IBook 1.33Ghz on board RAM

How much RAM should come attached to the mother board? I read 512MB but when I look at my memory it shows two different entries. On for on board and one for PC2700. Shouldn't 512 be built in? Does that mean there is a 256 chip in my expansion slot?

Stephen,
The early and late 2004s apparently had 256 MB RAM and the mid 2005 had 512 MB built in. The way to tell the difference in the later model is (according to the service manual):
"The only noticeable physical difference between this model and the earlier G4
model is the appearance of the foot sockets. Check the foot sockets on the bottom case to see this difference. For this model, the foot sockets are uniformly flat with no "dimples."
However, the foot sockets are compatible with earlier models, so this physical difference is not an absolute indicator of the model type. Be sure to confirm the model type using serial number verification."
You can run the serial number here:
http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html
That should clear up the matter.
Also the earlier models used PC2100 and the later PC2700.
If you look deeper in the "about this Mac" under "more info" under "memory" it will tell you what's in each socket.

  • PXIe-7962R on-board RAM timing

    Hello everyone,
I am working with PXIe-7962R on a project for which I have written custom VHDL code and inserted it into the design using HDL Node.
I need to access the on-board (512MB) RAM and I am doing this by connecting my custom unit with the memory pins within LabVIEW.
However, I need to at least know some basic information about the timing of the RAM, because the timing is tight and I can't just poll the read strobe pin. I need to know beforehand how long the first read and each subsequent read takes so that I can schedule the operations I need to perform.
Does anyone have the information I request or is there a datasheet with the timing diagram of the on-board RAM?
    Thank you for your help!

    Hello,
Are you developing a custom adapter module? Can you provide me a list of your hardware and software? We'll likely need to get the PSE involved if you are doing custom module development.
Based on your description (accessing the pins "directly", just as you do with the DAQ module inputs/outputs by dragging and dropping them on the schematic), it sounds like are using I/O nodes from the CLIP. If you are interacting with the memory through the FPGA diagram, the latency will be controlled there. If you are accessing it directly through VHDL in your CLIP, then I honestly don't know.
Can you give me complete hardware/software configuration in regard to the FlexRIO and adapter module?
Could you also provide a screen shot of the code you are using to access the DRAM? Is it directly from your CLIP/VHDL, or on the block diagram of the FPGA VI?
    Regards,

  • IBook 1.33ghz 12"PPC G4 512 meg RAM running OS10.4.10 and USB2...

I need a external drive for my daughter's iBook (above). The iBook is not within arms reach. I have a external 250 gig fw400/usb2 harddrive, will that work with the above G4 iBook?
    Thanks much folks....

Yes that drive will work with her iBook.

  • Would a 1.33Ghz Logic Board be a straight swap for a 1.2Ghz?

My girlfriend's 12-inch iBook has lost it's backlight and I've decided to get a new Logic Board for it. It's a 1.2Ghz, 256mb built in ram, Radeon 9200 32mb board. Could I replace it with the 1.33Ghz, built in 512mb, Radeon 9550 32mb board? They look identical from the pictures I've looked at.

The screen module is the half of the iBook that doesn't have a keyboard/trackpad They can be purchased quite cheaply, due to iBooks dying for other reasons, and people parting them out.
If the inverter has failed, things will still display on the screen, and everything will work, but you won't have any backlight, so you'll only be able to see them in really bright sunlight (ok, you live in wales, this might be hard to find or a strong flashlight pointed at the screen.

  • Kernal Panics/Logic Board/RAM

My Powerbook recently died whereby I kept getting the "You must restart your computer message...."
I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it appears that the issue is Defective or incompatible RAM, as many forum messages have expressed.
Now this is fine, but I took it into my local Apple Shop who said that, given the particular specifications of the G4 12inch, RAM is split between Logic Board and somewhere else (sorry, I forget), and that I could only fix the problem by replacement of Logic Board AND RAM. Price quoted was £660. Quote was given without them turning Laptop on, although to be fair I had brought the Error Message in full into the Shop.
So my question is, could it be possible that the Logic Board is not defective, and how do I go about testing this?
I want to exhaust all avenues before I put this to bed, because given the Price quoted it would be nonsensical to get it fixed.
Secondly, is there anyway I can extract all my photo's/music from my Laptop if I have to concede defeat on this?
    Cheers in anticipation,
    mcmikeyc

    Hi MC,
Weidly, ran Hardware Test again last night before reposting and this time came up with following Error Message:
    2NVD/5/4: 2122
Do anyone know what this message means?
First thing I'd say was take it apart and examine the built in with a microscope. You'd be looking for bad/broken solder joints or solder "whiskers".
I would be possible to replace it if it was a problem if you were in the states. We have people that do that here. I'm surprised it can't be done in UK or at least we haven't heard of people doing it.
I've also heard of people running without it.
It's right there on top of the board but the top case and the top shield has to come off.
Therefore I need to replace logic board. Any ideas of cost (£660 seems high given that I could replace/upgrade Laptop for less)?.
    £660 seems outrageous!
Even DT&T services would be cheaper it's just the shipping. How do these guys in Hong Kong do it? I just bought a iBook charger for $27 shipped. Shipping was like $4 from Hong Kong?

  • Locking bar for keyboard ribbon on ABook 1.33GHz logic board broken

HELP! I can't afford £400.00 for a new logic board...
Just changing the hard drive. Very careful, but locking bar for keyboard ribbon destroyed.
Anyone know what to use as a replacement/wedge - the keyboard ribbon is a "zero insertion force" item; Apple says "new logic board needed!"

if you have an ibook (I cannot tell for sure from your post), the ribbon cable can be wedged into its slot using a strip of material cut from a credit card type of plastic (here in the US we all get "fake" credit cards in the mail that I keep just for such projects - they also make good squeegees or soft scrapers).
I just cut with a good scissors, and usually try to shape it like a very wide, or fat "T" so that the bottom just fits into the cable slot, and the "T" crossbar protrudes a bit on either side outside of the top, for easy grasping, if you need to remove it. The fit of the plastic bit should be snug, but does not need to be too tight, as the ribbon is also held in place somewhat by the ram cover.
If you have a powerbook, that's another matter entirely. If the socket is broken from the logicboard, I have heard that the socket can be re-affixed to the logic board by a good electronics repair service. If the socket is broken from the cable, then a replacement keyboard would do the trick.
    good luck,
    Ray

  • Replace 1.2GHz iBook G4 14" Logic Board with 1.42GHz?

    Hi everybody!
I have an almost 2 years old iBook G4 14" 1.2GHz. Or better said - had. The logic board died some weeks ago.
My main point here is to find out if I can replace the faulty Logic Board with something faster, i.e. 1.33 or 1.42 GHz. I have heard some rummours that the cooling systems are a bit different and I am affraid that a faster Logic Board won't fit.
Any suggestions? I would appreciate all comments on the topic.
I also wonder if anybody else has seen the same Logic Board problem. Strangely enough, it shows the symptoms of a dead fan, even though the cooling system is passive, i.e. whe the computer is cool it may even boot the system and let me log in, while when it's already warm, it dies in the middle of the startup.
If I boot the machine in target disk mode, it may run for days. Sometimes though, it may show some video problems: after being operational for some time, the FireWire symbol may freeze. I've noticed, that if I bend the bottom of the iBook a bit the symbol may start going again. Sometimes the display may go completely black. If, in that case, I bend the bottom a bit, a strange video-check-like sequence starts, i.e. going through black, white, red, green, blue and some patterns. At the end of the sequence the FireWire image may be restored.
I have checked all detachable components, i.e. extra RAM and AirPort and I am sure that they work perfectly. It is also worth noting, that the laptop may work several days in single user mode.
Thanks in advance for all comments!
    Ventzi

Well, that's exactly what I thought first, but we are talking about an iBook here. That meens, that the 'video card' is actually only a chip soldered on the logic board and the fan turns on only when the computer has reached around 65-70°C.
And I cannot say that it boots OS X...
If the laptop is cold, i.e. has been off for a while, it may boot as far as the login screen. If I then log in, it will halt while still loading the menus.
If the laptop is already warm, e.g. booting it for a second time, it won't even get to the login screen. Usually it halts right after changing the grey screen to a blue one.
And this is NOT a software problem – I experience the same behaviour when booting from the installation DVD.
Interestingly engough, though, the laptop can run for days without any problems if started in single user mode (the text interface) or in target disk mode...
I've taken it all apart and I am certain, that the preriferal devices work.
About the AHT. If the computer is cold, the Extended AHT will pass without any problems. I the computer is warm, on the other hand, AHT will either not load at all, or will halt at some point without any error message...
    Thanks for the help!
I hope that we can resolve this issue.

  • 1.42 GHz iBook G4 w/ 512 MB RAM Upgrade

I have purchased 1 GB RAM to upgrade my iBook G4. What performance enhancements, if any, will be noticeable? What effects will more RAM have?
    Thanks!

When a Mac running Mac OS X needs more RAM memory, not having it available causes some least-recently-used and not-modified RAM pages to be marked "unloaded", and that RAM is re-used for something else. If memory get still tighter, it may cause some parts of RAM to be written to Disk instead of staying in RAM.
The more you are short of RAM and use all the RAM you have allocated, the more stuff goes to Disk. Since Disk Accesses take much longer than real RAM, everything slows down. If you open one big Application, then another, and stay in the second Application exclusively, only your Application-switching time will be impacted.
Activity Monitor has a nice display that can show you how much free RAM (green) is available. It also has a display mode (when you close its main window) where it can show only the pie chart of how RAM is being used in the Activity Monitor Icon in the Dock. You can tell at a glance that your Mac is being slowed down (due to lack of RAM) when only a small area of Green memory is available.

  • IBook G4 14" - Mystery Board Piece

I'm fairly sure that my wife's 14" iBook G4 has a faulty DC-in board, so I opened it up just to double check. A piece came out when I opened the shell, labeled "10.000 ||| 4E".
    http://riverhillfootball.com/ibookG4/ibook_piece.jpg
    http://riverhillfootball.com/ibookG4/ibook_board1.jpg
    http://riverhillfootball.com/ibookG4/ibook_board2.jpg
    http://riverhillfootball.com/ibookG4/ibook_board3.jpg
Should I attempt to reattach this piece?

    Hey dlineman,
Well at first I had no clue but there are a lot of them ("y" designation)on this G4 board in my "broken" stock.
I'm looking at all of them under magnification they read: 24.576, 32.768, 10.000, 30.000 so that reminded me of crystal frequencies, probably MHz.
Then I googled KDS Taiwan and got:
    http://www.kds.info/html/companyinfo/history/indexen.htm
Daishinku Corp. and they make crystals.
So the answer to your question is yes.
That's an extremely precise crystal oscillating at 10.000 MHz and anything that gets in there would be very bad. I would use a very, very, very thin bead of epoxy around the perimeter of that cap. Make absolutely sure none gets inside and touches that plate or you'd kill that component and probably the iBook. The upside is that if it does go bad it would be relatively easy to replace if you can find the part.

  • Retrieving info off ibook with dead logic board

our ibook's logic board died, so we bought a new macbook. now we are trying to retrieve stuff off the harddrive of the ibook with firewire.
i followed the steps to use target disk mode, but the ibook starts up with a blue screen and a floating firewire symbol, and nothing shows up on the macbook at all.
the repair guy said nothing was wrong with the hard drive, so why can't i access it?
    please help!

    jayson,
The C clamp method works for some units because of an open circuit short on the logic board isolated at the video card chip in the lower left hand corner of the unit, about dead center 1.25 inch approx. away from the left/bottom edge of the iBook. By appling pressure to that area the chip is forced back down into the logic board, closing the circuit, and enabling the computer to startup, use the display and not go into kernal panic from a open circuit short. As far as getting data off of the HD, the local tech claimed my HD was erased and there was nothing viewable on it. I took it home, applied some pressure with my my hand and viola all my data, user account etc like nothing had happened...its sad but I am sitting next to my old computer clamped to the table with some cardboard shims for protection. Guess its a desktop now until I get it fixed!

  • Ibook g4 won't read RAM

I have been having a lot of issues with my ibook g4 1ghz lately. I replaced the hard drive, and in the process I am worried something may have gone wrong, because now it is only reading 128mb of built in RAM, I had a 1gb stick in there. I bought a new stick thinking maybe the old one coincidentally went bad, but upon installing the new stick it wouldn't read that either. Any help?

Are you sure it's seated properly and was handled correctly?

  • Okay to plug original iBook 1.33ghz recharger into wall?

Hey, i have an iBook g4 1.33GHz, and i was wondering if you could plug the battery charger into the wall with either of the plugs you can plug into it. You know, the long cord or the one that just goes straight into the wall. Its the one that came with my computer, so its the original one. So should I use a surge protector or is there one built into it?

You can do either. The longer cable includes a ground pin. There is no built in surge protector, so you should use one. But don't trust a surge protector if there is lightning--always unplug everything to be really safe.
    Good luck!

  • Native hdv editing on macbook pro 2,33GHz and 2GB RAM

    Hi,
I intend to start editing native hdv on my portable mac. It has a 15,4" monitor, ati mobility radeon X1600 256MB graphics card, 160GB 5400rpm hard disk and a FW800 port. The output will either be hdv to tape or DVD. Can you tell me if it will be a stable configuration?
What about the preview on my monitor - will it be hdv 1440 x 900 resolution? What will be the impact on the color correction process? And about the disk - is 5400 rpm enough or should I try to change it to 100GB 7200rpm or maybe store it all on a FW ext disk? Is it true that if you capture to your hard disk and then transfer it to a FW ext disk the chances of having dropped frames are much less?
I'm just upgrading now to HDV filming and editing so I have all these basic questions and doubts. I hope you understand and help me out. Thanks.
    MacBook Pro 2,33GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM

It's not good to use your internal drive to run OS X and import footage. Here is some information from Final Cut Pro's manual.
If you need to fit a lot of media files on a relatively small hard disk, such as a
PowerBook (or Macbook Pro) hard disk, you can recompress all your media files. This is the phase of the offline/online workflow when you create the low-resolution, offline quality media files for rough editing.
    Format______________________ Format Typical data rate
OfflineRT (using Photo JPEG)__ Varies between 300-500 KB/sec.
    DV (25)_______________________3.6 MB/sec.
    HDV (1080i)__________________3.6 MB/sec.
Your internal drive should be fine for OfflineRT editing as the format uses much less data rate, so your drive can run the OS and Final Cut Pro at the same time.
The manual tells you how to use the OfflineRT format. It's quite cool!

  • IBook late 2001 dc board question.

Hi all, i just recently acquired a late 2001 iBook G3 500 mhz. And it is in fine physical shape, with no battery. I knew it wasnt working, i went to plug it in, theres no lights on the ac adapter when its plugged in and wont turn on, so logically i was thinking it was the DC-in board, i was wondering if anyone else agrees with this, or if it something else wrong with it. Thanks!

Howdy, i took a closer look at the power adapter, and it is broken, I am glad you told me to look at this, as its a lot of work to replace the dc board. I sent out for a new power adapter yesterday, hopefully the dc board is functional also. I was wondering, if the battery from an iBook g4 would fit in to the iBoook G3? as i have an extra one around. I dont want to put it in if theres a chance to harm the computer, so i would like to know first. Thanks!

  • My BRAND NEW Ibook shows 576 MB of Ram?

So, i just got my new ibook today..and i tried installing some additional RAM..
but my ibook now shows 576 MB of ram instead of the 1 GB is should show? Do I have a problem with my installation of the ram or a problem witht eh RAM itself..
Im waiting for teh batter to be full so I can kill it and then try to reinstall the ram.
    Thanks for your help

    1) What are the specs on the additional RAM you installed? Where did you buy it?
    2) If you go to the link below, you will find detailed, illustrated PDF files to show you what items are customer-installable parts and how it's done.
