IAS server and DB on same host vs seperate hosts
the company IT security folks showed my the policy, which they cannot explain it:
"it is recommended that any DBMS be installed on a host system dedicated to its support. By separating the DBMS server from iAS server, access to that platform can be more finely controlled, resulting in reduced exposure to vulnerabilities in the DBMS software"
we have the 11i on single node. they want me to seperate the application tier from db tier on the different nodes.
my question: What were the vulnerabilities in the DBMS software? anyone could comment would be appreciated.
Don't believe everything you hear from auditors. Most of the security holes in any EBS installation arise from unauthenticated vulnerabilities on the iAS servers, which more and more are listening over reverse proxy ports on the external internet. You need to be current on your quarterly security patches and have virtually the same vulnerabilities on a multiple tier system as a single tier system, unless your database listens on the default tnsnames port and that port is exposed outside the firewall.

or is it better to have 2 separete accounts for each of them?It depends on Your needs. Both ways are ok. Easier is to manage if both oracle homes are under the same account, because then it's easier to upgrade database, maybe in future You will want just one oracle home and so on.
But if for example You are running on the same machine test and dev envs, then it's somewhat normal to separete and then there is no dependency between envs and You can for example upgrade dev without touching test (that can be achieved with simple 2 different oracle_homes, but with two different users as well). -
Lync Front End and Edge on same host
Hey guys can anyone confirm if having a front end and edge on single host is supported, providing of course the ram and cpu requirements are met.

Nexus 1000V - port-profile for VSM and VEM on same host

I'm trying to run the VSM and VEM on the same host. At first I connected the VSM to the vSwitch. This works fine. Then I tried to move the VSM behind its own VEM.
I have 3 different VLANs for management, control and packet traffic. Is it possible to connect the three VSM interfaces (management, control and packet) to only one port-profile, in which these three different VLANs are configured in a trunk? Or do I have to configure for each interface a separate port-profile, if I am using three different VLANs?

The VSM does not emit VLAN-tagged frames. Therefore, its ports need to be configured in access mode. If your Control and Packet VLANs are the same, you could use the same port profile for both.
Please make sure that the access VLAN is a system VLAN for all three ports.
On a related note, if the VSM's storage is on NFS or iSCSI, the storage vmknic needs a system port profile as well. More info at:

I have 2 simple questions:
1- Is it possible to have 2 database servers on one machine given that
one is 10g (10.1.0.3) and the other is 9i (9.2.0.x) ?
2- Second, which of course is valied if answer to question 1 is YES,
What about lsnrclt version incompatibility?

Yes it's possible.
Anyway, you can't run two listeners on the same IP and port number.
There are two scenarios:
1. You specify another port number for second instance
2. You will be using just one listener for both of instances.
If you want use scenario nr. 2 then:
Modify listener.ora for 10g database and use 10g listener only.

RRAS - VPN Server and Client have same subnet
Hello,
We have a VPN server setup in RRAS on our 2008 R2 server. The VPN works fine. Clients can connect and get to resources on our server fine.
The issue is that one client has a subnet of 192.168.1.0/24 and the subnet our server uses is also 192.168.1.0/24.
When the client connects, he can get to resources on our server. However, he needs to be able to get to an IP address of 192.168.1.4 using Remote Desktop that is on his local network. He also needs to get on IP 192.168.1.3 via Remote Desktop on the remote
network.
Is there a way we can accomplish this without changing subnets?For anyone else who needs an answer to this, this is the batch file I created using these links:

I can't get the QuoteServer example to work. I am trying to run both server and client on same machine since I only have one machin available at the moment.
I am using win xp behind a firewall. Anything that might interfere?
With some System outs I can see that the server is waiting for request but never getting any...Restarted computer and now it works. Are ports locked up if I get an exception in the 'wrong' place?

(You can not use 10g Clusterware and 11g Clusterware on the same host...)
But you can use 10g Database and 11g Database on the same host, But you have to use 11G Clusterware. -

How to create and access a Virtual Host on the J2EE WAS?
Hello, I have searched through the Forums and help.sap.com and found a lot of information on how to set up a Virtual Host on the J2EE server but am having issues with it working.
The goal is to provide a simple virtual host on the J2EE Portal server to host some static image and HTML files. Previously I had stored these files in the standard publicly accessible SAP J2EE folder location /usr/sap/<SID>/JCxx/j2ee/cluster/serverx/apps/sap.com/com.sap.engine.docs.examples/servlet_jsp/_default/root/. This location is resolved to when using the URL <host>:50000 for example.
The main issue here is that during Portal support pack applications this folder gets wiped out and we have to remember to save off any custom files and folders in this location and replace them.
I would like to create a virtual host to store these static files (i.e., branding-image.jpg, etc...).
I have run through the process of creating the virtual host both using Visual Administrator and <host>:50000/nwa but am not able to get the virtual host name to resolve properly.
The following are the steps that I have taken. Let's assume the standard SAP portal (i.e., xSS, etc...) is running properly on <host>:50000.
1. create virtual host via Visual Administrator/NWA called 'sapwebserver1' by using the Create Host option (takes on the attributes of the 'default' standard virtual host)
2. change the root directory for this virtual server to a custom folder at E:/tmp/mimes (where E:/usr is where the J2EE files are all installed), no start files were set up and nothing else was changed in the new virtual host record, no permissions were changed on the /tmp/mimes folder from whatever the default Windows user permissions are normally set, I am using a local Windows administrator account but I have not seen any reference in the help files or the examples that indicate that any specific permissions updates need to be made on the virtual host root folder
3. restarted the J2EE server as well as the HTTP Provider service
4. before updating the company DNS, I wanted to test this locally on the server and so have updated the server's local HOSTS file with a <host IP address> sapwebserver1 entry
5. from that server I can ping the sapwebserver1 virtual host name and it resolves properly to the machine's physical IP address
According to all of the documentation and examples I have seen I should now be able to (from that server) launch a browser and access the static files in the virtual host by referring to http://sapwebserver1:50000/branding-image.jpg for example. This is not working and the browser just brings up a Cannot display the web page error in IE. By referring to the virtual host name sapwebserver1:50000 it's supposed to hit the J2EE server and based on the host name sapwebserver1 realize that it should resolve to the root directory E:/tmp/mimes. This is not happening. Just as a test I have created a copy of the 'default' virtual host and called it sapwebserver2, updated the local HOSTS file for this entry, and tried to see if that would work like the 'default' host. My expectation was that http://sapwebserver2:50000 would behave the same was as http://<host>:50000 but it too fails to resolve just like the sapwebserver1 virtual host refernce.
Would anyone happen to have any pointers on what to do next? I just want a simple virtual host to be able to serve up some static images and files.

GrahamThis defeats the purpose of trying to centralize SAP-related web resources on the SAP server. Typically IIS/Apache or other non-SAP servers are under the control of IT and not the SAP BASIS group.
We simply would like to have a centralized location to store static web files so that they are not overwritten during Portal support pack applications. -
One Oracle Application Server and multiple OC4J Instances
While we are getting new server (for development) we have to set-up a Development and Production enviroment for our project (dont have previous OAS installation) but on the same machine.
So, is a good option to have One OAS INstallation (Ora Home) and then create multiple OC4J instances, one for each environment (Development, QA and Production)?, is it possible? How to manage deployments between OC4J instances, simulating different contexts if they are in the same server and under the same HTTP Server? Will be there conflicts?Hi,
you can do this and OracleAs will manage the different instances. The deployment can be done with Enterprise Manager in which case you select the OC4J instance first before deploying. If deploying from JDeveloper, you can specify the OC4J instance when creating the named connection

Final Cut Server and Compressor / Qmaster serial conflict
On my Final Cut Server machine, i have Final Cut Server version 1.1.1. On my Mac Pro i have Final Cut Studio 7. I have installed Compressor and Qmaster on my Final Cut Server from the Final Cut Pro DVD, so i can use Qmaster (the version of Qmaster must match exactly on all machines). But the two serials conflict, Final Cut Server will not start due to the following problem:
"Either the current serial number is not valid or there is another server using the same serial number.
Check the serial number and then stop and start the server using the Final Cut Server Preferences panel."
Of course both serials is completely legit. Is it really true that i either need to downgrade Compressor and Qmaster (FCS will work, but Qmaster will not) or buy FCS 1.5? I have paid lots of money for this setup already, it can't be true that i am forced to update to 1.5.

We installed Final Cut Server and on the same MacPro we installed Final Cut Studio.
After a while we dedicated this machine to Final Cut server and used the Final Cut Studio license on another nachine.
Now, if I want to change or add a transcode setting in the compressor, I'm getting the error message: 'conflicting serialnumber' or something like it.
So compressor thinks it's still part of th FinalCutStudio installation. But I don't quite understand, because Final Cut Server has its own compressor, isn't it?
How can I solve this without loosing the custom transcode settings I've made in compressor. -
I’m trying to send email using exchange send connector STARTTLS setting to the SMTP server. I have read multiple documents on configuring TLS for send connector, but they talks about outbound connections to internet facing servers. My Exchange 2013 and SMTP
server is in the same domain (let’s say A.com) and I’m creating dummy domains on my SMTP server (e.g.

[email protected] ) and their respective send connectors on the exchange server end. In the smart host section added the IP address of the SMTP server and in the scoping section added the SMTP domain address (e.g. dummy1.local ). In the FQDN field, added
the FQDN of the exchange server 2013 which certificate is enabled with SMTP service.
Could you tell me a step by step procedure, where I’m going wrong or any extra settings needs to added?
Presently, it is giving me an error that 530 5.5.1 TLS encrypted connection is required.
Note: I’ve created the Microsoft CA certificates for the SMTP and exchange servers and imported them in the personal certificate container. In which, the exchange certificate is created with FQDN name of the server and enabled for the SMTP service.
I’m using OPENSSL certificate for making the SMTP server TLS enabled. (let me know, if I need to import the OPENSSL certificate anywhere on the exchange end)?
