my new iMac for 3 months and at first my Epson Artisan 50 worked okay then yesterday I started getting the same error message other people on this support site have gotten. I tried ALL the advice given (deleating the Epson files from the library folder, etc. reinstalling older software) and nothing worked. With the newest iMac (and operating system) you cannot pick and choose which version of Epson software you want. You must use the 10.8 version or it simply will not open when you've downloaded it. Finally I found the comment above by den.thed and tried the OS X Mountain Lion: Reset the printing system suggested. As much as I hated to lose all my printing presets that took a lot of expiermentation to set up, I was desperate. I tried it and it worked. Now I just have to consult my old computer and try to recreate all my printing set ups.  So to others with Epson / Apple 10.8 issues this may help when everything else fails. Thanks den.thed for your advice.

  • I have a hdd from late 2009 that I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd.  Do I need to buy a new copy of mountain lion to install on the ssd?  If not, then what is the procedure to transfer?

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

  • What happened to my User folder? Now there is a default.migrated folder instead. I did not upgrade from W7. Always had W8.

Is my User folder gone? I have no idea what happened to it. Is it possible that a virus has redirected the folder or has placed it somewhere else for access? I have not upgraded from W7.  W8 is the factory installed OS on my system. Any thoughts on
    what happened?

  • I've read similar questions and answers, but I am still terrified to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard. The only reason I want to is because I received an iPad which requires an updated system. I have an external hard drive. I have the disks to upgrade

I've read similar questions and have studied the answers, but I am still terrified to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my macbook pro. The only reason for doing it is in order to sync my macbook pro with my iPad. I do have an external drive which automatically backs up every hour. BUT.......I am techno-ignorant as well as techno-paranoid. I have the disks to update to snow leopard but knowing doing so may likely change/alter/lose/obliterate my current set-up, it actually makes me feel sick to think of it.
Years ago when updating via Apple Protection Plan tech support, my screen actually went blank, everything gone! The tech told me not to worry, that "we" would be able to restore things, but several hours later I was still looking at a primitive looking screen that wasn't anything like what I had before. His language was too technical, in that there was an assumption I understood things I had zero understanding of. Example: partition my external drive.
Anyway, living hundreds of miles from an Apple service provider, and no Apple techs in my community, I had to wait for a trip to an Apple Store where one of the wonderful guys at the genius bar spent a ton of time getting things back to normal and actually explaining it enough that I had a vague understanding.
So now I am in the predicament again and won't know what to do after installing the new disks and finding a likely mess or absence of documents etc. on my computer. I don't know how to access the external drive, and even if I did I wouldn't know how to move stuff from that to my computer.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm in the same boat as you, I've used Mac's since day one and neglected my Windows education and now it has come to haunt me as I have to learn it like a school kid.
Nearly 99% of all businesses and nearly 95% of everyone use Windows, Steve Jobs declared "The desktop wars are over, Microsoft won" a long time ago.
By 2015 tablets are going to be selling to consumers more than traditional computers, your living proof, you got a iPad.
Apple has already discontinued the Xserver, the Xraid, the MacBooks and the 17" Macbook Pro.
Apple has introduced BootCamp in OS X 10.6 and up, this allows a partition and drivers so one can install Windows on a Mac.
    https://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Why do you think they named it "BootCamp"
You can't run a older OS X version longterm like you have with 10.5 anymore, Mac's are being targeted for attacks and older OS X versions are dropped for security updates.
In fact your Mac might still be part of the 750,000 Mac strong Flashback botnet or infected.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_BackDoor.Flashback
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/04/how-to-check-forand-get-rid-ofa-mac-flashba ck-infection/
See here, Apple has no security updates for 10.5 users and soon 10.6 is going to be ignored next.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1222
1-1.5 years is the OS X upgrade cycle. Change everytime like it or not.
So I'm thinking about your long term future and how you obviously don't like change, need local assistance like it appears you first claimed.
So buy a new Mac and upgrade your OS X version whenever Apple shows it in AppStore.
When your machine can no longer upgrade to the newest OS X version, then you've got about another 2 more years of security updates before you have to buy a new machine or risk running a insecure one.
Learn here how to go about fixing your own machine and creating backups/bootable clones this way your not having to drive several hundred miles for a software or boot drive repair. Simply reverse clone your troubles away.

I'm of the maturity and experience that I know a Mac isn't always the best solution for everyone and even Apple doesn't provide the proper hardware, support or features for everyone. Why only store locations in high traffic ritzy areas?
Our SteveJobs fan here is under 18 years old with good eyes, he's not older like we are with bad or failing eyesight.
The new Mac's  have hard to see glossy screens and the type/UI can't be scaled up easily to accomadate our older eyes, however a Windows 7 machine does allow up to 150% scale of the UI, type etc., and also there are anti-glare screen PC's and just about no more anti-glare screen Mac's.
I wrote this User tip in case you have trouble seeing the screen, at least you can scale the web browsing up
Web browsing for hard of seeing users
Apple might still be selling the anti-glare 15" non-retina on their online store, it's the "high resolution/anti-glare model"
But I can get a 17" 1080i HD anti-glare Windows 7 laptop at Sager for a lot more performance and screen size for the price than a Mac.
    https://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=category_browse&selected_cat=2
Screen size is important as the UI and text can be scaled up for easier reading.
Of course you do now have the option of having Windows pre-installed alongside OS X to begin your transition to the dark side.
Just call and they will accomondate, hold the option/alt key at boot time to swtich operating systems.
    http://www.macmall.com/
Windows 7 looks just as good as OS X, the secret is having a good monitor with most PC's come with don't.
Good Luck and I hope I've given you a lot to think about.

  • Upgrading from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6 without CD

i wannt to upgrade from leopard 10.5.8 to snow leopard 10.6 but when i install from the snow leopard cd the installation stucks after a few minutes an all i see is a grey display witht the apple boot logo, how can i now upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard?

Ok... I was just making sure you had the correct disc.
Better boot from your original Mac install disc and run Disk Utility. The startup disk may need repairing before you can upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.

  • What happens to iweb-built site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3), and subsequently upgrade to 10.6.8 or even 10.7? Will fonts stay the same? Will layout change? Or anything else change? Thanks

What happens to iweb-build site when I upgrade from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.3) and subsequently update that to 10.6.8 or even to 10.7? Evidently iweb has been discontinued. I have version 3.0.3 of iweb now but understand that there's been an update for OS 10.6 so same question goes for this update.
Will fonts change? Will layout change? Will widgets still work? Links? Will Google Analytics PlugIn still work?
(Since MobileMe is disappearing, I now save iweb site to local folder on my computer, then upload it to GoDaddy using Cyberduck. I run Google Analytics plug in on folder before its uploaded.)
My computer, MacBook Pro came with iweb, which has been updated to 3.0.3. Since iweb is discontinued, will upgrade of operating system just ignore iweb so that iweb will run the same as before? Or will it wipe it out? Or change how it currently works (questions above).
    Thanks

As you now know iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
NOTE: the iLife 11 boxed version Is no longer available at the online Apple Store.  To get a copy you'll have to try Amazon.com or eBay.com.

  • I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and I noticed that I have more capacity available on the Macintosh HD. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

I recently upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on my MacBook and I noticed that I have more capacity on the Macintosh HD than before the upgrade. I checked my files and applications and they are still on my computer and nothing appears to be missing. Before the upgrade I had around 111 GB capacity with around 10.50 GB available on the Mac HD but now after the upgrade I have 119 GB capacity and 20.92 GB available. Can capacity on the HD change after an OS upgrade?

No, but the upgrade removed unneeded PowerPC code and changed the way free space is determined.
