IBook Clamshell installing os problem

Ok I bought a 366 iBook clamshell indigo with firewire port, it has no os when I turn it on it shows me the ? and the finder logo.
So I took the ram out of my other clamshell which brought it up to 320 mb and tried to install osx tiger which I have the cd's for I booted to the disc and the apple logo with white screen came up and the spinning wheel at the bottom then I waited for 30 mins, and no change the wheel was spinning the cd is spinning.
So could it be cd drive? Hard drive I know it was upgraded. or am I not waiting long enough If the wheel is spinning does that mean its working?

The CD drive may have difficulties reading the CD. Try to clean the lens which is located near the middle of with tray with alcohol or clean the CD. If you own a firewire CD / DVD drive you may the installation this way (press alt after powerbutton to choose the  firewire drive as boot drive)

  • IBook OS Install problems

I am preparing to sell my iBook G3 600 to move up to one of the new G4's.
I deauthorized the computer for iTMS, and then erased the HD a few times. I had upgraded to OS 10.3 and wanted to reinstall the 10.1 that came with it. It just won't take. It either freezes at the happy Mac start up screen. That happy Mac, staring at me with its smug smirk. Sorry. Other times it will freeze just before it gets to the Agreement. If it gets to the install, it just says that there were problems with the install and to try again.
It only has the stock 128 MB RAM, nothing 3rd party at all. Now that I have erased the drive, software restore doesn't do anything for me.
I ran the Apple Hardware test and everything was fine. Maybe my Combo drive is failing? I just don't know.
I do have a FW HD if I could use that in any way to get an OS loaded onto this guy.
    Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi Jeff, Okay lets get this straight---you can boot up using your backup HD--Now your Backup is your primary drive.....
You could try to re-format the disk.
While booted from the backup go to disk utility and choose the iBook's volume and select erase choose the mac extended format
and os 9 drivers(if offered) click erase.
Insert the install disk into the drive and
Restart your computer holding the "option" key after you hear the chime and release it when the blue screen appears.
wait for the computer to finish looking for all bootable drives and select the install disk..then the arrow on the right side. If the disk does not show up hit the arrow on the left to recycle it--if it still doesn't show there may be a prob w/ the disk
from the install you should be able to pick the volume---Your iBook and install---good luck, glynn

  • Safari / Internet Browser problems on iBook Clamshell

    Hi.
I have just purchased an iBook clamshell for my partner off of ebay.
The actual system works fine and it has been updated to OS X 10.3.9 but I have a few problems which I am really frustrated with!
Basically, it needs an update for an internet explorer browser. Everytime we try and go on to Yahoo, Facebook or MSN for hotmail, it just won't load properly. I have run the Java updates and the software update but It still won't work. I tried downloading the latest safari but it wouldn't work because the system was too old!
If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • IBook clamshell wifi problems

I have an iBook clamshell and it has an airport card in it, but it won't let me connect to my home cable modem 802.11n, I entered the password and it always pops up with an error message, what should I do to fix this?

Do you have other computers in the house using that modem?  To acces it, you need to do it by way of ethernet. The IP address you use in your brouser is192.168.0.1  The user id is admin and the password is motorola. If your provider won't help, google the name and model number of the  modem and setup guide to download a guide.

I have an ibook clamshell which was passed down to me from my cousin it was workin fine for a while and i just put it aside so i could save up and upgrade it to tiger. But just yesterday i turned it on and it did what i guess was a disk check which had one button on the left which was to retry the search and another to continue forward.when the search is done it doesnt show anything and when i click forward the page jus either blink(a really quick flash ()rarely though) or does nothing.I have only tried rebooting the clamshell to resolve the problem. Im not sure of the spec of this computer but i know its a ibook clamshell graphite, 1 usb port,,1 ethernet port i believe thats what the firwire or fireware port is, and one other port that the size of a telephone line. Sorry but i am un aware of the mhz and it does not have an airport card installed in it. So if anyone has any idea what i can do to save my laptop besides purchasin a new one please help me thank you.

  • TIGER clean install (PREVIEW problem)

I did a clean install of TIGER - all fine and ok. I then loaded up MS Office for MAC (like I had before on Panther) , then posted some .pdf files (2) to my Public Folder on my iDisk (for my son to access in Canada) - these were originally WORD docs. (in Panther days) with photos in the text and I`d retrieved them from my external HD where I`d backed them up before the `clean install`, like a good boy. I`d saved them as pdf`s to my desktop then dragged them over the PUBLIC icon - they both loaded in due course (albeit very slowly) - I went to check this morning and clicked on one .pdf file expecting it to open in PREVIEW. All I get is the spinning ball and I can`t even force a quit on PREVIEW either. I even tried to access them the same way on my iBook but the same problem occurs.
I`ve repaired Permissions and Verified too but it "still aint a working" - any ideas?
Plain English please as I`m not IT techy.

    From Apple:
Currently, the iDisk is online and operational. We have not received large numbers of reports to indicate that there is an issue with connecting and interacting with the remote iDisk in Mac OS X v10.4.3.
We were able to connect to your iDisk Public Folder and upload a 5 MB file to it on a computer running Mac OS X v10.4.3. We were able to delete this file and disconnect as well.
To further test your ability to copy files to the iDisk, please place a file (that you have tried to upload to the iDisk before) in your computer's Shared folder, which is located in /Users/Shared on the main level of your hard disk.
After doing so, please create a new Mac OS X user account and test to see if the error you reported occurs in a new user. Creating a new user in Mac OS X is actually quite an easy process; it will greatly assist in isolating the cause of the issue you reported.
Please completely review the following AppleCare support article for more information about setting up multiple users in Mac OS X:
Adding a new user account to your computer:
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html>
Once you have created a new user, log out of your current user and then log in to your new test user account. Enter your .Mac user information in the .Mac System Preferences of the new user and then try to upload a file to your remote iDisk.
After testing in the new user, feel free to log back into your normal user.
Please respond to this email and let us know if the issue occurred in the new user. Also, provide the following information:
    1. What is the approximate size of the file you tried to upload?
    2. A step-by-step list describing your actions prior to experiencing this issue.
    3. What is the exact version of the operating system that is installed on your computer?
    4. Please describe your Internet setup, how you connect, and whether you are using any network connectivity devices, such as a router, hub, or wireless base station.

Thats all fine, but it doesn't answer my question. Copying files to the iDisk will CRASH the finder in 10.4.3, forcing me to sometimes having to do a hard reboot when logging out is not possible. I realize the iDisk is a very slow transer process and for this reson it probably won't work for what I need to do, BUT if I do decide to pay 99 bucks to upgrade my trial subscription iwould like to know that apple is working on a fix for this known issue. People who have multiple macs on a network who are running panther on all the computers have no iDisk problems with crashing the finder....put put an Tiger computer on the network and the tiger computer will crash. So is Apple working on a fix to this problem?

    Dear Tim,
    Thank you for contacting Apple.
Copying files to your iDisk is actually a two-step process. In the first step, the Finder prepares a local cached copy of the file to be sent. In the second step, that file is actually transmitted across the internet to your iDisk. The first step is performed as quickly as your hard drive can copy the file, and accounts for the bulk of the work that the Finder believes it has to do to upload your file. This is why the progress dialog reaches the "5 seconds remaining" mark so quickly - the Finder considers its work nearly finished.
At this point, your upload may appear to stall, especially when sending a large file. However, you're really in step two of the process, and your file is actively being transmitted to your iDisk. In most cases, simply leave the progress dialog alone, and your f

  • How Can i get iTunes for My Ibook Clamshell Blueberry Mac OS 9.0 besides Ebay

Hi im The Son Of the Creator Of Gizmosapien, a podcast made in garageband and my internet is out im tethered to my iphone 5c and i dont have a airport card for my ibook so How Can i get iTunes for My Ibook Clamshell Blueberry Running Mac OS 9.0 besides Ebay? Please Help.
    Sincerely yours Son Of Gizmosapien.
    P.S. i have a Macbook Air 2011.

Sadly the iTunes Store was not released until Mac OS X. You'll need Mac OS X 10.1 and iTunes 4 minimum to get to the iTunes Store on your iBook G3 and the ability to download any podcasts from the store.   Since Mac OS X 10.1 wasn't that stable, and few software titles exist for it, I recommend upgrading to a minimum of 10.3.9 which supports iTunes 7.7.1.
Your Blueberry iBook may or may not be compatible with 10.4, as this tip explains:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
If you can get 10.4, you can get iTunes 9.2.1.
You will not be able to sync your phone with the iBook regardless of Mac OS X version.
Your iBook is too old to install an Airport Extreme card, so it can't securely hook up wirelessly to your wireless network.  You'll want a ethernet WiFi bridge that supports a minimum of 802.11g to hook up to the iBook via ethernet.  An Apple Airport Extreme base station can act as one as well via its LAN ports.

  • Uncooperative iBook G4 install

To make a long story short, I bought a refurb iBook G$ that came with no install disks, and no Admin password. Not (then) knowing how to change the Admin password, I elected to buy the 2-DVD Replacement iBook G4 install disks directly from Apple Care. When I tried to install, everything went fine until the iBook ejected the first disc and asked for the second. EVERY time I tried inserting the 2nd disc, I would immediately get an error message telling me I had to try the install from square one. Did that five times, with various buttons pushed and much cursing, with no joy. I asked some questions in the iBook G4 Discussion forum, got some good information but not quite enough. Now I have a System Install dilemma. Please read on/
I found this Apple Support document (http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24615) entitled:
<< Mac OS X 10.4: Repeatedly asked to insert Install DVD Disc 2 during installation...
cutting out a lot of unnecessary verbiage, here are the important points:
If the issue persists, use another Disc 2. If another Disc 2 is not available, you can complete the installation of Mac OS X with just Disc 1; follow these steps:
    1. Hold your Mac's power button until it turns off.
    2. With Disc 1 in hand, press the power button and immediately insert it and hold the C key until you see the Apple logo. Your Mac should start from Disc 1.
    3. Once started from Disc 1, start the installation process again.
    4. When the "Easy Install on 'Macintosh HD'" window appears, click the Customize button. (If your destination volume is not named "Macintosh HD", a different name will appear.)
    5. Uncheck (deselect) the item "Bundled Software". You may need to click it twice to deselect it.
    6. Click the "Install" or "Upgrade" button to begin the installation. Disc 2, which contains additional bundled software, should not be needed for this installation. At the end of the installation you will have a functional Mac to use.
I also unchecked the "Language Translations," "Printer Drivers," and "Additional Fonts" . I should have been smart enough to uncheck "Bundled Software" in the first place.
At any rate, I went ahead with the install, and everything went as it should have done -- almost. When I got to the "Setup Assistant" pane, I started up my PBG4 in Target mode, had a slight glitch when the iBook didn't recognize the connection, reseated the FireWire plugs at both ends, tried again, and it started to transfer info (I unchecked "user accounts" and "files and folders," hoping to transfer just network and other settings, and applications, since my one-disk install didn't include iTunes, etc.). The Setup Assistant pane SEEMED to be OK, and started tranferring information, but the thermometer bar has been stuck at "about 30 minutes to go" for 2 hours now. So I'm still not out of the woods.
So HERE'S the problem: if this Setup Assitant information transfer is still stuck at "30 minutes to go" a couple hours from now, I'm going to need to shut it down, but as there's no "Back" or "Stop" button on the Setup Assistant pane, I don't know how to do it safely. Can someone tell me how to do this or direct me to a pertinent Apple document?
If anyone has any hot tips in the meantime -- like, does anyone think it would help to just get the basic "One-Disc Install" System up, forget the "Setup Assistant," let the system open to the finder and then get all the updates, and THEN do Migration Assistant instead of Setup Assistant? -- I'd be most appreciative for any help
Hot tip: don't buy refurb Apple computers from Computer Surplus, no matter HOW good the price looks.
    Thanks for your time!
    Bart Brown

By my usual process of throwing enough manure against the wall, I have somehow backed into grabbing victory from the jaws of defeat.
To make a long story as short as I can, I have followed many of the suggestions here and on the OS X 10.4 Discussion Installation & Setup forum, and I've apparently succeeded in producing a stable, fully functional iBook G4:
After having the problem with disc 2, I let the iBook stew all Saturday night running a 35-pass security erase, which REALLY erased the disk, and the successful completion of which yesterday morning gave what I hoped was a pretty good indication that the drive read/write heads and other HD mechanisms were working without problem.
I ran a non-"bundled software" install, which required only the first disk. When I got to Setup Assistant, I put one of my PBG4s into FireWire Target Mode, and connected the other end of the FW cable to the iBook.
As previously related: "The Setup Assistant pane SEEMED to be OK, and started tranferring information, but the thermometer bar has been stuck at "about 30 minutes to go" for 2 hours now..."
After a total of 5 hours of Setup Assistant still reading "transferring information," and the thermometer bar STILL stuck at "about 30 minutes to go," and no answer if there was a safe way to shut down the process, I said what the **** and shut down the Target Mode PBG4, disconnected the FireWire cable, and worked my way through the rest of the Install steps to completion and restart.
Upon restart, I opened the iBook's drive and read the Setup Assistant's error log: it turned out that Setup Assistant migration had transferred absolutely everything I specified except some RealPlayer components, which hardly broke my heart.
Since Install Disc DVD 1 was still in the iBook's optical drive, I option-booted to the Apple Hardware test and ran the extended version -- no problems encountered.
After I re-started from that, I ran Software Update, and wandered off to contemplate my navel while the quite large updates slowly (Comcast on a Sunday night) worked their way onto my HD.
Finished updates, ran Maintenance (permissions, etc.), which I do as a totemic warding off of evil spirits after every major update. Restarted, in a fit of OCD, booting into Apple Hardware Test, ran extended test again. No problems.
Set up my wife's account, put in the Airport network password, and it hooked up immediately, as did Safari (anyone who still runs a PC should see just this operation alone -- connecting immediately to the net, and not worrying if you have enough virus protection to protect your system for the first 11 nanoseconds you're online -- it would create more converts than a thousand Apple Guy - PC Guy ads)
Ran full maintenance suite from ICE Clean! v2.5 for OS X 10.4 ("...a powerful System Maintenance and Optimization Tool using only UNIX built-in System Tasks," says the blurb). I also use Titanium's "Maintenance" and "Onyx," because I'm anal-retentive.
After all that rannygazoo, I sat down and ran some apps, went online and dug around in my usual haunts (including here).
Bottom Line: Everything works so far. I can't find any glitches (yet), and the iBook has passed every test I've run on it.
My sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to solving this problem. Without the help here, the iBook would be sitting on the bottom of the pond across the street.
BTW, there seems to be some confusion about where I acquired this iBook. eBay was in no way involved. I bought it directly from Surplus Computer online. When I got it I found they had provided NO Admin password and NO install disks. To rectify that situation requires (according to their tech support) that you return the iBook to them, and they supposedly "change" and give you the new Admin password, charging a $25.00 tech fee to do so, and send the iBook back to you, ALL postage both ways at customer expense. Does that sound like a scam to anyone else? BBBOnline of San Jose, CA thinks so, and I'll be sending the details of this transaction to them posthaste.
On the other hand, now that I know how (and have the install discs) to get past this deceitful practice, $329 for a working (eventually!) 12" iBook G4 isn't a bad deal. Working on my 27" iMac, I thought the 12" iBook would require an electron microscope, but it's not a bad size at all, and definitely compact.
    Anyway, thanks again.
    Here's a greenie!

  • Is there a way to make the Time Capsule compatible with the iBook Clamshell (2000 not 1999)?

We upgraaded our router to the new time capsule over christmas break and it works great but our old ibook clamshell doesnt work with it. is says an error has occured when i try to connect to it.
Is there someway to connect the Clamshell?
    Thanks!

What type of security is defined for your wireless network?  I may be wrong, but I don't believe that the AirPort Card supports anything better than the very weak WEP encryption.  It also only works on the 2.4 GHz band.  I'm presuming you configured the Time Capsule to support that band.

  • Mac mini and the old mac iBook clamshell

Does anyone know if the old iBook clamshell can be used as the monitor and keyboard with the Mac mini? I've got one and I'd like to be able to use it.
What about the the old iMac blueberry bubbles/OS 9.2. Can I use this with a Mac mini as the monitor, keyboard and mouse?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The simple answer to your question is that no, your iBook or iMac can't be used the way you hope. Neither has any way to get the mini's video output into the iBook or iMac for display purposes. Obviously the iMac keyboard can be used with the mini, but not the iBook's.
This question comes up regularly here in one form or another, with users hoping to use laptops or iMacs as input/out devices for a mini, but it can't be done. What can be done in many situations is to connect the mini and 'host' system by ethernet and use a VNC solution (such as Chicken of the VNC http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/) to control the mini from the host. basically the mini appears in a window on the host system's desktop. However most, if not all, VNC-type solutions will require that the host is running MacOS X, not OS9 or earlier, and even when it does work, performance is really not that great. Aside from that, a screen, keyboard and mouse is required for the mini's initial out-of-the-box setup anyway.

  • Where can I get a new adapter for my iBook clamshell model M6411?

Hi, my iBook clamshell is a little ancient but in perfect working order.  However, the power cord is completely damaged and emits blue sparks when plugged in, so need a replacement.  Does anyone know where I can get a replacement from?  I tried ebay and have tried several online shops but the ones I have been sent for this model have all had the wrong size end to go into the laptop.
Its an ibook clamshell, blueberry and is model M6411.  The adapter is the 45w power adapter.  Can anyone help me please?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It looks like this one should work:
    http://computerlogin.com/sales/productfilePHP/Y_Apple_Clamshell/200/Y_Apple_Clam shell_z_0033.php
I'm not familiar with that seller. Other World Computing has a replacement adapter:

It's more than double the price, but I'm sure that they are a reputable merchant.
Likewise, iFixit is a known seller:

  • When trying to uninstall iTune (because the current install has problems), I get the error message 2324.  What should I do to reinstall the application?

When trying to uninstall iTune (because the current install has problems; iTune error message states it cannot sync and that I should reinstall the application; also, it fails when I tried to upgrade to the latest release), I get the error message 2324.  What should I do to reinstall the application?

That installer error is a "Can't open file" error
It suggest that you may have a corrupt file.
    Try running a disk check
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors
If it fixes errors try uninstalling iTunes again.
If that doesn't work, is it possible for find out the name of the problem file, is further information available? Try looking in your Action center - that's on the control panel. Another place is in the Windows Error logs. From the start menu , right click on "Computer" and select manage, then Event viewer.
If nothing emerges, try a manual uninstall of iTunes and related programs according to this method:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Don't worry if an uninstall fails, that is expected. Go on to the part where you have to delete files (2. Verify iTunes etc completely deleted) . Hopefully you manage to find a file that can't be deleted, that is the one we will need to deal with.
