I agree with that too. However I believe that's a simple and useful function that such a powerful device like iPhone could have. Unfortunately the carriers in my coutry are champions of complaints and we always try to avoid call centers or going to a store due to the bad service. ONLY the carrier to which it is locked can unlock it. Contact that carrier and ask if they offer this service and if you qualify.

The warranty is irrelevant. As with any warranty on any product, damage is not covered.

There is no such thing as an "unlock code" for an iPhone. Contact the carrier the phone is locked to and find out what their policy is for unlocking. The SIM slot on the Verizon iPhone 5 is already unlocked.
Sprint will only unlock the SIM slot for international use for current Sprint customers in good standing.
AT&T will unlock iPhones purchased as no-commitment phones with proof of purchase from Apple or AT&T or for customers who have completed their contract or paid the early termination fee.
T-Mobile phones are already unlocked.
The other US carriers do not offer unlocking for iPhones.
