IBM Thnikpad T30 512M panics

After a recent system board changed on a IBM T30, my Solaris 9/10 panics when during boot up. It was working fine before the change with 512M memory, but after this change, Solaris works fine with one DIMM of 256M. When both 256M Dimms installed, Solaris would panics during boot up. I tried different DIMMs, and the result is the same. I talked to the repair depot, they claimed the system board which they replaced is exactly the same as the old one. Has anyone run into the same problem??

A bit more information on the panic, the panic string is on "segpt_badop".

  • IBM Thinkpad T30 lcd panel..replacement in due?

My lcd display panel is blurry (i.e. brightness level is not as expected though pressing Ctrl+Home)...
Maybe should entire unit be replaced?  In this case, how to locate  the correct version as (2) types, XGA  and SXGA are
    available..
Where can i find panel FRU number?
If you fool me once, shame on you...
If you fool me twice, shame on me!

    Welcome to the forum!
A couple of things come to mind here:
    a) Go into BIOS>Configuration>Display and make sure it's set on "high". Press F10 to save and exit.
    b) Is the LCD slightly reddish/pinkish on initial boot? If yes, your backlight is dying and need to be replaced. Most people prefer to replace the whole LCD panel, though.
    c) If your LCD is not red or pink on boot, your inverter may be on its way out. Replacing it is a cheap and easy job, and that's where I would begin.
All the FRU numbers and instructions on "how to" can be found in the HMM that can be downloaded here:

One short beep, pause, three short beeps, pause, three more short beeps, and one short beep.
now based on what ive searched online it says it might be problem either with the
    DIMM.
    System board
i have no clue how to fix either of these any help or advice?
My laptop: Ibm Thinkpad T30 Windows Xp Pro
im not sure where to find the serial number on it either sadly its kinda old but please respond thanks bye

    Love you ajkula66111
I have heen having the same problem with my T40.  I put the expansion memory in the orignal slot under the keyboard and it starts up like a dream.
Before I would have to start it up a few times before it would not beep and go to BIOS and then start for real.
summitzl, check out the link (you could probably find the exact one for your computer type, but here is what to look for).

I do not know if you have an expansion memory (slot is on the back of computer, first one listed on the page of how to get to it), but I pulled that one out and put it in my orignal slot since I am pretty sure the expansion one is newer.
Now, I do not know if I should try to put the old one in the expansion slot or what.
    THANK YOU!!!

  • Restoring T30 from recovery CD set and going round and round in circles!!!

    Hi!
I bought an IBM ThinkPad T30 model 2367-8G3 from a computer fair which appeared to have originally been Scandinavian by the look of its keyboard!!!
When I got it home I found it had a pirated copy of XP Pro VLK that practically every computer-fair reseller in the UK seems to use, so I wiped the HDD with a secure deletion tool and ordered a genuine set of three 2366/2367 Product Recovery CDs.
The Recovery Program will run but aborts with a basic version of XP bit no IBM drivers, manuals or anything else, nor does it continue with CD2 & CD3 - if I reboot with CD1 again the Recovery Program will start, and pkunzip will execute the unpacking of innummerable files, from both CD2 & CD3 then ask for CD1 again and start with XP Text-Mode Setup ad-nauseum until I ended up with ***Six*** Boot Menu Entries for XP Professional, no IBM tools, drivers etc.,  on any ***one*** of 'em!!! Also there is ***No IBM_Service Partition*** either!!!
    1) Are the Motherboards locality - specific rendering a US/UK-set of Recovery cds useless?
    2) Somebody said it was a BIOS setting that caused this but didn't say what the setting-change needed was! I have upgraded to BIOS Version 2.10, Embedded Controller version 1.07.
Has anybody solved this enigma, and if so can they please point me in the direction of a correct solution? I have Electronics Repair knowledge, so if there the motherboard has a locality-specific chip I can search for a dud one on ebay etc., and swap whatever it is that stores the localisation data!!!
    Many thanks,
    Chris Williams

    Chris, welcome to the forum,
it sounds as though the drive hasn't been properly deleted. Even though you have "deleted" the drive I suggest you give Secure Data Disposal a try, using it at it's lowest level should suffice without writing a report to disc. Also make sure you reset your BIOS by selecting default settings and then in the BIOS Startup > Boot menu set the cd drive as first boot device.
    Hope this helps

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-857D takes forever to erase 100MB file from CD-RW disc

My new MBP works phantastic. Only one thing is weird. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase contents on a CD-RW, about 5-10 times longer than my nearly 5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30.
    Is this normal and expected?
MacBook Pro 15'' 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   IBM ThinkPad T30 XP Pro

It might take longer, it depends on the type of drive your Thinkpad had. Most notebooks, even older ones, have 8x DVD ROM drives, while due to the thin nature of the MBP it has a 6x DVD ROM drive, which means it does work slower.

  • Radeon/xkeyboard error when starting X server

    Hello.
How can I fix the following errors that I get when I'm starting X.
(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xe8000000,0x1000000)
(EE) RADEON(0): Static buffer allocation failed. Disabling DRI.
(EE) RADEON(0): At least 17325 KB of video memory needed at this resolution and depth.
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
    > Error:          bad length in CompatMap
    >                 Output file "/var/tmp/server-0.xkm" removed
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
(EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
I have found out that the RADEON thing might be a MTRR related problem. I havent found a solution to that however.
My grafix card is a Radeon mobile 7500, with 16MB ram.
The xkeyboard error is not present when I'm starting X as root.

  • Computer reboots as soon as I connect my iPod to USB 2.0

    Here are my specs:
    - I have the new iPod 60 GigaByte hardrive version.
    - Operating System on my PC: Windows XP
    - CPU: AMD Athalon XP 1.8 gHz
    - My PC is several years old and has four built-in USB 1.1 slots. My iPod works on all of these USB 1.1 ports, albeit slow. (And when I connect iPod to these slots, I get the message telling me I have a high speed device connected to a non-high speed USB port, which I understand.)
    - I just installed a Dual-Link USB 2.0 and Firewire PCI card (from ADS tech) into an empty PCI slot on my PC. It has 3 USB 2.0 slots and two Fire-wire slots. The card is properly installed because windows immediately recognized it.
Now, when I have tested two other devices on my new USB 2.0 slots. I have tested my mouse and a logitech gaming controller (although these devices are actually based on the older USB 1.1 technology), and these devices work in the USB 2.0 slots.
But, when I connect the iPod to any of the USB 2.0 slots, I get the little bell sound meaning that the computer is recognizing it. The iPod then displays the "Do not disconnect" message. But then the computer will begin rebooting by iteself. It will then attempt to reboot windows and almost gets there, but then reboots again. It continues this never-ending cycle of rebooting until I disconnect the iPod and then the computer reboots completely. Inserting the iPod will cause it to reboot again. This happens whether or not I have the iTunes program running.
Can anyone give me insight for resolving this problem? Has anyone else had this problem before?

Mine does this too. I've got an older IBM ThinkPad T30 with USB 1 built-in, running Windows XP SP2. So, I bought a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter card. All of my other devices (external hard drives, etc.) work just fine when they're plugged into it. However, when I plug my iPod into it, Windows shows a "blue screen of death" for just a second, then it reboots the ThinkPad.
I'm betting that it's a driver issue with the PCMCIA adapter card, so I'm going to start troubleshooting there. If I find a fix, I'll post it here!

The cruisecritic board (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=585458) documents the failure in both the Mac and PC versions of Safari.

    HI,
Open Keychain Access (Applications/Utilities) Select Passwords on the left.
Delete your Google keychain. Relaunch Safari. Navigate to the Google site, login as usual. Click Yes when prompted to save your username and password.
Make sure in Safari/Preferences - Autofill you have User names and passwords selected.
If that doesn't help, from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset. Relaunch Safari.
Still no joy, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • Setting up a SAP development system

Most of my applications I have developed using SAP systems at client sites. I would love to be able to setup a development system in my own LAB.
Could anyone advise me as to how I can get hold of a copy of SAP so I can develop my applications in house.
    Many thanks
    Jason Simmons

Last night I installed "SAP Netweaver 04 TESTDRIVE SR1" with MaxDB7.5.
The target machine was an IBM Thinkpad T30 with 512MB of memory 40GB HD running SUSE 9.1.
The first step was to install SUSE 9.1 from DVD. The installation was simple enough, followed up by an automatic install of patches and updates from the SUSE website.
The install instructions for WAS are straightforward. The only snag I hit was when trying to run the install script. I had not logged in as root (as recommended in the docs), but su'd from a shell. Once in the root shell I needed to set the DISPLAY and run xhost as the user logged in. The install scripts try to display the EULA in a popup, without giving root the display permission the scripts return a message indicating that the EULA cannot be found.
Everything else was straightforward and 6.40 is running happily in the SAPGui for Java.
The only downside is that I left my SUSE DVD at home as Apache and PHP were not installed by default. Getting a quick integrated script together will have to wait until tonight.

    Description:
The National Instruments Domain Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I checked the forums at NI and found a similar problem with a computer with Windows Vista installed. I have Windows XP Professional installed on the computer, but tried the update through the self updating feature of the NI software.
After the update the problem remains exactly the same.
To find out more about the error, I checked several Windows properties to identify the cause of the problem. One thing I found was on the Services control, under Administrative Tools. After the error message during boot, the services window shows up 2 services whose status is "Stopping" and the startup type is "Automatic". This services are:
    Lookout Citadel Driver
    National Instruments Time Sincronization
I'm using an IBM ThinkPad T30 (Type 2366-BG1) with Windows XP Professional with 768Mb of memory, 80GB HDD.
Can anyone give me some hints on this matter?
    Thank you in advance.

    Good morning.
I tried the steps suggested but the problem remained. I then decided to try some aditional steps and apparently the problem is solved. I describe the steps I took bellow.
The problem was related to my antivirus / firewall solution, Panda Antivirus + Antispyware 2007.
    1. I changed the previously mentioned Windows services startup to "Manual" instead of "Automatic".
    2. Rebooted the computer.
    3. Opened the services control in Administrative Tools.
    4. Selected the first service "Citadel..." and pressed the "Start" button.
    5. After a few seconds, the firewall solution presented a window stating that the program was attempting to access the internet (or my LAN). I selected "Always allow".
    6. I repeated this step for all the others NI services. Some produced the same feedback, others didn't.
    7. Changed the startup type of the services to the values I had written down before.
    8. Rebooted the computer and everything worked fine.
It seems my firewall solution is unable to cope with a program trying to access the Internet (or network) before a user logs in.
    Thank you for your support.
    Best regards,
    Alexandre Ventura

  • Barrette Mémoire RAM non reconnue

    Bonjour, Hello,
    Google translation:
"I installed a IBM Thinkpad T30 2 strips of 512 MB memory each.
But the system does detect that either: while 512 in bank 0 / 1 - DIMM1
Nothing in Bank 2 / 3 DIMM2 indicating "empty" under SisoftSandra Lite
I tested each strip in Bank 1. They are all good 2
When installing a single bar in the bank 2 system beeps:
    1 followed by 3 short beeps followed by 3 beeps followed by 1 beep is: - --- --- --
CPU-Z detects only 512 MB in all (so 1 bar of 2)
HOW TO READ THE REACTIVATION OF BANK 2 / 3
AND HOW THE SYSTEM THAT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT 2 x 512 MB
    What is causing this error?
Thank you for your reply and advice
    Padi"

    Welcome to the forum!
Your ThinkPad has one bad memory slot, a common problem on T30 units.
You can install a single 1GB DIMM in the healthy slot and it will work just fine.
The problem is repairable, but I don't know anyone outside of U.S. who deals with it on regular basis.
Hope this helps and good luck.
    Cheers,

  • Why the Poor Run Time Refresh Quality?

    Good day,
I've developed a little piece of software to monitor a small amount of inputs from NI DAQ hardware (4 inputs).  On my developing computer, everything looks fine but this is not the case on the Run Time computer.  Usually the software starts looking fine, but when anything gets redrawn (whether it be from a button press or from another window being placed over it), the image quality is poor.  Kinda looks like the color palet in whatever redrawn area gets dropped to 8-bit.  I notice this only in the Labview application.  Everything else on the PC looks fine when redrawn.  Attached is a little image that compares two buttons, the top one having been redrawn.  Note the quality difference.
Developed in LV 7.1.  Using the RT drivers installed from the NI-DAQmx driver disc (v8.3) (RT 7.1.1)
I've tried rebuilding my app, re-installing my app, re-installing all NI software (on the RT computer), updating video drivers.
Any ideas and help as always will be most appreciated.

Sorry I didn't respond right away.  Got busy on other matters and this issue slipped my mine.  Developements have happened...
On coming back to this project, the HD on my laptop died (development comp).  Never had any display issues on this machine  (was previously posting about issue on computer where app will be run from, where issue still exists).  After re-installing everything on my new HD, I'm now experiencing this problem on my development laptop as well.
I'm using an IBM Thinkpad T30 (P4-M, 2.0GHz, 256MB, ATI 7500 Mobility).  So it used to display fine on this machine, now it doesn't, and I'm experiencing the same symptoms: grainy display from what appears to be a lower resolution colour palette (maybe 256).
Here too, this is only an issue within the development environment.  The startup Labview splash screen looks fine (again LV7.1), the blue bar along the top of all windows transitions from the darker shade of blue to the lighter shade, properly.  This issue is on the toolbar and in the developement area within Labview only.
It's weird how this appears to just come or just go.  I don't remember who, but somebody here mentioned how their problem just stopped as suddenly as it started.  And as this is localized to LV, I'm inclined to think this is not the video card, but perhaps some file/driver/dll that perhaps gets modified/updated without direct visibility.  I briefly had this issue aswell on an older Toshiba laptop about a year ago, but it eventually "fixed" itself aswell (don't remember model/specs of older Toshiba).
Anymore help and research into the issue will be most appreciated.

What do you think of putting them **all** there, formatted like I did the ThinkPad T21?   What because very obvious the more I did is that there isn't alot of information on alot of these pages.    There's not much point in including xorg.conf since we're moving towards no longer having the need for that file, and if X generates a working appropriate file to begin with ... there's no point.
What do you think of the idea of having a lspci database as well?   See some piece of unknown hardware you can go to one page on the wiki where everybody can put their lspci entries and what driver they use.
