I would like to give my old iPhone to a friend who would be on a different carrier, is this possible?
I have recently upgraded to the iPhone 6 and would like to give my old iPhone 4S to a friend in Argentina. Can i do this, if so how? Would his carrier just put their SD card in the side?
It's very unlikely. Here are at least some of the conditions you would have to satisfy.
Ask the original iPhone 4S' cellular carrier if they will unlock the iPhone. If their answer is "no", you are finished and cannot proceed.
If the original carrier would unlock the iPhone, you would have to do this before passing it to your friend.
Check Settings > Genreal > About > Model and record the model number you see.
Ask your friend to contact their cellular carrier to find out if they support that particular model.

Just turning off Cloud will not prevent him from turning it back on.
Rignt now, if he uses the App store, iTunes thinks it's talking to me.First, turn off iMessage, FaceTime & delete the iCloud account, while your sim is still in the phone. Then: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. Give it to your grandson & he gat then set it up as he wants.
Important your turn iMessage & FaceTime off to disassociate the phone from your Apple ID. Apple "claims" to have fixed this with iOS 6.0, but until I can absolutely confirm such, I still recommend you turn all of that stuff off first. -
Hi - I need help. I would like to use my old iPhone 3 as an iPod for music only. Problem is that my phone is locked with a password I can't remember. I havent used the phone since I got my iPhone 4. Thanks for your prompt response, however I have first seen it now. I have placed an active SIM card in the iPhone turned it off and on. It now says SIM locked, please write access code. The problem is I don't remember the password. When I connect it to iTunes it tell me that I have to write the password before it can be used with iTunes...... Do you have any good ideas? To effectively transfer ownership of the iPhone requires that it be "restored" as a new device.

The iPhone is not a backup device. Your computer backs up the iPhone, not the other way around. What you use to back up your computer is up to you - Macs use Time Machine. I assume PCs use something similar.
If her PC backup is dead you will have difficulty extracting content from the iPhone since it is not designed to work that way.
All her Apple purchases can easily be transferred to another iPhone. However, her contacts will be gone, as will any music or other contact obtained from sources other than Apple.

I think you answered your own question. As your friends phones are not iPhones, but maybe Nokia or Android the smiley will appear as a different character or box. Thew only way to fix this would be to send a basic smile using the basic keyboard so that your friends will receive it as a smile and you will when they reply. Or ask your friends to check if the phones they are using have the emoji type keyboard available and ask them to update their phones. This will show the smiley when they reply to you.

You can NOT do so. Only the owner of the account used to lock the phone can remove it. Instructions for how to do so can be found within or linked from within the document I already linked to.
Activation lock is an anti-theft feature designed to make the device useless to anyone other than the rightful owner.
If your friend refuses to give your money back and can not or will not remove the activation lock, there is a fair possibility that the phone was not theirs to sell in the first place. -

Once you have activated your new phone, you old phone won't have cellular data.
Then restore your old phone using itunes, then sync your music to it. -
I would like to have verizon unlock my old iphone 4s that I upgrade to a 5C. In the past, with some of my previous models, I called Verizon support and they unlocked the phone. Since I will be many months abroad, I would like to know how to be able to contact Verizon for this support.
