IBM I series and ESS/MSS
I am at a client site where they have IBM I series installed and it being a small organization, do not have the resources to upgrade the hardware to something else.
Is there a OSS note or any other document that explains of any limitations on specific hardware/ browser capabilities for installing ESS/MSS?
Heard that ADS is not supported on IBM I series - is this true?
Thoughts appreciated.
Regards, Sunil
Hi Priya,
For ESS and MSS exist the documentation that explains the basic configuration, you may consult them at SAP Help.
ESS http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/f6/263359f8c14ef98384ae7a2becd156/frameset.htm
MSS http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2005/helpdata/en/29/d7844205625551e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
In order to configure the access to any transaction through WebGui, what you must do is to Create the Systems at the System Administration area and then create the SAP Transaction iViews you need to access.
Hope this helps,

Webdynpro Java and ESS/MSS
Hello,
It has been a rumour for a long time and now it seems that SAP will convert all ESS/MSS services into Webdynpro ABAP....so i want to know what's the plan for Webdynpro Java ...? what areas will it be used...? and what are the options for Webdynpro Java Developers....? ...one thing for sure is to learn Webdynpro ABAP...
Regards,
AnilAs far as I know, SAP has changed travel management and HR administraor from WDJ to WDA as of EhP1.
Do you have any ideas about any other BP?
Actually, I wonder SAP has been developed any new BP based on WDJ after EhP is introduced. -

Performance management with ESS and no MSS??
Hello Gurus,
I have a very peculiar scenario regarding and ESS/MSS.
Let me first post our requirments:
We have implemented all modules of HR along with OM and now in the process of implementing Performance Management along with ESS only . I am stressing on ESS only here with NO MSS functionality.
Now my question is..is it really possible in the first place to have a performance management functionality without MSS and just with standalone ESS? If yes, what are the options that I have to configure the performance management system and the ESS system so that the workflows for Planning, Rating an employee, and Approvals regarding appraisals can be achieved??
Is it possible to assign an ESS role to the manager and then when the manager logs in ESS, he/she can go ahead with the performance management process and can check employees just like the way it happens in MSS?
Thanks a lot for your time.
Best Regards.
Karan.Hi,
In your case check for HR administrator for final ratings and other things also check for r/3 desktop services.
but why they are not going for mss, om is in place right

Karan.Dear Karan,
Firstly, it is not mandatory to implement MSS for approvals/notifications...
Manager in MSS term is used to refer Head of Unit (in general) and not the immediate supervisor, i.e, relation ship (012).
UWL - Universal Work List is the place where all work items for approval is listed and this can be activated in ESS with out using MSS functionality also.
Comming to Performance Managment: Yes it can be acheived. NO MSS is required for Appraisals.
if you are using BSP applications, there are different pages available for employee view, and manager view..\
all that u need to do is, use the appropriate pages in the links that you gonna provide in ESS>Performance Management.
SAP has given provision to create your own notifications (workflow) in configurations. Create a Z Event and ask your ABAPer to send a notification based on that Z Event. This all is standard.

ESS/MSS applications from ECC 6.0 on a SL as ECC 5.0 + EP7.0
Hi all,
We have a "strange" situation on the client and I need you help or guidance.
We are implementing Portal and ESS/MSS on a system landscape as ECC 5.0 for the back-end system and EP 7.0 as front-end.
My problem is if the ESS/MSS iViews which have the data source as ECC 6.0 or higher are available and if yes how their behavior will be on such environment? We should expect errors or bugs or lousing functionalities or restrictions on it?
Perhaps the first point will be if we can implement them? The client wants specific applications like time accounts or appraisals. I should mention to you the client has decided to make an upgrade of the back-end system to ECC 6.0 but is not decided yet when. In the meantime we already start the project for ESS/MSS base on the current system landscape.
What do you think?
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
EugenI got my answer. You may implement XSS applications as for ECC 5 even on EP 7 but you'll face limitations in functionalities and face lots of tech issues and abnormal behavior from xss applications. Not the ideal system landscape.

Where Web Dynpro Java version of Adobe Forms are used in ESS MSS
Hi, SDN Expert.
I am working on research the use of Adobe Interactive Forms in the current processes of HCM ESS MSS.
We are on ECC5.0, EP7.0, and ESS MSS SP21. We are in the midst of upgrading to ECC6.0.
Do you know where Web Dynpro Java version of Adobe Forms are used in ESS MSS are used? OR are they all in Web DYnpro ABAP version in ECC6.0?
Thanks,

What is the exact procedure of upgrading the ESS/MSS
Hi,
We intially started with EP 7.0 sp13 and ESS/MSS version 600 SP10.Later on we upgraded to EP 7.0 SP13 and ESS/MSS to SP13.
we have done lot of customisations to SAP ESS/MSS standard code and we did them again when we upgraded ESS/MSS.
Again we are planning to upgrade Portal to another version .so here my doubts are
1.Is it necessary to upgrade ESS/MSS everytime we upgrade portal(because ESS/MSS version = Portal version - 3 )
2.Do we need to do all the customisations again manually?
3.Is there anyway we can create copy of all the DCs which we want to customise and then do the customisations so that we dont need to redo all the work whenever we upgrade ESS/MSS
Thanks
Bala DuvvuriBala,
Usually, there are 3 (+1 ) types of patches that are done:
1. Kernel and JDK. This one is easy, can be done often. Affects perfomance, but rarely functionality.
2. Netweaver SPS. This one will update basic functionality, but in most cases will not affect ESS. Also can be done every 3 month.
3. ERP SPS. This one will affect ESS. You will be required to go through the cookbook. Backend HR component versions must match EP XSS. It makes sense, because EP XSS will call backend BAPIs and they should be of the same versions. Not very often I see ERP SPS applied every 3 month. One of the reasons is that user UI screens and procedure may change and the cycle of testing and user training rarely fits into 3 month.
+1. EHP, Enancement Packs. This is SAP effort to give a more granular aproach to functional changes. Basically your functional team will decide if it needs a new function and it will be possible to implement and activate it. If it happens that the function is HR and it affects XSS and it brings a new version, then yes, you will need to do XSS merge-update. It will be clear from the EHP docs. How often to do ESS related EHP? See 3. Keep in mind that EHP docs may give an impression that there is no impact until you "turn on" new function, but it is true for ABAP (with some exceptions), less so on the Java side.

Kuldeep VermaHi
First try a very simple application with nothing in it just one text saying Hello World
Run it and see what happens.
Also check if your url uses FQDN name. something like https:
company.name.co:50000\.......
If you do not use the FQDN it will always show a script error on the bottom and some functions will not work e.g
dropdowns.

NetWeaver Portal and ERP 6.0: BI, ESS/MSS and full Portal on one machine
Hello,
with ERP 6.0 you need a EP Core Portal for BI Java. An other EP Core Portal for HCM ECC/MSS. The iViews from this portal you integrate in the main portal via federated portal. But in this scenario i need to much portals and have a lot of maintenance costs (administration overhead for evry portal). For a small Customer i will build one Portal for all. It is possible e.g. to use the BI Portal with ESS/MSS and as full portal?
Best regards,
PatrickHi,
So you would like one BI installation with both the ABAP and the Java-stack with the full BI-functionallity and additionally the XSS-component and set it up to work against the ECC ABAP-only system ?
I think the scenario would actually work, but:
1) You might get future problems if you want to upgrade your BI-system and not the ECC-system.
Is it possible to run the old XSS-components in the new java-stack ?
2) You might get future problems if you want to upgrade your ECC-system and not the BI-system.
What if the new version of the XSS-component demands certain java-components which the BI-system do not have.
So my recommendation is still to run the java-stack on both systems.
ECC with the XSS-java-components and BI with the Bi-java-components.
This way you do not lock yourself into a corner and each system can be upgrade independent of the other.
