I would like to know what happened.

I put my 4s into airplane mode, and an hour later took it out of airplane mode. The phone went blank, like a brick. I tried reboot. I charged it for 2 hrs. tried reboot again and nothing. I took it to Verizon and they tried reboot and changing. Nothing! They told me to take it to Apple. BTW the SIM was removed because it was locked a few day earler. 6 hours later I showed it to a friend and he tried a reboot and got the battery to come up, close to completely dead. I put it on charge and in 2 hrs it charged completly. Now everything works. I am mistified. I have only had the phone for a week.

Screen protectors are for protection against scratches, not for protection against the iPod being dropped. As to the case, you may wish to take this issue up with the case manufacturer, though again, most claim protection only against scratches and mars, not against being dropped. Either way, such damage is not covered by the devices. warranty.
As to cost, Apple does not repair iPods, but will replace the entire iPod for a flat fee; see the Repair Pricing section here (as also mentioned by Limnos):

There are independent iPod repair services that may be able to replace the screen for less. Do a web search for "ipod repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPod serviced by an unauthorized shop, all further warranty will be void.

My iPhone is not backed up due to insufficient storage. I am deleting a number of files but would like to know what 'documents

Also, when scrolling through a message thread to find a particular message, sometimes I have no control over stopping at the wanted message - rapid scrolling right back to the first text occurs & often when I then try again, the reverse happens with rapid scrolling (uncontrollably) through the messages to the last message received.

It is Command+r or for the online internet system it is Command+option/Alt+r keys. Then you use Disk Utility to erase the macintosh partition, from the built in recovery hd, or you can repartition the drive as one partition from the online system.
To actually get to the online internet system you have to hold that key combo down until you see a globe on the screen. Otherwise it will just boot from the built in recovery hd on the internal drive.

Yeah, and it didn't work.
I had problems when I updated to iOS 5 (lost all my apps - a few of my friends had the same problem) and when there was an update to iOS 4 (camera wouldn't work). The iOS 5 issue was sorted by backup (but I lost the app data) but for the iOS 4 issue I had to return my iPod to get a new one.

Well not to get off topic but your company needs a new IT guy. You can slipstream all the updates into an install image and for that matter you can take one PC, updates it, create an image from it and use a universal install feature to image any PC with that updated image.
Now back on topic.
