I7 CPU Question

Hi Everyone,
I've been reading these forums for quite awhile and taking in all the great advice and answers.  I now have a question regarding processors.  I understand the opinion that under the current price points, the i7 920 is a superior buy than the 940.  Because the hefty price differences don't justify the limited gain one gets with the 940.  My question is this, Frys has the 940 on sale for about $330 and currently the price I see on the 920 on places like newegg is $280.  Given the $50 difference is it worth it to buy the 940 or is overclocking the 920 still the way to go? (I'm not worried about spending the extra 50 bucks, but more curious if I should).  I picked one up since they stopped production on them and quantities were limited, but I have two weeks to return it.
I'm going to build a new computer over the next couple of weeks, and then plan on swapping out the cpu when the new versions come out later this year and drop in price (assuming they are compatible with the x58 motherboard, which I believe I read they would be).  But for now, I need a faster setup than my Q6600, 64 bit vista, 8 GB.  The rendering times on some of my projects are killing me.
I primarily work in Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects, both CS4 versions.  Most of the videos I create are either industrial for DVD / Web or web videos created with green screen.  I also make short films for film festivals.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Take care,
David

That Fry's ad is a day behind in my East coast area.  $329.99 is a super deal.  Fry's also has a Cooler Master case, Elite 341 Mid Tower on sale for $14.99 after a $10 mail-in rebate.  This case is listed on Newegg.com for $50.
While I was at Fry's yesterday I saw a computer with a large LED touch screen. I did a search for a hi-def *WMV on this system. The playback was amazingly vibrant and sharp on the clip that I found.
I wonder if an LED would be a good choice for a video editing reference monitor. I noticed in the TV section at Fry's that the Samsung 55" LED's have a picture so sharp and clear that motion picture level special effects look less realistic.

  • Quarterly CPU question from a rookie

Question qualifier: I am not a trained or experienced DBA, I have however been thrown under the Oracle bus to set up a Patch and Vulnerability Management program for the Oracle servers.
Question: Are the quarterly CPUs cummulative? In other words, does each quarterly CPU include the patches from the previous quarterly CPU?
If not, I would like to clarify theire installation order.
The CPUs MUST BE installed in the released sequence to make sure that all vulnerabilities are covered.
    a. This is correct. The patches have to be installed in the released order.
    b. This is the official position, but in reality it is not that strict.
    c. It doesn't matter as long as all the patched are applied.
    d. What is a CPU?
I thank everyone in advance for your help.
    Jonathan

All these questions are answered in Note 360470.1 (FAQ)
Basically, CPU patches are security patches likes the ones released by other vendors sent at predefined intervals to contain a list of fixes based on bugs or issues found. They are usually not cumulative (the answer depends on which Oracle product you are referring to).
About the official position?.. Treat as strongly recommended.

  • Oracle CPU question with 11.5.10 CU2

Just a general question. First time trying to apply an Oracle CPU and in this case applying the July 2010 CPU to our Test E-biz 11.5.10 CU2 RUP7 install.
My configuration is RH Linux ES 4.8 with a 10.2.0.4 database server running admin, db and CCM services and then an app server running forms and web services.
I'm referring to "Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 11i and 12 Critical Patch Update Knowledge Document (July 2010) [ID 986534.1]" and then the subsequent articles that follow that.
    My questions are:
Q1. My database level is currently 10.2.0.4. It would appear my steps are first update Opatch (no problem there).
    Then apply 9032412.
Then it looks like I apply either CPU Patch 9655017, or PSU Patch 9654991.
    But PSU 9654991 REQUIRES PRE-REQUISITE 10.2.0.4.4 so I can't apply that right?
I will apply 9655017 instead and will that get me to 10.2.0.4.5?
Q2. My configuration is DB Tier with CCM and an app Tier running forms, reports as mentioned.
Do I have to worry about the Fusion Middle-ware stuff?
Q3. Patches to apply to E-Business Suite.
Looks like 9578142 applies to my environment.
Check the pre-reqs to ensure I have anything that needs to be applied first.
Then depending on what modules we use or have installed (does it make a difference) I'll apply subsequent patches say for 'Financials'.
Q3. Anything else I need to consider? We are patching Test first and when done if it's all good we'll schedule Prod.
I realize this is a pretty generic question. My main uncertainty is on the db 10.2.0.4 patch and if the 965517 will get me to 102045 or not.
Update - My first patch is giving me the OUI-67620 superset error which I believe is telling me the new patch contains all the fixes from the existing patch so ok to proceed. Right?

  • New W530 CPU question

    Happy holidays all...
I ordered a W530 to replace my W510 and I have a question regarding the config. The machine I ordered is as follows:
    Processor
    Intel Core i7-3920XM
    Operating system
    Windows 7 Professional 64
    Total memory
    8 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 (2 DIMM)
    Hard drive
    500GB HDD 7200rpm
    Video
    NVIDIA Quadro K2000M 2GB
I was tossed between ordering the i7-3920 and the i7-3820QM and would like to know if there is a meaningfull difference in performance between both CPU's as it relates to running multiple virtual machines and heavy CPU dependant games like Microsoft FSX.
I'd also like to know if the W530 is better at managing cooling than the W510, especialy under heavy workloads.

    Not sure about the W530.
The W520 uses a different (and more noisy!) fan for the XM processor - since the XM draws 10W more power.

  • Cpu questions

    I am buying a 27 inch iMac.
Main use is tv and dvr. I don't save the shows for long so I can use the 1tb hdd.
My real question is How much difference in the cpu's? I read the i7 is fastest and can hyper thread to allow the machine to think it has more then 4 cores. It is 2200 if I buy the i7.
I see the quads have the better video card as stock.
So if I buy the 3.06 it is 1850 after the video card upgrade.. so do I need to spend the 350 extra for the cpu upgrade?
I figure If I buy the base model I am using it with the better graphics card. Is anyone using the 27inch model with a 3.06 cpu and the graphic card upgrade? I think my model will have the screen fix
(yellow -flicker) done by the time I order.
How hot is the 3.06 vs the i7? Any input will help me to decide.. 1850 is a boatload of cash for me to spend. 2200 is worse but I need the 27inch all in one. Thanks

    Hi Philip,
The 27 inch i7 is a very fast CPU is very fast I use it Final cut studio 3 and its a beast, it is very fast, I could tell you this its a fantastic computer I got it with 4 gigs of ram and just upgraded from i5, to the i7 I think its worth the extra bucks, go directly to apple store and see if they have i7 on stocks because they are fantastic machine I love it, I am satisfied with my computer, but don´t get overwhelmed with reading about the negative points of the machine there are a few here that are making a good rant about it. But if I was you I would go get it at the apple store that way you know what your getting and if your not so sure about the machine; boot it up at the store. But for video and heavy duty processing this machine is very fast, as I type this to you I am rendering a final cut pro movie its going to take me 4 min to get it done.
I also would suggest that you get 8 gigs if you want to open lots of programs, and do heavy processing.
    Hope this might of help.

  • 770-C45 Motherboard and CPU question

I have referred to the CPU compatibility chart for this motherboard and my question is in regards to the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU. I see other 965 CPU's listed as compatible. I realize that this CPU is 140 watts. Is this a problem. Could someone please clarify this for me.
    Thanks for your time

thanks for the assistance, I have decided to go with a 955 instead of a 965.
I also read the Memory sticky and it said to look for AMD tested RAM. I am using tigerdirect.ca and dont see any RAM that says it has been specifically made for an AMD. Currently I am looking at  Kingston PC10600 1333MHz 4GB DDR3 (KVR1333D3K2/4GR). I only plan to use 2 as per the guide. Any suggestions.
Thanks for clearing up my earlier question.

  • HELP ! CPU question on MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI Motherboard

    Hello i've a simple Question : Does A64 3400+ S939 works on this board ?

    Hi douglasp,
    Things haven't changed since K8N Neo4 Platinum SLI + athlon 64 3400+ ????
There is no AMD64 3400 939 CPU - see AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Model Numbers and Feature Comparison
754 CPu are single channel compatable withK8N Neo Platinum
939 CPu are Dual channel. compatable with K8N Neo4 Platinum
as someone said in previous thread it's probably a misprint.

  • Another memory/cpu question/s

I have searched the forums, and the links everyone has posted , and i cant find a answer to a few questions i have !
#1: I have seen nothing on what brand ram would work using 2-1gb in dual channel ,on the k7n2-Delta , all the tests/talk has been using 512 or smaller ,any ideas??
#2 : Can I run pc3200-400fsb memory (1gbx2) with a 333fsb Athlon-XP-3000+ , and will it lessen or gain performance by doing so??
#3 : What is the highest CPU(socket A) that i can use on the k7n2-Delta(would a  3200+ etc work ?) or am i limited to the 3000+ ,as i seem to get that feeling from some posts i have read , or if it will work would i be better off getting a 3200+-400fsb along with pc-3200 1gbx2 (refer to #2)
The reason im asking these questions is i want to add more ram (currently at 1gb and want to use 2gb ) but im not sure which brand would even work as i have seen nothing posted about using 2gb in dual channel and only a few manufacurers offer 1gb sticks ,let alone a matched set for dual channel, and i am unsure of the REAL limitations of this board and weather i would notice a difference by adding 400fsb ram while still using the 333fsb cpu , then if needed later swapping out my 333fsb cpu for a 400fsb cpu of the same speed or higher , or leaving it as is ,or if i can even do the upgrade i want to do to this board !......any help would be appreciated!!!!

well i tried the board with a barton XP3200 and a Corsair value kit 2x512mb PC3200..
didn't work well.. it froze half of the time.. when playing games... it the texture flickers..
I went to the salesman and changed my RAM to Kingston PC3500 (i know it want work at fsb433!) but underclocking is always good.. still didn't work...
it seems like its incompatibility... and the board seems to be really picky... MSI motherboards are really stabil... but to be picky? comeon... why didn't MSI made it compatible with the best ram out there...
why is it only running most of the ram on PC2700?
i suggest on finding another board if u like ur current ram and it doesn't make any errors in memtest... or check the list for compatible ram in one of the thread here..

  • New D20, Windows 7/Vista can't see hard drives - also 2nd CPU questions

I just got a new D20 and aded a few 1TB Samsung hard drives to the WD one that came with it.  I can see the drives fine in both the Marvell BIOS RAID setup utility (even ran a Verify Disk on them with no errors) and from the ThinkStation BIOS and even from a Linux-based utility that I used to partition and format them with.  But neither Windows 7 RC nor Vista x64 Ultimate can see any of the drives and when I try to load drivers fro the driver CD that came with it, they aren't recognized or loaded.  Probably there is a simply BIOS setting I've screwed up but it has me stumped.  Any clues?
Also the machine came with one dual-core E5502 CPU.  If I want to add a 2nd CPU does it also have to be the same as the 1st or can I add a quad-core E5504 or even a higher speed quad-core as long as it is a LGA1366? Does it have to be a Xeon or would an i7 work?
    Many thanks in advance!

    welcome to the forum!
sounds like that D20 arrived in one piece.
the latest marvell driver for vista 64 can be found here.   i suggest trying that first to make sure this isn't a driver issue.   also check that you have the intel chipset and matrix storage drivers installed.   they can be found here.
check the BIOS and see if the AHCI mode is set to SATA RAID.   i can't remember the exact path to this setting right now but can reboot and write it down if you get lost.
on the processor, the second one does have to match the first unless you replace the first completely and install two new chips.   an i7 might work as a single processor in socket 0 (this is untested so i cannot confirm).   however, you'll need two xeons if you want to run two physical processors.
i suggest reading the following links for reference:

  • Photoshop CS4 CPU Question...

    Hello,
I hope everyone had happy and safe holidays. Welcome to 2009.
I have a friend with a Pentium 4 system and she wants to run Photoshop CS4
Extended on it. Right now it only has 1GB of ram and while she plans to buy
a new system later this year, she would like to use the one she has now. She
can install another 1GB of ram, however the system requirements for PSCS4E
only states a 2GHz or faster processor. It doesn't state a minium specific
    kind of processor.
So my question is will Photoshop CS4 Extended run on a fast Pentium 4
machine with 2GB of RAM, Windows XP Pro?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Bob, the problem is without knowing if it will install and run she doesn't
want to spend the money on the ram. Since Adobe doesn't state with the
requirements anything more than "2GHz or faster processor" and since a
friend of mine wasn't able to install until he added 2GB of ram to his
system we both want to make sure that it will install on a P4. Once we know
that she can then decide if she wants to spend the money on the extra ram.
If it won't install on a P4 (the installer like with the less than 2GB of
RAM won't let it) then buying the extra ram is moot and would be a waste of
    money.

  • ATI/CPU Questions

I have RCT3 and my Aspyr Game Agent says that the game wouldn't work on my comp because it said that my, Video card was Radeon 7500 instead of 9000. I checked my profiler and clicked Extensions. I looked at my Video Cards and it said I had ATI Radeon 9700, but it wasn't loaded. The game, however, worked fine. My problem was that, I was planning on buying the Sims 2 by Aspyr for Mac and it said the same thing. So whenever I look at my system profiler and it says that a certain extension is not loaded but its there, does it mean it doesn't work? Also, for the Sims 2, I was told that you could play a game with a CPU speed thats lower than the requirement. Is that true? And does it also go for Video Cards?
    Thanx a lot.
    eMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Keep in mind Aspyr game agent tells you recommended specs. For example it said I couldn't run Call of Duty with my old card (I have upgraded, but that was to get a Quartz Extreme enabled video card), but it ran fine.

  • Quicksilver CPU questions

I have another Quicksilver 2002 in storage that has no CPU. It was a single CPU model. Does the dual CPU drop right in, or are the boards different between them? I don't see a difference visually except for the chip.
Also, does 10.5.4 work okay on a Quicksilver? Anyone found a way to put Snow Leopard on an older Mac yet?
    Thanks

    Hi-
    All QS processors are interchangeable.
The heatsinks, however, are more processor specific, especially with dual processors.
Other than that, any processor from one QS is plug and play in another QS.
Leopard works just fine on a dual 1.0 GHz QS. I run 10.5.8 on my DP 1.0 GHz and three 933 MHz QS machines.
Snow Leopard will never happen on a PPC Mac.
When running Leopard, a Core Image supporting graphics card is highly desirable.

  • Quick CPU question

I'm thinking of upgrading my AGP Powermac from the stock 500mhz to something a bit better. I'm not planning on spending more than $100 (not to much money to start with) and was wondering if it's possible to put in one of the other Sawtooth or Quicksilver CPUs. I've seen some rather cheap CPUs on ebay before.
    Thanks for looking

    Hello InuNacho,
You can overclock to 600mhz fairly easily; chap on eBay sells altered CPUs and seems to know what he's doing. Cost is usually less than $100 (your risk, of course) but the improvement is not earth-shaking.
Other World Computing is currently offering - as specials - Sonnet, Mercury, and Newer(brand) CPUs in 1.0, 1.2, and 1.4mhz sizes all for (slightly) under $200. Improvement should run from earth-moving to earth-shaking.
If your uni-n number is copasetic, you can replace your single 500mhz with a dual 500mhz processor. Most likely it is not, but it doesn't cost to see. Go to the Sonnet or OWC web sites and search for dual CPU requirements, then follow the prompts. The improvement is worthwhile, but not earth-shaking. Used Apple dual CPUs are available from time to time on eBay for less than $100.

  • 6337 lite cpu question

My brother gave me his old computer, it is a pentium III with a 6337 lite mb - there is one vacant ram bank or slot left that I wanted to fill, but the cpu's clamp sticks out over the slot and appears low enough to objstruct the ram chip.  I would like to know if this is a real problem or if I am just ignorant of the proper solution.  Thank you for any help.

Yes, and it wouldn't get past the clip.  I didn't want to really force the ram in though, because I ruined a mb once by doing that.  Removing the cpu fan, and then raising the latch(or clip) seemed like the only solution - but the latch appears low enough to possibly do some damage to the ram when clamped back down.
