Ibook 500 mhz upgraded to 700 mhz

I've upgraded my ibook 500 mhz to a 700 mhz by switching the logic board. Everything seemed to be working well, unfortunately now I can install any new system software on it. Everytime I try to install either OS 9 or OS X from different CD's, an installer error occurs. With one CD the screen changes with coloured lines through it, other cd's give me installer errors. Has anyone ever heard of something like this before?
Thanks.

The fact that the two models have different methods for resetting the PMU should have been a clue to you that this would not work. I'm afraid you are going to have to try something different.
The logic board for the 500 MHz model can be found at PowerBook Tech. If you talk to Daniel there, he may be able to tell you which other model will work. (I believe you could use the 600 MHz model and have it work okay, too, but he will know for certain.) He may be willing to swap boards with you.
Good luck.

  • Connecting ibook 500 Mhz running Tiger 10.4.4 to Power MacIntosh 9500/132

I had a cable plugged into the side of my ibook (500-MHz PowerPC G3 processor) in the slot <...> and then into my Power MacIntosh 9500/132 in its slot <...>
I then selected chooser in the apple menu and could access files and software from each machine, allowing me to operate between the two macs to put together my community newsletter.
I upgraded my ibook which now runs Tiger 10.4.4( which is great) but I can no longer connect to my Power Macintosh which has all my software for the newsletter.
    Can any one help.
    Thank you

I'm not familiar with the Power Mac 9500. Is that in
    OS 9?
If it is, have you retained OS 9 boot capability on
the iBook? If so, you may have to use it. If not, you
may have to put it back on.
Which OS were you using on the iBook before you
    upgraded to 10.4.4?
You may get some better ideas if you post in the
    forum for pre-G3 desktops:

My Power Macintosh 9500/132 uses Mac OS 9.
My iBook original came with MAC OS 9.0.4, and MAC OS 10.0.1, when I upgraded to Tiger 10.4.4 the classic environment disappearred.
I still have my MAC OS 9 discs, but if I reinstall them won't I loose everything I have installed with MAC OS 10.4.4?

  • Can I install Tiger in a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4?

Can I install Tiger in a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4, or is it better to stick with 10.3.9? I'm having some problems so I was going to wipe he hard drive and re-build everything from scratch o I was wondering if migrating to OS X 10.4.9 is worthwhile or even compatible with this PCU. Thanks.

Yes you can run 10.4 on your dual 500, I have a dual 450 (I overclocked it to 550...) and it runs pretty fast. You need a minimum 192 MB of RAM to install it and a minimum 128 MB of RAM to run it. I would suggest having at least 512 MB of RAM when running 10.4.
What problems are you experiencing? If it's just lagging and seeming slow it may just be worthwhile to clean some temp files and clean up your disk. IMHO, 10.4 is a much better system than 10.3, and runs much smoother. I can guarantee you that your system will run much smoother if you wipe the disk clean and put a fresh install of 10.4 on there, and also get a decent amount of RAM in there. After I upgraded my RAM to 1.5 GB, I noticed a substantial difference in speed, and got a lot less spinning color wheels. But one thing that you need to always keep in mind is to KEEP YOUR DISK CLEAN!!! Clean the temp files often and limit your internet downloading. If you keep your computer on all of the time, restart it every once in a while. There's a lot of little things you can do to increase speed in OS 10.4. Use spotlight and recent applications. Fill up your dock. Don't clutter the desktop, etc. There's plenty of articles on the net to help increase speed without adding anything else to your system, just navigating through the OS differently.

  • 400 (or maybe 500) Mhz Titanium won't start.

I've adopted an old friend's Ti (of unknown configuration/OS) to see if I can get it to run. (He said he hasn't used it for over a year...but the last time he did use it, it started without a problem.)
I've read all (most) of the discussions about non-starts.
    Questions:
    1. Can I safely use my 65W 1 GHz Titanium power adapter to start the dead Ti?
    2. Can I safely use my 1 GHz Titanium main battery in the dead Ti?
    3. Does the 400/500 MHz Ti power adapter have a light on the plug that is supposed to go on (like the newer Ti's)?
At this juncture...I don't know whether the problem is A) the Power Adapter; B) the main battery, and/or; C. the PRAM battery.
(I'm trying the AC Power adapter for 48 hours with the main battery removed solution.)
Last, but unrelated, question: Will the 133 MHz DRAM work in the older (100 MHZ DRAM) Ti? I have 500 MBytes of newer Ti memory sitting here unused (I upgraded the 1GHz Ti to 1 GByte of DRAM).
    Thanks.....

Hi, John. Yes, you can use the 1GHz Tbook's battery and AC adapter safely with the slower Tibook — they'll work fine. And yes, the old AC adapter is supposed to have a ringlight on its plug. If the adapter works and the light comes on when you connect that adapter to a different Powerbook, the DC-In board in the old PB is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the light doesn't come on with another Powerbook either, the adapter may be faulty. Use the 65W adapter to charge the old Tibook's batteries, then test the older adapter with the machine it belongs to. It's possible that the 45W adapter's light won't come on when it's being used with a Powerbook that expects a 65W adapter — I'm not sure about that.
Assuming that isn't the problem, your internal backup battery is undoubtedly dead after so long. That alone would prevent the Tibook from starting, and recharging it may solve your problem. It won't take 48 hours to do so without any main battery in place; 4-6 hours should do the trick.
PC133 RAM that worked in the 1GHz Tibook should also work fine in the older one. It will operate at PC100 speed.

  • PB Ti 500 MHz ventilator don´t work

    Hello
I have a PB Ti 500 MHz. First time the ventilator only works with fast speed. I´m not shure if there is a low speed, like by my PB Ti 550 Mhz.
Now the PB becomes very hot, but the ventilator don´t start working.
The ventilator has 3 wires, a black, a red and a yellow.
When I give 5 Volt to the red and the black wire the ventilator works.
Is there a software avaiable to test the ventilator?
Is there a software avaiable to control the temrature. (for Mac Os 10.2.8 or 10.3.9)
    Greats by rettho

    Hi rettho,
I have only a ventilator from a PB Ti 550 MHz. This ventilator has only a red and a yellow wire. I tried this ventilator, but it don´t work too.
Did someone know, which funktion the yellow wire has?
I don't know, but the 400/500MHz Tibooks are significantly different than all later models, so it's not surprising the 550 fan connections are not the same.
Before I work with mac OS 10.3.9 when the ventilator work. Now I have 10.2.8 installed to test and the ventilator don´t work. Is it possible, when I install Mac Os 10.3.9 that the ventilator work again?
Is it possible? Certainly. We've heard many reports here over the years from people saying that a software update/upgrade has affected the fan's behavior. The only way to know for sure will be to do the upgrade.

    Allan et al,
Some of these places are not-for-profits... schools are shedding old iMacs and eMacs.>
Exactly, that's what I do here in Chicago. Here's my blurb:
"I gather, restore, upgrade and repair computers. These computers are then donated to schools in the inner city. These are typically high needs schools. Many have no computers at all!
The iMac in particular is very desirable in these situations:
    a) It has a small footprint and is self contained.
    b) I have a large amount of educational software that I load them up with.
    c) The kids love them. I have seen iMacs get hugged. I never see that with any other computer.
Most of the children who are at these schools have no computers at home. In cases I'm working with now this is true for all of the children. The ones I donate provide the first hands on experience they have ever had.

  • Want To Use D-Link AirPlus G Card DWL-G630 On 500 MHZ Pismo

I bought a D-Link AirPlus G Card DWL-G630 for my work PC, but I want to also use it on my 500 MHZ Pismo. Does anyone know if there is a way to make it work?

    styler,
There is only one third-party wireless driver that I am aware of which supports 802.11g PC cards and it is OrangeWare:
    http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html
Unfortunately, your card is not in the supported list. OrangeWare's driver supports cards that use the Atheros chipset, and apparently your card uses either the Prism or ACX 111. As is often the case, D-Link and others will often switch chipsets yet keep the same model number of the card and give it a revision number.
I am unfamiliar with Windows, but you should be able to find the specs on your wireless card when inserted in the card slot. But unless it has a Ralink or Broadcom (Apple) or Atheros chipset, I don't see how it will work.

  • Will a Built-in Modem pulled from a Dual 867mhz work in my DP 500 Mhz  Mac

Will a Built-in Modem pulled from a Dual 867mhz work in my DP 500 Mhz (Gigabyte Etherent) Mac?
The info on the modem is:
    UO1MO85.00
The connectors are compatible, but I wasn't sure if the modem itself was.
I'm looking to start faxing with my computer which is why I need a modem.
    thanks,
    Hairfarmer

    Hi
Unfortunately I think they may be right. For my internal modem the Apple System Profiler lists a number of regions including the UK. This seems to imply they're region specific and a modem from the US is unlikely to work. I expect the actual hardware is the same, but the firmware contained in the ROM on the modem card is different.
Apple sell an external USB modem for around £35 on the UK on-line Apple Store. It's primarily intended for Mac Minis which no longer ship with an internal modem, although it may work on other computers with the appropriate OS version number.

  • 2nd hard drive for Dual 500 MHz Sawtooth

I have a G4 dual 500 MHz sawtooth with a 40 GB hard drive and 1 GB of RAM. I don't have any PCI slots left and I was hoping to add a second drive. Is this possible? Does this model have the ribbon and power supply for a second drive? I've been searching the discussions, but haven't found any info on this.
Also, is an ATA-133 drive fast enough for this model or could I put something in that's faster?

    Hi, Al -
    I have a G4 dual 500 MHz sawtooth...
A dual 500MHz G4 is not a Sawtooth model; the Sawtooths are the G4 (AGP) models.
Your dual 500MHz G4 is a Gigabit Ethernet model.
Yes, it does come pre-equipped to accept a second internal drive - the mounting sled, data cable connector, and power cable connector for it are already present.
The built-in controller is an ATA/66 controller. This means it has a hardware limit of not being able to 'see' more than 128GB of drive size. If a drive larger than that is connected, only 128GB of it will be available. This is a drive size limit, not a volume limit; partitioning will make no difference.
The new drive should be an ATA (or PATA, Parallel ATA) drive, not a SATA (Serial ATA) drive. Although the bus speed is ATA/66, newer drives are often ATA/100 or ATA/133 - that's okay, such a drive should work fine though it will operate at ATA/66 speed. Since that is the case, there is no advantage in paying extra for speeds in excess of ATA/66 - unless the plan is to be able to use it at a later time on a newer machine with a faster bus.
Typically the original drive will have been jumpered as Master. Set the jumpers on the new drive to Slave. Which drive is which makes little difference; the designations of Master and Slave are addresses, and do not establish a priority or preference - either can be used as the primary boot drive.
If your original drive happens to be a Western Digital, it may be using a third jumper setting, Single - this is often used by WD drives when it is the only device on the bus. If this is the case, it will need to have its jumpers reset to Master (or Slave, as desired) when adding a second drive.
When there are two devices on the bus, and Master and Slave are used, there can be only one of each.
Do not use Cable Select on that model G4.
Another option would be to use a firewire drive. Your machine is firewire bootable. Such drives offer a lot in convenience, in the ability to move them from one machine to another quickly.
Some cost savings in having a firewire drive can be achieved by purchasing a firewire drive enclosure (rather than a complete drive), then installing a relatively inexpensive ATA drive.

  • Trying to boot Al 1.5GHz PB with hard dirve from Ti 500 MHz PB.

For the curious on how this mess started, see explanation at end.
I am trying to boot an Aluminum 1.5 GHz Powerbook with the Hard Drive from a Titanium 500 MHz PowerBook. It has OS 10.4.9 on one of the partitions. When first turned on, I got the ? while it looked for a bootable drive/partition, then the grey screen with the Apple and the wheel just kept spinning. I also started with the option key down and it showed the OS 10.4.9 boot partition, which I choose, and got the same grey screen and the spinning wheel. So I think it is accessing/reading the drive. I note that I was able to boot my first generation G5 1.8 GHz PowerMac desktop with this drive attached as a firewire drive in an external case.
Looking at Mac help, it says when in the grey screen with spinning wheel it is checking out the drive and could take hours, but its only a 20GB partition, so could it take that long? (Since I only have one battery and no charger, I hate to have it just sit there over night)
There is a CD in the drive. Is there anyway I can remove it without booting, so I can replace the CD with a bootable one and boot from the CD? I guess I can also try putting the Al Powerbook in firewire mode and make sure it can access the hard drive completely and run some diagnosics.
Any other suggestions on getting this Al PowerBook to boot from this hard drive, other than letting it check out the drive for hours? (I'll need a power adaptor, which right now I don't have)
This hard drive has 4 partitions on it, OS-9 is in a separate partition. I am pretty sure this Al PowerBook will not boot OS-9, but will run classic. Since the HD has OS-9 drivers on it, is that the problem?
How I got into this mess:
My son was home from college. He had this Al PB charging on the breakfast nook table, and the dog got tangled in the cord and pulled it off. This broke the DC in jack, leaving part of it in the jack, so a new AC adaptor would not work. He had to leave, so I put his HD into my old 500 MHz Ti PB, it booted, and he could leave to go back to school with at least all his files accessible. I pulled the DC in/sound card out of his Al PB (a major undertaking) and got the rest of the plug out of the Jack. I would now like to get my hard drive to boot in his Al PB, as I have some classic programs I would like access, though not 100% required until he returns for Christmas and we can swap hard drives back. (I am pretty sure the Al PB will not boot in OS 9, but it will run classic)

If I put in a spare HD (or external) can I use the full version of Tiger to install Classic, or does that have to come from the original install CD's that came with the PB?
It has to be the original CDs.
Any way to get the CD out if the machine is not booting?

  • IMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 not connecting to internet

I have a iMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 running Tiger. We had it running to the internet fine in one location, connected to a switch to DSL. We moved it and wipe the computer. Now I am trying set it up to connect to the internet using the Internal Ethernet, but it will not connect. It will connect to all of the computers on the network but not the Internet. The dot in front of the Ethernet is yellow and says "Built-in Ethernet is currently active. Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and my not be able to connect to the Internet."
I can connect a Powerbook to the internet using the same line and works fine. Does any one have any suggestions?

    Dear Tonele,
*Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."*
Who is your DSL provider? I have Verizon and couldn't connect this morning because of a bad IP address. Luckily a Mac Tech support guy (800-567-6789) talked me through reconnecting my currently wonky iMac.
He literally had me take the ethernet cord out of both the modem and my 'puter. Then he had me plug it into a different socket on my modem. I then used the control panel to tell the computer that it was going to connect by dialup. I saved that setting, then told it to connect by ethernet and saved that.
Only then did little blue let me get rid of the bad IP address.
Hope that helps and All the best,
    Irene

  • [solved] iBook 300 MHz PPC and archlinux

    Hello everybody,
I just want to ask if archlinuxppc works with this IBook (300 MHz, maybe 366 and in best case 400 MHz). I'm using archlinux since about 3 years on my desktop (x64) and in the past on my old notebook (Intel 2,6 GHz 512 MB Ram) ... currently I'm trying to buy this ibook and I want to install archlinux too (since I've heard from archlinuxppc). I just want to work with it (writing, Internet, a little bit music and, if possible, watching simple movies). As I've heard, you can't compare a 300 ppc with an 300 MHz Intel computer. It seems as if a ppc is a little bit faster than an intel, isn't ist? I've worked successfully with archlinux an an 1 GHz Notebook and it worked fine. So the simple question is, how does archlinux will work in this item?
    regards

I've just bought this ibook clamshell and so I'm currently trying to install archlinuxppc on this item. But there were some problems, some of them I've already fixed, but now I'm not getting forward.
First of all was a mechanic problem, disassembling the ibook for installing a new hard disk. So the current configuration of this item is:
    300 MHz ppc processor
currently 170 MB RAM (I already ordered 512 MB Ram, so I'll get 544 MB Ram on this item very soon)
    40 GB harddisk
the first step was to download a working archlinuxppc ISO. I've got the "wrong" one, just about 30 MB for installing via ftp (2008 core dump ftp iso). But I successfully installed archlinux on an intel machine via ftp so I thought, this will be nearly the same.
Configuring the harddisk was not as easy as usual. I've always used cfdisk for preparing the harddisk, but this doesn't work in this case, so I had to use another, textbased, program. But I solved this problem after a while.
Setting the mountpoints was no problem. But there was one thing that I was worried about during the whole installation until this step. An error message appeared every 5 minutes, saying:
INIT: Id "c0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
The next step was to select the packages. At this point I recognized that I've downloaded the wrong iso image for the first time. After chosing "CD" as source for the packages setup mounted the cd from /dev/hdc in /src but was not able to find the needed packages. So I started the setup again with the help of ftp installation.
When I got to the point of selecting packages there where 3 Servers available:
    ftp://ftp.archlinuxppc.org
    ftp://xentac.net
    ftp://ftp.archlinuxfr.org
by chosing the first ftp I was able to download the package list. Chosing the "base" package list and all of its contents I got the error
    unable to download pacman
so I returned back to the ftp choice and tried the 2nd and 3rd ftp. But the setup was not able to download the package list from these servers.
Error fetching package list from server
(I checked the network connection and it worked)
I've decided to get the complete core Image with the packages inside (instead of using the network installation). As I've seen there was a new version from 2009 so I downloaded this one.
Everything works fine until I got to the packages choice. setup was not able to find the /src/core/pkg directory. I've checked the cd (after mounting manually on the ibook and now on a second machine), there is no directory called "core" neither a subdirectory called "pkg".
I was a little bit confused so I've downloaded all pacakages manually on my Desktop and copied them to an usb-stick into a directory called "core/pkg"
After chosing "SRC manually mounted" instead of cdrom setup was able to find the packages.txt (list of contents) so I checked the whole "base" list. Now setup was able to unpack the pacman-package ... but there appears the next error message:
    Installing packages...
    /arch/setup: line 955: pacman.static: command not found
    Package Installation FAILED.
so ... what now? currently I got 2 questions.
the first one: how am I solving the last error to be able to install the packages?
the second one: is my processor an 686er? I don't know if this description is the same like the intel processor description? Is this at ppc processors the same?
    with best regards
    Martin Schuchardt

  • Leopard on iBook 600 MHz PowerPC G3

Is it possible to run a iBook 600 MHz PowerPC G3 with 640 MB SDRAM with Leopard??? And if so, because some of you jokers will say yes, how do I do it???
    Cheers,
    Johan

That would be better taken up on a different web site, since detailing ways around Apple's installer restrictions are iffy per the terms of the Discussions. If you search the web for something like "leopard install unsupported", you'll come across a number of pages of discussion about the issue.
    Regards.
