I7 in 15 inch or 17?  for photography. . . .

So my problem is I am trying to decide which to order, a 15 or 17 inch in the i7.
I have had a PowerBook G4 for about 4 years and need to upgrade as this is too slow with the larger files I now work with.
I use Leica, which uses the SD card and my Canon equipment uses CF cards. So the 15 has the SD reader built in, nice but would have preferred an express card slot. So the 17 has the Express card slot but is also larger. I wouldn't mind the greater real estate but when working in the field I am not sure how the 17 would do as size and weight counts when traveling especially with all the restrictions now.
I am also wondering about the true speed of the readers and if it would be as effective to use a fire wire reader, which I do now (800), or would the express card be much faster? So there are a few questions I am trying to answer. Size, weight, and functionality.
My last work was in China in some remote areas and we where there for 1.5 years. B oth macs we have had to be sent in for repair while there, which was frustrating but it happnes.
This is my web site of visual and natural history photography: www.pbase.com/jamato8
Thank you for any ideas and input.

You take some very nice photos, John. Only you can decide if the extra real estate is worth the increased size of a 17". That's a lot of laptop. Regarding the Express card slot on the 17"... would you be using it with an eSata card to backup photos to an external hard drive? From a card reader perspective I don't know if anything faster than a FW reader exists and the Macs come with a FW800 port. Just curious as to how you'll use the Express card functionality as part of your workflow?

    Hi a,
    http://www.mctiviausa.com/
There has been "talk" on and off of Apple TV doing it (and people have done it with a hack), but I haven't really followed it.
It would be a whole lot cheaper getting an adapter (as needed) and cable and simply pluggin it in when you're in the kitchen.

Possibly if your company has an agreement with Apple and the machine is purchased through the company. Otherwise, no.

  • Montior/display calibration for photography?

What is the best way to go about calibrating my MacBook display to give me accurate color representation while working with my photographs? When I get them printed, they don't look as good as they do on my screen.
All the tutorials for monitor calibration for photography purposes I can find have been for Windows.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Dave

    Hi Dave.
Well, if you want to get really professional, a good idea is to buy some calibrating hardware. Pantone's Huey does a really nice job according to MacAddict magazine (now Mac l Life magazine).
    http://www.electronics-batteries.com/digitalcamera_accessories_pantonemeu101.htm
If you want to go the "free" route, you can generally calibrate the display through the displays system preferences pane in System Preferences. Just click on the "displays" pane and then click on the color tab. You can then create a custome color profile by following the on-screen instructions.
    Hope this helps.

  • Just need 1/8 inch to RCA for digital coax out with audigy se right?

DJust need /8 inch to RCA for digital coax out with audigy se right? Hi there,
I need a low profile soundcard that can deli'ver digital 5. through either coax or optical, looks like the audigy se will do just that. I have a yamaha receiver with DTS, DD, etc with a coax input that I want to use. I want to confirm that all I really need is a cable that has an /8 inch plug for the blue digital out on the soundcard with an RCA end for my receiver.... sounds simple enough to me but I want to make sure. I know I can get the digital I/O module but don't see a point if I just need the cable I mentioned.
    Thanks.

Let's take Battlefield 242 for example. The game will not allow me to specify hardware sound.
That would be because that card DOES NOT have any hardware on it, it is a totally software dri'ven card.
And yes your old Li've card is much better than the Audigy SE. The Audigy SE is nothing more than a re-named SB Li've 24 bit, which is also a software based card (same applies to the X-Fi Xtreme Audio, a POS card that should have never been given the X-Fi name).

  • What Mac Pro specs should I consider for photography?

After years of putting up with various pc configurations, I've decided to take the plunge and go over to a Mac Pro system.
I have up to £4000 to invest on a system to use primarily for my work as a photographer. But which areas should I concentrate on when configuring my set-up? Given that Photoshop seems happy to suck up as much memory and processing power as one can throw at it, a sizeable amount of RAM and a decent speed of processor appears obvious. But how much RAM and what size processor, bearing in mind that my image file sizes are usually around the 300Mb mark and often go as high as 700Mb when containing unflattened layers? These file sizes have rendered my supposed powerful Dell to performing at a snails pace. Also, what else should I consider in my configuration?
My image library is stored on a separate drive, so I could probably live with a reduced hard drive capacity if necessary.
Incidentally, I am far from being a computer boffin, so I'd appreciate advice which isn't overly technical.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm in the UK and I use my Mac Pro for Video and Photography and I've had a few Mac Pro's getting to my ideal solution. If you are only using it for Photography I think you would be fine with 8Gb of RAM but if you fill out all 8 slots with 2Gb modules from Crucial it's not too bad to go to 16Gb. My advice would be to run the Mac Pro on a large Western Digital Caviar Black (their quickest) such as the 2Tb model. Then, I'd invest in a Tempo SATA card so you can purchase either a Drobo or a Hive for your Vault for Aperture so you have total peace of mind with your data. Display wise, just buy an Apple 30" Cinema before they replace it with a glossy version. They are absolutely superb for Video and Photography but beware, if they go wrong and they are in the bin, so buy AppleCare immediately. I've listed my setup below with where to buy and costs in UK pounds. Good luck and enjoy.
Mac Pro 8-core with the 8Gb upgrade from Apple as that will give you 4x2Gb allowing you to not have to bin the 6x1Gb's you would get as standard. Then also add the ATI Radeon HD 4870. Should come to £2798.00 inc. VAT.
Western Digital 2Tb Caviar Black (eBuyer, http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173388) for £173.86
Sonnet Tempo SATA E4P Serial ATA Host Adaper (Cancom, http://www.cancomuk.com/Brand/Sonnet/Product/59673?_Sonnet-Tempo-SATA-E4P-Serial-ATA-Host-Adapter-for-PCI-Express-(TSATAII-E4P)-TSATAII-E4P&ref=5681a404afd60a8d) for £232.00
    Apple Aperture 3 (Jigsaw, http://www.jigsaw24.com/product-details/mb957za/apple-aperture-3-web-updatable-t o-3.0.3) for £119.00
    Hive 4Tb Raid (Give's 2.8Tb of SAFE storage) (Cancom, http://www.cancomuk.com/Brand/Hive/Product/66109?_Hive-4TB-RAID-(4x1TB-drives)-5002) for £716.00
Apple 30" Cinema Display (Jigsaw, http://www.jigsaw24.com/product-details/m9179ba/apple-30-cinema-display) for £1115.08
All the prices are inclusive of the dreaded VAT so if you are VAT registered you can save. I would say that with Aperture 3 you need full Photoshop less than ever, I'd consider Elements to start with to save some cash. You could also look at a Drobo instead of the Hive but we bought both in our office and the Drobo is painfully slow in comparison to the Hive and the Hive uses a dedicated Hardware RAID where the Drobos use a software version and I've heard some horror stories from Drobo owners.

  • MacBook Air vs. 13.3" MacBook Pro for Photography

For photography, is the new MacBook Air sufficient to handle basic editing in Lightroom. I've settled on either the 13" MacBook Pro or a solid state MacBook Air. The main attraction for the Air is its size. I really like the idea of a machine that small that can do what I need to do when I am on the road. I've also read though it lags performance-wise and that for anything heavy (like Lightroom) the Pro is the way to go. Thoughts?

Good points all. I know the Air is way lighter, and with my camera bag already heavy enough I was interested in the ultra small profile. I think 1.5 pounds is not that much to give up for being able to see my pictures, which is kinda the point in the first place.
So the next question is whether I care about a solid state drive? This is not my primary machine. It is intended to be a road warrior. I want this to be a fast machine for a long time and since my long term storage is on the MacPro I don't care about the size of the hard drive. I would think 128GB is plenty for now... That would seem to point to a solid state upgrade, but I've read some things here and there that say the MBP's cache and bus throttle the drives back to 1.5GB per second... Any thoughts on this?

the Wifi storage options are interesting but it seems they only allow to read files from the device on the iPad but not transfer files to the storage device via WiFi.
I'm looking for a possibility to use the iPad for photography while traveling, without the access to a computer.
Shooting photo's in RAW format crates pretty big files that will fill up the iPad's memory pretty fast if you shoot a lot during a (let's say) month long trip.
my idea was to use load the photo's to the iPad so i could view them and sort out any bad ones. then copy them over to the storage device so i can continue using my CF cards for shooting. I have an image thank for copying the photo's directly to the HDD but it would be so sweet to be able to check them on the iPad before hand.
    any suggestions?

Check out pogo plug device, it allows you to upload camera roll via wifi.

  • Windows or Mac for photography and personal work

    Hi,
I'm new to mac and have been a windows users all these years. I'm looking to buy a new Mac for the first time. I have other apple products like Ipad & Iphone too.
I'm working as a IT manager as a main profession. But im a photography hobbist with more interest in landscape photography, travel and family pictures too. I do lot of Photoshop & Lightroom works. I dont earn money for my photography. I do spend a lot of the time in front of my computer online like internet browsing, social media..etc.
I need some advice. The below are my question.
    1. What is the best time to buy a new Mac? Should i wait till apple releases their new 2014 models?
    2. When apple releases their new Mac products every year?
    3. For my needs do i need to go for 13" MBP or 15" MBP?
    4. I shoot lot of pictures every week. Not sure will mac be good option to backup all my pictures from my camera just like a windows PC.
    5. Should i buy a cheaper windows PC (i5 with HD IPS display refurb for under $500) mainly for photography work and plus another 13 MBP retina for my regular light work? This will cut down the cost little bit.
    6. Should i just buy just one high end version of 15" MBP with i7,16GB & 512SSD for all my personal use ?
    7. If i buy a new MBP retina now, will i be able to uprade the SSD later? Does the new 2013 macs support upgrading the hardware?
I would Appreciate your valuable inputs and your time as well.
    Thanks in advance,

In order (for the ones I feel I can answer):
    1. Buy it when you feel it meets your needs. As an IT manager, I am sure you are aware how futile it is to chase the latest and greatest.
    2. No one here can predict when (or ever) Apple will make hardware or software releases. In fact, speculation on those things here is forbidden by the TOU.
    3. Matter of preference. Bigger screens are nice I had a 27" iMac and loved it.
    4. Backing up on a Mac is seamless (Time Machine). EVERYTHING is backed up. I am cautious so I also make bootable clones in addition to using Time Machine.
    5. I would not, but my opinion of "cheap" PCs running Windows is very low.
    6. Only you should make that decision. A recommendation here would be just another opinion.
    7. Yes. A friend of mine did that using a certified third party manufacturer. I always buy from Apple as I am hardware challenged.
    Barry
Edit: about # 7 -Clinton is correct, I am sure. My friend has a non-retina model.

In my opinion LabVIEW would be up to the task. However on important thing to note is that you can write inefficient code in any language. I would venture to guess that if you wrote the C++ code (sounds like you don't have much experience in that arena) there would be more risk of writing inefficient code than in a language you have experience with. In addition, LabVIEW makes it easy to support parallel processing which can improve your performance. Parallel programming in C++ is non-trivial. LabVIEW is a fully compiled language and doesn't suffer from performance hits you get from interpretive script languages.
BTW, the problem you described doesn't sound very taxing on a well written LabVIEW application.
You may want to look at some of the videos of the demos from this year's NI Week. There were some extremely powerful applications that very doing some very heavy duty number cruntching and data acquision.
