I would like to add a solid state drive to my 27" iMac i7 (Jul 2010). Can this be done?

Good day all
I would like to add a solid state drive to my imac 27" which currently has 1TB drive.  I know that you can by the imac with a ssd and an hdd but can a dealer install a ssd after the fact?

I did there are no videos for installing a HD in a late model iMac on OWC's website that I could find. Once again, can you provide the URL on OWC's website that shows instructions on how to install?
Also it will NOT be the same process because SSD's are 2.5" devices and the internal HD's in a iMac are 3.5" devices. Therefore either an adapter or some type of bracket must be used. Apple does NOT include the bracket on non-SSD equiped iMacs so it's up to the shop or user to source one.

  • I would like to add my Deskjet F4480 printer to my home wireless network. How can this done?

I have a Linksys wireless router that is the hub of my home wireless network.  I have been successful in adding a HP OfficeJet 6500 All-in-one Printer an old HP DeskJet 890C that I purchased in 1997 with a computer running Windows 95.  The HP 890C has been my tireless workhorse throughout my two kids K-12 school as well as printing reams of paper during my MBA...and guess what: it still works.  However, my daughter has just returned home from college and she has a HP DeskJet F4480 printer/scanner that she would like to add it to the home network.  I have been researching the problem, but haven't been successful in finding out if this printer is compatible to add to a wireless network.  Or simply, will a 802.11g Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter suffice?  I am also adding a new Windows 7 laptop in the network, that will need to print to this F4480.  I patiently await the forum's response.

My mistake, it seems that price was a deciding factor when I purchased the F4480 in lieu of a more expensive wireless ready printer-scanner.  I will eventually come-up with a solution as I did with the 890C where I have a wireless print server connected directly to the printer serial connection.  It seems that backward compatible is still evident, but I am having some problems coming up with the long-lasting HP49 and HP23 tri-color ink packs.
Here is the rub; I don't replace technology because it is out-dated. I upgrade and or repair everything myself. I found warranties not worth the paper their written on and in most cases, the technical support was lacking.  My Win95 desktop went thru several major components until I found that it was becoming harder to find software to run with it.  I finally replaced it in 2007.  Now it seems that there has been a paradigm shift toward utilities that are very hungry for memory, and even if I didn't want to, I am forced to come over to the dark side with a device that has a minimum of 8GB of RAM.

  • I would like to add a new card date field to my address Book Contacts. Is this possible? Thanks, Jeff

    Hi,
I would like to add a new card date field to my Address Book Contacts. Is there any way to do this? I have a lot of contacts and it helps me remember who I talked to, if I had a new card date field in my contacts.
    Thank you,
    Jeff

    Hi,
I found the applescript below from Michael Bach that works well.
(* Find recently modified entries in the Address Book
Input: a time interval (backwards from today) in the variable "daysBeforeToday"
Output: a string on the clipboard, format: YYYY-MM-DD (tab) Name (return)
    ©2009, Michael Bach, <www.michaelbach.de> *)
set daysBeforeToday to 7 -- <<<  change as desired or read from a dialog
    tell application "Address Book"
      copy (current date) - daysBeforeToday * 24 * minutes * 60 to referenceDate
copy (every person whose (modification date > referenceDate)) to modifiedPersons
      set s to ""
      repeat with aPerson in modifiedPersons
set d to ((modification date) of aPerson) -- now change to international format and forget the hours
        set dateString to (year of d as string) & "-" & (my twoDigits((month of d) as number)) & "-" & (my twoDigits(day of d) as string)
        set s to s & dateString & tab & (name of aPerson) & return
      end repeat
set the clipboard to s --for pasting into other applications
s -- to view immediately in the script editor
    end tell
on twoDigits(aNumber) -- trivial utility for formatting
if aNumber < 10 then return "0" & (aNumber as string)
      return (aNumber as string)
    end twoDigits
I changed the modification date to creation date.
    Thanks for the replies.

  • Add a solid state drive

    Hello Anyone
I have been targetted as one of the macs which needs to have its HDD replaced due to a possible fault. While I have to re-install all my software again etc etc, I was considering adding a solid state drive to the internals and insall the OS on there instead of the spinning disk.
Can anyone advice me if I can do this with my model? I read that some models allow it, but others don't.
My model is the 27-inch, Late 2009
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance
    Al

any ssd will work, the mac you have is running on SATA II so unless you have a possible future use for the SSD after you scrap your mac there is really no reason to go with an expensive SSD. Also, a 7200 RPM seagate barracuda will give you 180mb/s on sequential.
if you want a high performance SSD get either a Samsung 840 Pro or a OCZ Vertex 4.
if you want to save money and still get a ssd get an Adata SX900 or a OCZ Agility 4.
OWC uses a box standard Sandforce II controller (same as the Adata) but is overpriced, and they dont work any better with a mac.

  • MacPro1.1 with 3 internal hard drives, 2 with snow leopard OS & 1 with Lion OS, I have some software that will only run on OS 10.4.11, and I would like to add a 4th drive and format it to 10.4.11, can this be done aon this platform?

    Hello,
I would like to load the 4th bay in my mac with a 2TB HDD and format it with the old system 4.11 will I have any problems?

Since it's a MacPro1,1, it originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.4.7 and will run Mac OS X 10.4.11 when installed from its original disks(or the Mac OS X Server 10.4 Universal Binary) and updated.

  • Can i add a solid state drive to my late 2006 macbook

Got a dumb amateur question. I have a 120g hard drive in my late 2006 macbook and two 2 one gig memory cards upgraded from apple when purchased. Can i upgrade to a SSD and more memory on this mac? Can it be done on a amateur level. Is it worth it?

You should be able to upgrade the memory to as much as 3GB by installing
one 2-GB RAM, and one 1-GB RAM for that grand total combined amount.
If your computer is really a MacBook Pro model, the numbers will vary.
This is a little bit more than the 2GB total officially recognized; some users
had installed two 2-GB RAM chips, but seldom evidence the extra 1GB.
•MacBook: How to remove or install memory - Apple Support
A place to check on slower style SSD upgrade parts for older Macs may be
OWC macsales.com, as they have some that are about the data rate of
the older early MacBook computers. Faster ones would be a waste, though
some are backward compatible to slow computer data transfer rates.
Also check the OWC for memory. They have RAM based on the correct identify
of the computer in question and have a good reputation among Apple users.
There are instructions in their site (free/video) on how to install an SSD. To use
an external HD enclosure is a suggested method to get the SSD ready, prior to
attempt to install; then it can be less troublesome. Back up your original HDD
and system content. If desired, you may be able to use a clone or disk image.
The iFixit.com repair guides (specific to various models) can be a helpful way
to look into steps on how to replace and upgrade Mac computers. They're free.

  • Which solid state drives are compatible with iMac 7 27 inch late 2009?

I am interested in installing an SSD (120 to 250gb) for the start up drive and run the system and apps that are disk drive intensive like databases.  My goal is to speed up my iMac 7, and of course, minimum investment necessary.
I searched online and find lots of material at OWC, Crucial and iFix it but have found conflicting opinions and even success in the upgrade.  So my questions are:
    1) Can an SSD be installed in my iMac?  iMac 7 late 2009, 2.8Ghz 27", model 11,1, 16GB RAM
        a) as an internal hard drive in addition to the factory installed?
        b) as an internal hard drive in replacement of the factory installed?
        c) as an external USB drive?
    2) What type of SSDs are compatible?
    3) Assuming that 1 and 2 are positive, what are the most critical things that I should keep in mind when transferring OS X and the boot drive location from the current drive to the SSD?
Any guidance, no matter how partial is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I put an OWC SSD drive in my late 2009 21.5" iMac. Note that your model computer has a link speed limit to 3G, so putting a 6 G will not give you more than 3G link speed. Furthermore, putting a 6G SSD in this model might also throttle down the actual speed to 1.5G. Not sure about other model drives, but that is noted in the fine print at OWC. Read the compatibility issues for your model computer, especially about the link speed issue
There is also the issue of the temp sensor which is located internally on the hard drive for this model and later. So you will have to make special adaptations to install any drive other than direct same type compatilbe replacements in the main bay. OWC also sells an adapter sensor cable for this, but I think it cost around $45.
One thing that drove me to OWC was the fact that they do not recommend using TRIM with their drives. That is a debatable issue about using TRIM with other drives, so if you go with another brand, you might want to research that topic before choosing another brand other than OWC. Many have stated no problem without using TRIM enabler software using some of the other brands like Samsung SSD drives.
What I did is left the internal drive in the main drive bay and installed an OWC SSD in the optical bay using the data doubler adapter. This has worked out great for me and I use the main drive as a backup drive. There are several sizes available in the 3G model. I chose the 240gig.
The whole kit with the data doubler is in the link here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DDIMSSD240/
Not saying you will get blazing performance with this like 6G compatible speeds would give, but as I said, your computer hardware is limited. But your sustained Read/Write speeds will basically double, and the Random Read/Write will go up tremendously.
You will definitely be pleased with the performance increase.
Once I installed the drive, I just used Disk Utility to format the SSD drive and then restored the whole internal drive to the SSD drive. Everything copied including the recovery partition to the new drive. Once the restore was done, just changed startup disk and booted into the SSD. Was very simple.

  • I have downloaded a tv show on itunes but would like to send to a flash drive to watch on my tv. What can I do?

I have downloaded a TV in iTunes. I would like to convert to a flashdrive which will enable me to view on my TV. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you

Copy the file from the computer to the flash drive, this has nothing to do with iTunes.
Just be aware that this may not work due to DRM.

  • HT3702 I am currently being billed a monthly charge from iTunes for Pandora ($3.99) but would like to switch to the annual billing rate of $36. Does anyone know how this is done?  Thanks for your help.

I am currently being billed a monthly charge from iTunes for my Pandora subscription ($3.99/mo) but would like to change to the annual rate offered by Pandora which is $36.  I don't see where that change can be made through the iTunes Store.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • I would like to add an arrow to my iMovie project to highlight a basketball player, is this possible?

I am making a basketball highlight tape for my son and am wondering if you can add an arrow to a video clip in iMovie?  I have downloaded a number of clips from different games into the project library, have inserted transition titles, and I now want to highlight which player is my son in the series of clips.

... hm, hard to tell ...
as mentioned on my site, this a workaround, officially not supported.
(stumbled into that 'option' when noticing that the transparency of .png isn't changed)
    • you can apply only one arrow = pic-in-pic per clip.
    • on preview, iM often doesn't catch the trick, but on final export, it should work. without 'pause'.
    • you mentioned 'tape' - your source is miniDV? I tested that only with HDef material, .dv is internally handled different ... .maybe ... maybe this reasons the issues.
sorry, EM, of being of no better help - my last iM project is more than a year ago, after using iMovie for about 10y I made the plunge to the Big Boy's Toy FCPX and Motion5 ... I can there apply as much arrows, circles and highilghts, even 'taped' to movin' objects, as I like (=me soccer-Dad) ....

  • Inspiron 20 3000 can I add a solid state drive to boot for speed ?

I'm looking to purchase an inspiron 20 3000. I asked sales if I could get it configured with an SSD drive, and they said no. I'd have to purchase it and then the drive myself. But on Dell's web site I don't see any SSD drives, or hybrids listed as compatible.
Anybody know if this is possible ?
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Hi ekratz,
The system uses normal 2.5 inch mechanical hard drive with hard drive bracket (hard drive case) as the system can be used for SATA III technology hard drives the system should accept SSD drive but Dell has not tested this system with SSD.
