  • What is the best way to backup all Photos, Videos, Music, and other documents so that I can basically clean up my laptop? I would like to keep all applications during the "reboot", and I already have an external hard drive.

I have filled up the 500 GB of internal storage on my Mid 2010 laptop, and I have no intentions of getting anything newer. I would like to backup basically everything so that I can pull it off a hard drive as needed, but I am worried if I "reboot" my laptop, I'll lose all files and applications.

You say that you already have an external hard drive? Of what capacity? With some libraries, it's simply a matter of dragging and dropping them to copy them to an external drive (such as videos, etc.). But you want to be a bit careful about moving your iTunes Library so you won't lose the links to your music (see -> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449 and http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751) and photos (see -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US).
Once you've established that your relocated Libraries are still functioning and that you've copied your movies, you can delete these items from your internal drive. You could, if you wanted, invest in a larger internal drive so that you could always have your data stored so that you can take it with you, of course.
But if you safely move all of your files to an external, you can trash the originals and make space on your internal drive.

  • TS1963 Migration is stuck on "looking for other computers" . I am uploading from an external hard drive.  Why is it searching for other computers and why is it stuck there for hours?

My computer is Stuck at "looking for other computers" while trying to Upload from an external hard drive using migration assistant.

Wow, the wording in Migration Assistant is misleading. I've never used it before, so I thought I would try to copy my files from the external drive ... my old iMac died, but I managed to get everything I need off it, using the 'cp' command in single-user mode. So I guess I'll just have to manually copy the files from the external drive to the new machine. I was hoping that Migration Assistant might help somehow, but obviously not.
    Thanks for the quick reply!

  • Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Is there a way for my macbook air (running Lion 10.7.2) to access an external hard drive on my Imac (running snow leopard 10.6.8) specifically for Iphoto and itunes?

Yes. For those two applications specifically there is sharing. This presumes both computers are on and connected to the same network.
In iPhoto, enable sharing by (on the iMac) going to the iPhoto menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my photos. You can either share the entire library or only selected albums. Now on your MacBook Air, in iPhoto, go to the same preference pane and select Look for shared photos.
iTunes has something similar. In the iTunes menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my library on my local network. On the other computer, look in the left column for SHARED and select the iMac. You can now play that music on the MacBook Air.
There are other ways to share files but for those two applications this is the simplest way.
    Best of luck.

  • External Hard Drive not working thanks to disk utility format MS Dos?

hello everyone, i have a problem and i have no idea what to do, heres the deal.
a friend of mine bought a toshiba external 320gb hard drive, i have 100gb of video footage he needed, i opened the hard drive, used it without a problem, he took it home and he couldnt use it on his PC so i did some research and found out that to use it on a PC and MAC i had to format it using disk utility to MS dos, so i did that, after that both my macs dont recognize the HD and if i try a PC, it appears but you cant do anything with it, if i try to format it it says to insert a disk in that drive....
is there anyway i can fix this? or do i owe my friend a 320gb external HD?
    thanks

Mac format is different than windows format. Fat32 is recognized by both systems, but has its limitations. You just need to reformat the drive to NTFS on a PC. I believe HFS+ was probably what your original drive was. If it was Fat32, it would have been recognized on the PC.
For future reference, just install the NTFS driver on your mac. You can find it here http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g. Reformat the drive on a PC, install the driver and you can read and write to Windows NTFS drives and never have to worry about it again. Just right click on it in Windows and format it to NTFS.
    Hope that helps.

  • How will an external Hard drive designed for the macbook Pro work with my White Macbook?  My  white macbook has a Firewire 400 and the G-Tech HD has a 800 to 400 compatible cable for the firewire.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive  says that it is designed for the macbook pro.  Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.)  The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB.  Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time)  won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.)  Can I just plug in my laptop?  Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

  • What external hard drive will work for my 2012 mac book air

i dont want to spend money on one incompatible

Don't use any Western Digital HDD.
I recently bought this one, it is excellent:
Toshiba Canvio Connect 2TB Portable Hard Drive, Black (HDTC720XK3C1)
If you need a smaller capacity, then so be it. You can run almost any external HD with your Mac. Larger capacity drives, or arrays, require external power sources so as not to overload your USB bus power supply. Smaller, compact HD do not require this.
When you connect the drive, you simply need to reformat it using disk utility.
    1) Open Disk Utility
    2) Plug in your drive. Select the external HD in disk utility
    3) Select the 'Erase' tab for the drive
    4) Under 'Format' , select Mac OS extended (journaled) with a GUID partition table.
    5) Name the drive, click Erase
    You are good to go.

  • It takes like more than a day to copy folders of total 30gb from my external hard drive to my macbook pro. And same is to transfer from one destination to another within the macbook. i bought it on november 2012 it was fast then. don't know what happen?

i am having problem copying any files or folders from any external device or moving between folders within the macbook. its too slow and takes a load of time. as you can see above picture it makes all clear.
its not even old i just bought it on november 2012. it worked fine 2-3 weeks but now it not good. even apps take more time to open. it is getting too slow so soon. anyone with solutions ? please help me.

What kind of external device is it? USB 2 is the slowest port on the Mac, Firewire 800 and eSATA and Gigabit Ethernet are much faster, USB 3 and Thunderbolt are extremely fast.
Also, if the hard drive is almost full things can slow down.

  • I get an error message when I try to empty the trash in order to clear up an external hard drive.  I had been using it for time machine, have shifted that to a larger external hard drive, and want to free up the space for photographs.  Any suggestions?

What should I do when I get an error message (error code - 8003) when I'm trying to empty the trash to clear up additional space on an external hard drive?

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • Can I and if so, how do I move the whole of iTunes from my computer to my external hard drive? I have absolutely no space left on my computer and desperately need to free up space! Many thanks for help:)

How do I move iTunes completely off my computer and onto my external hard drive? I have no more space on my computer and need to free up space quickly! will iTunes work from external hard drive only? many thanks :)

With iTunes closed, copy (safer if you don't yet have a backup) or move the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> to X:\ as X:\iTunes (where X is the drive letter of the external). Press and hold down shift as you click the icon to start iTunes, keep holding shift until asked to choose or create a library, click choose, then browse to and open X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
Note that changing the advanced preference for the media folder location doesn't change where iTunes expects to find existing content. Moving the library in the way outlined above however will work.
You should think about backing up your library to another external drive or network share.

  • Do I need to partition my external hard drive for a bootable backup

Hi - First, I apologize for asking a question that's already been discussed so much.  I did try to read everything I could, but I remain confused.  Here is my precise situation:
I have an iMac, and I purchased a year's worth of Carbonite's online backup and breathed a sigh of relief.  Then I read some people have problems with Carbonite, and the best advice was to buy an external hard drive, which I did.  It just arrived, I plugged it in, and Time Machine backed up my computer on it...so I breathed another sigh of relief.
Then I read that my wonderful new 2T external hard drive isn't good enough, that I should partition it so as to have one backup, and one "bootable backup."  Is this really necessary?  And what is the difference between a backup, and a bootable backup?  If it is necessary, how do I do it?  Is it a problem that I've already used it to create a backup on Time Machine?
I use my computer for things like email, Facebook, pictures, eBay, stuff like that.  I have no unusual needs.  My computer is an iMac OS X 10.6.8.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

I prefer a clone/bootable backup ovver Time Machine myself.
For TM you need a running OS, then time to restore, with a clone you can boot from that & keep working while doing the other when time is better. And you can test a clone before you need it.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

    Or SuperDuper...

You would need to Partition your drive though.
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

  • Artwork for Videos on External Hard Drive

Hi, I have a 1.5 TB external hard drive that has movies, tv episodes, and videos on it. When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, and my external hard drive to my computer, I drag and drop the videos from the drive to my iPhone. I'd like to have artwork for the videos without storing them on my computer's hard drive. I would also like it to show on the iPhone a preview of the videos, such as a movie poster. How can I do this? Thank you in advance!!

iPhoto is not involved in moving the library - and 3GB is far below the minimum required 10GB
    To move the iphoto library
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Help! Need two profiles on an external hard drive for two ipods

    Hi,
The issue is that I have a very outdated labtop with limited storage space. Wanting to expand my music collection, I downloaded music. However, I soon ran out of hard drive space so I purchased a large external hard drive. To add to the complication, I then purchased a new ipod. The problem is that I am unable to get itunes to work with this configuration. I contacted technical support but recieved no helpful advice.
So, my question to you is how do I recieve the intended results?
To clarify, I want the capability to have two seperate "profiles" of sorts, one for one ipod one for the other with the music stored on an external hard drive.
Any assistance you could offer would be GREATLY appreciated as this has caused nothing but problems.
    Thank you in advance.

You don't have to use 2 profiles, I certainly don't.
But it's personal preference....here is an article on that
Using Multiple iPods With One Computer
I like method 2, because then you don't have to hassle with iTunes not dealing with Windows fast user switching properly.
Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported
