I would like to condense my iPhoto library

Dear forum,
I am starting to be really disappointed about the unstable software upgrades in iPhoto.  Iphoto is continuously crashing in my Mac and this is really annoying. Tested so far all the various proposals I could find in various forums but nothing seems to work in a consistent way. My iMac is 7 years old and I have been told there is only a way.  Buy a new iMac and everything will work.
I would like to give last chance to Apple so I am going to buy the new iMac.  But  I have a 35Gb iPhoto library  that is used only for creating projects and books.  Unfortunately it is not in one disk,  being splitted in three HDs (the internal one and two external ones).  I know this is wrong but unfortunately I can't go back.
I do not use Apple products to manage my photo archives (about 700 Gb).  I use iPhoto only for making books.  I have about 35 books and various other projects I do not want to loose moving to the new iMac.  But with the current version of iPhoto there is no chance to condense the library in one HD keeping my books  (unbelievable that this possibility is not existing!).  I have also iPhoto Library Manager,  duplicated the library in one single library but as you all know it does not keep the books and projects.
So if I want to keep my books in my new Mac I should keep my external drives!
I can't believe this is the situation and would appreciate indeed if someone could help.  I have tried with all the possible Genius support and it looks this is not possible.
It simply means that to solve software problems I need to buy the new iMac.  If I buy it I will loose my books and projects unless I keep the old external HD.
I would really appreciate some suggestion.
Thanks
Luca

This is not possible - an iPhoto library can not be split in any way - it is a single entity and can not be split up - do you have several iPhoto libraries each independent of the other?

Guessing that you have several iPhoto libraries there is no real reason to consolidate them - just move each of them (each will need a different name) to an archive folder in your pictures folder - switch between them by depressing the option key and launching iPhoto or using IPLM
Also with a new Mac and Aperture you can consolidate libraries - not sure if Aperture consolidates books but suspect it will - however given the way you use iPhoto I see no reason to consolidate

It would be better if you could connect the two Macs via a hard wired LAN to copy the library from the Mac Pro to the MacBook.  Wireless connections can have momentary dropouts which could affect the reliable copying of files.
If you do go with Air Drop be sure to open and inspect the copied library closely to confirm it was a successulf copy.

But I must point out that leaving the iPhoto Library on the external is worth considering. Your internal drive would be better off without having to carry the photos.
When you booted with the external connected and you were asked for the library, did you try navigating to the Library in on the external drive?

You should have no problems. To add a second computer or device to iTunes Match, see:

You might consider restoring to factory specs, as detailed in the booklet that shipped witht the machine, using the Setup Assistant on first boot, and then reinstalling those new programs. i've not moved pictures, so you could always give that a shot.

  • HT1296 I would like to transfer my music library, including playlists, from my old iphone to my new one.  But  I can't figure out how!

I would like to transfer my music library, including playlists, from my old iphone to my new iphone.

Connect the new phone to the computer and iTunes, then sync your library. I'm guessing that you have been syncing the old phone in the past, which would keep your library updated.

  • Re-Installing Windows and Would Like to Keep Playlists and Library

    Hi There.
I have a large collection of music which I have recorded from Vinyls, converted and then put into various playlists in my iTunes library (a very time consuming activity I would rather not repeat).
My PC is absolutely buggered and I need to re-install windows, however I do not want to lose all the playlists I have created with the music. Preferrably I would like to be able to drag folders/files into a folder on my external to then drag back after the reinstall is done. The question I have is what files do I need to transfer?
It would be much appreciated if anyone could advise me what files I need to transfer to my external hard drive (to then transfer back onto the PC after re-installing windows). Note that I have a small number of songs in the Downloads Folder, as opposed to in the itunes folder.
    Thanks Very Much

See the user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy for a suggested backup strategy.
If you copy out all of your data you will be able to restore it when needed. However it would be better to consolidate the library first as this makes the library portable, meaning you can restore it to any path. Otherwise unconsolidated data (anything outside the media folder) such as that in your downloads folder will need to be restored to exactly the same paths. This is also true if the media folder isn't a direct subfolder of your iTunes library folder.
Ideally you would clone the consolidated library to an external drive, and test that it works, by shift-starting iTunes and chooseing the copy of the library on the external drive, then deauthorize the computer before reinstalling Windows. Use the same tool to copy the library back and then periodically refresh your back up in future.

  • I would like refund/return of iPhoto 2011

I just purshased iPhoto 2011 form Mac App Store today, and I would like to return it and get a refund.
The reason for return is after using iPhoto 2011 i determined it only provides me limited photo editing functionality, and hence i would like to get refund on it and instead purshase Aperture.
    thx! Otmane

Contact Apple and see if you can get a refund.  I'm sure you'll be able to if you tell them your plans on purchasing Aperture.

  • I would like to copy my iphoto events library to my external hard drive as events not just thousands of individual photos. :)

Basically when I try to highlight events in iphoto and drag them to my external drive it takes them out of their events and puts them into the external hard drive as individual photos. This is way too unorganized for my liking and it would take me days to get them all sorted again. Isn't there a way to have them just go right to the external drive in their defined events?
    thanks

If using iPhoto 11 then you can do this with the File -> Export command:
    File -> Export
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
If using an earlier version then create a folder and export to it.
THat said, dragging and sropping only gets the Preview of your photos and that is not the best quality possible. The Export route has more options.

  • What I would like to see in Iphoto

I am not sure if this has been brought up, but I have a simple thing I would love to see happen in Iphoto. When it comes Iphoto's automatic organization of photos into directories on the hard drive, I would love it if I could define when I start a day. for instance, I am at a party, and it goes to 3am, well the files are located under two different folders, 01/21 and 01/22. I would much rather have the "day" start at 6am, or 8am (rarely does a party last that long now that I am older), this way when I upload my pictures to a web server, or drag the folder onto a cd-rom for a friend and I do not have to merge folders (I struggle with this problem on a dialy basis). Is there a way I can adjust this currently?

This might work..if you know in advance you'll be going past midnight, you could change the setting the clock in your camera so that it is several hours earlier, just like you change your watch when you have go to a different time zone. Easy to test it in advance.
(Then you have to remember to reset to the correct time, for your next shoot. )

  • I would like the share an iTunes library between two different accounts on one Mac. How do I do this?

iTunes no longer works properly (aka at all) while using one of the user accounts set up on my iMac. It does, however, work when logging in under another user account on the same iMac. (if any of you can help me solve this issue that would be perfect). If there is no solution can anyone help with my request to share an iTunes library between two different accounts on one Mac. How do I do this?

that works for anything he purchases after he creates the new account.  What about his current music that currently resides in my itunes library?  How can I get his current music out of my library into his new account/library??  Thanks..
Copy it to his computer into his iTunes library and authorize his computer with the iTunes account used to purchase them..
You cannot tranfser items from one iTunes account to another. Purchased items remain part of the iTunes account is was purchased with.
iTunes account - used to purchase items
iTunes library - where purchases (and CD RIPs) go on the computer

  • I have a new ipod that I would like to share my itunes library with. Is this possible?

Can someone help me and give me an idea as to whether or not is possible to have multiple Ipods and a shuffle share the same Itunes library on the same computer.  I attempted to drag the music on my itunes to another IPOD and it will not allow it.  Please help.  Thank you.

Just plug the iPod in and open iTunes. It will the iPod will show in the devices section of the iTunes sidebar. Click on the iPod go to the summary tab and set you syncing options. You can do this for as many iPods/iPhones/iPads as you like.

  • I am a first-time mac user.  I recently purchased the MacBook Air.  My previous computer was an HP laptop, but I would like to move my iTunes library from the hp to the MacBook Air.  How do I do this?

I don't know how to transfer my itunes library from one computer to another. Please help!

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
