IBook alternates between blue screen and freezing up

About a week ago my iBook froze up on me and I had to restart it. Now, sometimes it restarts with just the blue screen and sometimes it starts up normally only to freeze up about 2 minutes into it. I can operate in safe mode but I can't figure out the problem. Suggestions?

Ok guys, I know it's been a while since I initially posted my problem so here's the update. While my iBook operated for a long time in safe mode it eventually began to have the same problem within the day; a temporary reprieve which I used to move my important documents to my iPod for future safe keeping. I signed up for the 5 day tech support and eventually I determined that I needed to send my iBook in for a certified technician to look at. Sure enough, they told me it was a faulty logic board - $680.95 + labor + tax. Since my iBook isn't worth that much anymore I guess it's time for a new computer. The people at Apple said that my iBook was not one of the ones with the defective logic boards they recalled (last year?). So I guess what I'm looking at now is - can I turn in my dead iBook in for some kind of discount when I buy a new one?

  • Iphone is flipping between blue screen and apple screen

My iPhone just went black and dead and has done this almost daily for the last 3 weeks.
I was told to reboot and did so each time.  Now, after the last black screen...after the reboot, the iPhone is just flipping between the "apple" screen and a blue screen.  ???

  • Stuck between blue screen and cosmos (login)

Last week the latest security patch (snow leopard 10.6.4) and Safari patch came out. I was busy at the time so I waited to install them. After I got around to doing it, my late 09 i5 iMac will not get to the login screen. It posts, then the grey screen goes away to the blue screen which thinks for a bit and then kicks it over to the "cosmos" screen (which is fine so far), but after a second or two it goes back to the blue screen, thinks some more, goes to the cosmos, etc.
    Things I have tried:
Used the setup disc to verify/repair perms and verify disk (A-ok, no need to repair)
    Reset PRAM/NVRAM
Attempted to boot into safe mode (no luck)
Boot into 64bit mode (hey, why not)
I have already reimaged from Time Machine once, and it took 6 hours so I'd like to avoid that again. Does anyone know a solution to get it to boot, or is there a way to roll back updates without going the Time Machine route?

Thanks for your reply Scott. I'm trying to avoid that if possible, but I can't see why that would be a problem. Just trying to see if I can save the current state before I go and do that.

  • I have a MacBook Pro, it recently started freezing upon startup. It would get to a blue screen and just sit there. I've tried booting in safemode to run disk repair and still doesnt help. If I do manage to get past the blue screen, it still freezes

My mac keeps freezing upon startup. It will get to the blue screen and promptly freeze. If I manage to get past the blue screen, and open up youtube on google chrome, it will freeze before it loads youtube. I've tried safeboot and disk repair, nothing seems to work. I even tried to factory reset it but it wont connect to my internet when I reboot with power + option.. any ideas?

This can be used to boot the machine and delelte enough files to get it to boot normally.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Read about storage drive so you can store your extra stuff.

  • My iPhone would just randomly give me a blue screen and then restart--did that a bunch of times between Tuesday and last night. As of last night, it WILL NOT come back on. iTunes says it's in recovery mode....what does all of this mean???

Tuesday night I was texting a friend and when I went to open her message, my screen went blue and restarted. I just wrote it off as weird and went on about my business. Later that night, I tried to turn on my phone and it would not turn on. I plugged it up, held down the power button, and pressed the home button all numerous times. I looked online and it said to do a "hard reset" by holding down the power and home button at the same time--my phone then came on. Throughout Wednesday, it would give me a blue screen and restart--nothing major just really annoying. I took it to the local Verizon store where I bought the phone from and he said that it was some type of hardware defect and I was still under my year warranty so I could get a new one for free--the free phone won't be here until tomorrow, Saturday. I took it home and it didn't give me any trouble for a couple of hours. The next day it was cooperating and then I left town for a little while and it acted up (blue screen and then restarting) a few times. When I got home, it acted up again and so I restarted the phone and it was working fine. A few minutes later, I tried to check my messages and the phone was off again. No matter what I do, my phone will not come back to life. It had at least 45% battery last time I looked at it. I decided to plug the phone up to my computer and see what it did--my computer recognizes that there is a phone hooked to it and it says that it's in "recovery mode". It also said that if I'm having issues with my phone, that I need to reset the phone via iTunes. I guess the questions that arise are
    1. Why is my phone doing this?
    2. If I reset my phone, will it go back to working again? I ask that because I don't want Verizon to charge me $300 when they send me the replacement phone and I won't need it (assuming that the phone decides to work once it's been reset).
    3. What type of hardware defect is this that is causing this issue, not only with my iPhone 5S but others as well?
    4. Shouldn't people be notifying Apple and letting them know that they need to fix this issue?
    5. Should I report this issue to Apple even though I didn't buy the phone directly from them, but through Verizon?
Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! This whole situation has me stressed out and seriously confused.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand you have been experiencing issues with your iPhone restarting and showing you a blue screen.  I wont be able to give you an exact answer as to why this is happening.  However, this is the most relevant troubleshooting article for this issue.  This article also provides options to reach out to us via phone for additional assistance.

  • Iphone 3gs freezing/screen flashing between password screen and turning off timer. Any ideas what to do please?

can you help please? Phone having funny fit, screen flashing between password screen and turning off timer. Then screens merging.. Yuk!

    Hey kathlovesparis,
First, I would reset the device:
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
via: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
And if that doesn't resolve the issue then I would backup the device to iTunes and restore it. Just be cautious and back up first, since restoring deletes all content and settings:

  • Hi, my iphone its in recovery mode and when i restore my iphone 5s loading show the blue screen and show note on itunes (unknown error 14) please i need your help please . thanks

Hi, my iphone its in recovery mode and when i restore my iphone 5s loading show the blue screen and show note on itunes (unknown error 14) please i need your help please . thanks

In the article Resolve iOS update and restore errors this is what it says about error 14:
    Check your USB connections
    Related errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4005, 4013, 4014, or “invalid response."
If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you may be unable to update or restore.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use the USB cable that came with your device, or a different Apple USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port directly on your computer. Don't plug it into your keyboard.
    Try a different computer.
If necessary, resolve any further issues with the USB connection, then with your security software.
If you're still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues by following the next section.

  • Won't wake up from sleep, sometimes get blue screen and can't get it to wor

I have two problems that may be related. I am using a PowerBook G4 (Tiger 10.4.5). Sometimes when I turn it on I get a blue screen and that's it. Nothing else will come up. I have to do a forced shut down and then restart it with the shift key depressed and run repair disk permissions and then it works okay till the next time it decides to return to the blue screen (once a day approx.).
Also, sometimes it goes to sleep and will not wake up. I have to shut it down and then restart it (sometimes getting the dreaded blue screen).
This just started happening after I installed Tiger.

Hi, vfv. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. You wrote: "Sometimes when I turn it on I get a blue screen and that's it. Nothing else will come up. I have to do a forced shut down and then restart it with the shift key depressed and run repair disk permissions and then it works okay till the next time it decides to return to the blue screen (once a day approx.)."Your description suggests a corrupted or incompatible Startup or Login item. As Adrian suggests, my "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you determine which Startup or Login item is causing the problem.
    2. As to the sleep problem, here are some ideas for you:2.1. If you are using a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, see "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: My wireless mouse and keyboard won't wake my computer.".
2.2. Your Mac maybe frozen or hung. Troubleshooting freezes and hangs is not unlike troubleshooting kernel panics: the steps are virtually the same. For a more exhaustive troubleshooting procedure, you could use the steps in my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.Good luck!

  • Blue screen and spinning wheel at startup

I had permission problems (locked time machine drive) so I did a full time machine restore.
Did the restart after the restore.
    Machine won't reboot.
I get 'bong', apple logo on grey screen as per normal.
Then blue screen and spinning wheel for approx 7 seconds
Then blue screen and black pointer for approx 2 seconds
The blue screen spinning wheel / black pointer repeats.
Also can't start up from Snow Leopard DVD.
I get exactly the same scenario.
I have held down the power key at got the tone.
    Still won't start.
    HELP!!!!!
It's an Imac (white one) 1.8Gig Dual with 1.5 gig of ram.
    Running Snow leopard.
I can see my disc over the ethernet; it is still there as it was sharing with my other machine.
Not sure if this helps me at all?
    Cheers

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you cannot boot from your installer DVD on the iMac, then you can try connecting to your other computer via Firewire cable and use Target Disk Mode to boot and install from the other computer - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire

  • On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

I managed to boot the computer and get the desktop to show. I now have a "repaired" computer. There are several problems that have cropped up. One is that I can only start up now in Safe Boot mode. Is there a way to turn it off? Also, I do not have a sound list, so I can't access anything requiring audio. Google Chrome only shows up as a white screen. Pictures that loaded before don't load in browsers, etc. Any suggestions? I figure I should reinstall Mac OS Lion for starts, maybe even do a mirror backup and reformat the drive. I think this drive has turned into scrambled eggs...what a headache!

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro: Will randomly blue-screen and Safari repeatedly crashes.

I bought my MacBook Pro in June/July of last year, and it has worked perfectly fine up to this point. However, for the past 2 months or so, my computer will randomly go to a blue screen and log me out. Also, Safari will crash several times (it had never crashed on me until the blue-screen problem started. Both of these issues surfaced at the same time). For the most part, the blue-screening problem only happens when I'm using the internet, but sometimes it will happen when I am offline as well. This is an infrequent/inconsistent problem, though. It will blue-screen and Safari will crash one week, but then it will be perfectly fine for the next three or four weeks. What's wrong/how do I fix it?

    Hi JRC8.8,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in trying to troubleshoot this issue. You may want to see if your MacBook Pro will boot directly to the Apple Hardware Test, as outlined in the following article:
