I686 CPU or x86-64 CPU?

Well which one should i download, i have a intel core 2 duo processor, 2.4 GHz. also What is the difference between them?

You should definitely go for x86-64, but you'll miss out on wine and skype from the repo.
Don't expect too much of a performance boost.

what do you mean miss out on wine, i cant install wine, on the wiki you provided me it said it was stable and available in the AUR, wine is a very important program to me
What he means is that you will not get native 64 bit support for wine. you will have to install the 32 bit versions of wine and skype.
Even 64bit Windows 7 does not have all apps as 64 bit. All the apps that install by default into Program Files (x86) are actually 32 bit apps and the ones that go in Program Files are 64 bit apps

  • Java SE minimum CPU requirement for x86

According to Windows System Requirements for JDK and JRE the min. CPU requirements for JDK 7 is a Pentium II 266 MHz.
    A Pentium II is a i686 CPU.
However, the installation packages for Oracle JDK 7 available at Java SE Development Kit 7 - Downloads | Oracle Technology Network | Oracle show i585 package names. Should they not be called i686 to be correct?
    Thanks.

Actually they show 'i586' in some names.
Should they not be called i686 to be correct?
Probably - it if concerns you that much just use one of the 'contact us' links on that page and report it to Oracle.

  • Kernel patch for more CPU families offers measurable speed increases

I wanted to show folks a pretty nice patch that allows one more options when compiling a kernel for CPU families.  Complete list included at the bottom of this post.  I tested it using three different x86_64 machines running a generic x86-64 kernel and an otherwise identical kernel running with the optimized gcc options.
Conclusion: There are small but real speed increases using a make endpoint to building with this patch.
    Details:
    1) Three test machines: Intel Xeon X3360, Intel i7-2620M, Intel Core i7-3660K.
    2) All ran the make benchmark (linked below) 35 times while booted into a 'generic' kernel. Then all ran the same make benchmark 35 times after booting into an optimized kernel. Below are the optimizations chosen for each machine.
    2a) X3360 = core2
    2b) i7-2620M = corei7-avx
    2c) i7-3660K = core-avx-i
    3) Analyzed resulting distributions for statistical significance via ANOVA plots that clearly show statistically significant albeit small differences.
    Discussion
    1) All the assumptions for ANOVA are met:
*Data are normally distributed as show in the normal quantile plots.
*The population variances are fairly equal (Levene and Barlett tests).
    2) The ANOVA plots clearly show significance.
*Pair-wise analysis by Tukey-Kramer shows significance at the 0.05 level for all CPUs compared.
Below are the differences in median values:
    core2       +87.5 ms
    corei7-avx  +79.7 ms
    core-avx-i  +257.2 ms

graysky wrote:Practically, why do you need more than a few frequencies?  For example, you're idle.  I would want the lowest freq.  You're under load.  I would want the highest frequency.  For situations in between, say launching a program, or moving data, whatever, an intermediate frequency would be fine.  What do you hope to achieve with a more refined list of available frequencies?
I agree, your CPU, in practice, is really either idle or loaded.
In my case (AMD 965, 4 freq steps) the processor is at lowest freq for about 90 - 95% of a time, and at highest for 5 - 10%. The 2 intermediate are used for about 0.1% of a time.
My guess would be that intermediate ones are only used for smooth transition from lowest to highest. So they really are hardware dependent...

  • -march=x86-64 -mtune=generic ; generic is i686!

I just wanted to add that the arch packages and makepkg.conf on arch64 uses c(xx)flags that state to use x86-64 instruction sets, but tune for i686!
i686 means e.g. half the registers and no sse/sse2 support enabled, besides the half bandwith of the registers!
I hope I understand the gcc docs right when they say that "Moreover, specifying -march=cpu-type implies -mtune=cpu-type.", as then the -mtune flag is just redundant, but i'm not entirelly sure that I understand that right, since e.g. Slackware32 and Zenwalk uses i484 and i686 tuning and VectorLinux uses i586 and i686 tuning, so maybe the gcc statement means that -march only implies -mtune, if not -mtune is added specifically in addition to the -march ?

    OK, Thanks!
Sorry, but if I can just come with one final closing argument; I know it's the same as i've said before, but I will just cut it out in cardboard now, or so to speak...
Under the -mtune option there's listed a bunch of cpu-types and cpu-families,but they are all called cpu-type in the man, no matter if they are a cpu-family: "The choices for cpu-type are"...
Now under generic it's stated that if you don't know what cpu end users are using, then this should be used, but keep in mind that all the available choises that can be entered after -mtune are called cpu-type in the man, including e.g. i585, i686 and X86-64, even though they are cpu-families and hence imho generic isn't right for our choise where we do know the cpu-familly!
In short, they are saying that if you don't can use ANY of the available -mtune cpu-type/familly valyes, then generic is the way to go!
Now if we still use it, then it's stated to be for common i686 and x86-64 cpu's + under i686 it's stated to be the same as generic.
This means that if using -mtune generic without an -march, then the code will be using i386 instruction set, but tuned for best schedulling on common i686/x86-64 cpu's.
But, if additionally adding an -march in addition to the -mtune, then you override the i386 instruction set code with another value, like e.g. i686 or whatever, but nowhere does it state that you imposses or losses the restriction on the -mtune value, which is for scheduling and not instruction set and abi!...
-mtune are for processor scedulling without taking instruction sets into equation, whereas -march are specifically for instruction sets and abi, and i cannot find any place where it's stated that -mtune uses the -march value as minimum cpu schedulling-type. Instead there says that -march equals -mtune, but we then override that with adding another specific -mtune value!
I would like that we ditch -mtune, since that equals the same -mtune as our -march!.
Now if i thought that generic in our case would equal different x86-64 cpu's and no i686 cpu's,  i would also think that it would be fine, but i just don't think that based on the spec(man).
Sorry for blabbing on, but i just wanted to explain myself so as to ppl dosen't just think that i'm an idiot, but that i've actually given it some thought also...
I'll shut up now, as i haven't got any new arguments...

  • Bug related to ACPI

After update few weeks ago (cant say when exactly since i was testing where the problem is for few weeks) i noticed that sometimes computer would freeze during boot at sata recognition part right before daemons gets started. It would also hang during boot at loading daemons but i could make it resume if i press any keyboard key and sometimes it would hang several times before i would get Xfce to fully load. I found out that its related to ACPI, since when i turn it off i dont get error messages about it in log files. Turning ACPI off also fixed a strange bug where my keyboard is not repeating key strokes when i keep one key pressed, it starts to repeat but then stops after only few repeats and i need to keep pressing it to make it start repeating again, its also noticeable when i press tab to finish command and i see 1-2 sec delay. After i pass acpi=off at boot all of this goes away. I get same bug on both Arch linux x86 and x86_64.

  • Library name compatibility 32/64 bit and across platforms

    Hi all,
I have a numerical C library which I wish to link to using JNI. The binary will be shipped in the jar file to keep everything "clean" for the client.
Unfortunately the SUN System.mapLibraryName method is completely useless when it comes to bundling binaries that are specific to an architecture. Some tests I have performed show:
    Linux 64 bit Pentium M: os.name = "Linux", os.arch = "amd64", mapLibraryName = "libNAME.so"
    Linux 32 bit: os.name = "Linux", os.arch = "i386", mapLibraryName = "libNAME.so"
    iBook G4: os.name = "Mac OS X", os.arch = "ppc", mapLibraryName = "libNAME.jnilib"
    Windows XP 32 bit: os.name = "Windows XP", os.arch = "x86", mapLibraryName = "NAME.dll"
    Sun Blade 1500 (64 bit): os.name = "SunOS", os.arch = "sparc", mapLibraryName = "libNAME.so"
you will notice that Linux 32/64 and Solaris all use "libNAME.so"... despite the architecture they are running on! (Apple is not a problem because it supports Universal binaries).
I'm thinking that I will have to use some horrible library name and loading code to deal with these problems... creating library names along the lines of
    Linux 64 bit Linux: "libNAME-linux-intel-64.so"
    Linux 32 bit Linux: "libNAME-linux-intel-32.so"
Linux 32 bit PPC Linux: "libNAME-linux-ppc-32.so"
    iBook G4: "libNAME.jnilib"
    Windows XP 64 bit: "NAME-64.dll"
    Windows XP 32 bit: "NAME-32.dll"
    Sun Blade 1500 (64 bit): "libNAME-sunos-64.so"
My main concern is Linux and Windows 32/64 bit, rather than cross-CPU handling.
I am not looking forward to writing this... has this problem come up before? And if so, what have people done to deal with it? I guess an alternative would be to use a naming convention in the directory structure, but that's really the same solution.
    Kind regards,
    Sam

I have concluded that the best way to solve this problem is to create a pre-processing method for System.loadLibrary that takes the library name (as it would be passed to System.loadLibrary) and returns a more operating system and architecture-friendly String.
I have created a class that does OS/Architecture detection and then returns the following on various platforms for the input parameter "name":
Apple (G3, G4, G5, Intel): "name" (expects user to build Universal Binaries)
    Linux (i686): "name-linux-x86"
    Linux (Intel/AMD 64): "name-linux-x86_64"
    Linux (sparc): "name-linux-sparc"
    Linux (PPC 32 bit): "name-linux-ppc"
    Linux (PPC 64 bit): "name-linux-ppc_64"
    Windows XP/Vista (i686): "name-windows-x86"
    Windows XP/Vista (Intel/AMD 64): "name-windows-x86_64"
    Sun Solaris (Blade): "name-sun-sparc"
Sun Solaris (Intel 64 bit): "name-sun-x86_64"
This String can then be safely sent to System.loadLibrary, which will do the usual additions of "lib", ".so", ".jnilib" and ".dll" and search in all the right places. It is not possible to write a wrapper for System.loadLibrary itself as native library loading needs to know the name of the calling class.
I'd be happy to share the code with anyone who requests, but it's a bit too long to post here.
Incidentally... in my research into native library loading, I encountered the "Bundle-NativeCode" entry for Manifest files. It may be possible to construct an entry for each os.name/os.arch pair to assign native binaries accordingly. However it appeared that every pairing would need to be specified (whereas my solution is more forgiving), and I'm not entirely sure if that method allows one to define the (shortened form of the) library name... it may just be useful for bundling binaries inside the jar file.

  • How do i install arch on a old laptop

Hi i may need some help with this,
I obtained the latest installation cd and tried booting it, it gives me the following output:
This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.
How do i boot a boot the i686 kernel or should i use a old ISO?

The latest ISO should bring up a menu which lets you choose between i686 and x86_64. I just downloaded the ISO and tried it, the menu's there. Are you sure you have the latest ISO?

  • [SOLVED] New to Arch Linux, Need help in Installation.

    Hi,
I am  Ubuntu user for sometime, but I want to migrate to Arch Linux. I need some help. Please note that I am  not Linux Expert but I have been using Ubuntu and OpenSUSE for quite sometime now. The reason for deciding to migrate to Arch Linux is with I need speed.
    My laptop configuration is
Dell Vostro 1015 - Intel Dual Core 1.8 GHz  with 2 GB RAM.
I was using Ubuntu 64 bit version.
Here in Arch Linux, I find there are 3 options to download                i686 CPU,    x86-64 CPU,    Dual Architecture
Now which one should I download among x86-64 and Dual Architecture?
    Thanks.

Thank you all for welcoming me at Arch Linux!
I was bit worried at the beginning because I tried Fedora before but it has one bug because of which it does not get installed on my laptop.
    http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=255943
I was bit disappointed being not able to use Fedora (both 14 and 15 ) because of this bug.
The reason I got worried because I am new to Arch, as I mentioned I am not Linux expert and Arch is not for beginners( though I consider myself intermediate in Linux but certainly not expert). So I thought if I do not get community support probably I will not be able to use Arch Linux. The reason I got interest in Arch Linux is http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-k … he-process this article. I am not thinking of upgrading my laptop for speed anytime sooner. So I thought of trying Arch Linux.
The reason to post the topic was in most of Linux distros we see two options (x86, AMD_64). I found 3 options at Arch. I just wanted to make sure I am downloading right download.
So I hope I clarified it.
ANOKNUSA wrote:However, just for future reference: When engaging in any discussion with anyone anywhere on the internet at any time, it's often best to just leave experience and credentials out of the discussion.  I don't mean any offense myself, but claiming to be "in software development" while appearing unfamiliar with hardware architecture comes of as a bit odd.
You are right. I should not have have brought experience and credentials in discussion. I used to follow hardware architectures but now I have so many other things to follow, so I can not keep up with hardware architectures. I still do not know exact architecture of i3,i5 or i7 processor or any of AMD processors. Thats how it is.
I thank you all for support.
Looking forward to trying Arch Linux.
    Thanks

  • The new 64 bit iso does not install in vbox

I get this message in vbox
This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 cpu
    I have already Win7 64 bit and ubuntu64
    Any ideas ?

Did you try the VirtualBox site?  http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch03.h … 4bitguests
And the table on http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Guest_OSes says this about Arch,
Installation has to be booted with the ide-legacy option.

You created a 64-bit virtual machine, not just 32-bit right?
How would I create a 64-bit machine? I just created a new one based on Linux and Arch, assigned a hard disk and that's it. There was no possibility to set or define the architecture.
You may give me a hint.
do you have the VT-x extensions enabled in your BIOS? I think OEMs usually disable them by default
Can I check if VT-x is enabled during runtime? I think it should be enabled, but I'm not completely sure. And unfortunately I didn't find any setting in the BIOS of my Lenovo SL500.

  • Lame-3.96.1-2.pkg.tar.gz with MMX/3DNow!/SSE support

    Hi!
I may be a lamer, but the lame 3.96 version doesn't seem to be compiled with (asm) CPU optimalization. Or it just doesn't show during encoding. But if you have an i686 CPU, it has MMX support(?). So anyone who uses i686 can run MMX optimized progz. And lame has CPU recognition feature, so you can compile it with 3dnow, SSE ... support, it'll be run all Arch system. The same problem with XMMS mpg123lib mp3-decoder plug-in: It is compiled without MMX/3DNow optimization. You may say, that this is not important for mp3-playing, but if my CPU has cool 3dnow commands, I'd like to use it. (For mp3-encoding this is more important.) And all packages can be compiled with MMX support...:)
I didn't want to hurt you, this is my favourite distro, I just want to make it even better: so I may upload the mmx/3dnow enabled mpg123-plugin, if possible. I don't want to upload lame, because it's in original distro, so I upload gogo-no-coda instead.
    THX for Arch...:)
edited: Unfortunately it turned out that even not all i686 CPU have MMX commands eighter:(

First, SSE is not 686 specific as it was first introduced in the P3.
And while MMX and 3DNow use the same FPU registers, the instruction sets are different.
    To elaborate:
MMX was introduced in the original Pentium core, but only for integer operands (it was very very crappy), AMD built upon the MMX ISA and created 3DNow! for the AMD K6-2 which went over and above the MMX specifications.  However, 3DNow! is still backwards compatible with MMX.
In the Pentium 3 core, Intel introduced SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions, IIRC... and SIMD => Single Instruction, Multiple Data) which beat out AMD's 3DNow!.  Then, in the Athlon chipset, AMD added Enhanced 3DNow! which bested SSE instructions but was not compatable with it.... 3DNow! Professional (later Athlons) was fully backward compatable with SSE.  Finally the Pentium 4 introduced SSE-2 instructions (AMD was supposed to beat this again, last I checked.... not sure if it happened).
    The progression goes like this:
    MMX -----> 3DNow! -----> SSE -----> 3DNow! Professional -----> SSE-2 -----> ???
    | ^
    | |
    | |
    v |
    Enhanced 3DNow!
Each branch is fully backwards compatable with it's ancestors.
Seeing as MMX was the only one guarenteed to exist in ALL 686 cores (as it was introduced in the 586 line) and MMX is fully compatible with all existing Multimedia ISAs, it is the only one safe to include in Arch.
CONCLUSION: Enabling MMX is fine and should be done in multimedia applications (however, performance gains will be negligable on modern processors).  Anything beyond MMX is breaking compatiblity with all 686 cores.
I must point out that you will have no noticable difference in performance.  The MMX extensions were originally for DSP uses (which did include audio) however most compilers do not make direct use of these instructions, and even gcc would be leery about using these - the code structure would have to be specifically written to take advantage of MMX/SSE

  • Can you tell me the system requirements for arch please.

can you tell me the system requirements for arch please.

Enhu, welcome to the forums. Listing minimum requirements is pretty standard for most distros nowadays, and this being Arch, we expect you to do a minimum of effort to find out something like that. The wiki link is pretty clear on the memory, and since Arch is i686, any i686 CPU will do - something a search would have told you as well. This has been covered ad nauseam already.
Closing before we get any more attempts at trolling Windows.

  • Kvm-intel module broken after kernel upgrade 3.8.11-1 - 3.9.4-1

    Hey guys,
since todays update kvm is no longer working on my pretty old intel CPU.
I'm getting the usual from "qemu -enable-kvm":
KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x80000021
A downgrade to 3.8.11-1 made it work again.
I load the module as followed:
    modprobe kvm-intel emulate_invalid_guest_state=0
    Anyone having the same issue?

Also, you can rebuild the kernel package(linux and linux-headers) using the given patch
The problem mentioned by perseus, discussed in the topic Linux 3.15: WLAN regression on WRL54GL/B43
This method is slower and more difficult, but allows you to get the latest working kernel. You do not need to downgrade version of b43-firmware.
To do this you need to put the patch in a file called fix-b43-frequency-detection-bug.patch edit PKGBUILD as described below and rebuild the package.
