I would sell my PS3 and buy an Apple TV if...

...it could view/record Freeview or Freesat (UK).
At the moment I have the PS3 with PlayTV, which works well, but I find myself hardly ever playing games on it any more, and using it mostly for music, photos, videos and TV. At the moment, we are really missing the online movie rental side of things, typically my wife and I will decide to rent a movie on the evening we want to watch it, but by the time we get to the Blockbuster in town, they don't have what we want. At the moment, I'm renting on iTunes, transferring to my iPhone and playing on the device through the TV... however I would prefer a more convenient and HD solution.
Apple TV could be a huge hit in the UK, it would fill the gap between home-produced media (photos, home movies), Music playback, broadcast TV, HD viewing and on-demand Movie rentals without being location specific (a la Virgin) and without warranting huge subscription fees and horrible user interfaces (a la Sky). A Flash-supported browser would be sweet too for YouTube and iPlayer (don't know if this is already the case).
I like the idea of being able to search for a Movie/TV show using Apple TV, it checks the broadcast EPGs as well as iPlayer and the iTunes Store and presents the option of recording the broadcast, streaming from iPlayer or buying/renting the item. If I choose to record it, it would then be the icing on the cake if I could then transfer it back to my iTunes library on my Mac, or directly to an iPhone/iPod in h.264 format.
It would be media bliss... what would I pay for this? I would expect to pay about the same as a second-hand PS3 with PlayTV.
How would I expect Apple to achieve this? I would expect that an Apple TV with greater HDD capacity and the TV tuner as an option that, the Tuner could have separate model numbers for different regions and standards... so for the UK, there would be two modules, one for Freeview (DVB-T) and one for Freesat (DVB-S2). Plus a software update. The Tuner modules could even house hardware h.264 encoder so that what's recorded is in an iTunes friendly format (unlike the PS3 which records everything in MPEG2... useless for transferring to a portable device).
The Cherry on the icing would be the ability to rip my DVD collection into iTunes... but that's another discussion.
thanks,
Glyn.

Indeed, Apple IS a content provider, they also sell hardware! I can imagine that the Apple TV would simply fly off the shelf if this kind of functionality was included. The future success of iTunes depends on popularising Apple hardware within the home, especially when it comes to on-demand video. Being able to record TV is what the majority of people would regard as the main feature of the device. In fact, it would be very much in-line with my perception of Apple's current strategy... demonstrate the key 'selling' feature of the device as the headliner then when the consumer buys the hardware, all the other brilliant functionality presents itself and intices the consumer to 'want more' by imposing a sense of opportunity. Apple TV would reach the masses by headlining "Record TV, then sync straight to your iPhone/iPod". Then Apple could spin up a whole wad of cash by suggesting and selling TV episodes that they've missed, downloaded from iTunes.
I appreciate what the current iteration of Apple TV achieves, and I envy it over my PS3 for its simplicity... Despite not owning one, I think the idea of being able to 'push' and 'sync' content to your device as opposed to streaming it over a network is a much welcomed feature... DLNA has caused nothing but trouble for us and obviously requires another device to be switched on in order to serve up the content. Not very power friendly, reliable or convenient. You can of course copy content to the PS3, but then if you make an edit to a video, photo or playlist you need to manually re-download it again.

  • I don't want to know how to delete duplicate photos anymore. I would like to know why Apple have not put in delete duplicate option menu in iPhoto? Very curious. Is it to frustrate users, so they have to go out and buy another apple photo product?

Just want to know why Apple have not made an options menu to remove duplicate photos in iPhoto? I know about downloads you can purchase to delete Dups, but I'm very interested to find out from apple themselves as to why they left this out, to die without knowing this is like having viruses on a pc or waiting for the web page to pop up on windows...
    Option
    A. Is it to annoy the user, to frustrate them enough to go out there and buy another apple photo product?
    Or
    B. Is it to annoy the user, to frustrate them enough to commit suicide, to reduce population in the world?
Is there a third reason? Can someone help me, otherwise I'll have to go with option B.

We have three operational computers, one does not have iTunes on it.  Since Apple is saying I have more than 5 authorized computers, and I can't imagine what they are, I am afraid to deauthorize all my computers.  See what I mean?  I just wanted to ask the question about how I can find out WHICH computers Apple thinks I have authorized, so I can decide if it's safe to deauthorize them all or not.
You could have more 5 computers authorized if you ever, for example, reformatted a hard drive or replaced a hard drive without deauthorizing the computer first. Apple's system would see that as a different computer, even though you don't. There's nothing to be afraid of in deauthorizing everything and the reauthorizing what you actually have. You won't lose any data. Mistimp is correct, they can't tell you which computers are authorized.

  • Sell my BluRays and buy all my movies in iTunes?

    Hello all,
So I've got an odd question in which i'm looking for some opinions. I am a HUGE movie junkie and easily have about roughly 200 Blu Ray movies. I love watching movies all the time obviously but I've recently moved into an apartment where the space is limited and i've been toying with the idea of selling off all my Blu Ray movies in favor of rebuying them in iTunes. I know that I will probably pay out of pocket to make the switch and to be honest I'm not bothered by that as saving space is more important to me. So, I'm wondering what everyone else thinks about moving an entire movie collection to all digital. Has anyone else done it? What are your opinions either way? I appreciate any helpful info!

The Store claims to be showing '1 item' but is showing none: on subscribing your one episode shows and downloads OK. You don't want to hear this, but I'm afraid it is the dreaded Store display bug. Usually it sorts itself out eventually, but two weeks is rather a long time. There isn't anything you can do yourself about it. You could try emailing Support at podcasts 'at' apple.com, but to be brutally honest you probably won't get a helpful reply. However you have nothing to lose by trying and you might get lucky and they actually do something.

Yeah but that's ok. This is an easy fix.
Uninstall Acrobat from your old computer. Then reinstall using the downloadable installer here --->PDF converter, PDF editor, convert to PDF | Adobe Acrobat XI Pro subscription
Then open it and go to Help and feed your serial number in there.

  • If I buy a mac nook air in USA and use it in india or some other country will I get the same service and replacement facility and buy the apple protection plan in some other country?

Will I be able to use the same services in other country?
Will I be able to book the apple protection plan in other country?
If at all I get a replacement for my mac book air, then will I have to send it to the country from where I bought or anywhere?

It looks as though the Mac has a global warranty.  Take a look at Applecare Protection Plan for Mac or Apple Display for full details.
It likely depends on the availability of Apple stores or authorised repair agencies in the country you will be in.

  • MacBook Pro Cost/Benefit to repair old, or sell and buy new?!

I have used a Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo (15.4-inch) for the past four years of college. In that time I've had it repaired once for some spillage, but other than that nothing has been done. The laptop has recently been showing serious age. I don't have a ton of extra cash, and was wondering if it would be smartest to A) Buy piecemeal repairs, and fix this one or B) sell/scrap this and purchase something new. I don't know the numbers enough to do a cost-benefit, so any help would gladly be appreciated!

    Hi r,
Without addressing the cost of each item, I can give you my opinion that it is time for an upgrade (new/er MBP). You'd basically be replacing the logic board, RAM, HD, battery, upper case, lower case, and possibly the display and keyboard. That's almost the entire machine. And you'd have to buy Snow Leopard, the latest OS. Then you'd be left with a set of "new" old hardware which should work fine for another couple of years, but you could instead be driving the latest/fastest model for not a lot more money, which should last well beyond what the old machine would last, thereby actually making it cheaper in the long run. Also factor in selling the old MBP on ebay or craigslist for parts, and that makes a new MBP even more cost effective.

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

I bought and downloaded a movie to my macair and it showed in my library yesterday. Today however i can not find it. Any idea why that would be? I did buy it and not rent FYI

    OK, I think I understand what's happening.
Movies are now stored in iCloud: see http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2012/03/movies-now-available-on-icloud .html
So they may take a while to download to your Mac.  Movies are big, after all.
I believe you can guarantee the movie stays on your Mac by going to Preferences (in the iTunes menu at the top), and going to the "Advanced" tab, and checking "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library".
    Hope that helps!

If i buy an apple product from the actual customer who bought it, and i face some problem with it, but the device is still under warranty, so would there be any issue for getting the device checked?

If you make an appointment at the Genius Bar about a problem, they will check and evaluate the device, and if it warrants a replacement under warranty, they make the final determination. We are users here. This is a user to user support forum. We cannot determine what Apple will do. I can tell you what I already did, the warranty follows the device.

You won't need a plug adapter if you buy a figure-of-eight mains lead (like most portable radios etc) with a UK plugtop to replace the original lead.

From the iTunes terms and conditions:
"All sales and rentals of products are final."
There are no refunds. However, you can contact iTunes support & plead your case:

  • Ps3 and Xbox 360 already asked many times but no solution works

    Hi,
first of all I'd like to share with all of you my real disappoint for having bought this Airport Extreme Base Station. I really hope that someone at Apple will read my post and come to my house because I would have just a few words to tell them.
After 4 years of proficuous cooperation my Netgear WI-Fi router left me and I immediately thought to replace it with an Apple product just to be sure that it would have been easy to install and on top of performances.
I chose the Airport Extreme which is much more expensive than quite all the other same product but I didn't care about it because I would have brang home an excellent product.....or...at least I thought it !
Once in my room the soap opera began. I'm not a genius but I consider myself a medium skilled user and, in any case, even it is not my real job, I configured many bigger LANs than my personal ones and I never had such kidn of problem.
I read many posts where people were asking for information because they couldn't connect their Airport Extreme to their PS3 or Xbox 360 but I never had such kind of problem. It really worked immediately and both consoles worked in few moments.
My REAL problem is that both of them are terribly slow and I can't do anything online. I can't see streming videos, I can't play online and I can't neither play videos that are on a LAN DLNA server !!!!! It takes about 35 seconds to play a video and some times it has to stop for empty buffering reason. This is really unacceptable.
I tried so many configurations and nothing changed and I also took a look at some guides but they had been written with old firmwares so they are quite unuseful for me.
After having asked a friend of mine to give me his router (a Netgear ones) for some days I finally made myself sure that the problem is the Airport Extreme.
It also has a very poor signal because my iPhone has difficulties to keep the connection in areas where my old router worked fully.
If only I could turn back time I'd never buy it again but now, having spent to useless my money, could you please let me know a working configuration for the latest firmware 7.4.2 ? I tried to use the previous firmware but I have the same problems.
There is only a wall separating the Airport Extreme from the PS3 and Xbox and both of them get a 100% of signal but I really don't know what to do.
Thanks for all the help you could provide me.
    Bye.
    Christian

Sorry but I have no way to measure the actual throughput for any of my devices (I have 2 Xboxes which have the same problem and even my iPhone suffer of a bad connection).
In any case I really can't understand why the connection is so bad. I can even get in touch with my ISP to ask them if there is some problem with the connection (maybe a coincidence and the Airport Extreme has nothing to do with it ?????) but the facts remain: even my DLNA server and PS3 connection is slow and I can't clearly see the movies I have in my intenal LAN and also the iPhone show a poor connection to the Airport Extreme and it is because of the Extreme for sure.
I really don't know what to do.

  • Just imagine how many more iPhones Apple would sell if....

Just imagine how many more iPhones Apple would sell if they allowed you to buy them as gifts.
Seriously, the only way to purchase one as a gift is if you pay the non-contract price which is astronomical (over $600).
I know they need the account owner to be there to sign and activate the new phone, but there should be a way you can buy it as a gift at the upgrade price (assuming you know they're eligible) and AT&T gives you a window of time to have the person come in and activate it.
And before you ask, I don't do gift cards. I like giving real gifts. It would've been great to give both my sister and her husband iPhones for Christmas, but I'm not allowed.

You need to bring this up with AT&T, as it has nothing to do with Apple. AT&T is the one that is subsidizing the price, and they have their own requirements that must be fulfilled in order to get that price.
