I7 17" shuts down and won`t reinstall with original Discs. HD failure?

hi ,,,first time post here .....thanks for any help .
My Macbook Pro 17" 7200 RPM 500 GB laptop is out of commision . I think it was running 10.6.7 but I can`t check anymore
I can`t get it to reinstall and I`ve already erased the HD in an attempt to get it to accept a clean install.
Here`s what I have . S/N C02CW0E9DC7C . Bought it june 2010
Started the curtain drop quitting  6 mos ago .
Apple repair (in Brasil) deemed it bad memory and replaced the memory ... returned it to me with the same problem .
I did the clean install myself at that time ... all good until it started quitting again a month ago.
Things got really bad with quitting and beachballing ...took it to a genius bar in NY ...
Diagnosis "Keys out of order"
They offered to reinstall the software (under applecare) but i decided to do it myself when I got off of the road allowing for a complete backup.
It then got so bad that it wouldn`t even start up ... maybe once in 7 tries I was able to get to my desktop.
I made it through some backing up and set about to do the clean install .....
here`s what happened
Here are the messages I got when I loaded the disc and tried to reinstall
message 1
"the contents of this disc can`t be changed
mac osx couldn`t be installed on this drive"
I clicked on disk repair and got this
message 2
"keys out of order HD could not be repaired
Disk utility can`t repair this disk"
I then erased the HD and tried to install the disc again .
This time it looked good for a minute ... the blue bar on the bottom went from "39 minutes remaining" to 33 minutes or so then quit with ...
message 3
"an error occured while installing Mac osx"
the screen went light blue and I waited a few minutes until the machine shut down by itself
I tried again and ...
message 4
"install failed "(with the yellow warning triangle)
"the installer could not copy the necessary support files
click restart to restart your computer and try again"
So .. I followed the prompt but when I clicked on restart ... the machine did nothing ... the mouse command was ignored.
I had to do a forced shutdown and restart the machine while pressing on the mousepad to get the disc to eject.
Now it powers up with a gray screen and a question mark .
Is it possible to diagnose this as a HD failure ?

In surfing ... I found this comment in another thread ...
Relevent ?
thanks, Paul
Why would I need a new HD when it worked fine one day and the only change was the attempted upgrade?
I am not an expert on this, but used to see a lot of posts about Norton Utilities killing Mac OSX HDs, and, iirc, "keys" was one of the issues. Apparently the directory can be damaged to the degree that it cannot be repaired, effectively rendering the HD useless.

  • My iPhone 4 shut down and won't turn on again. What should i do?

My iPhone 4 shut down and won't turn on again. I tried charging it and do it again...When i charge it , it opens the " Connect to iTunes" , when i switch to the computer to connect it , it doesn't work... It starts to the apple screen , and then just shuts down again. I tried holding the home and sleep/wake button at the same time..I tried everything. What should i do?

Your iPhone is going back and forth between recovery mode and powering on which is really strange.
Have you tried a hardware reset while its connected to your computer? This will force it back into recovery mode so that you can restore it. If restoring and setting up as new doesn't help, go ahead and take it to an Apple Store for a replacement

  • Adobe Reader is shutting down and won't open

Adobe Reader is shutting down and won't open, can i get some support?

    Some things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

Yes I've connected it to iTunes.. Reset the phone completely and synced phone again. It's also turned off twice today and when it comes back on its saying searching in the top left corner were your signal and network carrier should be?

my iphone 5s just shut down and won't reboot and just flashes the apple logo. Can anyone help?

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.
If this does not work, see if you can connect in recovery mode, explained in this aricle:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device

my IMAC seems to have died after power surge. It shut down and won't start.  What shall I do?

I would recommend you try an SMC reset at this point:
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
If that fails to solve it, it is probable that the power surge damaged some of your iMac's hardware components, and will need to be repaired at an Apple Authorized Service Center.

  • IPhone 5 shut down and won't turn back on

My phones screen turned a blue/greenish color and shut down and will not turn back on :(

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone5.  It just started yesterday afternoon.  The "hard reset" as you suggested worked once.  However, it shut down again only one hour later.  It didn't turn on (even with the hard reset) for three hours when the hard reset worked again.  I hooked it up to iTunes and restored my phone and thought that it would fix the issue.  But after being on for about two hours, my screen got vertical lines then turned green and shut off again.  I haven't been able to turn it back on no matter what I do all night and all day today.
It doesn't matter that the phone is plugged in or have 100% battery power.  It just won't turn on again.
I have an appointment at my local Apple Genuis Bar, but I'm not sure what they can do as I'm not sure if this is a software or a hardware issue.

  • When unplugged my MBP randomly shuts down and won't start up again

When my MBP is unplugged it randomly shuts off and won't restart. To get it to boot up again I have to plug it in.
Today I was using my computer for about 15 minutes unplugged and it just shut down by itself. I was right in the middle of typing something and it just cut out. The other weird thing is I don't get a low battery warning, nothing, it just shuts down.
Then I press the power button to restart and I get nothing. Even when I pull the battery out and put it back in nothing. I pressed the battery level button and it blinked rapidly on the lowest 2 lights. Keep in mind I was using my computer unplugged for only 15 minutes immediately after unplugging it from the wall after it had been charing for 15+ hours.
This makes no sense. Please help me.
    -Jacob

Sounds like a bad battery and/or problem with the PMU (power management unit) and/or memory.
"Half the start up sound" is a bad sign as it means it's failing the normal start up tests (I'd guess a Memory problem)
Reset the PMU and run the Hardware tests from Install DVD1 (hold down d at startup) and see what it reports.

  • G5 shuts down and won't restart when set to sleep

Twice in a row this has happened to me. I press the power button on the back of my G5 for the required duration to tell the computer to "sleep" and sleep it does - for a few minutes. Then next thing I know it has shut down and become totally unresponsive and no amount or combination of unplugging and repluging the AC supply and/or holding down the power button for up to a minute can force it to respond in any way nor restart.
The solution is to disconnect everything; remove the back of the G5 and press the reset button on the logic board - but sometimes the comuter will just randomly restart all on its own when powered up with its back off.
Can anyone suggest what might be going on here and whether it is a software or a hardware issue.

    Hi, Michael.
This sounds like hardware to me. Here's my list of general troubleshooting steps specific to the iMac G5 (you may have already seen #3, but it's included as it's part of my standard list):
    1. The first thing I would suggest is ruling out potential hardware problems. Run the Apple Hardware Test that came with the computer. Instructions for doing so will be found in the hardcopy manual that accompanied your computer.
    2. Check the diagnostic LEDs, a feature of your iMac G5. See "About the iMac G5 diagnostic LEDs."
    3. If your iMac G5 will not turn on, see "iMac G5: Troubleshooting when your computer won't turn on."
    4. See also the new iMac G5 Support site.
    5. Check the iMac G5 Discussions for similar reports from other users.
    6. As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. In your situation, I'd consider it a long shot, but it will determine if there are any issues with some "common troublemakers."
    7. If the computer is either under warranty or covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, don't hesitate to take advantage of your warranty and contact AppleCare.
    Good luck!

  • Laptop suddenly shuts down and won't open

Hello guys!   So I was using my laptop in my bed and suddenly, it shuts down and I don't know why. I thought it was low batt so I tried putting the charger but it won't charge. Please help me..

The "do something with the battery" you're referring to would be to unplug it for a minute. You can go to ifixit.com and get detailed instructions on how to do it for your model. The other thing I'd suggest, though I'm not sure it'll work with your machine in this condition, is to reset the SMC. You can try.

If your MPB is a 2009 or later, follow the "for a battery you should not remove" instructions.

  • MacBook randomly shut down, and won't turn back on

First of all, hello. Secondly, I've got a problem with my MacBook: about half an hour ago, it randomly shut down and when I tried to turn it back on, it didn't. Instead, the backlight kept flickering at the tempo that something inside the computer was "clicking", and the longer I held the power button, the more "clicks" there were. Needless to say, I've tried charging the battery, resetting the SMC, and to no avail: I still can't power it up, even when I don't use my battery. Whether I use it or not, the MacBook still "clicks" during my pressing of the power button and stops "clicking" when I release it. My MacBook is a year old. Can someone help me out here?

Me too. Any resolution? I don't want to take it to my local apple place because they're retards, but according to the info on my warranty that's the only place available. Can't believe they don't have an RMA service direct to Cupertino, what a joke.

  • My computer randomly shuts down and won't restart.

My computer randomly shut down and would not restart. I took it to an apple store and they fixed it by running something through the disk utility. I was told to run something else (it had to do with what the computer does when it shuts down as I don't shut mine down a lot). It had been running when the guy showed me it at the upper right corner and said "initializing" but I did not remember what it was called when I got home and it was no longer open. Any one have a similar problem where this was suggested and remembers what is it called?

    Try a SMC reset.
