I would like to use iPhoto to see existing Picture folder without importing

The following is a question for Aperture, as well.
I have a huge Picture file (90G), and I do not want iPhoto to import that Picture folder thereby making a duplicate. I only want one Picture file, the existing system folder called Pictures. And I want iPhoto to "reference" those files. I have seen references to setting up iPhoto (and Aperture) to use photos in outside libraries. I have seen them called "referenced"
But I can't find a specific instruction on how to set up iPhoto to do this. And I think it is crazy to have an iPhoto library of 90G, and an aperture library of 90g (already made that mistake, want to get rid of it), because that would give me three sets pf photos, with Pictures, and iPhoto and Aperture Libraries within Pictures (that's where the Aperture library is now). And the iPhoto library is there too, but is now empty. I do not want it to be filled. The User guide says Aperture (and by inference, iPhoto) can "link" to outside photos and create "referenced" libraries.
That is what I want to do, because I do not want my files within iPhoto and Aperture, because they are too hard to handle for other purposes, like using Preview for a quick look, or using Photoshop for editing. Not to mention the waste of disk space created by 2 libraries and the Pictures folder. And the confusion over time about which Photo is the real one.
Surely there is a better way, a way to have iPhoto (and Aperture) use the existing Picture folder in OSX (Snow Leopard).
Can anyone help me here?
Just tell me there is a way to do this, please.
Hope someone can help.

Your question is based on a false premise. It makes no sense to use iPhoto, Aperture and the Finder to manage the photos. The Finder isn't a photo manager. It's a file manager. If you can't grasp that distinction then you stick with the Finder. Both iPhoto and Aperture (and Lightroom, and Picasa) are Photo Managers. The entire point of these apps is to manage the photos without recourse to the files.
If you use a Photo Manager then you don't use the Finder's Quicklook, you use the application's viewing and sharing features.
Think of it this way: would you write your novel in Word, Pages, TextEdit and Nisus Writer at the same time? And also expect to be able to read it without launching your Word Processor?
So, yes, this is crazy:
And I think it is crazy to have an iPhoto library of 90G, and an aperture library of 90g (already made that mistake, want to get rid of it), because that would give me three sets pf photos, with Pictures, and iPhoto and Aperture Libraries within Pictures (that's where the Aperture library is now).
Because you would not use all three options. iPhoto and Aperture do essentially the same job. If you've purchased Aperture then that's the one to use. It's the more powerful application.
But regardless of which you choose, when you do you give up looking at the files in the Finder, you use the Photo Manager.
, because I do not want my files within iPhoto and Aperture, because they are too hard to handle for other purposes, like using Preview for a quick look, or using Photoshop for editing.
Both apps provide integration with Photoshop. Using Photoshop via the Finder and not via the app will cause you problems.
None of these apps are like Photoshop. Photoshop is a layer based pixel editor. These other apps are Digital Asset Managers. It's not the same thing. Photoshop has no management capability at all.
And the confusion over time about which Photo is the real one.
Now you need to do some reading on Photo Managers. All of them use a Non-Destructive workflow. All of them preserve your original photos, The concept of the "real one" makes no sense when you have many possible versions based on a single master file.
You've not grasped the key distinctions in managing digital photos. You're confusing photos with files, confusing the file manager with a photo manager and have given no consideration to Digital Asset Management. I would consider these issues before going any further.
FWIW: using a referenced Library with iPhoto:
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Using iPhoto with Photoshop:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • Can't see my Pictures folder when importing in LR5 CC on Mac

I've been using LR5 for a while. When I use the import function I usually set it to import into subfolders By date. And I put them into my Image Master Library folder in my Pictures folder on my Mac. So I end up with my images in Macintosh HD/Users/karl/Pictures/Master Image Library/2014/04/29 for example.
However today when I try to import the only folders I can see under my Macintosh HD are Application, Library, System and User Information. I can't see my Users/karl/Pictures folder any more. I'm not sure if I've done something to stop me seeing it, but I can navigate to it fine in the Finder and see all my images that I've previously imported in there. Plus the images are still showing up in LR ok when I use the Library tab as normal.
I'm really stuck as at the moment I can't import my images into the right place at all. Is this a bug, a setting I've changed, and OS feature???
    Any advice really appreciated!!
    Thanks

  • Hi, I would like to change the location of the main folder in which I keep my pictures. how do I do it without messing out my catalog? thanks

    Hi,
I would like to move the location of my picture folder (with the catalog) and would like to know how to do it without messing the catalog...
    thanks in advance

    2 options.
Within Lightrooms Folders panel, drag the folder you wish to move to the location you wish to move it to. You may have to add the folder you wish to move it to first.
    OR (probably easier)
Move the folder in the Finder/Windows Explorer the in Lightroom right click on the folder (which is now missing) and select update folder location. Navigate to the folder and select choose

  • I would like to use time Machine to back up to a network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it

I currently have a mini server (OSX10.8.5, server 2.2.2) that I am using Time Machine to back up 4 external drives that are connected to the server via firewire 800. I would like to use Time Machine to back up to a windows network SMB drive. I can see the drive on my desktop but it will not show in the time machine window to be able to select it for use.
    Can this be done
Thanks for any and all help

The supported targets for Time Machine backups are local (direct-connected) disks, and network targets include Time Capsule, a disk hanging off the current-generation AirPort (though not earlier AirPort devices), and OS X Server systems.
The Time Machine storage is based on the HFS+ file system, so I would not expect TM to work with SMB file services.
While there are hacks to allow Time Machine to access network drives, I would not consider those to be reliable. Skim the forum and the 'net for related details, and for previous discussions of setting this up and the related issues that can arise.
Remember to test the recovery with whatever you decide to use; whole point of backups is the ability to restore the data, after all.
If you want to learn more about Time Machine, Pondini is an excellent resource.

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.
Additionally I have no idea what you are saying here
I have found the color palettes but can't seem to incorporate them into my backgrounds palette.
And it always helps for you to dientify the version of iPhoto that you are using

  • Would like to use WD MyBook external SOLELY for my iPhoto library and remove it from my hard drive to clear up space. How do I do this?

I just bought a 3TB My Book that I would like to store my iPhoto library on and remove it from my hard drive completely. I am running Time Machine with another external drive as back up and would like to use Time Machine to also back up my photos that will be on my My Book external. How do I move my iPhoto library to my new external and delete it from my hard drive? The catch is that I only want this new external to be for my iPhoto. I don't want Time Machine to start backing up my entire hard drive, since I already have an external dedicated to back up. I have not attached my external yet because I am afraid it will automatically start backing up my entire hard drive. I am very experienced on a Mac but not very technical so please, no big words and THANKS MUCH in advance!!

First format the drive to OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:
Next drag your iPhoto library from your Pictures folder to the EHD.  When the copying is complete launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and in the window that comes up select the library on the EHD:
Check the file path under the window to make sure the correct library has been selected.
Once you've confirmed that the EHD library is working properly and has all of your photos you can delete the library in your Pictures folder.

  • Would like to use/see extended ascii characters in...

I've got an E72 and I love it, but I would like to be able to see and use extended ascii characters.  Here is an example: σ__σ .  It looks like an upside-down, mirror-image capital Q on either side of the regular underline character.  To get the character I use ALT-229 on my Windows keyboard.  I can type this into my sms's or emails using ctrl-229, but it looks like a small "a" with a little "u" over it.  It looks the same way when it gets to my Windows email, so the character is not being sent properly from my E72.
Am I just using the wrong ascii code?  Help!

    I did a little testing.
    SMS:
when I create a text message to send to myself as a test, I can use ctrl-963 and on my original text message it looks like the lower case sigma, the character I want.
When I get the text message, the character looks like an upper case sigma (the "M" on its side).
The character is not supported at all in the regular Nokia Messaging app.
    EMAIL:
When I attempt to use the character in creating a message, it just gives me a question mark character.
When I get an email with the character, again it just gives me a question mark character.
It appears that this is indeed a matter of software.  I-sms will support showing me that character, but not receiving it.  Profimail (the mail app I am using) doesn't support it either way.
This isn't critical.  I will keep it in the back of my mind when evaluating this kind of app, and try suggesting to the programmers of both apps that supporting the extended character set would be handy, particularly in text messaging.

  • HT1229 How do I back up my entire iPhoto library to an additional hard drive.  I have a WD 1TB hard drive which I would like to use as a backup drive to my MacBook Pro.  What steps do I take to do this.  Thank you

How do I back up myentire iPhoto library to an an additional hard drive,  I have a WD My Book 1TB hooked up to my MacBook Pro via USB 2 port.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

    Ryan,
I have followed the steps on the Knowledge Base "How do I use DDE To Send Data Across the Network To Excel From Lookout?" but what I am seeing is that the computer with excel (Computer B)hangs up displaying an hour glass continuously leaving me no option but to go into task manager to stop excel.  It appears to me that the dde share is not working properly on my windows xp where lookout resides or I do not have a certain service turned on.  I do have the DDE services turned on both computers.  I have my computer set up as computer A with Lookout and Process1 as the process with a pot set up as pot1.  On my computer (Computer A) I also have the dde share set up per the KB example.
On computer B I have the dde services turned on and I am typing the following into an excel worksheet Cell  ='\\TAG23232\NDDE$'|'Process1$'!Pot1
TAG 23232 is Computer A's Name
    Do you have any suggestions???

  • Would like to use iWeb for a photography website

    Hi all,
Please bear with me on this. The question I am going to raise has been asked on the forum in bits and pieces but don’t think I was able to find a comprehensive solution to it.
I currently maintain a photography website which is hosted overat my-expressions.com. Link - http://staticmemory.my-expressions.com/
I love (for the most part) how I have got my site laid out here. The problem is that the host is no longer supporting the platform and hence it means no additional storage space to buy, etc. Basically the hosting platform is going to be abandon-ware in the next few months. Hence, I have decided to build something out on my own. Have purchased a domain and currently have got it to point to my existing photo site.
My Question – Now that you guys have the context, I would like to use iWeb to replicate something similar and host the new site on my own domain. Unfortunately, I know no code but if there is something reasonable, I am willing to spend time and figure things out. I can really see how iWeb can come in handy to create the pages, etc. It’s the adding the comments piece underneath each photo and the option to purchase prints is what I am having concerns about. If you take a look at my website, you will see how one can click on the Purchase Print link right below each photo and that will provide them with options on the print size and then taket hem over to paypal. Works great in the current environment.
Any pointers on replicating the Comments and Purchase Printfunctionality in iWeb will be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    RG

BNN, even though I understand what KT is saying, your thought resonates with mine. When it comes to building and maintaining my website, I see myself more as a photographer than as a web designer. Hence, even though Apple may not be actively developing (and we are guessing on this one, arent we) iWeb, the existing functionality should do plenty of good to me for next couple years at least.
That said, they released a point update a few days back and with the whole cloud thing building momentum and mobile me going for free, why would Apple want to pull the plug on such a fantastic product?

I have paid for it and all...

    You can't do anything. See:
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
Your computer does not meet the requirements to run Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
