I would like to make firefox browser window much smaller.

I think this would be so much easier but because I can't seem to shrink or decrease length of browser like I can the Google search window. When I pull it in it just increases length of Google browser window. There isn't room for my add-ons to show. It is unnecessarily long. This should be a complete no-brainer.
The Troubleshooter add-on doesn't show even though it has been installed because of this issue.

Are you talking about the location bar and the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar?
Those two bars have a flex attribute and expand automatically to fill the available space.<br />
When you add other items to the Navigation Toolbar then they should adjust their width automatically.
If you mean something different then please try to explain this with more details and possibly attach a screenshot.

  • I just upgraded my OS to "Lion" and would like to make the Mail icons/lettering smaller. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

How does one make Mail icons smaller?

    Howdy jandbfy,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re interested in changing the icon size in Mail for Mac OS X Lion. The article linked below provides information about customizing the sidebar in Mail and will walk you through the process of changing the icon size.
Lion Mail: Show or hide the sidebar
To adjust the size of the icons in the sidebar, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click General, and then select a sidebar icon size.
Also, you may be intersted in this article which provides details about customizing the toolbar in Mail.

  • I want ro remove all of the default Firefox bookmarks. There are way too many and none of which are usefull to me. I would like to make my old IE Favorites folder the default. How can I do this?

I need to remove the default Firefox bookmarks.
There are way too many and none of which are usefull to me.
Also, I am vision impaired and reading through such a long list is very eye-fatigueing to me.
I would like to make my old IE Favorites folder the default. How can I do this?

Did you import an iPhoto Library from the old Hard Drive? Do you still have that old Library?
The way to clear out a Library is to Export the photos - Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
    For the annoying start-up message:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
    Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

I desperately would like to update Firefox to version 10 from version 9 but each time I try, I am stuck with FF10 checking addons for compatability and the Welcome page opening every time I start the browser. I continue to have to revert to version 9 to resolve this issue.

Sorry to be a while getting back! Tried all of that with no sucess so this AM, bit the bullet and deleted the FF folder from programs and downloaded and installed FF 10.01. Still was plagued with the same problem. Went into the appdata folder and there were two sessionstore.js files. Deleted them both, restarted the browser and no compatibility check for add-ons was done at start up and the extra tab for Welcome to FF was no longer opening Everything seems to be working as it should and I did not loose any of my settings.. Thank you for trying to help and I hope my solution helps anyone else who might experience this in the future. Here's hoping the next update goes smoother!

    Hi tchmielewski,
You should look into [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync Firefox Sync]. I think it will do everything that you are asking for. This will allow you to have all of your Firefox preferences and settings shared across multiple computers.
You could also create a backup on a USB drive in case of catastrophic failture. I would suggest that you back up your personal information and bookmarks using the article [[Backing up your information]].
    Hopefully this helps!

I agree it is a very bad and wasteful design especially for users on small laptop screens.
You can drag it to whatever shape you want from the bottom left corner.
Click on the paintbrush to make the Format side panel disappear. However you will need to use that side panel for most formatting.

  • "Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on" - how to disable?

I am using the latest Firefox (28.0) on Windows XP in a shared computer environment. Although I do not have Administrator access, I installed Firefox myself and can change whatever Firefox config settings I want (including about:config and mucking with the files in the installation directory).
I want to disable the tab that appears on Firefox startup, "Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on". This tab usually appears once per day (the first time I startup Firefox each day). I want the tab not to appear at all, from now on.
The "another program" in question is some program that is used in the facility where I'm using the computer, so I can't just uninstall that program. Although this is a shared computer environment, they don't "wipe" the machine every day, just reboot. So the Firefox I installed is still there with all my config settings intact. As far as I know, I'm the only person who uses Firefox on this computer.
    Solutions that don't work:
"Just click Continue" -- but then I still see the "Another program" tab every day, and don't want to see it.
"Click Remove in the Add-ons list" -- I removed the Add-on in question but the tab still appears every day.
I would like a solution that either eliminates the Add-on request for that particular application, or eliminates all such requests ("Another program...") regardless of what application requested it. The ideal solution would be if the request itself had a checkbox for "never ask this again" but, alas, no such luck.

Gosh... I spent about an hour preparing a response, then accidentally did control-something or alt-something which took me back a page and I lost everything I typed (even after I clicked Forward to try to get back to where I was). If anyone knows of a config setting like "don't ever trash an entire page of user input unless the user explicitly confirms it", or, "keep form input data even if the user goes Back or Forward", I think that would be a great feature.
OK, back to the original question...
I appreciate the responses thus far, but I think there have been some misunderstandings. Maybe a multiple-choice version would help:
Question: Is there a way to suppress the appearance of the notification tab that says, "Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on" (meaning, any request from another program to install an add-on is to be silently ignored and discarded)?
    Answer:
    (A) Yes, you can suppress that notification (please state how).
    (B) No, but you can request that feature (please state where).
    (C) No, you can't do that or request that feature.
That's basically my question in a nutshell. If the answer is (B), I might envision a boolean about:config setting like "extensions.allowProgrammaticAddonRequests" that defaults to "true" and can be set to "false" manually. I think that would be the most direct solution (if it were possible).
I will respond to some comments from above:
"I don't understand why you are using a mozilla.cfg file to lock those preferences when you can modify the preferences for your current Firefox profile via about:config" -- This is because the "other program" in question (iCafe Manager) was setting certain config options (browser.startup.homepage, and browser.newtab.url) on every reboot (which happens every morning at that facility). I got tired of manually changing the settings back every day. Using the above-mentioned files, I successfully defeated iCafe Manager's daily interference with those config settings. The other things (like stuff related to Socks tunnelling) I probably could have just set once in about:config but doing a lockPref seemed to do no harm. The settings for "enabledScopes" and "xpinstall" were to see if they'd help with the problem I originally asked about, but they did not.
"I would look in about:config to make sure those preference modifications are in effect" -- yes, I confirmed that the settings are in effect and locked. That much works as expected.
"A) removing the iCafe Toolbar extension from the Firefox Addons -> Extensions panel results in the "Another program" tab at startup" -- true, but I think it would be more accurate to say: while the toolbar extension is not installed (due to either having been removed, or, never having been installed at all), the "Another program" tab appears on at least the first startup of Firefox after every reboot.
"B) when you allow the installation it shows up as "(disabled)" in the Extensions list but the unwanted toolbar still shows up (correct?)" -- yes, correct.
"You could explain the problem to the system administrator of your facility" -- unfortunately, there's no administrator on site, only a person who makes sure the lights are on. They'll call a tech if there's a catastrophic problem (like the net connection goes dead). Since I installed Firefox myself, and since iCafe Manager is a program they installed, I don't think they'll go out of their way to help me with Firefox (especially if I'm trying to defeat iCafe Manager's attempts to interfere with Firefox). From their point of view, their systems are working just fine.
"allow the installation and then see if you can go to the Firefox Customize menu and HIDE the toolbar as a workaround" -- since I'm not in that facility now (and probably won't be again until this summer or so), I can't experiment with those systems now. But I do recall clicking just about everything I could, including "View - Toolbars" (which seems to be the same menu as when I right-click on a toolbar line). That menu allows hiding toolbars, but from my recollection, the offending toolbar was not displayed in the list, so I could not hide it that way. Also, the Customize menu ("View - Toolbars - Customize") seems to allow only modifications to a toolbar, and not a way to hide an entire toolbar.
"it might help if you could post a new troubleshooting information list after you allow the iCafe Toolbar installation" -- ok, that troubleshooting report is included below.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • "Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on" - how do I allow extensions?

I cannot get extensions to run or enable, nor does the browser remember my preference.
For example, after I install or Enable an extension, when I restart Firefox I get a tab for every extension that forces me to check "Allow this installation" after the prompt "Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on".
Moreover, when I click 'Options' on an installed extension, Firefox freezes permanently.
Note that I DO NOT have any extensions.* files in my Profile folder, nor do they appear.
I am trying to get MozRepl running. I am able to install it, but the menu option does not get added in the 'Tools' menu. Moreover none of the installed extensions are able to add to the menu.
I've tried every solution in the following links
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/929335
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-to-fix-preferences-wont-save
I have made the Profiles\ folder and all subfolders Read-only, including the files.
I have tried the "Reset Firefox to its default state".
I have tried uninstalling (including removing all profiles/data) and re-installing Firefox, and I get the same issues.
My operating system is Windows 7 and I have McAfee SiteAdvisor Enterprise Plus and McAfee VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise.

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.
Right-click the Firefox desktop shortcut and choose "Properties".
Make sure that all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.
    * Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
    * "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected
Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

  • Since I installed Firefox 3.6.3, every time I open Google Notifier, two Firefox browser windows open.

I am running Firefox 3.6.3 on my Mac G5 and my MacBook.
Since I installed Firefox 3.6.3, everytime I open Google Notifier, two Firefox browser windows open. This happens on both of my computers.
This never used to happen before, in the earlier versions.
How do I make it so that only one browser window opens?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == I installed Firefox 3.6.3 ==
    == User Agent ==
    Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X 10_4_11; en) AppleWebKit/531.22.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Safari/531.22.7

I got this all screwed up too.
    hmm.. where to start?
3.6 and 4.0 beta - really aren't intended to play well together.
As has been mentioned above, they tend to write over each other.
I managed to get both 3.6.15 and 4.0 beta 12 on the same machine.
But, I had to do it several times.
I got lucky by deleting everything Mozilla, then installing 4.0b12, then 3.6.15 - while making sure that each installed into a separate folder.
I also took care to copy out a couple of BookMark BackUp files - just in case.
My old 3.6# had become so bloated - and, Unstable - for Me, it was time.
The bookmarks were all that I was still interested in.
All the Plugins, Themes, AddOns, etc... had slowed the app to a crawl.
So, I did as complete a wipe of Mozilla bloat code that I could, including profiles.
I then did some registry cleaning.
    Then I installed 4.0b12 and 3.6.15.
I can't open them both at the same time.
If I open 3.6.15 first, then open 4.0b12 - the beta comes up as 3.6.15.
If I open 4.0b12 first, then open 3.6.15 - the 3.6 comes up as the beta.
This has a lot to do with both apps sharing the same default profile.
I hope to drop down to one app in the near future.
So, cobbling multiple profiles in order to diddle side by side apps - isn't worth it at this stage.
For me, I can't open FF 4.0b12 when my virus protection is running. PCTools doesn't like some thing about the way FF4.0 wants to phone home when it opens.
So, I can't commit to the 4.0b12, yet.
3.6.15 was crashing on open too - until I uninstalled the feedback addon. - go figure -.
Also, I can't get the 4.0b12 to start in safe-mode with the PCTools antivirus running.
At the rater they are going, I don't see 3.6.# going away any time soon.

  • Firefox Browser window will not open or start.

Sorry that this is long, but I wanted to make sure you knew as much as you needed to know.
I click on the icon in my Windows taskbar, and the firefox browser window will not open.
This was not the first of my problems. At first, Firefox would open immediately, but soon afterward, it began to slow, and soon, it took around 10-15 seconds for the browser window to start.
Now it won't start at all.
I will admit that I go all addon-happy on Firefox, but these extensions have never been a problem before. Here is the list:<br />
    <pre>ReaditLater
ReloadEvery (this one doesn't work anymore, but I did have it once)
    Ookong
    PriceBlink
    StumbleUpon
    SimilarWeb
    WOT
XMarks (I didn't use it much)
NoScript (I recently uninstalled that one, but that might have a factor in it. That thing was WAY too powerful!)
    CoolIris
    CoolPreview
    AdHacker
    AdBlock
    AdBlockPlus
    PersonasExpression
    AntBar
ABE (I'm not sure if this was an extension, but I know that there was
alot of security-type addons from the Paranoid Kit, which is a
list of addons on the addons webpage.)
    </pre>
Oh yeah, one more thing! <br />
I recently installed a GameVance installation thing. I'm not sure what it did, but could've had a virus in it that surpassed my security. I use Avast, if that's important at all. That thing was hard to uninstall, so I had to go back to the site to get the uninstallation software.
I tried to use the firefox.exe -ProfileManager thing, but it kept crashing, so it was useless.
Please help me fix this. I love Firefox. It's the only browser that allowed you to use the most addons! Plus, ALL MY STUFF IS ON THERE! I'd hate to have to change browsers (and I REFUSE to use Internet Explorer!)

  • How can I remove livesearch from the Mozilla Firefox browser window?

Somehow I got the live-search malware embedded into the Firefox browser window. I have tried to remove it using SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot-S7D, and Malwarebyte. Plus ran AVG. Did all four of these several times. But I still have livesearch.
How do I get rid of it? Will uninstalling Firefox and the reinstalling it work. If I uninstall Firefox and reinstalling it, will I loos all my bookmarks?
    Please Help!
    Thanks,
    Naturewoman

Generally speaking, uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox doesn't solve most problems unless you remove all your personal settings, which I definitely do NOT recommend.
These kinds of infiltrations can take some effort to remove. To make it easier, Firefox now had a "reset" feature which preserves your bookmarks but strips away custom settings and extensions, which are the source of most problems.
You could try manually removing the "Printing Helper" extension and resetting your search settings first. If these don't help, then try the reset.
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
Then run the Search Reset extension from here:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/searchreset/
More info on reset: [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]
    Any luck?

  • My iPhoto Library is on an EHD, I would like to make a backup on a second EHD

My iPhoto Library is stored on an Seagate 1TB external hard drive (which is also my Time Machine or automatic backup), not on my MacBook Air. That means that I always carry the external hard drive wherever I go to access my photos (and to keep backing up my documents). I travel quite a bit so just in case the Seagate stops working, I would like to make a backup of my iPhoto library on a second EHD to leave at home.
I have another Seagate 500GB which I used in the past on a wifi for my iPad, which also contains some photos straight from my camera (that means they did not get the 'iPhoto treatment' as I don't want to clog up the iPad through Airdrop).
There is still plenty of room on this Seagate 500GB (300GB free) for an extra iPhoto Library backup. It should be simple enough but so far I have been unable to understand how. Clear steps to how to do it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

To check how the drive is formatted, connect it and run Disk Utility (in your Utiilty folder). Click on the drive's icon. (You'll see to icons, the top one is the drive itself and will have a name including the manufacturere's name and a second one is indented. Click on the top on. Now look in the bottom right corner of the DU window. WHat you want to see is: Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
If you don't the drive should be repartitioned. Click on the partition tab, Click on Current & select 1 partiton, click on options and select GUID. That will erase the drive. Now Click on the indented icon, click on the erase tab and make sure you see MacOS Extended (Journaled) next to the Format label. If not, click on the popup menu and select it. Then erase. Now the disk is ready.
If it is formatted for Mac already, after mounting the drive select its icon and select Get Info from the File menu. Look at the very bottom of the long dialog box. You should see a list of permissions, your user name should be listed and your permissions should be Read & Write. Or there might be a checkmark next to a label called Ignore Ownership. That should be checkmarked.

would like to have some ideas on how to do this
    laro.t

First format the drive to OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:
Next drag your iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the EHD.  When the copying is complete launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and in the window that comes up select the library on the EHD:
Check the file path under the window to make sure the correct library has been selected.
Once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working properly and has all of your photos you can delete the library in your Pictures folder.

  • Message "another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on" appears every time a new user logs in... Bad problem

I have just deployed an image to over 500 workstations, and they are all deep frozen using deepfreeze.
When users are logging in, and open Firefox they are getting the message "another program on your computer would like to modify firefox with the following add-on:" Adobe Acrobat - Create PDF 1.2
Yes I know u can do a one-time click and allow, but we have potentially 50,000+ students logging into these PCs and it is unacceptable that they are greeted with this message rather than the Homepage.
This is very dissapointing, as we upgraded to the latest version of firefox in preperation for rollout, and then added some software like adobe.
The profile is kept in the default user, so everytime a user logs in, they will get prompted with the message, and this will always happen because we use deepfreeze.
I need a FIX ASAP from mozilla on how to disable this pop-up via Group Policy...
    Not at all happy,
    Sharpy

    Hi,
One way you could try is to install Firefox on a fresh PC/image which has the same Adobe software versions installed as the clients. You may also have to install the same extensions as well as software for any additional plugins as on the clients. Start Firefox and make sure everything is okay. After that you can copy and overwrite the '''extensions.ini''', '''extensions.sqlite''' and '''pluginreg.dat''' files and probably the '''extensions''' folder and any supporting files of the extensions from this fresh profile, onto a client profile after temporarily disabling/unfreezing Deep Freeze. If everything is okay you can then push the changes onto the other clients via a logon/startup script after temporarily disabling Deep Freeze and then re-enable Deep Freeze.

  • I have problems with gameplay(zuma blitz and bejeweled blitz)in the firefox browser window. the game is latent and play is very jerky..can u please help. i played them in the IE8 browser with no problem

i've tried playing zuma blitz and bejeweled blitz in the firefox browser window and the play is very jerky and slow.

Just had the same thing happen AGAIN. Suddenly - a blank iPlayer Desktop which failed to download new programmes. All previous programmes were still in the repository folder. This time the sequence I outlined previously didn't work.
What eventually got things working this time was to reinstall Adobe Air as part of the BBC iPlayer Desktop installation process - and not separately.
    So:
    a) Move iPlayer to trash.
    b) Find and delete the following folder: Users/Yourname/Library/Preferences/BBCiPlayerDesktop.61DB7A798358575D6A969CCD73DDBBD 723A6DA9D.1
    c) Find and delete the following folder:
    Users/Yourname/Library/Application Support/Adobe/AIR/ELS/BBCiPlayerDesktop.61DB7A798358575D6A969CCD73DDB BD723A6DA9D.1
    d) Find and delete the following folder:
    Users/Yourname/Movies/BBC iPlayer/repository/cache
    e) Find and run: Applications/Utilities/Adobe AIR Uninstaller
    f) Empty the Trash. I found that bits and pieces of BBC iPlayer were still running despite having been quit and dumped in the trash - and so it wouldn't allow me to complete this part. Restarted the computer, then empty the trash.
    g) Find the folder: Users/Yourname/Movies/BBC iPlayer/repository and rename it repository2
    h) Reinstall iPlayer. It will tell you that you have no programmes to view. Quit the programme.
    i) Find and delete the folder: Users/Yourname/Movies/BBC iPlayer/repository
    j) Find the folder: Users/Yourname/Movies/BBC iPlayer/repository2 and rename it to repository.
    k) Relaunch iPlayer
It would be terribly nice if the BBC or Adobe stopped buggering about with this . . .
