IBM Thinkpad T20 mouse not recognized

I cannot startx after running 'xf86config' due to the mouse (actually the little red trackpointer on the keyboard) not being recognized.  I set it up as a PS/2 mouse and per the FAQ added the lines in /etc/devfsd.conf to establish the symlink.  I've tried devices /dev/mouse and /dev/psaux to no avail.  I do not have an XFConfig-4 file that would take precedence over the XF86Config file I edited.
What would be the suggestions for next steps to the X up and running?  I'm thinking there was a module I didn't load, but offhand can't think of what it would be.
Thanks for any help on this!

I got it working tonight by attaching a PS/2 mouse to the PS/2 port, running HWD, and using the generated XF86Config file.  With the PS/2 mouse attached, it worked fine.  I'm not sure why attaching this made any difference, but glad it works.
Thank you everyone for your kind assistance with this issue!
cool, great you managed it finally ... can you please post the section "InputDevice" from your working XF86Config here? i wonder what "hwd" have created --- thanx in advance
if you have special keys on your Thinkpad (i dont know the T20, but a lot of TPs have special keys for volume, "home" ... ) and want to use them for something (e.g. you can run an xterm by pressing the "Thinkpad" button) on arch, you can try some packages i build for arch for TPs:
tpctl (thinkpad control)

  • How to install Solaris 8 on IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop

    Hello,
I would like to install Solaris 8 on my IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop and I am facing two kinds of problems:
    -1- I cannot boot on the Matshushita DVDROM which is shipped with : i have got a boot panic ;
-2- My SAVAGE/IX 8MB Video Card is not recognised.
    ANY HELP APPRECIATED
    [email protected]

    Hi There,
Although laptops are not officially supported, I am aware that another
customer managed to install their system over a network connection
    due to local CDROM issues.
This may be something to try if you have access to another SOlaris System with a local CDROM.
As for the Video Card, I have not found any records of anyone
else attempting to use this particular chipset and so you may be
limited to just standard VGA in this case.

  • Solaris 8 on IBM Thinkpad T20 - Display Problem!

    Hi Forum,
I have Solaris 8 07/01 installed on this IBM Tninkpad T20. The problem has been the display. It has S3 Savage IX 8. I need help to resolve this issue. Here's what I have done.
After installation of OS, latest patches were applied. Installed XFree86 without any problems. Configured and generated a /XF86Config.new file from /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure. The XF86Config.new was copied as /XFConfig and /etc/X11/XFConfig. This file looks good detecting the Savage driver with this sentence in it: "Savage(0): VESA VBE DDC Support". I understand that this adapter has been picked up with correct configuration.
When I run XFree86, it just displays a grey screen with the mouse cursor in the middle of the screen, and no other action after that. No cursor movement or any response from the keyboard. Leading to cold boot of the system. in short, XFree86, did'nt quite work as it should have.
As an alternative, I have installed these two packages and patches for extended XSun support, which uses this existing XFree86 drivers. I downloaded and "pkgadd"ed the SUNWxf86u & SUNWxf86r and the patches, 109401-10 and 108653-30. Afterwhich, I did find additional adapters showing up in "kdmconfig". I did find Savage IX and other drivers which were'nt found earlier. Selected this driver, with various montitor types in the next scrreen, was unsuccessful in displaying the screen. I have tried the same with VESA and VGA compatible drivers too and different monitor types. Not getting the right display. I have to try the Xig patch. But the existing XFree86 and XSun should still do the work. Any Suggestions & help appreciated.

Regarding T20 laptops with Solaris8. See www.egroups.com Solaris on Intel archive. You can see that Solaris 8 can boot from this kind of hardware. One solution would be:
-Install from the network. Jumpstart installation if your model of laptop has a builtin NIC.
-See more details about this on Jumpstart installation.

  • USB mouse not recognized in windows 8.1 - tried all no help

    Hi,
I am having this issue for 2 weeks now. Plugging the muse to USB port didn't make any difference to system, it hasn't been seen at all (noting in dev manager, no beep etc). I was connecting same mouse using PS/2 adapter and worked well.
After doing UEFI bios update and installing latest drivers for motherboard mouse is shown in device manager as "Not Recognized" Code 43. I did try to use different USB mouse, same story, playing with drivers, deleting/uninstalling in Device Manager
didn't make any change. Deleted all USB devices/Hubs used generic drivers suggested by windows didn't change anything as well. Windows Troubleshooter see problem - but don't give options to fix it. System is up to date with windows updates, no new software
was installed. Changed as well Power settings regards to USB ports but no help
A lot of people suggest to go to UEFI Bios and changing USB settings of xHCI to disabled/enabled/auto - well none of this worked for me.
Anyone has any other clue which is worth to try?
Seen somewhere that locating USB port VID/PID (from dev manager) then Find it in Registry and edit "Power Settings" fix problem for some - can see VID/PID for this mouse in registry - but no editable settings there.
    Thank you in advance
    Marcin

    Hello Marcin,
Can you use other devices normally like USB keyboard and USB driver?
If you can, please contact the manufacturer and check if there are hardware issues.
About the error code 43 in device manager, please take a look at the following KB.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123/en-us
One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.
If you have already run the Troubleshooting Wizard, you might want to check the hardware documentation for more information about diagnosing the problem.
When you try the Windows troubleshooter, what problem do you see?

  • External keyboard and mouse not recognized after waking from sleep

This started happening all of a sudden. It was working fine before that. When I disconnect the power cable, keyboard, and then connect them back, its not recognized. To make it recognize the keyboard and mouse, I have to logout and login or restart the laptop. I looked at this related post, but the PRAM reset fix did not work for me : http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=870482
Any idea how to fix it?
    OS version: 10.9.2
    MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012
Processor 2.9 GHz Intrel Core i7
    Memory 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I have a similar problem on our G3 iBook with Panther. Most of the keys don't work, and of the four or five that do, they print only gibberish.
For a while I had control of the "C" key, and I was able to start from the Installation CD-ROM. I ran Disk Utility. It found and repaired a whole bunch of permissions and reported no problem with the hard disk. But I still cannot use the keys, and since then I've lost the use of the "C" also.
Because I cannot use the keyboard, I cannot type in my administrator's password, and for that reason I cannot use System Preferences to start from the Installation CD-ROM. I did not see the Hardware Test on the CD-ROM, but it sounds interesting.
Any ideas on how to get back to the CD-ROM when my keyboard doesn't work?

  • Other mouse besides Bluetooth Magic Mouse not recognized?

I am fairly new to the forum, so I am sorry if this is in the wrong section...
I bought my computer last summer, and it came with the Magic Mouse and wireless keyboard, both, as all of you probably know, bluetooth. Nothing is wrong with these things. In fact, I much prefer them over other mice and keyboards. The problem is the left and right click buttons. I understand that I can go into System Preferences and get the Magic Mouse to have both the Left and Right clickers, which I have done. I didn't really enjoy the feel of it, as I prefer feeling both of the buttons over just one large one. So, I decided to hook up my wireless Microsoft mouse with a small USB connection. When I disabled my Magic Mouse and connected the Microsoft mouse, nothing happened. I wasn't able to use the Microsoft mouse, which works fine on any other non-Apple computer that I test it on.
Is there any way that I can go about fixing this problem and making it so that the Microsoft mouse is recognized by the computer?
    Thanks,
    ~Elliot

    Hello E:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I decided to hook up my wireless Microsoft mouse with a small USB connection.
Are you trying to do this with a USB "dongle?"
When I disabled my Magic Mouse
How did you do this? Did you delete the magic mouse in system preferences?
In any event, I have not seen anything like what you are describing. I am not criticizing non-Apple devices, but I am unable to suggest troubleshooting steps for non-Apple hardware as I have no experience with them.

  • 5 button mouse not recognized

I am using a Dynex DX-WMSE mouse. In 10.4.11 the mouse was automatically recognized and I could configure all 5 buttons. Now the mouse is recognized but I can't configure any of the buttons (only l and r). I would like to customize this mouse as much as possible. Any ideas? Thanks

The mouse preference pane does not control all of the buttons of the mouse. Apparently apple went and hid the rest of the mouse functions in the Expose/Spaces pane.
If you click there and find the drag down menu you can customize each of the additional mouse buttons that you have.
Yay for me finding the answer!

  • IBM ThinkPad T40 - Will not start up - Please HELP!

    Hi!
So, I have an IBM ThinkPad T40, and  for some reason it will not turn on, The Power Indicator is lit up, as is the battery indicator acknowledging that my computer is plugged in. It worked earlier today when I was at the public library (around 5pm-8pm) but now at 12am when I am attempting to turn it on, it looks as if it's turning on, but nothing happens. I can feel the hum of the mother board, as if it is booting up. Yet, the screen remains blank.
Does anyone know what I can do? I'm unemployed at the moment and use the computer to do art commissions for people, so it and Unemployment benefits are my only source of income. I can't really afford technical support. The computer was a gift from my mother, and  I'd really like it to continue working!
If you have a resolution please either reply, or contact me at [e-mail removed]

The first thing I'd do is connect an external monitor to see if that works. (Remember to use Fn-F7 to toggle monitor modes.) If an external monitor works then you've got an LCD-related problem, probably a defective inverter card or CCFL backlight.

  • Magic Mouse Not Recognized Not Recognized as Such

I just got a Magic Mouse for my Mac Pro (2.8GHz 8-processor, late-2008), running 10.5.8. It connects through Bluetooth fine, but it doesn't seem to be recognized as a Magic Mouse. The "magic" features don't seem to be working. It only seems to do left- and right-clicks.
I also see that it doesn't seem to show up in the System Preferences Keyboard&Mouse panel, Bluetooth tab. No name or battery level is shown.
Yes, I did do a Software Update before and after pairing. Actually, come to think of it, that's not exactly true: Before pairing, I launched Software Update and found that it only had a Security Update pending (very unlikely to have anything to do with the mouse), so I did the pairing and then did the security update. After rebooting from that, I launched Software Update, and it said that I am up-to-date.
The book and the Magic-Mouse box say that 10.5.8 is a sufficiently high OSX version.
Any ideas on this? Thanks, everybody!

ok my mistake, i DID have USBOverdrive on my computer.
So here's the exact way to solve the problem:
    (1) just re-download and re-install USBOverdrive (www.usboverdrive.com)
    (2) restart when prompted
    (3) go to the usboverdrive system preferences panel and UNINSTALL IT
    (4) restart whether or not prompted
(this SHOULD fix the problem at this point, if not, see further below)
    (5) open the bluetooth preferences (or access from the menu) and add a new bluetooth device
    (6) pair your trackpad
    (7) it is probably working now; but go to the trackpad preferences pane to be sure that you're seeing the new magic trackpad preferences rather than the old macbook pro preferencdes
    IF THIS DID NOT WORK:
    (8) you need to find ALL references for any file containing "usboverdrive" in the name. possible places to look include:
    Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences
    Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions
    Macintosh HD/Users/YOURNAME/Library/Preferences
    (9) DELETE ANY AND ALL FILES CONTANING "USBOVERDRIVE"
    (10) restart your computer. Everything should be working now
    Good luck!

  • Usb Kensington mouse not recognized in Yosemite 10.10

I have a simple Kensington USB mouse that I sometimes use on my MacBook Pro. But when I plugged it in the first time to my mac with 10.10 installed, I got a keyboard set-up prompt, asking me to hold down some buttons to calibrate it. So I rebooted the mac, with the mouse plugged in and now nothing at all happens when I plug in the mouse.
The mouse does not appear to get any power from the mac either, the red light underneath does not appear. The mouse does still work
I've tried both USB ports on this computer. It has worked fine before upgrading to 10.10 without any software installed.

  • Magic Mouse not recognized in parts of Mail

When using Magic Mouse and Mail, if you follow a link out of Mail, then return, you can not activate Mail unless you click on the top pane only, any fix for this?

Also, try a simple normal reboot.

  • Bluetooth stalling and mouse not recognized

My Logitech v470 was connecting and disconnecting with no glitches.
Now, it seems after the last OS X 10.5 security update everything with Bluetooth has gone downhill.
Now it no longer sees the mouse, and when I do try to find it using the Bluetooth utility from the menu bar, system prefs, or anywhere, that utility freezes, and I have to force quit it. I even have to restart my machine, which just just stays hung up indefinitely.
It seems this is a fairly common problem. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Have you tried reading the many other posts on this forum that talk about this issue? It seems that by default the services are not enabled for some peripheral devices. Try right-clicking the bluetooth icon, selecting "show my bluetooth devices" (or similar i dont ahve it in front of me), then right click the keyboard/mouse, go to the Services tab and make sure the services are enabled.
