IBook Blueberry Installation advice

I need some advice on an iBook 20Gb HDD 256Mb system running OS9. I am wondering which version of OSX can I run without any problems and if I can install an Airport card in it for wireless networking. If I can then how is the card installed.
Many thanks

Hi maverick08,
After you have taken into consideration the previously posted advice, if you still intend to upgrade, here is some additional info.
I'm including the Tiger information, just for the sake of completeness. Though, Kappy posted, it is not supported for your Mac model.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look like the images in the above links.
Additional info in these links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that. And then use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
-128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
Panther System Requirements
Additional Panther System Requirements
Tiger System Requirements
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • IBook Blueberry Upgrade Questions

    Hello, all!
My manager is possibly going to be selling his iBook Blueberry clamshell. Here's the specs to my knowledge:
    300 MHz
    32 MB RAM
    New battery
    Air-Port card installed
    CD-ROM (working)
    Dead hard drive
    No Power adapter
So the obvious things on my list of sunk costs is a power adapter, and hard drive (yes, I know it's a pain to install a new hard drive, but hey, it'll be fun.)
    I mostly have 4 questions:
    1. I've heard that in order to make it compatible with > 128 MB sticks of ram, you must upgrade firmware through OS 9. Is that correct? (and how is that done?)
    2. What's the largest hard drive size I can install? I've read from various sources that the logic board won't read more than 128 GB drives, but then other sources say otherwise?
    3. Is it possible to upgrade to a DVD/CD-RW drive? And what models are compatible?
    4. Will it run Tiger if I can squeeze a 512 stick of ram in there?
I'm excited about starting this potential project, and this will also be my first Mac. Heck, it'll be my first Apple product. So any suggestions would be MUCHLY appreciated!!
    Cheers!

OK, so I've answered at least one of my questions, with the usual discrepancies. As per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14870 , the maximum ram is 288 MB PC 66. As per www.crucial.com, the maximum ram is 288 MB PC 133. I trust Crucial's answer, as they seem to know what they're talking about, and understand that the firmware update IS needed. (BTW, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128 is the download for that, and I did find out that OS 9.1 needs to be locally installed on the machine for that to happen.)
This RAM upgrade would put me in spec for 10.4, but no so fast.
I also found out that as per the Tiger 10.4 system requirements (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514?viewlocale=en_US) that Firewire and DVD support are required for Tiger, so I may just be stuck with Panther -- a small price to pay It's not a bad OS, really. Who needs Widgets anyway?
I'm still digging for more info on maximum hard drive capacity for upgrading the hard drive. I didn't find anything in the "firmware update" about the hard drive size being capped, or improved. Anyone?
Also, anyone have input on the DVD-drive (or CD-RW drive) update?

  • USB 1.1 on an iBook Blueberry

I am working with an iBook Blueberry that has until now been a faithful old work horse. Recently I have been unable to printto another old work horse my Epson Stylus 740.
I am attempting to confirm, is the problem the printer, the iBook or both.
In the Chooser, I am able to select the proper printer but I am unable to select a port. That part of the Chooser window is blank.
In Apple System Profiler, Devices and Volume tab the USB0 port showes "No Device Connected" even though the printer is connected there.
How can I isolate this problem beyond this point? Your suggestions will all be appreciated.

Do you know if the printer is USB 1.1 compatible as well as OS 9.
To test in order to isolate the problem, do two things.
1.) Test the printer on another computer, plug it in to maybe a windows pc or another mac to see if its detected, if not, then your problem is probably the printer.
2.) Plug another USB Device into your ibook. (Memory stick, mouse, keyboard etc.) If nothing is detected then the problem is your ibook, either software or hardware or both. But hopefully it is not that.
    Good Luck

  • Rescued iBook. Need Advice.

    Hello to all,
I am the new owner of a donated iBook. I currently have no experience with Mac's at all really. I am a multiple year IT Tech, but my realm of skills only extends through the Windows environment and some Linux. I was recently given an iBook. I know it's an older machine, but I figured I could use it to browse the web and use as a learning experience for the Mac OS's. Being new, I also have a few questions and I am looking for suggestions.
This iBook is currently running OS 8.6. I want to upgrade it, but I am unsure of what OS I should run. I want to find a balance between performance and functionality. I will mainly be using it to browse the internet, check email, occasional YouTube and possibly some music. I will not be using any heavy programs on it. I want an OS that will give some features and functionality, but not be to extreme to bog the system down. I've heard that most run 10.3 and some run 10.4.
I am not sure of the current system specs, but I think it has a very small HD and only 128MB of RAM. I plan on upgrading this today because I do have another HD sitting around and plenty of extra memory.
I am also having issues getting it connected to the internet with the AirPort card. It will see a lot of networks so it is working. However, when I try to connect to my wireless network, it says the password is incorrect. I know these don't like WPA2 so I changed the router settings to WPA/TKIP and it set for b and g. I still have the same issue. I also tried the $ in front of the password and this did not help either.
I know this things needs a lot of work and updates, but I wanted to use it as a learning experience for Mac OS's.
If this were yours, and all you knew was it was running 8.6, where would you start?
Thanks in advance for any advice provided!
    -Sam

Oh I don’t know about that. Your mileage may vary, as every person’s definition of ‘slow’ is different. And perhaps most importantly there are things you can do with Tiger to speed it up on older hardware, like turning off Spotlight as well as minimizing Tiger’s installation to conserve hard drive space if necessary.
I’d say give Tiger a go, because you have nothing to lose. Apparently throwing as much ram as you can at OSX (especially a 256 or 512Mb stick) will make it a happy bunny and give the greatest performance benefit.
I have no idea what would happen with a 1Gb stick. I imagine people like Duane would know. He’s a guy on this forum whose helped me out a lot over the years (as have many others). If I remember rightly, his Clamshell has a 512Mb stick in it, so I’d imagine there’s a good reason for that.
One thing about OS8.6 through to OS9.2.2 though, is that you can get it running on-line if you connect to your broadband hub via an ethernet cable. If you were to do that AND install a copy of ‘Classilla’ then you’d really be flying. ‘Classilla’ is special version of Mozilla written especially for pre-OSX operating systems giving you as up-to-date a browsing experience as is possible.
Most people (myself included), upgraded to OSX because so many internet pages I frequent were becoming broken in my trusty old Internet Explorer 5.1, iCab and whatever else it was I used. Classilla redresses that (not that I’ve used it yet), so you’re supposed to get a much better experience viewing Youtube, eBay and god knows what else.
To be quite honest, if I could go wireless with OS9 and have Classilla, I wouldn’t bother with OSX. But then... my needs are pretty basic. I’m not one for all that social networking and whatnot!
[Edit] although as you've said, if your goal is wanting to expand your knowledge of the Mac side of things, then perhaps its best to go ahead with OSX. Its quite nice. I don't care that much about operating systems, I just want to be able to use my programs without fuss.

  • CR52-M Installation Advice wanted

I bought a brand-new internal CR52-M CD-R/RW unit from Ebay, but after I replaced my old CD-Rom driver with it, and restarted my computer, my system won't either recognise the new unit, or give me the message that "Windows has detected new hardware, etc" so I can install a new driver for it.
Although it will eject / insert a CD, it won't read nor run it.
{1} How do I get my system to recognise the CR52-M so I can install the appropriate driver for it?
{2} I got no installation disc or any other manual, etc, with the CR52-M, so where can I download the appropriate driver software so I can use the thing?
{3} What burner utility would be best for use with the unit?
{4} and will my existing system actually work the damn thing ?
My existing system is a "Viglen" genie 2, 3.3gb with lotsa free memory,  256Mb Ram,  400Mhz, P.II.  running Windows 98se.
Any advice or help would be really appreciated, Thanks,

is the cdrw on the same ide cable as hard drive if it is set jumper on rear of cd unit to slave, if its using its own ide cable eg not connected on the same cable as hard drive then it should be set to master,
nero 6 will work and can be found on ebay for £7 - £8
or easy cd creator 6 also found on ebay for about £8 or less
cd drivers are for getting the cd to work in dos and are no use in windows.

  • Rescued iBook--need some advice!

    Hi everyone.
Started my internship today, and one of my duties was to move "dead" hardware to the pallets for recycling. Amongst these dead items, I saw a Blueberry iBook (no Firewire). After making sure it actually turns on, I decided to ask permission to take it home--and was given the okay!
So, fabulous. I've always thought these machines were fun.
    The catch with this iBook:
It's been turned into a tablet PC (or so it seems). The display got flipped around, keyboard is gone, and the computer does not accept input from a mouse. It will accept input from a keyboard, however.
I'm going to try contacting the company that made the changes to this computer and see if they have any help to offer. Considering this baby's age, I may not get far!
In the mean time, I'd like to be able to access the menus using just the keyboard, and would love to learn any other keyboard commands that anyone has to offer.
Also, if anyone has suggestions for potential uses for this machine, I'm all ears! We may even have a copy of OS X 10.2 lying around that I might install at some point.
    Thanks in advance!
    ~Lyssa

    Hello there!
A great place to buy parts for your iBook is http://www.macsales.com/ they have all kinds of parts for your machine. I've personally bought RAM, a new battery, and HD from them. The ram really helped speed up my install of OS 10.4.11 on my iBook
An easy way to install these new parts in your iBook is to check out the guides over at iFixIt: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/iBookG3Clamshell
I would recommend that you have Torx screwdrivers and regular screwdrivers available when installing.
Also for your question regarding getting 10.4 (Tiger) on your iBook you can use a program called XpostFacto: http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/ that is if you have a CD version of OS X 10.4 if you have a DVD version you would have to upgrade the CD drive to DVD. A good time to do this would be when installing the larger hard drive since the iBook will already be apart.
Don't give up on the Clamshell, they're great old computers

  • Switching Ti Powerbook Airport card to iBook G3 , need advice

    Hello,
I have a Ti Powerbook G4 1GHz running OS 10.4.5 and recently got my husband a G3 ibook 600 MHz running 10.2.8. I want to get him up and running wirelessly so I thought I would install my Airport card in his book and look for something else or my Powerbook. Do all the 3rd party cards hang out of the laptop and/or have antennas that extend? He surfs about three times a week, I am online 2 or more times a day. I would rarther not have somthing that hangs out or can get caught. However I thought it would be a plus to have my system on 802.11g.....
Is there a better solution for his system? I am just looking into it and would appreciate anyone's advice on options for our systems.
    Thanks for your help.
    Ti Powerbook 1GHZ G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Zyvette,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This sounds like a good plan.
The iBook needs an original Airport card that the Ti has.
Check out this site which has the manuals for all Macs - choose your models and the Airport card instructions are in there.
You certainly can put a 802.11g card in your Ti - it will stick out a little, but it's that or spending $100+ or so on a 2nd hand original Airport card on ebay.
Alternatively I have seen one of these cards crammed inside an Airport slot with some modifications - see this post.

  • IBook G4 Installation

    Hi ,
I recently bought iLife '06 and have been trying to install it on my iBook G4. My iBook doesn't have a DVD drive, so I copied the entire ilife06.mpkg to a external hard drive and have been trying to install it from there.
Everything installs except GarageBand (and iDVD).
When I go to try to install the program , it says that there was an error in the installation, and when I try to install it just the GarageBand application it says that I can't install it on this computer!
    Im running a 1GHZ G4 iBook with 512MB of Ram and 10.3.9 .
    Thanks

Try verifying the DVD with Disk Utility.
What exactly does it say on the DVD?
TRy holding the Option key down at bootup & see if the DVD eventually shows up as a boot choice.

  • Ibook blueberry clamshell upgrades

I see people on you tube running mac os x on old ibook clamshell computers how is that possible?
My ibook only reads cd's not dvds.
so how are they installing tiger on a blueberry ibook with no dvd rom drive possible?
I would love to install mac os x on my ibook

Upgrade your firmware (to allow support for larger DIMMs)
Install a 512MB DIMM (you will have to remove the old DIMM, unless it is already a 512MB DIMM)
You can install 10.2 (which comes on multiple CDs)
OR you can install 10.3 (which comes on multiple CDs)
Without FireWire and FireWire Target Disk Mode, you would have to replace your CD drive with a DVD drive (which works but does not quite fit -- sticks out a bit. Then you could install 10.4. You will be limited to one major Application at a time, for example, surfing complex web sites but NOT while Mail is open. With a G3 processor, YouTube Videos and similar stuff will be unwatchable.
If you have only a 6GB drive, installing 10.4 will be very difficult. You will not have room for any substantial user files (no Photoshop, no iPhoto, no iTunes master library).

  • G4 iBook Panther installl discs on g3 iMac

Hello, I am looking to purchase OS X Panther for my old slot loading g3 iMac, and I am wondering if the old install discs for the iBook G4, which some people are selling, will work on my iMac? Please help.

Welcome To  Discussions The Cite`!
Here is some expanded info, on what has already been posted.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
This is the correct one Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger, (DVD) Retail, selling for $159.95, at FastMac.
And at HardCore Mac, selling for $199.99.
Notice that both, are more expensive, than, the The Apple Store (U.S.), selling for $129.00.
As eww posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Tiger and Leopard are on DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

    Tiger On eBay
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Review these KB Articles, for the Panther System Requirements, and the Additional Panther System Requirements.
The posted RAM System Requirement, for all versions of OS X, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.
Info here Installing Tiger Using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
And here Installing Tiger Without A DVD Drive.
The Tiger Media Exchange Program, referred to, is no longer available.
There is also a version available on CDs, at FastMac, for $179.99.

  • Custom Installation Advice

    Greetings-
This question is directed at you monitor gurus and masters of custom installations, creative multimedia installation guys, and anyone with a darn good idea!
Here is the setup: I have a Sharp Aquos 32" LCD TV that I am using as the monitor for my media center. For now I am feeding the HD input from my current video rig that is rack-mounted on the other side of the room. However, I recently purchased a wireless refurb'd Mini for use as a, well, computer. It drives the LCD display via DVI, and only needs a slight Horizontal positioning tweak via the monitor controls.
The monitor is wall-mounted, and initially I thought that I might be able to mount the Mini out of sight and on the wall behind the display. While it turns out that this is technically possible, it would not allow for any adjustment at all in the viewing angle of the display, and changing the horizontal mounting height on the wall is not an option (well, it actually is, but it took some work to do it initially and I am trying to "work smart" here.
However, after receiving my Mini and having had time to grow accustomed to the look of it, I have decided that I will mount the computer on a small glass or other shelf just under the display but on the wall and in full view. It is a work of art, after all, and looks spiffy to boot.
So now to my dilemma: anybody done this? I need a suggestion on an attractive wall mounted support, mini-sized and weight support capable. I am going to mount the power brick out of view so supporting that weight is not important. I do have the ability to hit one stud within the wall with whatever attachment hardware need be, but it is 16 inches on center to the next stud and that would be wider that the mini. Ideally I mount to one stud and do not have to use any mounts within the wallboard to either side of the stud.
So ideally, in my mind's eye, I need a sturdy, centrally supported attractive shelf on which to support my Mini.
What have you creative people got for me?
    Thanks in advance-
    peace

C2R was the name given to the new packaging method, introduced in the  Office2010 timeframe.
C2R uses Application Virtualisation (App-V) and some other components, to "install" and virtualise the file system and registry components of Office. With Office2010 in this format, Office365 was released.
C2R / App-V, has a number of advantages, especially related to streaming and on-demand scenarios, but it requires periodic internet access, and a decent internet connection.
Later, Office2013 was released in a similar, but "improved" fashion - also known as Office365.
One of the significant differences with Office365, is the subscription-based licensing model, and the subscription management components (which require you to login to a Microsoft account to validate and re-validate) are embedded.
Retail editions of Office2013 (Home & Business, Home & Student, Professional) are also released in C2R format.
(Some Retail, non-subscription editions of Office2010 could be obtained in traditional MSI format.)
Currently, non-subscription editions of Office2013, in MSI format, are only available to Volume Licensing customers.
These are specific editions (e.g. Office2013 Standard, and Office 2013 ProfessionalPlus/ProPlus), and are not available in Retail editions.
So, non-C2R is available, to Volume License customers. Which is fine if you are one, and not so great if you aren't one.

  • Portal Installation advice

    Hi experts,
We have a Business Intelligence (BW/BI) instance running, with also J2EE part installed.
Now we would like to use the Web BEx , thus we first need to install the Enterprise Portal.
My question is, what should be the preferable approach to install the EP on a BW ABAP+java running environment? Should I use sapinst run from the DVD, or start from the downloading the software from SAP, or some other approach? Which one should be safer/ quicker?
    Thanks in advance
    Gianni

    Hi.
I recommend to read Master Guide and Technical Infrastructure Guide for planning your installation. You can download both of them from [SAP Service Marketplace|https://service.sap.com/installnw70].
Should I use sapinst run from the DVD, or start from the downloading the software from SAP, or some other approach? Which one should be safer/ quicker?
    It depends on several factors:
    1. an available SR on installation DVD and the level of patches needed to be applied on your system landscape.
    2. an availability and stability of the broadband connection to SAP Service Marketplace.
In any case, it's your choice.

  • Bootcamp installation advice?

I have ordered a Mac Pro and intend to create a dual boot Windows XP / MAC OSX 10.5.2 when it arrives next week.
I plan to take the two existing SATA drives out of my G5 and replace the factory installed SATA in the Mac Pro, meaning that I won't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling all of my software and work.
However, I wanted to ask if using Bootcamp will mean that I have to format one of my existing drives so that it can create a partition?
Any other general advice would be appreciated - I have been through these forums and looked at the Mac help files, but it seems to be pot luck as to whether it works without a hiccup or not!
    TIA

Your new Mac Pro may have a later build of OS X. The only issues are in using Migration Assistant. But that is another topic. One thing, you eventually need to format your drives to GUID from what they are now.
Keep the OEM for your boot drive. Try booting from your G5 system. Pick up a new drive to merge and migrate to.
You can install Windows on its own drive with BootCamp Assistant. Personally, I think you'll be better off with 64-bit Vista Ultimate -

  • Need Installation Advice

I want to install Leopard Server onto a Mac Pro currently running Leopard with many accounts, groups, and shared folders with various permission settings...but I'm afraid to.
Will an installation delete all of the accounts, groups, and permissions that I've already created?
If so, is there a way to export this information and import it when the new system is installed?

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. From everything I've read, however, you can only do a clean "erase and install" or upgrade from a previous version of "server" software.
I've migrated all of the accounts to another machine, and everything is backed up, but I've decided to leave my "startup" disk alone and install the server software on a different drive. If I'm unsuccessful in migrating the accounts back, or recreating all of the accounts and permissions, I can always boot from my original startup disk until I figure out a better way.

  • Installation advice, Thinkpad 520, Ubuntu 11.10

    I'm getting a Thinkpad with Intel+NVidia graphics.
Can anyone offer advice as to what to do during the initial install? Should I disable or enable the NVidea/Intel/Optimus graphics? I belive there is a BIOS option.
I have read about the Ironhide (former Bumblebee) project. Is it worth trying?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Unless you want to venture down the bumblebee path, your best bet may be to simply set the Graphics Device to Discrete Graphics in the BIOS->Config->Display setting. Ubuntu 11.10 should install and run reasonably OK using a 32-bit kernel (see a recent thread about the W520 and 64-bit kernels). If you don't mind installing NVIDIA's drivers, you could try them. You'll likely get a bit better performance out of them, but then you have to deal with re-installing those drivers every time the kernel is updated. This Debian wiki page and some of it's child links have some good discussion on this topic would be a good place to read up: http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers You might run into this problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/699802 if you have a separate /boot partition, but it should be easily worked around for now.
