when a word or phrase is underlined or off color, if you pass your mouse over it, a pop window appears with inane blather about that word/phrase. I would like to stop the pop-ups and, if I want information about that word/phrase, I will click on it.

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
          Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:

On some emails and websites phone numbers appear for a second or two and then disappear. If I reload the email or website, the number again appears for a second or two and then disappears. This doesn't happen when I open that same email or website in Internet Explorer.

Do you have Skype installed, I have seen similar reports about Skype causing this. Skype include a "number highlighting" option, and it may be malfunctioning and hiding the numbers instead of highlighting them. Ok my virus protection, I use Kaspersky, is detecting a packer every time I try to load Farmville on Facebook. This results in the game reloading over and over again. These pop up quickly with about blank in the address but nothing else. The path for this leads to Firefox...C:\Users\Toshiba\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\yipb6gme.default\Cache\C\4D\C1121d01. This was the last one shown in the list. It's a Swf2Swc. Today I have 24 at various times with 2 to 3 each time I tried to load Farmville. When my virus protection stopped them Farmville reloaded so I was never able to actually get into it.
How can I stop these.

I get pop-up notifications up in the corner from Facebook and after I clear the cache. This is new since I installed FF 32.

You can inspect and manage permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:
*Click the "[[Site Identity Button|Site Identity Button]]" (globe/padlock) on the location/address bar
*Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
*Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab
This includes the permission to show notifications.
I don't know if what you see falls under such a notification.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance

Pop-Ups windows are effectively being blocked in Safari, but some web-sites have updated their sites to open a window when you click on content on their site. This is not a Safari issues it is a web-site issue. I am not sure on how to stop these without stopping other features on the browser. I am getting pop ups that cover 3/4 of my screen These pop ups can be for gaming sites or advertising tool boxes. all and anything can be popping up.It usually happens with my local newspaper in Australia but the sites are overseas. If I go to a gaming site like Slingo which is in the USA I realise I have to allow the pop ups as they help pay for the free games.Their pop up do not interfere with what you are doing whereas the ones I am getting most certainly do.My pop up blocker is turned on but these are getting past it somehow. Apple can do nothing about spam coming from other sites unless you're using MobileMe or iCloud as your mail server, in which case they do some spam filtering but have to be very conservative about what they block. If you're referring to receiving emails from Apple, log into your Apple ID account:
Manage your Apple ID account
and go to the Language and Contact Preferences. You can remove yourself from Apple's mailing lists there.

When I start Firefox a bar entitled "Know your rights" appears that contains information about Mozilla but I would like to stop it from appearing.

I discovered a simple work-around that is successful (at this point in time anyways) on my IMAC/Maverick when sending attachments (not inline or embedded) to PC users.
There are several threads in here on why attachments embed in mac mail when sending to PCs, and I have had similar issues. Not sure where the fault lies, but other than purchasing an additional program to make mac mail work as other mail programs work when it comes to attachments, I found no real solution that worked for my business PC folks. I did all the right things - sent my attachments in mac mail "windows friendly," "plain text," and "attachments at the end" and still got complaints when sending to my pc workmates using Outlook. I tried another suggestion I found here - zipping the files and sending the zipped file, but my workmates did not like that either and still asked why?
By trial and error I discovered that when I attach any pdf to the email as well as the questionable jpgs, the attachments arrive in their PC inbox as attachments that can be used as needed. I don't know why this works, but it has made sending attachments a happier task for my business group.
I would be interested to see if this works for others.

Following through with what JB suggested. The steps involved in replacing the inner for loop with a while loop are outlined below.
You can replace the inner for loop with a while by doing the following.
1) Right-click of the for loop and select "Repalce" then navigate to the "while loop".
2) Make sure the tunnels you where indexing on with the for loop are still indexing.
3) Drop an "array size" node on your diagram. Wire the array that determines the number of iterations your for loop executes into this "array size".
4) Wire the output of the array size into the new while loop.
5) Set the condition terminal to "stop if true".
6)Drop an "OR" gate inside the while loop and wire its output to the while loops condition terminal.
7) C
reate a local of the boolean "stop" button, and wire it into one of the inputs of your OR gate. This will allow you to stop the inner loop.
8) Drop a "less than" node inside the inner while loop.
9) Wire your iteration count into the bottom input of the "less than".
10) Wire the count (see step 4 above) into the top input of the less than. This will stop the inner loop when ever the inner loop has processed the last element of your array.
Provided I have not mixed up my tops and bottoms this should accomplish the replacement.
I will let others explain how to takle this task using the "case solution".

My browser opens with multiple ad pop ups that slow down my PC. Every site I've been to has said to go to tools, options, pop up blocker. The pop up blocker is on and has been on. It does not help.

Sounds to me like malware on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
