I7 QUAD VERSES HASWELL ON 15" MAC PRO RETINA

I'm looking at these 2 configs. What is the difference & if I do buy (price is no problem, sped is essential) what do you all recommend?

Haswell is an umbrella term encompassing all fourth-generation Intel Core processor.  All of the options you can get on the current Macbook Pro are Haswell, and all of them on the 15" model are quad-core i7 (the 13" models are all dual-core, some i5 and some i7).
According to Apple's tech specs page, on the 15" models, there are three processor options:
2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache
2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache
2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache
All of the 15" models come with Intel Iris Pro 5200 graphics.  The two higher options also include a discrete nVidia GeForce GT 750M graphics card.
Given that information, we can use Intel's list of 4th generation Core i7 mobile processors to determine the part numbers.  From there, we see that there are four such processors with the Iris Pro 5200 graphics, and three of them match up with the Turbo Boost clock rates given by Apple's specs:
3.2GHz: Core i7-4750HQ
3.5GHz: Core i7-4850HQ
3.8GHz: Core i7-4960HQ
You can see for yourself on the linked specs pages, but these chips are nearly identical except for the clock rates.
All three chips are very fast.  All have four cores and use HyperThreading to run two threads on each core, so your system will behave as if it has eight processor cores.  You get all of that in the base 15" Macbook Pro for $2000.  For $600 more, you get a processor about 10% faster, twice as much memory, twice as much solid state storage, and the discrete nVidia graphics.  The additional RAM and discrete graphics will have performance benefits for some workloads and not for others; the additional storage is just that; there's no performance benefit to be had there.  For another $200, you can upgrade to an even faster processor, another 8% or so increase in ideal conditions.  If performance is truly critical and price is no object, I think that it probably makes sense for to choose the $2600 config and add the processor upgrdae.
That said, if you don't necessarily need a laptop, the recently announced Mac Pro offers significantly more performance on the desktop.
If you share more about the sort of work you're doing, it might be possible to give a better recommendation.
Have a great day!

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

I am going to buy either a Mac Air or Mac Pro Retina 8GB RAM and 256GB. And as I have to still run Windows programs I will install Parallels 9. As the Mac are both 64bit machines does that mean I need to install Windows 7 64bit or just install 32 bit? (Going with Win7 as I hate Win8). And I will install Office Pro 2013 64 bit too or 32 bit or is that automatically selected by the underlying OS (I use Word, Excel and Access mainly for a membership database of a local club) ? I am not a power user so would appreciate advice on way to go

Again thank you.  If I only use word, excel and access in the Win environment and Mac OS for email and safari for internet do I need anti virus software . Ie my connection to the world is mac only and I use office pro only to ruin the club, newsletters, membership database etc. and of course anything I do there can drag/drop to the mac environ to email.  That's my understanding anyway.  Next will my existing .pst file copy directly into mac mail or do I have to runs translator  as I recall reading something about that ages ago when I started thinking Mac

  • Mac pro retina 15 inch screen

My mac pro retina 15 inch screen broke... does anyone know how much it would be?

Yes, you could do it yourself cheaper, but it requires some expertise.  Even more importantly, it will invalidate your warranty if you still have one (i.e. it is less than 1 year old or you have the Applecare that adds another 2 years warranty) - so if anything else goes wrong, you are on your own!
I'd probably bite the bullet with a machine so new and let Apple fix it.  And then be super careful in the future!

  • Mac Pro Retina Screen Replacement Procedure

So I love my Mac Pro Retina but it has the ghosting issue, everything else is fine as far as I can tell with it, its had a few kernal panics but they have all been graphics related while Chrome was open, and only in Mac OSX, so I am assuming thats fine. I can play any game I want in Windows 7 with out trouble so thats a w/e.
I am past the 14 day mark for just turning it in for a new one, and I wouldn't want too anyway. So I was wondering how they handled pure screen replacements, if they do them there at the store, or if they have to ship it off. If anyone has any experience with this any info would be helpful.

I want to know what Apple has offered other people so I can go in and negotiate knowing what solutions they are offering. I have had Apple loose equipment for a period of time after being shiped of for repairs, so if they tell me its going to need to be shiped off, and someone here has had an instore replacement of the screen I would like to be able to point to that so I don't risk having my laptop lost in the ether again.
PS Apple actually handled it well by replacing the piece of equipment with the newest model, so the lost equipment ended well for me that time, but it was kind of a gaint pain in the butt.

When running instalation, the system is looking for cd/dvd driver. Even though I browse to the usb flush. It can not find the driver. Than I can not go futher. Anny ideas?Thank you so much

Could be you khave a corrupted Win 7 install file/files.
Try downloading the Win 7 ISO for the version you have from here.

Then burn that ISO to a USB or DVD, USB would be better.

  • Dead pixel on mac pro retina

Hi I have just noticed a dead pixel on my mac pro retina. I bought the machiene in 2012 when they came out. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? Id rather have it replaced than fixed as I havent had it long. I have 3 years apple care. Do you think this is possible?

I dont think 1 dead pixel will warrant a replacement.  Only way to find out is to make an appointment at your local Apple store or AASP and have it looked at.

  • Can a shell for mac pro 13" be used with a mac pro Retina ?

Can a shell for mac pro 13" be used with a mac pro Retina ?
    Thank you.

    No.
The entire enclosure is tuned for both external jack placement, EMI-RFI radiation, airflow, and for cooling. You need exactly the correct shell and fans for the electronics you wish to install in it.

  • HT1899 i can install mac pro retina  windows 8

i can install mac pro retina for windows 8

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Boot Camp isn't compatible with Windows 8 at the moment, but if you have OS X Mountain Lion, Apple should release an update soon with Windows 8 support.
If you want to use Windows 8 now, you can install Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox and install Windows 8 on a virtual machine. Another option is to install Windows 7 on Boot Camp if you want.
If you need help installing Windows, follow the steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

Hello i would like instal windows in my mac pro retina but i don't have boot camp

What version of OS X are you running on your MBPr?
If you open Applications > Utilities, you should see Boot Camp Assistant in that folder.
That is the utility which will create the partition into which you can install Windows that you have purchased from Microsoft.

  • Does my new mac pro retina come with antivirus. And, for how long

does my new mac pro retina come with antivirus? And, for how long?

    Yes it does.
It's called OS X Lion - fully updated.
There are no known viruses for MAC OS.
Your current OS is your best protection
If however, you want to feel more secured, download ClamX AV and do a scan once a week to give you peace of mind.
    Good luck

  • Quad G5 or wait for Mac Pro?

Hi. So I'm finally making the switch to Mac! Should I get the Quad G5 or should I wait for the Mac Pro? Also, What would be better, dual 23" monitors or a single 30" monitor?
    Apple G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The other question is when do you need it. You can bet that even if the Mac Pro's (presuming that's the new name, that's what I've been guessing and it seems logical, but I haven't seen anything official, yet) announced in August, that getting one before October will be a neat trick unless you're writing a review for one of the big Mac mags or websites.
Moreover, Adobe especially has taken a wait and wait some more approach with respect to the creative suite. I expect CS3 to be universal and available prior to the end of the year, but when? Who knows. Moreover, I'm always leery of using critical apps on a first gen transition machine where the app has had significant rewrites/porting done.
If it were my money, I'd buy the Quad G5 now because you can work in all those apps you mentioned today and the next versions will work as well. The key is today, tho. If you can wait on the new box and the accompanying apps (meaning likely October), then definitely wait since the MacPro's are likely to be wicked fast and worth the wait. The caveat being the cutting edge sometimes cuts... If your ability to pay rent depends on working now, then current G5, no question. If being ahead of the curve in a few months is better, then wait. 'Course, there's probably another dozen ways to parse it, but you get the picture.
As for monitors, the question to me is what is your workflow. I would go with the single 30" monitor because you get a longer timeline view, bigger viewing windows and less desk real estate. But if you really need a palette screen because that's your workflow and you just need the palettes to be out of the way, then the question would be more like, "do I go with a 30" and 17" or two 23" monitors." I, frankly, am over the dual monitor craze. Too much neck movement for me. The 30" monitor is gigantic and should be plenty big enough.
    Ymmv, hope this helps.
