I won't install Photos until Apple brings "Places" back.

This is not an upgrade if I have to lose one of my favorite features.   I think it's great if Apple wants to offer new features but I should not have to uninstall iPhotos (and lose places) if Photos does not have this feature.
Be careful.  Do not upgrade if you don't want to lose this feature.  I almost did.

You don't have to uninstall iPhoto, if you want to explore Photos. I am still using mainly Aperture and iPhoto on my main photo libraries, while using Photos to share a small library to iCloud Photo Library.  All work well together.
But you are right, the ability to geotag photos and manage Places is a "must have" for Photos.  The "Moments" view is not very useful, if the Moments are only separated by time and not by location, because it is not possible to add locations.

  • 24" iMac won't install any 'large' Apple software updates from the internet

I am having a serious issue with my iMac and neither the people on the phone at Apple Care or the 'Geniuses' at the Genius Bar have been able to assist. So, maybe someone here can:
First - here is the background information about what happened and what I've done:
A few weeks ago when the new iTunes 10 came out I went to upgrade. The upgrade failed it said. So, I thought perhaps Apple was having issues with the new software or something. So, I thought - Ok, I'll give it a day or two.
I come back and try again from Apple.com - no luck. Hmmmm - well, I just happened to see my 'software update' icon pop up and there was iTunes. I thought "Great! Now I'm sure it'll install!" No luck.
So, I think - well, perhaps I've done something to corrupt my profile. So, I create a new profile and try again. No dice.
So now I'm really confused and figure - ok, let me try a partition and I'll try again. Still nothing.
Finally I figure - ok, something is wrong here. So, since nothing is working I backup my music and important files and wipe out the hard drive and start over. No luck. And, in fact - since I had gone back to 10.5.4 or whatever - software updates needed to install to get me back to 10.5.5. Those wouldn't install through software updates OR when downloaded from Apple.com - Smaller downloads like, flash, java, firefox, etc - all download and install without issue.
I decided to engage "Apple Care" and they call me at the time I specified and we begin to do some tests on the hardware and everything came back ok. We tried from Apple.com and software updates again - still won't install the software. Keeps coming back with "Software installation failed" something about the package installer was corrupted during downloading.
The guy at Apple care thinks perhaps its my network corrupting something. This begins to make a little sense and I think, maybe he's right. My wireless router isn't that great so, maybe I'll just go replace it. However, while I'm checking out I begin to think that maybe its NOT my wireless router - because I do have 2 other computers in my house who haven't had issues downloading anything. So, this is unlikely. But, I didn't like the wireless router anyway - so I went ahead with the purchase.
I get it home - set it up and try again. STILL not working. So, I make an Appointment at the "Genius Bar". I take it in - show them the screen shots of the errors and we get started. They try to do the install of either iTunes or the combo update on THEIR network - still won't work. The genius thinks I have a bad HD and takes the computer for 2 days to look at it.
I finally get to go pick it up - excited that I'll have my iMac (which I use for work) back and functioning again. I go pick it up and they decided that it wasn't my hard drive - but likely my RAM. They couldn't prove it was the RAM but figured since I bought the RAM after I bought the iMac that this must be the issue (even though it was up to exact Apple standards and was from Crucial). So, I think - well, while I have a blank slate I'll go ahead and install Snow Leopard. So, I pick up Snow Leopard and get new RAM too and go home to install.
I get the computer home, put the new RAM in, install snow leopard and get ready to work! After snow leopard install is done - it has some new updates it needs to install. And the update FAILS to install again. Oh, and they never replaced the HD.
So, I call Apple Care again - they have no clue. They suggest making an Apple Genius Bar appointment. So, I take it in again. They run diagnostics on it from their 'Triage' external hard drive and everything checks out. He says its probably the hard drive (same conclusion they came to the first time) and said that they would replace it.
I get the computer back - take it home. Everything is up to date. All the software updates were back in place including iTunes 10. However, I still want to test and see if I can download iTunes and/or do updates. So, I uninstall iTunes and download it again. Same problem. STILL won't install any large software downloads. But, again - Smaller downloads like, flash, java, firefox, etc - all download and install without issue. Just no core Apple updates or things like iTunes will download and install on my iMac.
I then took it to a friends house - set it up on his network - same issue.
    So to sum up:
I have re-imaged the hard drive several times
    I have replaced the ram
I have replaced my networking hardware (even though other machines on the network have no issues)
I have taken it in twice to the Genius Bar and they still haven't fixed it
The Problem followed the machine and exhibited the same issues in store as it did in my home (so we know the problems stays with the machine)
I have tried it on yet a 3rd network and the issue still exists
The people at the Genius Bar told me that If I still have issues then its with my network - even though its been proven it wasn't.
Its only larger downloads like Combo Updates and iTunes that won't install.
Any ideas? Sorry for the long post but its been quite an ordeal.

Yes, I have tried the updates directly from the Apple website and a different issue occurs. When I do that I get various different errors - the most common saying 'Codec overrun'. This has happened both before and after complete software OS reinstalls (Completely wiping the HD clean).
I did a video of my issue on my iPhone. I had to cut it and compress it to get it off my phone without syncing (because I can't sync it since I can't get iTunes installed now). So, its about a minute long if anyone wants to see it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8leWwEoIeXI
And yes, we tried to repair permissions a couple times but didn't seem to have any effect on whether it would install these updates. Again, it's NOT all software downloads/installs. It seems to be limited to LARGER pieces of software. Example: Firefox, Flash, Java and Silverlight have all downloaded and installed without error on my iMac. Apple combo updates and iTunes won't install at all.

  • Maverick won't install! And I have nothing backed up...help please!

I updated to Maverick but now it won't install. It says I have to repair discs but when I go to utilities and repair they won't repair. Now when I turn on my computer it goes directly to the install maverick screen and I can't do anything else. My computer is not backed up (stupid, I know). Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is there some way to backup my computer to an external HD at this point? Can I revert back to mountain lion? If I go back to factory settings do I lose everything? What should I do??

    Kelso,
If Eric's suggestion of Command+Q doesn't free you up, have you tried Force Quit? -- click and hold the black Apple icon in the far upper left corner -- Force Quit is SCARY powerful and I suggest it ONLY if you are all out of other options -- if FQ gives you the option to quit Install and other things, do so and when you reach a simple desktop or Finder window grab an external drive, plug it in, and backup your documents and non-App Store applications manually.
Then turn the machine off, have coffee or tea, and decide on your next course of action.
Final suggestion, when you do ultimately get back in order, get a Time Machine and use it. A 100GB external drive is less than $100....I suspect you may have already thought of this.
    Good Luck.

  • Can't load itunes on windows 7.  Received Apple update and something went wrong.  Now it won't install from the apple website at all

Apple sent an update to itunes program and it didn't complete installation correctly.  Now I can't load it and get a consistent error message and the iiPhone can't sync without itunes installed.  Anyone able to help with this?

Now I can't load it and get a consistent error message
What does the error message say? (Precise text, please.)

  • My MacBook won't install any new Apple applications

    Ok, I have a problem.
When I try to install anything from software update it doesn't work. I get messages like the following...
"The following install step failed: run preinstall script for JavaForMacOSX10.5Update4. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
"The following install step failed: run preflight script for iTunes. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
"The following install step failed: run preinstall script for iMovie_804. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
"The following install step failed: run preinstall script for iPhoto_804. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
I also can't install the update that gets "GarageBand Instruments and Apple Loops."
A couple months ago I was cleaning out non-essential files from my computer because I had less than 100 mbs of space left on my hard drive after a few hours of using the computer. I have an external hard drive so space isn't a problem now, but I think this may have caused the problem.
I tried repairing disk permissions and nothing happened.
I tried downloading the files from the apple support downloads and installing them but that didn't work.
I also tried reinstalling Mac OS X Leopard but that doesn't work either. When my computer restarts and boots up from the installation disk it asks me what language is primary and gives me the start of a loading bar (when it has blue diagonal stripes flowing across it) and then says "Mac OS cannot be installed on this disk." I tried turning off airport when I restart the computer and that didn't work.
The problem with this is that it means I can't do an archive and install, as far as I know.
    Please help me!

Well I fixed my computer. I downloaded the Combo update that was suggested but could not run it from the desktop. I found this suggestion on another thread in these discussions.
I downloaded the file onto another mac computer and shut my macbook down. I connected the two computers together with a firewire cable and started the macbook up in firewire target mode (start it up (or restart it) while holding the T key). Then I ran the combo update from the other computer and chose to install it to the macbook. Now I'm all fixed.

  • Poker Journal app won't install due to Apple bug in iOS8

I've been working with the developer of the fantastic app, Poker Journal, as it will not work / install on iOS8. Unfortunately it seems to be an Apple problem but Apple isn't offering much help. Along with the other users of this app I'd greatly appreciate if Apple would please get it to again work.

    Hi Royb,
first i excuse myself for my english...its not too bad but sometimes i make mistakes... however
perhaps you can help me with my problem as well. i did the log file as well and i suppose its something to do with the ipod functions in itunes. everywhere in the logfile where the pattern "2330" matches is something like this:
    MSI (c) (A0:08) [21:33:37:187]: Note: 1: 2330 2: 23 3: C:\Programme\iPod
    MSI (c) (A0:08) [21:33:37:187]: Transforming table Error.
DEBUG: Error 2330: Error getting file attributes: C:\Programme\iPod. GetLastError: 23
Bei der Installation dieses Pakets ist ein unerwarteter Fehler aufgetreten. Es liegt eventuell ein das Paket betreffendes Problem vor. Der Fehlercode ist 2330. Argumente: 23, C:\Programme\iPod,
    AppSearch: Eigenschaft: EXISTINGINSTALLDIR, Signatur: Locate_EXISTINGINSTALLDIR
    AppSearch: Eigenschaft: EXISTINGIPODINSTALLDIR, Signatur: Locate_EXISTINGIPODINSTALLDIR
in case the german language causes problems with the analysis i tried to translate it into proper english:
    MSI (c) (A0:08) [21:33:37:187]: Note: 1: 2330 2: 23 3: C:\Programme\iPod
    MSI (c) (A0:08) [21:33:37:187]: Transforming table Error.
DEBUG: Error 2330: Error getting file attributes: C:\Programme\iPod. GetLastError: 23
During the installation an error occured. Maybe there is a packet problem. The error code is 2330. Arguments: 23, C:\Programme\iPod,
    AppSearch: Attribute: EXISTINGINSTALLDIR, Signature: Locate_EXISTINGINSTALLDIR
    AppSearch: Attribute: EXISTINGIPODINSTALLDIR, Signature: Locate_EXISTINGIPODINSTALLDIR
    I hope this helps...
It would be very nice if you help me, otherwise i see no other way than formationg windows...and i hate that...thats why mac is better -.-
however plase help me and if it helps i can send u the hole logfile. =)
    thank alot!

mmchisholm - just so you know you're not alone, I too am having the exact same issue as of latest software update bundle. Have to manually add each photo until Apple issues solution or minor software update.

  • ITunes won't install on my OS 10.3. Will Tiger 10.4 run it?

My PowerMac G4 is running Panther 10.3.9. I have a 733 MHz processor. iTunes won't install nor can I view any videos. If I go to Youtube the system crashes. Some sites tell me I need a flashplayer upgrade, but it won't install. An Apple tech told me to upgrade to Leopard 10.5 and it would solve my problems. My understanding is that Leopard 10.5 needs 867MHz to run. If I upgrade to Tiger 10.4 will that solve any of my problems?

    Hello marwhi,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Yes, OS 10.3.9 cannot run the latest iTunes 9. You will need at least Mac OS 10.4.11 and above to run it. Your problem with YouTube may just be with your browser if you are using Safari. For now you might want to try Camino 1.6.9 and see if you have any better luck. Camino 1.6.9 tends to be a slightly more updated version of browser than the last version of Safari that runs on 10.3.9 Panther. If you do upgrade to Tiger 10.4.11 though you would be able to use a more updated version of Safari which will "play" nicer with sites such as YouTube and Google etc.
Hardware and software system requirements for iTunes 9 can be found at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
And here are the "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements". You will need to purchase a "full retail" version of Tiger 10.4 install discs from a third party reseller such as on ebay etc. and the discs tend to sell for a premium these days. General idea of price can be seen by going to ebay and searching for "full retail 10.4 Tiger install" and then clicking on the "Completed Auctions" link in the left column. This should give your a good idea of what they tend to sell for on the resale market when available. Do not purchase machine specific or "upgrade" discs.

  • Java won't install please help

I was trying to reinstall java due to a problem with an application.
I uninstalled the old one, removed the old directory, rebooted, downloaded the offline java package jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe
and it won't install. I get 2 errors back to back.
I have tried installing to a custom directory, with no special characters, tried registering the files listed on another thread and nothing works.
This is on windows xp sp2 with ie 6.
Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows
Installer package. A program run as part of the setup
did not finish as expected. Contact your support
    personnel or package vendor.
lib\rt.jar: Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match.

I had the same problem today.
I got around the problem by:
    1 - uninstalling java 1.5.03
    2 - removing java 1.6 files
3 - downloading the same package
4 - installing in a custom directory (advanced options) (program_files/sunjava/...)

Hold c and reboot off the 10.6 disk, run the installer.
If the machine your upgrading is the 2006, I'd highly advise you stay on 10.6.8
It's a 5 year old machine, you're in the last life stages of that machine and 10.7 will push it right over the edge.
10.6 is a GOOD upgrade for that machine, faster than 10.7 or 10.5.
And 10.6 will run your 10.5 software, 10.7 will not.
Get iCloud with a new 10.8 machine coming out after this summer, seriously.
Your machine is too old to bother with Lion.
Or else you can learn yourself and use this link to get back to Snow, good luck finding your 10.5 programs.

Try quitting Pages on the iPad, restart the iPad -  and then see if the app works OK.
To quit Pages - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase harddisk and install Leopard Snow Leopard Mountain Lion. Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion won't install on 10.7.4. Suggestion from Apple is to completely erase the harddisk and install Leopard > Snow Leopard > Mountain Lion.
Is there no other way to install Mountain Lion?

I tried and failed for several hours to install Mountain Lion, and was repeatedly getting the "Recovery System" cannot be created error.  I tried all the tricks: resizing the drive partition, booting from an external boot drive, all to no avail.  After reading other users struggling with the same issue, I had determined it to be a boot camp drive error.  However, I didn't want to have to erase and begin anew when I came upon a possible solution.  I had long ago renamed my boot camp drive with a "." (".windows" for me) in order to avoid having the partition show up on my desktop.  So, I boot into windows and renamed the c: drive without the "." ("windows"), and reboot into os x.  The install then went off without a hitch.  I hope this will be helpful for others struggling with this issue that may have renamed their boot camp drives in a similar manner.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
