I wish to make a complaint re Latest Flash Player Update

The latest Flash Player update installed Chrome on my PC without asking if I wanted it and without my consent.  This is illegal in Australia and likely other countries too (eg USA).

Michael,
First, the update I witnessed installed McAfee Security Scan, NOT Google toolbar. But you're absolutely right. Installing it with no "opt out" is far less than what I would call a "good practice". That's the reason I DO update all my software, but I do it "manually". I never suggested "not upgrading" or not updating, but rather recommended what I do myself. I have always had a serious problem with people who tell me to do something they would never consider doing, so I don't make a habit of it myself. Yesterday alone I updated AIR and Flash Player on four systems... manually.
I doubt I'll be able to restore your trust in Adobe. ONLY YOU can do that.  As to your complaint, you originally indicated that said behavior was "illegal" and I believe I did a pretty darn good job of explaining why it isn't, because you click the "update" button, regardless of the reason, and your doing so (again, regardless of the reason) implies (if not proves), consent on your part. That's a legal point, even though it doesn't address trust or ethics at all.
When I was at Intuit, we reviewed two separate lawsuits during training on EULA compliance, one was a "Class action" filed by a state Attorney General, alleging that Intuit had installed what amounted to a "rootkit" (Google C-Dilla for more info) on potentially millions of systems without user consent, for the implementation of "anti-piracy" software in TurboTax in 2002. I went to work there in 2003 and I personally issued more than 300 replacement CD-Rs (along with apology letters) that didn't have the C-Dilla on them.
While the court ruled that the software itself caused many problems for the people who were involved in the suit, and that Intuit was liable for damages related to the repair or replacement of affected systems, the ruling magistrate was VERY CLEAR in pointing out that in installing the original software, and "accepting the end user licesne agreement", whether they actually read the whole thing (or any of it at all) beforehand, indicated their consent to install any and all software associated with such agreement. Therefore, the liability was severely limited, and NO puntiive damages could be applied. Several hundred people got free repairs and a few even got new computers, but Intuit made the decision not to use C-Dilla afterward; it was never ordered by the court.
TurboTax is paid software, and Flash Player is free, and C-Dilla was proven to be far more destructive than McAfee, Norton or Google bundled software (it rendered many systems useless), but the principle established by the court was that no one is forced to use TurboTax, and therefore not all of the liability could fall on the developer. Similarly, no one is forced to use Flash Player, or Adobe Reader. That hardly justifies installing third party apps in an update, with no opt out, but it still requires a user initiation to install a "bundled" update, and there ARE options to avoid the bundled software, which are posted in these forums DOZENS of times daily.
As I pointed out, I know of at least one detailed report that was submitted regarding this. It was my intention in reporting it, that someone would make changes that allow users to opt out of unwanted installs when all they're trying to do is update software they see as necessary to get full use and/or enjoyment out of their personal or work computer. Obviously that hasn't happened. I'm not endorsing the practice, or making excuses for it. I already made my position clear on "unwanted" software.
However, I also pointed out that the practice of "bundling software" is industry wide and it ISN'T going to end anytime in the foreseeable future, hence the links I provided and the advice to manually update. Believe me, I fully understand your frustration and I'm on your side. I have to be realistic, though. I have systems with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. One of the Win 8 systems is my laptop I use when meeting with clients. I can't afford it to be down because of an anti-virus conflict, and I refuse to use Google Chrome on it because of the massive resource consumption of Google's excuse for a browser. But I've had to make changes in the way I do things to avoid it, because I'm not going to force a company the size of Adobe to change (as my unheeded report has proven).
I'm a freelance web designer, not an employee here. Thanks to the U.S. economy, I have a lot of time to help people out here, so I do. I'm an end user like you, only I have several years of software development and troubleshooting experience. I don't particularly enjoy answering the "why did they install (insert bundled software name here) on my system?" questions. Usually there's no convincing the original poster and subsequent posters that there IS a way around it. Most of them want their computers and ALL software companies to do everything for them, and do it without ever inconveniencing them with knowing it was done, and THEN they complain when something IS installed without their explicit approval. That's a hard case to argue.
Maybe (I'm not holding my breath) enough complaints like yours will eventually persuade Adobe to NOT install bundled apps with updates, and no way to say no to it. Meantime, I do things the long way because I have to, to keep my systems running like I want them

  • Win 7 64bit hangs on latest Flash Player Update

    Win 7 64bit hangs on the latest Flash Player Update. It happened twice yesterday, after I installed the latest (automatic) Flash Player Update. After I uninstalled that Update, my system was stable again. Now I lack Flash Player, but at least I have a stable system.

    Hi Chris,
    Thanks very much for the fast response. I have tried installing the 11.3 beta update onto a local PC, and this does seem to resolve the issue.
    And now the inevitable question...
    When is 11.3 likely to get rolled out?
    No doubt this is a tricky question for you to answer - but roughly, is this days/weeks/months away. I just could do with a vague idea, as we can cope with it for a day or two, but otherwise I'm going to need to come up with an alternative. My whole business is based around online video in one form or another - and everyone with the latest update can no longer use it - hence big problem for us.
    Many Thanks

  • Latest flash player update 11.2.202.229 causing player for forcefully buffer full video content.

    Hi,
    Been using the flash player for years on various websites, and over the past few days hundreds of videos have stopped working - seemingly related to computers / browsers with the latest flash player update.
    Video just won't play at all - instead of playing, it starts to buffer the whole video file, but mostly never manages to complete and play.
    Am I alone here - or is this a wider issue?
    Here is just one example video that will not play with the latest version - http://www.vintra.co.uk/Client-Script-Libraries/Thurleigh_Investment_Management_Q1_Preview _1.htm

  • OS X Yosemite - latest flash player update stops at 25% or 30%

    OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.2
    safari Version 8.0.3
    Flash player version 16.0.0.296
    Have been getting notifications to update my flash player, and when I go onto the adobe site I am able to download the latest file and it runs fine, however it always stops on 25% or 30% and won't go any further, I have left it for several hours and then cleared and re downloaded at least 20 times now but it still won't go any further. Does anybody know a way to solve the problem??

  • How to uninstall the latest Flash player update

    After I installed the latest Adobe Flash update, I am getting nasty messages when running flash embedded applications from Ms Office:
    "this document contains embedded content that may be harmful to your computer"
    I tried to enable All Active-X and all Macros without notification in the Office Trust settings, but it dod.t help.
    How can i uninstall the latest Flash update and revert to the previous version?
    Thanks!

    I've fixed the issue applying the following steps:
    1. Uninstalled Flash player with the Adobe uninstall utility.
    2. Downloaded and installed the version 11.4 from the Flash archive here.
    It seems that the 11.5 works fine as well. Actually, Adobe should fix the issue asap, because it will effectively ruin hundreds of office applications using flash.
    Here is the thing. I should launch a standalone application from MS Excel. That application incorporates 30+ flash charts. To pass the Adobe warning message I need to click "Accept" 30 times which is insane. I don't see any other ways of disabling it, because even allowing all macros and active-x in the Excel trust center doesn't help.
    Anyway, this Adobe "innovation" doesn't look right at all. I do hope someone from Adobe development team will see this and address the issue. Otherwise people will have stick to old versions and never update Flash.

  • SWFobject does not work with the latest flash player update in IE

    So I get an installer show up this morning for the new flash
    player after installation and testing of my site. It appears
    SWFobject is not working in IE anymore. But it still works fine in
    everything else.
    What the hell is going on!?

    He is right. I am a Web designer and after a windows update
    tonight all pages using swfobject stopped working unless I add the

    even rendered a major site like www.fox.com unusable in IE7.

  • No Audio after latest Flash Player Update

    My System is windows 7 Home premium 32bit. After i downloaded the latest update I do no longer have sound in internet explorer 9 AND google chrome.
    wmp still works.Downloaded all the latest drivers, I have tried everything that was suggested here:
    http://www.codecguide.com/fix_for_flash_sound_problems.htm
    also no inflicting tools.
    At the directory System32/macromed/flash there is:
    the map FlashplayerTrust
    Flash10q.ocx
    Flash10r.ocx
    FlashInstall.log
    FlashUtil10q_ActiveX.dll and .exe
    FlashUtil10r_ActiveX.dll and .exe
    I guess there's something wrong with the registers but I really tried everything that is suggested in relation to that matter.

    C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
    Flash10r.ocx
    FlashInstall.log
    FlashUtil10r_ActiveX.dll and .exe
    Still no sound
    I've also noticed that in Sound mixer, the option to control the sound of internetaplications is gone. So maybe it's just that simple that it's on mute but i can Neither see nor change this setting.
    In my search to fix this I've seen a lot of posts from people with similar problems but they never got a solution.

  • After installing latest flash player update my screen display is rotated 90 degrees: how do I fix that?

    as oon as flash player installed my whole screen display went side ways.

    This will probably not have been caused by Adobe Flash. Many graphics drivers have the option to rotate the display, some have a keyboard shortcut to do this and you may have accidentally used the keyboard shortcut.
    Try right-clicking on the desktop, there is often an option to access settings for your graphics card. You can then check the setting to see if there is a feature for rotating the display.

  • How can I lodge a complaint about Adobe Flash Player?

    How can I lodge a complaint about Adobe Flash Player? When I updated Adobe Flash Player this morning it also installed a McAfee scanning software without any warning or notification. I find this totally unacceptable. But I cannot find any information on the Adobe website that will allow me to lodge my complaint. Which I also find totally unacceptable.
    Ho hum.

    This is a an old complaint. I would have thoughtas much bad karma as Adobe has received would have stopped this practice espcially since it found that many time McAfeee either gets protection signatures wrong or cause more problems than it fixes.
    I don't know whether mailto:[email protected] is still effective.
    At one time a disgruntled Adobe products user created a FaceBook or twitter page. And many in past have claimed when there complaints got ignored or laughed at by Adobe. They suddenly got action whe airring their complaint on this FaceBook or Twitter page.

  • Just reinstalled newest iTunes and still the program fails to open.  Am using Windows 7 starter.  It seems that the failure to open iTunes happened just after I updated to the latest flash player.  Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

    iTunes will not open.  I am using Windows 7, and have had no trouble with iTunes until yesterday.  The only think I did yesterday was install an upgrade to the latest Flash player.  From then on, even after deleting and reinstalling iTunes, it still does NOTHING after the screen authorizing iTunes to make changes to the hard drive.  I have tried going to the applications and ending process.  I've also tried going to Control panel - and tried to repair the program.
    If I don't get some help here... iTunes is toast to me.
    Thanks,
    GaryFromSeffner

  • Latest Flash Player does not recognise an Old Script

    Hi, here's hoping this is in the right Forum. Some time ago I added an excellent Flash widget to a page -  recently I went back to the widget code to add it to a new page, unfortunately now, the element displays in the page as an error message - "You have an old version of Flash Player. Please visit adobe.com and get a new one". I tried in vain to reinstall the latest version of Flash to no avail - it was already installed, as I suspected. Then I remembered that the code was old, so I began to backgrade my Flashplayer - bingo! The excellent 'Facehugger' (form the Alien series of films) appeared. Only now I had an old version of Flash on my pc and nothing else would load. hhhmmmm dilemma, every other Flash I tried to load would require the latest Flash player EXCEPT my beloved Facehugger. So, my question is, are there any Flash code experts out there who would be able to take a look at the widget code and make it compatible with Flash 10+?
    heres the code:- <script type="text/javascript">
    AC_FL_RunContent( 'height','528','width','385','allowscriptaccess','never','allownetwor king','internal','src','http://www.avp-r.com/EN/widgets/facehugger.php?api=html','wmode','tran sparent','menu','false','quality','best','scale','noscale','movie','ht tp://www.avp-r.com/EN/widgets/facehugger.php?api=html' ); //end AC code
    </script><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" height="528" width="385">
    <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="never" />
    <param name="allowNetworking" value="internal" />
    <param name="movie" value="http://www.avp-r.com/EN/widgets/facehugger.swf.php?api=html" />
    <param name="wmode" value="transparent" />
    <param name="menu" value="false" />
    <param name="quality" value="best" />
    <param name="scale" value="noscale" />
    <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="never" allowNetworking="internal" src="http://www.avp-r.com/EN/widgets/facehugger.swf.php?api=html" height="528" width="385" wmode="transparent" menu="false" quality="best" scale="noscale" />
    </object></noscript>

    i think the problem is with your html code rather than the swf itself.
    there is now a better way of embedding swfs called SWFObject. Theres a tutorial here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/swfobject.html and an online code generator here: http://www.bobbyvandersluis.com/swfobject/generator/index.html

  • Latest flash player, wmode GPU still not working in Safari

    Hi
    I have the latest flash player installed, (10.2.153.1) but when i use the parameter
    wmode=gpu
    in safari, nothing is displayed AT ALL. When right-clicking on the page, you only get the standard html options.
    When I remove the 'wmode' parameter, everything works fine.
    I have the latest version of safari. Everything works fine in other browsers (firefox, chrome).
    any ideas anyone???
    thanks!

    Sometimes it is just a trial and error.  The main thing is since I'm not working with your files, I have to mimic your scenario as best I can.  Make sure you give it exact positions when stacking actual videos or swf files to force them to overlap.  I tested this first with just a swf file and now the example is swapped to stack to youtube embeds as examples.
    It really shouldn't matter if it is a dropdown or what type of activity, as long as you have the stacking correct.  You can also, generally set the one in back to opaque. I updated the code snippet because this one seemed to read better.
