IBM TSM vs HP DP

Hi,
Any body has experiences working with IBM TSM and HP DataProtector? Is there any comparison? which one will you use as a backup solution? They'll be used on Linux x86 platform...
Thanks

hi!
Why not consider Suncluster?
I've worked with several clusters... Trucluster, Serviceguard, MSFT and Suncluster. Suncluster is better than hp serviceguard. much smarter ...

  • Insert Key, how do i get it? -IBM TSM

    Ok, here's the situation. I am a storage engineer and i manage IBM TSM for backups. One of my pain points is when i terminal into the TSM server instance, that instance is already in overwrite or "Insert" mode. I need to be able to get out of it once in a while & since i'm on a Macbook Pro (laptop keyboard) there is no insert/help key.
    I have tried:
    fn+6
    fn+m
    fn+enter
    No luck... ideas?
    Thanks!

  • XSAN and TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager)

    Hello,
    I wanted to know if anybody had already used the TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager) solution from IBM to backup an XSAN?
    From what I have read on the IBM tech guide, the solution is fully compatible.
    Best regards,
    Cédric

    Hello Cedric.
    I have used IBM TSM 5.2 with XSAN for a whole year without problems.
    Our Xsan environment have 15 mixed INTEL&PPC Workstation, 2 Intel MDC, OSX-OSXSERVER 10.4.9, XSAN 1.4.1
    We have a 3584 LTO library with 2 frames, 4 drives LTO2 and 2 LTO3. But we use only LTO3 with TSM from MAC. Our IBM TSM Server is a PSeries 630.
    Now we are looking for a MAM system that can manage a proxy version of our archive. Parcial restores features could be very helpful for us.

  • Catalog Backup Piece Manually

    We are currently running Oracle 10.2.0.4 and IBM TSM to do our backups, but we moved to a new machine and some of our older backups are sitting on tape in TSM and i need to manually catalog these pieces, I logged a SR with Oracle and they sent me the following response
    +"There is an undocumented command that allows catalog backuppiece from tape,+
    +catalog device type 'SBT_TAPE' backuppiece '<name>';+
    +You need first configure an sbt_tape device and then you can execute the catalog device type sbt_tape+
    +command.+
    +As and example the following will catalog a backuppiece on netbackup:+
    +CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE'+
    +PARMS 'ENV=(NB_ORA_CLASS=sv2n2admoraclelogbkup, SBT_LIBRARY=/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/libobk.sl64';+
    +catalog device type 'SBT_TAPE' backuppiece 'orig-lij1qaa3_1_1';+
    +Note: This command works from 10g. The reason why it is not documented for tape is if the backupset contains more than one piece, then it will take long time to catalog backup piece. As long as there is one backuppiece per backupset, then the undocumented way should work without any issues."+
    This solution is for netbackup when i try the following in TSM
    RMAN> CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    RMAN> CATALOG DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' BACKUPPIECE 'tiaprd_monthly_rman_7pl75al9_3_1';

    Hi Grant,
    As you can see it fails but if i specify a wildcard "tiaprd_monthly_rman*" it works anybody please help.It isn´t an undocumented feature without a reason.
    Why not just use the wild card option anyway saves you a lot of time keying in unique tag names?

    Lars,
    You are very quick. Working on Sunday as well!
    I have checked the location /usr/tivoli/tsm/adint64/temp but there is nothing in that location.
    But how did you identify that this is the issue with TSM Client?
    Where will be the log file stored for MaxDB and TSM Client?
    Please let me know how to check whether the pipe is created or not?
    After changing the backup script to :

  • NW66SP8 ClusterRessource to OES11 ClusterRessource - miggui duplicatesone folder and appends a 0 (zero) at the end of the folders name

    Hi to all,
    while migrating from NW to OES, one clustered volume with one (and
    always the same) folder is duplicated with an trailing zero at the
    folders name.
    Source is
    USER:\Abteilung\Edv\
    Destination is
    /media/nss/USER/Abteilung/EDV0/
    while
    /var/opt/novell/migration/user2/log/filesystem.success.log
    shows the correct destination
    Copying USER:Abteilung/EDV/... to /media/nss/USER/Abteilung/EDV/...
    But in fact a new folder ../EDV0/ (in capitals) ist created, even if the
    folder ../Edv/.. exists. This behaviour ist just with this folder, all
    other volumes and folders worked fin.
    One thing here is special:
    I have *copied* the files to the destination volume because of the need
    to have loaded tsafs.nlm, which nback will use for miggui, with the
    option /nocluster for IBM TSM purposes. After that, I triggered a
    regular consolidation as described above and later I plan to synch files
    and trustees using miggui.
    Any hints on that silly thing?
    TIA
    Tom

    Hmmmm.... Something's very strange here anyways. Miggui *should* not
    care about the case when the destination is NSS set to long namespace.
    Either there's a bug in your version of miggui, or something else is
    weird about that folder. It's also strange that TC and Windows Explorer
    disagree on the capitalization. That again would lead me to the
    assumption that something's broken originally with the source, like the
    DOS and LONG namespaces on the source disagreeing somehow.

    No emails please!
    Untitled Document
    It sorta does. Apparently there's a bug in the miggui code that does this (although we only have it happen on OES2 SP3 to OES11 and it doesn't add a "0" at the end, it just stops processing after the main directory).
    I've been waiting for NTS to file a bug report for over a month now.
    anyway, Ramesh (the guy who kinda owns miggui) acknowledged there's a bug.
    You can either:
    1) use the migfiles command apparently instead of miggui
    or
    2) Rename the directory so that it matches, but with NSS you'll have to rename it twice. Like:
    EdvX and then again to: EDV
    Problem is with nbackup apparently that miggui uses.

  • Error message trying to enable WAAS Express

    I have one location that is giving me fits trying to enable WAAS express. The three before it went fine but I think this may be related to the fact that this one location is currently configured to support COS. The message I receive when issueing the waas enable command is

    Hi,
    When you first enable WAAS express on a device, it will define a set of policies for traffic optimization. Among those, there is one called BGP, which is conflicting with the current one and as a result, enabling WAAS fails and the error you saw is displayed
    To solve this issue, you will have to change the configuration of your device to ensure that there are no classes or policies with the same names as the ones that WAAS will configure.
    For your reference, below you can see a list of the configuration that will be added by WAAS Express by default:

    However, when we see from IBM TSM, it shows data is being moved from the tape storage to the machine by rman session. However, I cannot see anything in rman job inside database. Remember db is in 'startup nomount' state.

    Hi,
    Just a thought that having the TIMED_STATISTICS parameter set to FALSE or failing to gather the statistics for the objects using DBMS_STATS are two possible reasons for no data through the v$session_longops.

  • BR*Backup or RMAN natively? Pro and cons

    Hello,
    I'm an Oracle DBA and we are currently working on a migration of our database environnnements.
    SAP Brbackup is used for our SAP database backups on our current architecture.
    We want to uniformize our backup strategy: use RMAN for all our databases, SAP or not SAP.
    I was wondering if it was possible to use RMAN natively, without using BRBackup ?
    If we do that, is it problematic with the SAP support for our SAP environnements ?
    Future architecture will be on RAC/dataguard : is it possible to use BRBACKUP for parallelized backup on RAC standby databases with redo apply on ?
    Is brbackup really usefull for ORACLE DBA ? What are the advantages for us to use it ?
    Thanks
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,
    well let's summarize some key facts:
    - You can also use RMAN with BR*Tools (with some limitiations like you are not able to use a RMAN catalog for example)
    - You are allowed to use native RMAN with all its functionality, but you will get no support by SAP for that (sapnote #105047 - point 64)
    I personally don't like the BRTools for backup or restore and prefer native RMAN. If you use some third party backup tools like IBM TSM, it is also cheaper to use native RMAN instead of BRTools with its media management library (TDP for Oracle vs. TDP for mySAP).
    Especially if you have several nonSAP oracle databases it really makes sense to consolidate the backup strategy. I also implemented a RMAN catalog strategy for all oracle database to have a centralized management and report point. I run several Data Guard environments and RMAN is integrated much better into such environments of course.
    Well your question about the usefulness of brbackup and brrestore is very hard to answer. In my personal opinion the BR*Tools are for the mass-market of SAP users and companies who don't have their own Oracle DBAs. The tools should help you doing your daily business wihtout any knowledge about Oracle (which is pretty dangerous in my opinion - if you search this forum you see what i mean), but you have several limitations with them and there are so many things happening under the hood.
    If you know what you are doing - go for native RMAN )
    Regards
    Stefan
    P.S.: SAP will slap me now )

  • Rman backup pb

    Hi gurus.
    I do use rman and IBM TSM (TDP) for oracle hot database backup. The database to be backup is 1.2Tera and after sending about 300 GB of database, it fail with the error below.

    Now, I will like to restart the full database backup excluding those datafiles that were previously backuped.
    Can any one provide me the require rman command?
    here is the script I use for the full database backup!!
    create script b_full_closed {

    allocate channel t2 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    backup incremental level = 0
    database
    format 'db_%d_%s_%p_%t_%c'
    tag = 'dws01_dds_INC0_CLOSED';
    release channel t1;
    release channel t2;
    sql "alter database backup controlfile to ''/backup/dds_backup.ctl'' reuse";
    alter database open;
    Thanks!
    Junior DBA in distress

    It is not easy for you to restore if you backup in multiple steps. It looks like You might have a firewall or security patches that are disconnecting the session after a specified period of time. Check with SA's if any security patches applied recently which drops the connections after a specified period of time.
    To speed up the backup process increase number of channels, 2 channels for 1.2TB database is very less.

    @Markus: thanks for the hint with the quote-formatting option!
    Concerning the issue:
    Sorry, but you misunderstood the way how the general BACKINT for Oracle interface is used with MaxDB.
    See, MaxDB comes with a own BACKINT executable.
    This is a enhanced BACKINT tools that allows pipes as data input channels - which is not supported by the Backint for Oracle.
    The MaxDB Backint serves as a adapter program between the MaxDB Kernel and the backint for Oracle program.
    So instead of
    BACKINT:     D:\usr\sap\SCD\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64\backint.exe
    you should point it to the MaxDB provided adapater program.
    I propose to revisit the documentation on that topic [Connecting to a Backint for Oracle Interface |http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_7/45/746a5712e14022e10000000a1553f6/content.htm].

  • How can I delete old back-ups SAP/Oralce from TSM?

    Hi all,
    How can I set an expiration date for old back-ups so that they are deleted when reached that date? For our R/3 Enterprise 4.7 on Oracle 9.2.0.7 / AIX 5.2 we use TSM & Backint.

    expir_period will not work when using a SAP agent for backup (backint).
    for TSM, you cannot set an expiration date, but you can an expiration based on number of versions.
    check http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v1r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.itsmerp.doc_5.3.3/fbrg53m039.htm
    you need to set a value for MAX_VERSIONS in your init[SID].utl file. Then, you init[SID].bki file will keep a count for versionning.
    if you use both brbackup and brarchive, I would adive you use mutiple UTL files... and put links to multiple BKI files by adapting parameter CONFIG_FILE in your UTL file.

    May I ask a couple of questions?
    Is the original backup from a RAC instance?
    Are you using a Catalog for backup/restore?
    What happens if you just use the control file backup, can the restore find the file?
    See my question posted in this forum RMAN RAC and TSM features

  • IBM splitint

    We are looking to examine the functionality of IBM's splitint implementation for flashcopy/snapshot using DS3x00 SAN's.
    The IBM sales people are telling us we MUST use TSM for the backup once the snapshot is split from the live data. To me splitint looks like a separate program which merely manages the interaction with the SAN of splitting and resynching the snapshot. The backup itself could be done with another product (e.g. Legato) - which we have in large abundance. We don't really want to switch to another backup product unless we really must, since it will be really expensive fo license costs.
    So, the question: does anybody use IBM splitint with IBM DS SANs (I presume this is the same for any ESS), and use a backup product OTHER than TSM?
    Thanks, Andy.
