I wish to restore my iPhone4

When I try to restore my Iphone 4 (5.0.1), iTunes puts the downloadung of OS 5.01 in the way.
I could go through that again but it takes 15 hours on my connection and usually ends up with a connection time out just before completion.
Why would iTunes offer this when already downloaded since first coming out.
Please is there a way round this-I tried cancelling the download process but this just stops the restore.

I followed link and tried to download the update. It was to take 15 hours, that is overnight. This morning there is an icon on my desktop resembling a cube showing a musical note on one side. It will not open.
Checking for software update on my iPhone results in response 'your software is up to date'.
I wondered why Apple have not released this update via iTunes.
Will I be forever unable to reset my iPhone?

No iTunes content is included in any iPhone backup. If the playlists are not in your iTunes library, on your computer, they are gone.

Only if you have a more recent backup with which to restore from - if you've only got the one from 3 months ago then you will be limited to what was on that.

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

I have tried all the steps in the apple support.

There is nothing to backup.
If the device is showing the Connect to iTunes screen, there is nothing on the device to backup.
The first step in the update process is a backup... restore the device using that backup and try again.

no, you cannot. However, the SIM doesn't need to be active. An old deactivated SIM from the carrier to which the phone is locked (if the phone is locked) will do.

If it says wrong password, evidently what you're typing isn't it. Remember it is CaSe SenSiTiVe, a zero is not an Oh, a one is not the letter l and spaces count.
And make sure you're typing in the same language keyboard it was originally typed in.
