Ia there a good alternative to Microsoft windows server for enterprise?

Hi Guys, I work at a small (22 FTE's) public(not-for-profit) art galley. We are currently a mixed pc/mac office with various departments, all with different needs. Communications/Design are Mac. 2/3rds of the Curatorial is Mac, 1/3rd PC. Public Programs is mostly Mac with one PC. The accounting, giftshop, and Databases are all PC. The giftshop and accounting use ACCPAC. The collections (artwork collection that is) department uses FileMaker Pro backend, with a frontend called "Virtual Collections". We very much dislike Virtual Collections BTW. Our other database, which handles membership, and financial donation tracking, is @EASE. Because we are not-for-profit our overall budget for IT is relatively small, and the system is the way it is because of years of neglect, and stop-gap purchases. We use a Microsoft Server with Exchange. We are in the process of building a new gallery, and with it the ability to start fresh on a number of levels. One of which is our Server. Personally I'd like to see us move away from the Microsoft server ecosystem. It is cumbersome, requiring lots of IT support (which we contract out by the way, and costs us a tidy little sum yearly on top of MS Server licensing etc.) Our Management team is considering going to an all PC environment with the (I feel mistaken) attitude that "if all computers are the same flavour, the whole system will run more smoothly and thus be less expensive to manage". As on of the Mac users within this system, who knows a little about, but is no expert in, computers and networks in general, I'd like to be able to open a dialogue with management at this crucial juncture on alternatives to the system we now use.  I had run across a website some time ago that outlined the "real cost of owning and operating Microsoft Servers" but can not seem to locate it anymore. It basically broke down all costs of running a Microsoft environment, and concluded that, over time, it is not very cost efficient, especially for small enterprise. Has anybody run across any really good server alternatives to Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft Windows Server (I think ours is 2008)? We are a relatively small city, and the IT/Networking companies here all seem to push Microsoft as a be-all-end-all. I'm not so sure. I'd like to present viable alternatives with sound arguments to back them up. Can you guys help? Or, an you point me toward someone who can? Thanks guys, keep up the good work, Tmamer

Have you ever got this resolved?
I noticed your VIP and Public IP are not on the same subnet, i thought they had to be?
like both 10.x.x.x and subnet 255.0.0.0 or something like that?
Could this be your problem?
I am trying to setup a two node cluster Oracle Rac 10g on IBM Blade Center H with HS21 XM blades.
My problem is trying to setup HA and not have a single point of failure and in order to do this, it almost seems as if i need 4 network interfaces in the HS21 blade so i can team 2 together.
Did you guys purchase any addition expansion cards for these servers for that reason?
My understanding is that each HS21 have by default 2 nics, and they each go to one of the two internal cisco switches (within the entire bladecenter).
So if for instance we have one of the cisco switch die, like the one that has the public interface plugged into it, then we could not longer access the rac and that would be a single point of failure. So unless we can have 4 interfaces on the blade, and have them 2 teamed with each nic going to one of the cisco internal switches. So if any one cisco switch die's it just uses the other one.
Any thoughts, suggestions?

  • Is there anybody out there who is still using Appleworks Database and is there a good alternative?

Is there anybody else out there who is still using Appleworks Database and is there a good alternative?

There is no replacement program that will directly read Appleworks database files.
    You have two options:
    1.  Continue to use Appleworks 6.2.9, which requires Rosetta installed in Snow Leopard, or the access to Rosetta by installing Snow Leopard Server in virtualization for use in Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks:
    2.  Export your database information into a common export function (such as delimited ASCII text file) and build a new database file in an alternate database program (such as Filemaker Pro) and import your information into it.  More information here:

  • Oracle Database XE with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit)

I would like to find out if Oracle Database XE works with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit)?
If not, is there any other Oracle Open Source Database version can work with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is the tip to make it work.
Go to the installer OracleXE.exe -> Right click + Select Properties + Compatibility + Run this program in Compatibility Mode fot + Windows 2003 Sp1
Then Select Run this Program as administrator.

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Move from SP1 to Windows Service Pack 2?

    Hello,
    Our hosting system is:
    Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Server 5.2 Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    or
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Server 5.2 Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
on which we have a Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.3.0
    running.
Now our IT is demanding the Windows Service Pack 2 to be installed on the server.
Are there known issues or can this be done (about 30 patches) without any considerations?
    Thanks,
    Marco

    Oracle's general policy is:
Oracle certifies against the specific Microsoft operating system (OS) and, if applicable, service packs (SPs) stated in the Oracle product documentation. Oracle will support the use of our products on any later SP or OS security patch as soon as that SP or patch becomes generally available. Depending upon the severity, quantity, and impact of the SP or patch-related issues found, Oracle may recommend that customers wait until relevant Oracle patches have been released before upgrading to a particular SP or OS patch. Oracle may recommend or discourage the installation of specific SPs or patches if it will significantly affect the operation of Oracle software, either positively or negatively. If such a statement is deemed necessary, then Oracle Development will disseminate this statement in as timely a fashion as possible after the release of the SP or patch.
There are no known issues with ServicePack 2.

  • Microsoft Windows Server DNS Monitoring v7.1.10100.0 High CPU Usage on Windows Server 2012 R2

I've a big problem with this MP. When the zone monitoring is enabled (by default) the MonitoringHost.exe takes up all the CPU. I've put the zones in Maintenance mode.

  • REMOTE DESKTOP SERVICES CLIENT ACCESS LICENSES FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012 STANDARD AND DATACENTER

I am using a window 7 professional  service pack 1 and I purchase REMOTE DESKTOP SERVICES CLIENT ACCESS LICENSES FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012 STANDARD AND DATACENTER. but  the seller did not send me any installation CD or instruction
    on how to use it.
Please how can I use it on my window 7 professional  service pack 1.
    Thank you.

Though Bill is absolutely correct for most CALs, Remote Desktop Services does have its own special licensing server.  I haven't installed one on 2012, yet, but here is a step-by-step guide for 2008.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd983943(v=ws.10).aspx
Here is a lab guide for 2012 -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134160.aspx
But, the explanation of your environment begs the question - what are you trying to do?  You say you have a desktop OS and you are talking about Windows Server products.  In that light, your question does not make a lot of sense.

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter with SP1 Activation Failed

    I'm new here,
    I've got the following problem:
For my study I had to install a Windows server. I Activated this Windows Server and all was good. I configured Windows Server and found out it wasn't configured as I wished and a clean install would be much quicker than a re-configuration... So I did a clean
install, configured it and bumped into the next issue:
My product key isn't valid anymore because it's already in use (my deleted Windows Server). How can I release this product key so I can use it for my new installation? My evalation period is over but I still need to use it. And it's a key provided by my
    school via Dreamspark.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jay

    Hi,
Good to hear that and thanks for your feedback.
    Have a good day!

  • Why ist there still no 5.0a2 x64 windows version for download?

Even the 4.0 x64 windews version was imho stable enough for a release. But the x64 version was planned for 5.0.
But where ist the test version?
The 6.0 version is not stable enough to use so I'm back on 4.0pre13.

    Alright Firefox Users,
As I'm typing this to y'all, I'm chatting with a LIVE Mozilla Firefox Support agent online in regards to the x64.
This particular agent advised as of the Firefox 3.0 edition, the 64bit version was available to be downloaded for use. I have spent the last 1.5hrs trying to get this strighten out as they claim that the 64bits are released but I have proved to him, NO WHERE on this site does it claim there has been a 64bit release.
I have also sited the two different links [http://techblog.weblineindia.com/news/firefox-5-0-to-have-64-bit-version-for-windows-in-2011 Firefox 5.0 to have 64-bit Version for Windows in 2011] and also [[822874|Why is't there still no 5.0a2 x64 windows version for download?]] where clearly states there is nothing.
Fortunately for us, Mozilla has decided to make a higher version called Nightly 8.0 which DOES NOT have any of the add-on that you might be looking for, but to be honest, this version of browser is honestly ONE OF THE BEST I've ever used despite the lack of add-on available. I believe this would definitely make your browser perform a bit better, and if you have some patience with Firefox/Nightly, they'll eventually come out with add-on bit by bit.
In my final saying, I hope you guys encourage the techs you correspond with, have done all their research before you disconnect with them as it could be really difficult to wait for them to come back online from whatever they're doing.
So before you beg and plea for more x64 stuff, try the [http://nightly.mozilla.org/ Firefox Nightly Builds - These builds are for testing purposes only]

  • Windows Server 2008r2 Enterprise Licensing

As windows server 2008r2 enterprise edition allow 4 Virtual machines. can i run single windows server 2008r2 enterprise edition license in multiple virtual machines in Hyper-V Enterprise ?
Shall I create ADC,Antivirus, Lotus Domino & Windows File Server on each instance ?
Hi I am not able to extract KB977384-DEU. It asks to password. I need a help to get latest password of it.

For licensing questions you should always ask a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.  You can find them either at your Microsoft reseller or Microsoft itself.
www.microsoft.com/licensing.  Relying on volunteers that respond in a technical forum is not a good source of legal advice.
So, free advice being worth everything you paid for it, the virtualization rights that come with Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise license is the right to run up to four virtual operating system instances of Windows Server.  Since it is a Windows
Server license, it can only license Windows Server.  Any other operating system must be licensed according to the vendor's licensing requirements.  The is no limit to the number VMs you can create.  There is no limit to the number of VMs you
can run, up to what the host will support.
As for applications within the VMs, you have to license those according to the vendors' licensing requirements.  The Windows Server license applies to the physical host.  Application software may be licensed completely differently.
As for extracting a KB.  Is that a hot fix that you requested from Microsoft?  Those generally include a password in an associated email message.  Most likely if you request it again, you will get another password for the new download.
And, the passwords have a time limit on them, so if the time limit has passed and you still had the original password, it still would not work.

  • Access Denied to report file on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

    Hi,
I have a deployment problem for which I am out of ideas. I have an ASP.NET web site deployed on a server running Windows Server 2003 R2, sp2.  It makes extensive use of Crystal Reports, including both displaying them and e-mailing them to specified recipients as PDF files. It all works great.
Now I need to port the web site to a different server, running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, sp1. The reports display fine as long as I am not trying to convert it to PDF for e-mailng. When it gets to the following line in my code:
    MemoryStream memStream = (MemoryStream)rptDoc.ExportToStream(ExportFormatType.PortableDocFormat);
    It reports the following error:
Access denied.Error in File JobDetails {DC64A5D3-9DD7-4E4C-90F5-A08731409B29}.rpt:
Access to report file denied. Another program may be using it.
I finally got it to work by granting Modify permission to Everyone for the c:\Windows\Temp folder. Obviously this is not a good practice.  Granting Full Control  to the IUSR_servername account did not solve the problem on Windows Server Enterprise, although it did the trick on R2.
So the question is, which account needs which permission to the Temp folder to enable the PDF to get written?
    Thanks.
    Dan

What ever account the app is running under will need read / write permissions on the temp folder. Your working server should be a good place to look to see how the premissions were set there. The same will apply to any other server(?).
