  • Does the Apple Logo glow in dark?

I am getting a PowerBook G3 Pismo soon, and since its a new world mac, it should have the Apple logo glowing in the dark right? the Wallstreet did not, but I think the Pismo does, right?

But I still like my up-side-down glowing Apple logo.
I do, too. But even more, I like my Apple to be oriented the right way when I close down the display. Yeah, a lot of neat stuff, by way of design, ended with the Pismo, including the extra bay.
    Long live my Pismo
That's the way I feel most of the time, but I been hankering for a MBP, but my wife tells me I have a perfectly fine computer that I have kept upgraded. She's right, of course (as usual), but every now and then I feel like I need a little more zip, especially video RAM, in my computer. In any case, old faithful just keeps rolling along.

  • Laptop like ibook clamshell

okay so i know you guys released that colorful laptop back in 1999 called the ibook clamshell g3, and yeah i know it has horrible hardware and stuff.  So right now, I was wondering if there is any laptops out there like that one that have like the transparency and the colors that that one had.....  either that or i will purchase that good ol laptop..... best regards,
    Tom Hancock

The best of the Clamshells have Firewire, and are upgradeable to Mac OS X 10.4.11. Firewire offers bootable backup capability through a port that is at least 20 times faster than the old USB 1.1 that is found on it.  The downside is the Clamshell never did come with a decent size screen for Mac OS X.
Some people like running Mac OS 9 (predates Mac OS X) better on the Clamshell, but few browsers work well anymore on Mac OS 9, except possibly WaCOM Mozilla.
Be sure if you get it, to get the original discs pre bundled with it.  After the iBook Clamshell, Apple released a long line of white iBook G3, and G4s, then some white and black MacBooks, whereas the rest of their notebooks after the Powerbook G3 Firewire were all aluminum or titanium colored.  Before then they were black as well.  There is an option for current Apple notebooks called Colorware
    http://www.colorware.com/p-250-macbook-air-13-inch.aspx
Suffice it to say you might not always get the warranty you expect on these, but if color is what you want, you can get it on a more modern Apple notebook that way.    I would not get the add on color shells on Apple notebooks after market.  Those can cause them to overheat.

  • IBook freezes at the Apple Logo

I'm trying to help my mother get her iBook ready to take to warmer climates this winter. She transferred all of her data via firewire and now is unable to get it booted up. It gets to the bitten apple logo and won't go any further. I had her try to zap the pram, no go, tried to boot up with the original cd's, no go. All this has been done over the phone so far. Tomorrow she's bringing it in for me to work on. Any ideas where to start?

Check out Apple's Knowledge Base articles on troubleshooting portables that won't turn on or start up:

What version of the OS is running on the iBook?

  • IBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo

iBook will not start up past gray screen w/ apple logo. So I have zeroed out the hard drive and reinstalled tiger. No change except if I start up holding shift it will boot and welcome comes up then black screen that says you must restart by holding down power key.
Zeroed out the HD again with same results. Also I have a iBook G3 with the same symptoms.

What you are experiencing is a kernel panic.
Try starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with the Install disc's Disk Utility, then try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.

  • IBook freezes on Apple logo white screen, NO spinning rainbow wheel

    Hello,
I bought my iBook 12" 1.33Ghz used in May. It has worked flawlessly until two nights ago when I was surfing the web via Airport. Everything started to take forever to load, the spinning rainbow wheel appeared several times, and applications took minutes to switch between. Since the iBook had been on for a few days, I thought it was time to do a reboot to fix whatever was backlogged in the system. It didn't want to respond, so I force quitted all programs. I could click on the blue logo and hit shut down or restart, but they didn't do anything towards a shut down. I finally held the power button to force a shut down. Ever since, when I power up, I get the Apple chime, a gray screen (for less than a second) and then the white screen with the gray Apple logo. There is NO spinning rainbow wheel, as others with similar sounding problems have mentioned. I've cleared the PRAM and PMU, but they didn't help anything. Holding Shift on startup does not do anything differently. It still just freezes on the Apple logo for hours. I did not get a Mac OS X startup disk with my computer. What else can I do to troubleshoot this? Please help, this is my first Mac, and up until 3 days ago, I had all but sworn off PC's, now this thing is acting up too!
Also, I'm guessing which version of Mac OS X I have, is there anyway to confirm without booting? Holding option is the only thing I have found to give me a different startup process, and the mouse pad is very sluggish and there's a watch logo for 20 seconds or so on it.

Hello! Since you don't have the startup disk your best shot is using fsck. Tom
when you re-start, hold down the apple key AND the "S" key You'll start up into a command line interface.. it'll look strange but just hang in there. When it's done booting up, you should see something that looks like this: localhost:/ root# at this point, type in 'fsck -f" please note the space before the dash, and of course, ignore the quote marks, then hit return You computer will no go thru some low level checks on your HD. Most likely you'll get a list of a few files that have problems and this procedure will fix them. This should take about 2 or 3 mins, so don't be in a rush. When the line says "VOLUME WAS MODIFIED", this means that changes were made. At this point you should be back at the same localhost:/ root# prompt. run fsck -f again. Wait for it to finish. if you continue to get the "Volume was modified" message, continue to run fsck -f until you'll get a prompt that says The Volume(your HD) appears to be ok, again with the localhost:/ root# prompt. AT this point, type reboot, hit enter and your computer will start up normally. This is not difficult, but you may want to give it a shot when your feel you have a few moments where you can attempt something new and not stress too much.

  • Ibook g4 stops on tha apple logo when i turn it on

my ibook g4 stops on the apple logo when i turn it on

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds as if it could be having hard drive problems. Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode? If not, I suggest that you give it a try. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
See if you are able to do a little hard drive maintenance to help things out.

  • Sleep light for Retina *idea Glowing Apple logo?

So my first hesistation for writing this is that I think my idea had a flaw. Nontheless, I continue. Is it at all possible for the Apple Logo on the back of the monitor to glow in the same "breathing" pattern as was the old sleep light? I imagine for Power Consumption it might be a negative, but for nostalgic purposes I'm interested. I also wonder if that light is controlled by the backlight on the screen. Anywho, before I go to bed, I thought I share that thought.

    Fimeg,
It would be impossible for just the Apple logo to light up without also lighting the whole display.  The logo, even back in the old Power PC days, is basically a partially translucent cutout in the lid.  The light you see is from the screen backlighting system.  I got my MBP Retina 15" in November and also really missed the flashing light.  The longer you have it, the less you will miss it.  Supposedly this is supposed to be able to sleep on a single charge for approximately 30 days.

  • IBook g4 won't boot past apple logo???

My iBook g4 when powering up makes the chime, then freezes on the apple logo
I've tried PRAM reset, and holding c whislt powering up???
Sorry, I'm not too good at this stuff

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Will it start up in Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455?viewlocale=en_US
(Safe Mode takes a long time to start up compared with a normal startup, so if the progress indicator that looks like a spinning gear shows up, let it go for a long time before giving up on it.)

  • IBook Clamshell installing os problem

Ok I bought a 366 iBook clamshell indigo with firewire port, it has no os when I turn it on it shows me the ? and the finder logo.
So I took the ram out of my other clamshell which brought it up to 320 mb and tried to install osx tiger which I have the cd's for I booted to the disc and the apple logo with white screen came up and the spinning wheel at the bottom then I waited for 30 mins, and no change the wheel was spinning the cd is spinning.
So could it be cd drive? Hard drive I know it was upgraded. or am I not waiting long enough If the wheel is spinning does that mean its working?

The CD drive may have difficulties reading the CD. Try to clean the lens which is located near the middle of with tray with alcohol or clean the CD. If you own a firewire CD / DVD drive you may the installation this way (press alt after powerbutton to choose the  firewire drive as boot drive)
