IBook 466 DVD drive model number?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what the model number is of the DVD drives used in the 466 MHz iBooks? I am trying to get a replacement drive on the cheap for a friend who has a Graphite iBook (but not the DVD drive) and if I knew the model number, it'd greatly help in my search! Thanks!

Past experience tells me that apparently identical Macs can use different parts. The safe way to confirm the part number is to open Apple System Profiler:
9: Apple Menu > Apple System Profiler.
X: Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info.

  • IBook G4 dvd drive into a MacBook Pro?

I have a 2006 model MacBook Pro with a faulty dvd drive. My kids use this machine to play games that require a dvd player. I do have 3-4 iBook G4s in the attic just gathering dust. Is it possible to remove the dvd drive from the iBook and put into the MacBook pro?
Has anyone tried it? Will it work?

What I mean by faulty is that it is dead. The optical drive will not pull in any CDs at all. It seems like something is blocking the drive, so there may be a mechanical part that just is not moving.
An external drive is an option, but I just like to have stuff working.
The iBok drive seems to be thicker, si it won't fit I think. But there's always eBay...

  • Hard Drive Model Number Change?

I just had my hard drive 'replaced' by an authorized repair center. However, the new hard drive is making a revving/clicking noise continually--as was the old. If the center actually replaced the drive, would the model number change in system profiler?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'm not sure about the model number--they could have used the same type as the original. But my system profiler also shows a serial number, and I think that would be unique to the drive.
My own hard drive is silent, and I feel any hard drive noise is worrisome. It's possible that the new drive has the same problem as the old one if it was in fact replaced. Sometimes there is a run of defective products in manufacturing. A good example is the run of iBook keyboards where the lettering was especially prone to chipping off.
You should bring this to the attention of the repair center while it is still under warranty.
    Good luck!

  • How to install iLife on an iBook without DVD drive

Some time ago I bought iLife 8 only to find it was on a single DVD which I could not use on my twin-USB iBook with only a CD drive. Now a friend has suggested that the DVD could perhaps be copied to 6 Cds and loaded that way. Toast has a spanning facility to spread a big file over multiple disks. Or could my iBook be hooked to a big Mac with a DVD drive, and the program transferred by Target Disk Mode. Does anyone know if either of these techniques would work?

Of the two, target mode would be far more efficient (and less risky -- in terms of software data corruption). I have in the past installed OS X on a machine with a poor DVD drive, so iLife should be no problem.

  • Possible to swap ibook G4 dvd drive into macbook pro?

My unibody macbook pro's dvd drive has stopped working. Whenever i put in a dvd in, it just gurgles and tries to churn the disk to no avail. I was wondering if it were possible to harvest the dvd drive out of my old ibook g4 and put it into the macbook pro.

AFAIK, the drives are of a different height...thus that iBook drive won't fit.

what is exact model name of dvd drive on satellite a100-192?
can you please check it from device manager?

Try to download the user manual for this notebook.
The user manual you will find on the Toshiba page.
There you will find the drives which are delivered with the Satellite A100.
But you have to consider that it depends on the notebook which drive is installed.

Bought this laptop in December and tried to open CD-R with pictures, but the files will not open.   I don't even see the CD files listed.   The CD spins for a minute then stops.
No problems with DVDs.    Is there a fix ?

Yes, it's called warranty replacement of the CD/DVD drive due to failure of the CD side.
As stated under the 'Repair' link at the top of the page, "To resolve your issue, you can send your unit to the Toshiba repair depot. The Toshiba repair depot can provide both In Warranty or Out of Warranty service. To initiate this process please call Toshiba Support at 800-457-7777."
Note that you can also have warranty repair work performed by a Premier Service Center.  Find if one is in your area by using the locator at the same 'Repair' link.

    k...
Boot the mini into TD mode
Connect it to the "other" Mac
Insert the install disk in the "other" Mac
Start the installer which will reboot the "other" Mac
Once the "other" Mac has restarted and is running from the install disk, you should be able to select the Mini's drive (the FW disk) as the install destination. If not, go into the Disk Utility (under the "Utilities" menu) and check out the FW disk. You may need to "repair" it, repair permissions or reformat it depending on the condition of the disk and the type of partition it contains.

  • DVD Drive Region Code.... help?

On my dad's iBook G4 almost every dvd I get from the store comes up with the error message "*The DVD-Video disc region code does not match the drive region code.* (You cannot change the region code for your drive)"
I remember a while ago one of our relatives visited from England and probably played a dvd or two from England so I'm assuming that's how this happened. Is there any way to change the drive's region code? I'm guessing re-installing the OS might do it, but that would be last resort if my dad even considers it. I've tried VLC and others, but the OS seems to make the rules.... any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks:)

As per the conditions imposed on the rest of the world by the MPAA mafia, a DVD drive can be set to play DVDs from one of the 9 regions ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVDregioncode ) for a maximum of 5 times by the end-user. As a backup, there is a 'service reset' that can be used up to 4 times to reset that count, which means that a DVD drive's region can be changed an absolute maximum of 20 times.
The 'service reset' is used by service centers, etc., knowing that the unilluminated users will usually exhaust their 5-count accidentally, like in this case. I'd like to think that a Genius in an Apple Store o an Apple Service Center should be able to carry such a reset out. There are also utilities in the wild that allow you to do this, so you might want to Google your way around and see if you can find one for your specific Mac and DVD drive model. Note that this service reset is perfectly legal, does not invalidate any warranty or incur in the wrath of any law enforcement agency.
Reflashing the firmware on the drive with microcode hacked to be region-free also solves the problem. However, from the technical point of view, this is risky as any failure in the process will result in dead drive with no warranty and, from the legal point of view, breaks scads of different national laws making you liable for prosecution (if caught).

  • Satego X200-21D: TS-L632D DVD-Drive doesn't read and burn DVD-R DL

    Hallo,
I have problems with my SATEGO X200-21D DVD-Drive
TS-L632D to read an burn DVD-R DL discs.
I contacted the Toshiba-support via e-mail ans asked
for a new drive-firmware, but the answer did not solve my problem.
There are only updates in the toshiba download area,
but not for my drive model. I can send my notebook
for money to a service partner, to check this problem.
I can not understand this! I bought a highend notebook
for 1.700 EUR and it is no firmware update support
available to solve problems with newer discs?
If i search for this problem in the WEB, there an a lot of
questions and problems with reading and burning
DVD-R DL discs with this drive modell!
    How can it be???
I hope for some hints to get a firmware drive update
to fix the problems reading and writing DVD-R DL discs.

    Hi,
yes I have got the TS-L632D drive and not the TS-L632H - that is true. But why is no firmware update available for TS-L632D,
because also this drive has problems with DVD-DL discs!? I payed 1700,- EUR for my Thoshiba notebook with the
DVD-drive TS-L632D. And in my opinion it can't be, that for this drive version is no firmware update available!!!
Other companys (f. i. DELL , SAMSUNG) support this drive version and offer firmware updates for this drive modell.
It is a fact that my DVD-drive has problems to read and burn DVD-DL discs! This is a known fact for many drives and therfore
exists firmware updates for the DVD-drives to fix this problem. But why not for my drive modell???
My be it was an error to by a Toshiba Notebook!? I am a customer and I don't care what special
DVD-drive modell is in my notebook (TS-L632D , H or wwhat ever)!!!
My message to Thoshiba: "Pleas help me to solve my problem!!!"

  • DVD drive not recognized in 466 Graphite SE Clamshell

    Hi,
Any ideas on why a dvd drive might not be recognized or work in a 466 Graphite SE clamshell. The drive powers up and spins, but no reading. If the drive is 'broke' or 'dirty' wouldn't the system profile still recognize the SR-8175 drive. I don't know how the profiler knows that a drive is there...Also if the connection to the motherboard or the frive ribbon cable is faulty, then would/could it still spin like it wants to read...Any suggestions as to what's up or how to best diagnose...Like what might Apple hardware test disk do (have never done, and might have one around:) Oh this clamshell has a partitioned drive running Panther and Tiger on each...not that such should matter...Help appreciated...Rick

+Also if the connection to the motherboard or the frive ribbon cable is faulty, then would/could it still spin like it wants to read+
Hi Rick - It may be that only part of the connection is there. Perhaps it's getting power but not something else? The drive (if guaranteed to be problem free) should have no issues with your ibook. I'm not even sure if using something like 'patchburn' would make a difference or not. I should just work.

  • Will this DVD drive will work with my indigo iBook?

So I found this cheap DVD drive, will it work in my indigo iBook? Can I install the normal blue thing of the cd or it doesnt fit? Can it work with the normal bezel it has? Thanks, I would like to put it to my indigo to watch DVDs!
More info on the drive http://www.titannotebook.com/product/components/storage/sd-c2302.asp

I should work. However, you'd be better off scanning the xlr8 database looking for one that has been proven to work. Search the model as 'Apple ibook' and the drive as DVD Rom and it will list a bunch of options.
The blue bezel can be modded to fit or the standard PC type bezel can be modded to fit. Here's some other links to look at...
