IBM tape drive on SUN box.

Did any body tried IBM tape drive on solaris 8 and legato as backup software. We are having system panics when we try to access Tape drives.

I have used external IBM SCSI drive with Solaris8 and legato without any issues.
What kind of a tape drive is it? What is the Sun Hardware platform being used? Are there any messages logged just before the panic? Is st.conf configured properly? Is there a problem on the scsi bus?
You might want to send the core files to Sun, if you have got suport on the box or use kdb yourself.

  • L20 and IBM tape drive

    Hi all,
I have StorageTek L20 robot (FW 2.12.06) and IBM Ultrium-TD1 tape drive (FW:59C0) which i updated with latest firmware.
Now robot cannot recognise tape drive, with code: 00 Unknown Drive
I assume this is firmware related problem, so the question is:
Will robot firmware update to version 2.15.03 resolve this issue, and bring online my backup?

I have used external IBM SCSI drive with Solaris8 and legato without any issues.
What kind of a tape drive is it? What is the Sun Hardware platform being used? Are there any messages logged just before the panic? Is st.conf configured properly? Is there a problem on the scsi bus?

  • Oracle Secure Backup 10.3.0.3.0 in Windows 2003 with IBM Tape Not Working

    Hi,
I am currently implementing Oracle Secure Backup. My environment is this:
OS: Windows Server 2003 (32Bit) for all servers
    Database: Oracle Database 11.2.0.1.0
    Tape Library: IBM-ULT 3580-TD4
I will have to configure 2 machines to work with OSB: server01 and server02.
    Server01:
This serves as the client, admin, mediaserver
    Server02:
This will serve as the client, admin
When I log in to Server01, in the device manager, I can see the Tape Drives (no warnings, no questions marks) so I think it's good.
When I log in to Server02, in the device manager, there are no Tape Drives seen. Is is ok or shall i configure the IBM Tape drives to be also accessible since this is just the client, admin host?
Also I have noticed that when I installed the OSB in Server02 (client, admin), when I am on the SCSI Devices, i dont see any tape device (since its not in the device manager). Because of this i cannot start OSB Services and cannot add this host to the mediaserver.
Also, I am having issues Configuring the Library and the devices. I have read the official documentation completely but i think its very general and it does not present the detailed step-by-step process in installing and configuring OSB.
When I issued: lsdev -lvg in the mediaserver , I can read an error: Warning: bus info unknown or drive not installed.
Help is very much appreciated. Thanks a lot guys!

I have resolved the issue. Ill close this thread. :))

  • Tape drive connect

    Hi Gurus,
Pls help me to connect DAT72 tape drive to Sun fire v240 server and to make available to my solaris 9 OS .
How do I can test the drive?

    Internal or external drive?
Basically, plug it in (if it's internal turn the server off first!) and run a devsfadm -C tape command and see if that picks it up. You may need a reconfig reboot. I don't like how Sun and hardware interact!

  • Sun StorEdge 2U SDLT 600 Tape Drive install issue

After installing the tape drive and doing a scsi probe I get the following errors:
ERROR: LSI1030 MPT FIRMWARE, FAULT CODE:

ERROR: LSI 1030 COULD NOT SET INITIATOR ID.
    CANT OPEN SCSI HOST ADAPTER.
What would cause this? hardware is brand new also.

    Hi All,
    Thanks for your help.
The problem is now solved when i proceeded as followed:
    1. When i executed the command cfgadm -al
the output showed the below information about the tape drive controller:
    c3              Connected        unconfigured             OK
I disconnected the controller and then run the devfsadm -c tapes which took about 1 hour to complete and then, now the system can detect and tape and the first backup run
    successfully.

We use a IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library. 1 Drive with 23 slots.
It is a Dell TL2000 tape drive.
The DPM-Server is a x64 Windows 2012 R2 with Microsoft System Center Data
    Protection Manager 2012 R2 Version 4.2.1235.0
In Device Manager I have a Medium Changer device which is IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library(Driver Version 6.2.4.1)
and Tape drives has IBM ULTRIUM 6 HH 3580 TAPE DRIVE(Driver Version 6.2.4.1)
The tapes are not write protected.
Is this a tape issue or a protection-agent failure? Any suggestions??

    Hi,
We have seen this when using OEM drivers - please install the Microsoft in-box tape drivers.
    1) Open device manager
    2) Locate the tape drive
    3) Right-click and look at the properties.
    3) Under the DRIVER tab, select UPDATE DRIVER
     a) Select the Install from list or specific location (Advanvced) - next.
     b) Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install. - next.
     c) Uncheck the Show comtabile hardware checkbox.
     d) Highlight LTO under the manufacturer.
     e) Highlight the LTO tape drive under model - then next.
     f) This should install the Microsoft ltotape.sys driver.
    4) Rescan the tape library in the DPM console, if a duplicate tape drive appears, then run the following utility.
c:\program files\Microsoft dpm\dpm\bin\DPMDriveMappingTool.exe to remap the tape drive and remove the duplicate
    5) Now inventory the library and try a new backup.

  • Internal Tape Drive

    Hello All,
    Oracle DB version: 10.2.0.1.0
We have Internal Tape Drive attached with our AIX box.
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r3s/index.jsp?topic=/iphcd/fc6120.htm
Currently we are doing disk backup as below:
here is the script to perform backup:
    . $HOME/.profile
    export ORACLE_SID=sid
    rman nocatalog << EOF
    connect target
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL FOR MAINTENANCE DEVICE TYPE disk;
    configure controlfile autobackup on;
    backup as compressed backupset database plus archivelog delete input;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    exit
    EOF
Now we want to backup on tape.
First, how could I read tape from the command prompt?
And how will I change my script for the tape backup.
    Thanks
    D

Do you have a media manager software (such as TSM) to enable backups directly from RMAN to tape? I thought I remembered something about 10.x having a default media manager, besides Secure Backup, but that seems far fetched right now.
Without a media manager, you could
    - backup to disk with rman, identifying the backup set files somehow
    - then write those files to tape
So below the rman part in your script, you use AIX commands to write files to tape.

  • Ufsdump to remote AIX tape drive

I am trying to ufsdump to a remote tape drive that is on an AIX box.
I have configured the /.rhosts file on the AIX server
I have created a symbolic link /etc/rmt to point to /usr/sbin/rmt on the AIX box
I am running the following command on the sun box
    ufsdump 0cuf AIXBOX:/dev/rmt0.1 /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0
    but I get this :
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Thu Feb 18 15:42:17 2010
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
    DUMP: Dumping /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 (SUN10:/) to AIXBOX:/dev/rmt0.1
DUMP: Mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
    DUMP: Mapping (Pass II) [directories]
    DUMP: Writing 63 Kilobyte records
    DUMP: Estimated 12017946 blocks (5868.14MB).
DUMP: Lost connection to remote host.
DUMP: Bad return code from dump: 1
DUMP: Date of this level 0 dump: Thu Feb 18 15:42:28 2010
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
Is it possible to get this to work?

If i interpreted the code to ufsdump correctly, it will attempt to execute the command /etc/rmt on the remote host over a shell (port 514) connection.
The rmt supports the remote magtape protocol, so ufsdump creates a datastream and sends it over the network to rmt, which is responsible for sending it to a tape device.
Is there an /etc/rmt binary in AIX? In Solaris there is a /etc/rmt, even if its just a link to /usr/sbin/rmt, if there isn't a /etc/rmt, check if there is an rmt binary elsewhere on the system, and symlink it.
If there is a /etc/rmt, two other things to check would be that the shell connection is working (by running something like 'rsh AIXBOX echo hej') and double check the path to the tape driver on the AIX host.
Hope this helps, i am not that experienced in remote taping nor AIX.
    .7/M.

  • Can I connect an external DLT Tape drive to the SCSI connector on an E450

Hi... totally new to SPARC. I have inherited an E450. It appears to have the 8 bay option. I have 6 scsi disk drives installed in slots 0 through 5. Internally, there is one ultra scsi controller in slot 2 and two internal cables running from the top of the card, one for each channel. I do have an extra ultra pci scsi card, but when I plugged it into a pci slot, the system would not boot. Bottom line, can I connect an external DLT drive to either Channel A or Channel B at the rear of the Unit and not intefere with other SCSI devices (i.e. the disk drives). Currently, the DLT is set to SCSI ID 8. If this isn't recommended, how do I install the secondary ultra scsi card and have the system recognize it ? Note that the Hard drives have been wiped and I WILL be loading Solaris 10, but have not yet. I wanted to make sure all of the hardware worked first. The second PCI Scsi controller I have is an Adaptec 39160, and I'm assumming it will work IF needed. I'd prefer not to use it if necessary.... ANY HELP is sincerely appreciated ! Thanks, Randy

I suggest you leave the current internal connections just as they are.
You never know when you'll need to add more disks.
That Adaptec card is for PC's.
It won't work in a Sun SPARC-based system.
What sort of SCSI interface is required for that tape device?
Single-Ended? High Voltage Differential? Low Voltage Differential?
You need a card that matches that interface type if you hope it to "drive" the tape.
One quick way to tell, is to examine the chassis of the tape peripheral
and find the small icon that should be at the port for the SCSI cable.
For example, Sun's 375-0005 card is Single-ended and is what you already have inside your E450.
Sun's 375-0006 is a HVD card and would be correct for A1000 and D1000 arrays or L7 or L25 tape libraries.
Sun's 375-3057 card is LVD and would be appropriate for Sun's D2 array.
The manual for that 375-3057 card happens to have pictures of the SCSI icons I just mentioned.
See page 35 in that manual.
    http://192.18.109.11/816-2156-11/816-2156-11.pdf
Once you confirm what's needed by the tape peripheral, we may be able to suggest how to connect it properly.
