I wish the iPad had a simple desktop/document launcher

I have played continuously with my iPad for about 3 weeks.
The one thing I find to be a struggle is the moving around of documents between programs, etc. It would be cool to have a document launcher, like a Dragthing for the iPad, or be able to put a document on the desktop of an iPad just like you would an app icon. You could have a bunch of 'windows' like you do now for your apps, then have windows just for documents that you frequently need to open... Wow, would that make life easy.
I know, I know, the iPad is not supposed to take the place of a laptop, but this would get it close for me...

What version of iOS are you using?  Some people were having this problem before, and it was fixed when they updated to iOS 5.

  • I really wish my iPad had Flash. There are things I can watch on my Mac, but not on my iPad. Inconvenient.

Is the iPad ever going to allow Flash to be installed?

    Kilby,
Operating iPads in elementary schools, we've discovered a few ways around the 'no Flash' issue, and they're primarily cloud-based solutions:
Rover (a free app, on iTunes). Discovery Learning provides this app as a way for their client schools to access Discovery's libraries of flash-based interactive content. Works on other sites containing Flash as well.
Remote desktop apps: control to your Mac/PC from your iPad and view desired Flash content that way. I like 'SplashTop' (http://www.splashtop.com/remote) for its relatively easy configuration and good on-screen controls from the iPad.
More 'enterprise' solutions: Windows Remote Desktop -- try 'iTap Mobile RDP' app (iTunes) on your iPad to log into your Windows account at work. You get your full PC and all your files at your finger tips on your iPad.
Look for online subscriptions that offer HTML5 support (plays in Safari).
Then there's "OnLive Desktop", a cloud-based computing service (free or 'Plus') you can access via iPad. @Pogue recently wrote about it (NYTImes Feb 22, 2012: 'Windows on the iPad, and Speedy').
Stepping back a little, I think some of the iPad's popularity is due to how effective it is at slacking off. It's energy efficient, connected, and fun to use--while enjoying the computations of other 'real' computers. Still, it can be a pain in the @ when there's 'heavy lifting' to do.

  • I wish the ipad video player was the same as the iphone video player...

The ipad video player is not as good as the iphone video player.
I'm specifically referring to how it handles chapters and episode info.
    1 - episode info
With the iphone, when I'm looking at the list of videos, in addition to the show title, it displays the season and episode #.
With the ipad, it only shows show title.  And since episodes are for some reason sorted by show title, it's impossible to play the show back in episode # order, since it's not displayed...
    2- chapters
With the iphone, when a video with chapter marks is being played back, as part of the play controls, there is a chapter option so you can see what and where the chapter marks are and can easily go to them directly.
With the ipad, this chapter option is not there.  You can only get to a specific chapter by forwarding chapters one-by-one.
No idea why the two players can't have the same functionality.
Hopefully someone from apple can see this and consider it for a future update.
(is this the best way to get them info/suggestions for future updates???)

Actually, this is the best way to get feedback to Apple for this. Apple employees only moderate this forum for abuse and violations of the terms of use.

  • When I connect my iPad mini to my iMac it recognizes the iPad but my Garage Band documents are not available for transfer. How can I fix this?

I'm having trouble transfering my garage band documents from my iPad mini to my iMac. iTunes recognizes the device, but when I select the app to add or save files to... nothing appears there, as if I had not recorded anything on my iPad. Can anyone help me?

    Hi there
to make your files to appear in the apps section of iTunes you have to take some  steps.
    - go to Garageband on your iPad
    - tap My Songs to go to the list of your songs (if your are not already there )
    - tap Select
    - select one song
    - tap the share button (top left)
    - tap itunes
    - you are then asked to chose a format. There is an explation for each format.
    - Choose one
    - repeat the last 5 steps  with every song you want to transfer.
    - when your done tap done
The songs should now appear when you connect the iPad.
    Hope that helps

  • After updating my wife's iPad to iOS6 the ipad will not connect to wifi on certain wireless routers. What can we do? Also, same for iPad mini with same router. But iPhone that has iOS5 has no problem connecting.

Need help. Before updating to latest software iOS6 the iPad had no issues connecting on our home router. After updating the iPad will not work. We have a mini iPad with same issue. But I have a iPhone 4S that I chose not to update to iOS6, still has iOS5. It connects no problem to router. Our computers have no issues connecting to router either. There is a software issue with iOS6.0.1 that will not allow certain routers to communicate. What can I do?  Also, the mini iPad stated a newer version of software is out, version 6.0.2 which is supposed to correct the wifi problems. It has helped but still haven't connectivity issues. However, the iPad states software is up-to-date so we cannot update to 6.0.2 even through connecting to computer on iTunes. How can that be?

Try going to settings, reset , reset network settings.

  • I have a Pages file that I created on my iPad that I used iCloud to store. There are no backups anywhere of this file. The file is stuck on updating on iCloud and on the iPad the file is inaccessible. There is a black bar over it which greys the file out.

I have a Pages file that I used my iPad to create. iCloud backed this file up to its server. The problem is that my iPad somehow locked itself. I had to restore it, the file was lost on the iPad, and when I went back to iCloud to retrieve the file it said it was Updating. The file is showing on my iPad, but it is greyed out with a black bar across the bottom of it. I have been working on this file for months, and I am not about to lose it! Please can someone tell me how I can get my file to download at least to my iMac.
This file has worked perfectly in the past, and what I didn't realise when the iPad was locked down was that the Airplane Mode was on, to save battery. If that had been on it would have synced it again.
Can anyone help me? I'm supposed to be sending this file (completed) off to a company in three days.
    Thanks

On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac.

  • I attempted to upgrade the software on my iPad and I got a message that said it couldn't restore the iPad software due to an error. Now the iPad has a black scrren with the apple symbol and the processing symbol going around.

I attempted to upgrade the software on my iPad 2 and I got a message that said "unable to restore Ipad due to error". Now the iPad had a black screen with the Apple symbol and the processing symbol going around and around. When I tried to re connect it to iTunes is says "cannot connect to this iPhone due to error". How do I reset the ipad?

Please Get the iPad User Manual for iOS 5.

  • Can the iPad utilize Dropbox and Microsoft Word Documents?

Now a PC user for entire life and want to move to tablet. Now use Dropbox as main storage and have many, many documents, etc. there. Would want to continue this use. Can I do that with iPad?

I personally would answer this question with, "Yes & No"
Yes, Dropbox is supported on the iPad as well as Microsoft Documents (when you use third party applications like Quickoffice or iWork), However I have had some issues finding apps that have full support of those documents. For instance, If I want to search something in a PDF document on my iPad for a certain word or phrase. I have not been able to do so yet. Not using the Dropbox application or Quickoffice Pro.
So it depends on what you are doing with your documents. If you are just viewing, sharing and making minor edits to them, Then I don't think you will have any issues, But if you want to go more in depth with your documents, You may have some trouble.

  • D800 file compatibility:  Has anyone experienced problems with loading D800 files onto the iPad using the camer connector kit?  I have tried both RAW and JPEG using SDHC and CF cards and the iPad(3) doesnt recognise any of the files.

Has anyone experienced problems with downloading Nikon D800 files to the iPad3 using the camer connector kit?  I have tried .RAW and JPEG (of various sizes) on both SD and CF cards, but the iPad doesn't recognise the files.
I have seen various forums discussing Lightroom and PSE updates that are required to process .NEF files but I can't find anything on the iPad/camera connector issue.
I dont have any problem if I put the SD card straight into the SD slot in my iMac and Aperture will process the files fine, but I would really like to be able to download and view files on the move on the iPad.
    Any advice appreciated?
PS - saw something that suggested the iPad had a maximum file size of 16mb for photos, not sure if this is correct, but I have tried smaller JPEG files and they still aren't recognised.

If your camera supports both PTP and Mass Storage Device modes, it may be necessary to use both modes to import all media content.
If some files do not import as expected using one mode, try switching to the other mode and importing again.
Note: Some cameras may refer to PTP as Pictbridge or PTP/Pictbridge.

  • Albums on the iPhone but not the iPad.

Does anyone know why my iPhone will sync with my pc and show photos in albums but my iPad won't? I use the same settings and even tried creating a separate folder organization only for the iPad.

    Mine is working fine.
For the below, I am assuming that when you say PC, it's a windows type computer:
    1) Create a master sync folder on your pc with no photos in the folder at the root level.
    2) Put subfolders in the master folder with photos. Name the subfolders as you wish the ipad photo albums to be named.
    3) Sync the master folder to the ipad by specifying the master folder on the itunes photos tab.
    4) When you complete the sync, go itno the ipad's photo app and you should see the photo albums just like the subfolders in the master sync folder on the pc.
This works great for me on my iphone4 and my ipad.

  • Is the iPad compatible with the Pioneer Appradio?

Hi, I've got some questions about using the Appradio system combined with the iPad. Do you know if I can use the Appradio with an iPad, although it isn't officially supported? Could I buy an external GPS (bluetooth) antenna to use them for navigation purposes? (both don't have one) Is it better to change my new iPad for an iPhone? I don't want to. At least, can I use the iPad as a simple iPod, without the apps? Thank you. I've got these items new, so if I try them, I can't give them back.
Moreover, I found the app in the store, it's iPad-compatible but it appears only in the search results for the iPhone. I don't even know if I could get it...

I'm going to change the iPad 2 (3G) for the 3rd gen. one and I want to choose the right model. I like the 32GB wi-fi one because I can get the amazing Retina display and enough space for my music with a few coins. I'm going to use the Appradio mainly for music, but if I want to use the navigator I've got to upgrade the iPad with an antenna, which would be better than keeping it on the dash. I can bypass the connection through my phone, this would be quite comfortable too. I'm a student and I haven't got so much money; for the same amount of the upgrade, I could think to buy an old iPhone to replace the iPad when I need the navigator.

  • Need way to remote support the ipad 2

I have given one to somebody and would like to find an app that would let me login to the ipad 2 from a desktop/laptop computer over the internet to help set things up for them, etc.
    Any suggestions?

    Roosevelt Jones wrote:
Have you seen this in action? I could find references to iOS device support but I did not really see an example of a remote connection to an iOS screen or even a simulator. I'm just curious about what is out there.
LogMeInRescue+Mobile is the only thing I've found for "remote control" of an iPad/iPhone.  Most things I've seen for "enterprise" from any vendor often require you to speak to their sales rep, thus the lack of examples on their website.

  • Does the ipad have a usb where i can transfer documents

I would like to buy one but have 2 questions. Can I open word docuemtns without buying or downloading anything and can I transfer word or pdf docs via usb?

The iPad supports viewing of Word documents within applications but doesn't provide a separate app for it. For example, if you receive a Word doc in an e-mail you can open and read it.
There is no USB port on the iPad itself for transferring documents. You can sync various applications via the USB cable, and there are a couple that would support you using iTunes to transfer Word documents to the iPad and read them.
However, by far the easiest solution is the cloud one: DropBox. You install DropBox on your iPhone and then either install the DropBox application on a computer or upload files to it via a web browser. DropBox is cloud storage, and whatever you put in your DropBox appears on all your devices that are connected to it (and it can be accessed via web browser). Typically, you'd install DropBox on a computer and when you drag a file into the DropBox folder on your computer, it's accessible to your phone.
If you go this route, keep in mind that the default behavior of DropBox is to leave everything in the cloud. This might be a problem if you wander somewhere that has poor connectivity. For that reason, DropBox permits users to "star" files on their phone, which downloads the file and keeps a local copy on the phone for quick access.
You could drop Word documents into the DropBox folder on your Mac or PC and they'd appear in DropBox on your phone, where you can open and read them as you like.

  • IPad mini for writing word documents?

Can I use the iPad mini for writing word documents etc. Or even if I can use an app and export it for word etc. Is it already loaded app or do I have to buy it?

Pages, Keynote and Numbers make up the iWork's suite of apps.
As long as both iPads are using the same Apple ID for purchases from the App Store you could purchase Pages only once. There are drawbacks for using the same Apple ID on multiple devices when those devices are used by different people.
Pages will export documents in Word format so that can be opened by Word on a Mac or PC. Pages is a nice app but it is not as all encompassing as Word on your regular computer. There is some formatting that can be done in .word that will not translate in Pages. Even with that though I find Pages a good App.

  • I bought  an iPad 3 yesterday; this is an upgrade from the original iPad. I was told that migrating the data would be simple. My desktop is a PC with Windows 7 Professional. I can't find a way to back up my old iPad so I can restore the data to the new

I bought an update to the original iPad an iPad 3. In was told that migrating the data from my old iPad to the new will be a snap. Alas, it isn't. My desktop is a new high end PC that came preloaded with Windows 7 Professional and I have had nothing but problems. My earlier computer was XP and everything, including my Apple interface, in particular iTunes, worked without problems. When I was trying to back up my data from the old iPad to my desktop, the only thing it would do is synchronize, then got an error message to download the latest iTunes, which I did but it still did not work. I have a lot of music both purchased through iTunes and a lot of others which were CDs that were copied to the desktop. I also have a lot of books through Kindle and other books in iBooks and audio books from other sources, plus two iPods I want to sync. I need some advise on where I find the back up feature in iTunes so I can copy all the data on from my old iPad. Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.
