I7 3820 vs. 3939

Hi
I run CS6 on an i7 3820 with 16 gb ram.
I am considoring an upgrade to 3930, but I am a bid unsure if it's worth the extra money?
Any thoughts on this is would be really apreciated.
Thanks. :)
Ulf

Thanks Eric
Can I ask you one more thing then. In the same PC I have the Geforce 570 card. Would it be worth the extra money to upgrade to the 680 too?
Thanks a lot

  • X79-GD65 (8D) and i7 3820 issues

    Hello members
    I recently purchased a MSI X79-GD65 (8D) motherboard and an Intel i7 3820 CPU.
I have installed 4 sticks of 16GB memory.
When I turn the computer on, everything looks normal on the motherboard, except I get no video (have tried two video cards).
The CPU phase LED shows 3 bars, no digits on the debug motherboard LCD.
I have noticed that it is impossible to turn the power off and the PSU needs to be switched off.
From what I am reading it seems I have an old BIOS, (the chip has a red dot) and this is incompatible with the 3820.
I was wondering if anybody knows a workaround to allow me to get into BIOS to reflash the chip.
The fact that the BIOS chips are surface soldered doesn't help either.
    Any ideas appreciated.

    it is dead to me.
there are some serious key flaws with MSI.
Why is the BIOS chip soldered surface mount, if BIOS are always outdated, why not install a socket BIOS chip, this would then be a very straight forward fix
Why do I need a CPU installed to flash my BIOS, ASUS has this feature on their motherboard, this could easily be fixed in this case
The RMA website for Australia is non functional, try navigating http://au.msi.com/service/wheretobuy/ you get a JavaScript error.
I reread the manual which points to the url http://www.msi.com/service/cpu-support (which doesn't even work because of the missing trailing forward slash) and it pointed to the url http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X79A-GD65--8D-.html#/?div=CPUSupport.
Nothing on that page even hints there may be incompatibility issues.
    Not a good experience

  • Cannot add HP Deskjet 3820 printer

We have been using an HP Deskjet 3820 printer with an iMac forever with no problems. The printer is connected from the printer parallel port to the USB port on the computer using an adapter cable. Last time we tried to print the print job stopped in the middle of printing. Occasionally this would happen in the past but if I deleted the printer and then added it back everything was fine. Now, though, when I try to add the printer under the USB heading, I get a question mark, the printer name, and "driver not installed". I have tried reinstalling the software that came with the printer, and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my system software - all with no change. HP is really no help except to tell me that a talk with a tech will cost me $30 or I can buy a new printer. The weird thing is that I can print a test page, so there is some communication between the computer and printer, but I can't actually install it to print from within an application.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Try:
    Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for files that start with com.apple.print (File>Find) and delete them.
Restart the Mac. Try adding in Print Center again.

  • I7-3820 OC Automatically Resetting?

I am 'attempting' to OC my i7-3820 / MSI X79A-GD45 Plus by just increasing the multiplier/CPU Ratio from 36 to 42 but am running into something strange. At first I was upping the BLCK to 1.25 and the Multiplier to 37 but after upping the voltage consistently it still failed to boot. So I resorted to just keeping the base BLCK at 1 and putting the ratio at 42. It successfully booted time after time, the lowest CPU Voltage I tried was 1.32.
    BUT
For some reason it seems to not be maintaining the OC once I boot it up. The first time I ran it, the voltage was at 1.41 and it booted successfully. Intel burn test came back stable and CPU-Z came back with the agreeing figure of 4200 MHz for the CPU. After going back and attempting to lower the voltage, it still successfully booted but for some reason the CPU-Z report came back with the base 36-3700 MHz reading. Is there any reason why this would be happening? I can't seem to find any reason as to why it would be automatically resorting back to the original settings.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

It's preferred and recommended if you do CPU/RAM stuff in the BIOS itself, not Command Center.
Also, I think it's waste of time for OC Genie as it's not always working and not for everyone. Just make standard OC in BIOS and get on with it
And yes, PC restart is usually required when changing multipliers/bclk and other stuff.

  • Intel releases Core i7-3820 processor

Intel i7-3820 is built on Sandy Bridge-E core, a variation of Sandy Bridge core that sports large 10 MB or greater L3 cache, and integrated quad-channel memory controller. The chip has 4 CPU cores, clocked at 3.6 GHz, and 10 MB of last level cache. The 3820 supports most of Sandy Bridge features, including Turbo Boost, that can bump core frequency up to 3.9 GHz when necessary, and Hyper-Threading technology, which doubles the number of threads, processed by the CPU at the same time. The i7-3820 doesn't support business-oriented technologies, such as Trusted Execution. The CPU has 130 Watt Thermal Design Power. Intel i7-3820 is priced at $294, which is considerably lower than the prices of Core i7-3930K and Core i7-3960X Sandy Bridge-E microprocessors.
So what will you buy: I72700 OR I73820????

"The 3820, like all current LGA 2011 CPUs, hits an overclocking brick wall of around 4.7GHz with air cooling"
What are you talking about?? Have you try this your selft? In which  x79 MB? And Which air cooling???
"(even after raising the BCLK from the default 100MHz to 125MHz)"
My guess is BCLK will be manual and the ideal is to use the tasted 100MHZOriginal, 125MHz, 133MHz and 166Mhz. as it is for the 3930.
"As a result, the 3820 is not sufficiently faster than a 2600K or 2700K to justify the $100 to $150 additional cost of the CPU/motherboard combo (since the least expensive worthwhile X79 mobo costs $100 to $150 more than a good Z68 mobo)."
    The 3820 @ 4.8 ghz, 10MB Cache, 64gb ram, 4chanell DDR3. I guess will do better tham 2700k.
    That is my opinion...

Just curious. Was this a self purchased off the shelf retail mainboard & VGA's? What was the 'as shipped' UEFI/BIOS version? My BB X II LE arrived DOA, & no green stickers on the BIOS chips to determine the version installed, although, a 3930k C1 should be supported from the original release. A 3820 needs v1.2 installed to be fully supported.

You can only lower the multiplier on non-k version Intel CPU's.
Judging by your post, you probably didn't know that.
Unfotuantely I have to correct that i7 3820 (like all socket 2011 i7 cpus) is unlocked. Only Xeon cpus for 2011 are not.
andrea.montis.pitti, here is an example of oc with the i7 3820. Make sure to disable power saving features like C-State.

  • X79A-GD65(8D) with i7-3820 weak overclock.

Hello again. It was a long time ago i was here and i thought i could drop in here for a little discussion.
I'm trying to overclock my CPU to a cool 5GHz as i once did with crazy voltages everywhere before i knew better, anyway i cant get it stable today with safe voltages, not even reasonable BCLK's or anything.
I cant get over 105MHz even at VCore at 1.44v SA at 1.2, PLL at 1.95 with all turbo functions and EIST turned off...
Anyway, i can forward you some links to some pictures.
What i would like is some tips for getting a stable OC.... I've seen people on the net who has like 130MHz BCLK and 37x multi but i don't know how they go it stable.
    Now i'm running 105MHz BCLK with a 43x multi.

And a picture of the CPU settings page

I would be glad if knowing people could give tips and tricks about how to stabilize CPU at higher BCLK's so i can use the multiplier to get to 5GHz if possible.
Why you might ask, well simply to have done it. Once i've got there (if possible) i'll downclock to around 4GHz or even stock maybe since the CPU has never bottlenecked or ever will in any forseable future.
To start i've put together a list of different voltages for raising the question about what its maximum recomended setting is(Preferably with the Intel i7-3820) and what they might be called on the MSI board or if it's event possible to change the value for it.
    VTT
    PLL
    VVC
    VSA
    PCH1.1
    PCH1.5
Thats all the voltage settings i could think of exept DRAM voltages.
And as a little off topic adventure slightly connected to this cpu/socket, i've heard rumors both here on Swedish sites and other that a Ivy Bridge-E will be marketed around the time that Haswell(Which i suppose is a Ivy development and not a whole new architexture) comes out.

    Hi flobelix.
Okay, that sounds weird. I have a memory of me getting to 5GHz and discussing it on a forum where they said i was going to degrade my circuits really fast since i used crazy voltages everywhere, I have a feeling it was on this forum in a kind of "laid-back" sub-forum.
But i cant seem to find any threads other then a memory issue thread some months back when my system was new. You and a few other forum-elites helped me aswell. Getting a bit scared now.
Anyway it does feel like running through a brick wall with the Bclk. I can set my strap to 1.0, 1.25...
Do you or anyone have any tips or tricks on what i should test and change?
EDIT: I have to roam the streets of google and look through the deepest parts of the internets to unveil this mystery.
    EDIT2: Mein got! I've found it https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=161657.0

    cpu:
idle, 21-28c (a bit strange core 0 and 3 are several c higher, remounted block and paste 2 times with no different result, so It just cant get better:( )
    Load, 45-55c
So, there´s room for good oc:ing
Gpu (here I know what to do with all settings)
    idle, 21
    load, 28.. hell yeah:)
    Now the cpu q:s
Haven´t been overclocking since the s478 platform and all I had to do then was cranking up the fsb and select a good ram divider (and maybe some cpu voltage)
so, is there anything special with this X79 platform? or just simple tampering with hmmm.. bclk(fsb) and ram freq. and maybe som voltage tweaking? I´m hoping to get an stable clock around 4,7-5+ (for 2h a day, it´s only a gamingsetup)
And I wonder how my Corsair HX850 will hold up with all the oc?
Tips an maybe a complete setting scheme?
    Thanx in advance!

It looks like it is closer to 4.4 than 4.3 with a reported 4399.89. Unless you want to lose all the power saving features, do not take CPU V. out of Auto. If bclk 106 is stable, I would say it is OC'd to a reasonable level with power saving still intact. As for graphics card tweaking, I leave all mine at reference, only so many FPS the human mind and eyes can detect, and will leave that for others to advise.
As for the RAM, again, once the CPU OC is confirmed stable, try DRAM Freq. at 1600 and see what happens. Not sure of what the DRAM V. by the manufacturer is suggested for 1600 speed, but probably will need to increase the DRAM V. up some, but not exceeding 1.65v's. SA V. probably 0.965v's, I/O V. to around 1.1v's.
Yepp it reports more n more 44, but decreased it to 43 anyway!
But 106 seems no longer stable, was stable a couple of hour bencmarking, playing etc. then I turn it off for 2-3 hours! and now it frteezez without any load at all!  why is that?  (went down to 100 again) so runninbg 4.3 now!
But I want more, preferrably 5Ghz, based om my temps with IBT(max test) reaching only 50 celcius! can live with 70c.. how do I get there? (mem, comes later)

  • MSI GD65 X79 - INTEL 3820 / 3970 ISSUE

I HAVE A SERIOUS ISSUE NEED HELP .
got a brand new msi x79 gd 65 , for some reason the board does not supprt the intel 3820 cpu - its stuck on the debug screen showing error 09 ...
i think its a bios issue as the mother board is on a earlier bios and does not support the cpui --so how do i boot so i can update the bios .
i also have a 3970k cpu but i am afraid thats also not supported by this earlier bios -
please help -as what i should do --i cant get a earlier model 3930k / 3960x now --
the same problem occured on the intel dx79to motherboard --same error 09 on the debug screen --system would turn on / off / and did the same thing .
how do i update the bios if the damn thing would not let me go ahead in to the bios for flashing .......

There should be a way to flash the BIOS using at least the 3970X.
The 3820 models have major internal changes compared to the other models. This decreases the possibility of those CPUs working without a BIOS update.
The 3970X however will work if you manage to reset the BIOS settings. The clear CMOS button on the back of the board is handy in that case. After connecting the CPU and the other necessary components you'll just have to turn your power supply on, press the clear cmos button and (while keeping this button pressed) press the power button. Then wait 5-10 seconds and press the power button again to turn the system on.
If the system doesn't work after that then it's a good idea to try using only the basic components (1 memory stick, the gpu, mouse, keyboard, storage drive). If it still doesn't work then you might want to try another GPU (some newish cards were not compatible with older bios versions).
After that you'll be able to update the BIOS chips for 3820 support. Good luck

  • I7 3770K vs i7 3820 - Video Card suggestion?

My use : 90% Photoshop / LightRoom , 5% Premiere , 5% other, do NOT game at all.
    Hi Guys,
My Budget for CPU is around $300-350 , what do you guys recommend? 2011 socket or 1155 that can be over clocked?
I have another problem with Graphic card, I want to have 2 monitors and a TV (3 total) now from what i understand Nvidia cards only support 2 out and ATI cards dont play nice with Premiere, considering my budget on Video card is around 250$ , do you guys suggest, i go with Nvidia and 1 monitor + TV, ATI and since i dont use Premiere  TOO MUCH its ok? or any other option i am missing? for nVidia i was thinking GTX 570, good choice?  ATI i got no idea ! any recommendation is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your help.

I'm going with the 2011 socket for my own build, but I've noticed that the costs involved with that platform are higher overall, as it is considered a higher "bracket." Be warned that Ivy Bridge processers (which all go on LGA 1155) such as the 3770k you are considering don't overclock nearly as well as Sandy Bridge does/did. Despite this, I hear that the 3770k is still a nice CPU, and will likely give you quality performance even without overclocking. The 3830 is currently the only 2011 socket processor in your price range; the next step up leaps both in performance and cost - the $500+ range.
5xx (Fermi) series cards can only run 2 monitors, correct. However, the 6xx series Kepler architecture cards can simultanously run up to 4 displays (3 if in 3D).
With a $250 budget, I would recommend looking at the GTX 660. Performance wise, it will sit a little lower than the GTX 570, but it has the advantages I mentioned above. Otherwise, if you are willing to stretch the wallet a little bit, the GTX 660 Ti is a fantastic performer for $275-300 and is arguably better than the 570, plus improvements in power consumption and heat dissipation.. (Note that the cards I linked to are not recommendations for a specific card per se, I just grabbed the currently top rated card from each model at Newegg).
    Hope that helps,
    Kristofor
