Only AT&T can unlock a phone locked to them, and they will do so only for people who are or have been customers of theirs.
I'd strongly suggest you buy your iPhone in India, if that's where you live. You would get no support from Apple in India for any iPhone purchased outside of your country.

AT&T "low cost" options are for ATT subsidized phones. Those require a two year contract commitment and are only available in the USA and those phones are locked to ATT. You can get them unlocked only once you meet the contract commitments. Such a phone would not be available for sale to you (as the contract requires USA payment and billing) and would be useless to you in India.

Hi, I am working in saudi arabia and willing to buy an iphone 5. But next year I will shift to India permanently. So my query is whether I would purchase apple applications from India or not once I left the purchased country of origin?
Also here though face time is banned by law, one of the biggest authorized dealer (Jarir bookstore) of apple products sells unloced iphone/ipad versions with face time enabled. So shall I use this function out side of saudi arabia, i.e. in India?Wait and purchase the whole phone from India if you are going to be permanently based there. #1: An AT&T phone is locked to AT&T. You can't use it in India unless you get it unlocked by AT&T.
#2: The 16GB iPhone 4S is discontinued. You can not buy one, for any carrier, from any legitimate source.
#3: Any phone sold in another country will not be eligible for in or out of warranty service from any authorized service provider outside the country where it was sold. The EU is considered a single country, but since you don't live in an EU member nation, that's irrelevant to you. -

Update: I reset my phone again and this time I restored it from my last iCloud backup. That "sort of" worked. (The missing info was on my phone temporarily, but it's still missing from iCloud.com and as the phone syncs with the cloud the missing contacts are disappearing.)

yes you can do it and not void the warranty. Those are the only hardware changes that Apple permits. Instructions on how to upgrade the ram and remove and replace the hard drive are even included in the owners manuals for MacBook Pros.

If you wanted FaceTime, you should not have purchased your phone in the UAE. There is no way to add it back to your phone, as it has been permanently removed.

If you purchase an unlocked iPhone in the US, you certainly can use it in France. Not a very smart idea, however, because it's not guaranteed to support the LTE bands in Europe, and if there's a problem with the phone, you will have to either bring the phone back to the US yourself, or send it to someone you know in the US to bring it in to Apple for evaluation. The iPhone warranty is NOT international.
You cannot refund or exchange a US iPhone in a French Apple Store.
You will be doing yourself a big favor to purchase your phone in France. -

That's because her phone is recognized in the Apple database as an iPhone. It should eventually convert to SMS but that's above my level of expertise here so hopefully someone else can come along and help you further. She could just turn on iMessage and solve the problem. Ha!
