Ibook connects to airport only

I have an older iBook and also and older airport base station model M8440 snow extreme. My iBook connects to the internet through airport but I have a second computer which is a pc.The airport base station doesn't connect. I took the pc down to the library since I know there wifi works and the pc got the internet there no problem so I know its not the computer. When I get home same old thing happens where it doesn't get a signal. I have spent hours looking for different updates to get but there isn't any available for an old g4 with a 10.4.11 osx. Please help with any suggestions that might help solve my problem.

The "Dual Ethernet" (aka Snow) AirPort Base Station is only capable of broadcasting a 802.11b wireless network and with a maximum of WEP for wireless security. You don't specifically call out what Windows OS and or wireless capability it has, but I would suspect that it is newer than the iBook ... and thus capable of accessing 802.11g and possibly 802.11n wireless network that are secured with WPA or WPA2.
If you temporarily disable wireless security on your AirPort, can the PC connect now?

  • Old ibook connected to Airport extreme on Intel iMac looses internet.

For the third time in a year since I got my new iMac Intel Core Duo machine the wireless connection between it and my old 2001 ibook (with and external USB --afterthemac.com) wireless device has lost the internet connection for the ibook. I am using the iMac as a airport base station with my iBook and it has worked flawlessly for most of the time since Feb when I got my new iBook but this is now the third time (for no apparent obvious reason to me) that while the System Preferences for the USB wireless device show a 70-75 strength connection via airport my internet (entourage email, safari browser) and wireless printing are all dead.
The last two times it happened I did a permissions fix on the iBook (nothing happened) and then reinstalled the driver for the USB wireless dongle. And I got the internet and printing through the printer on my iMac back. This did not work this time. I am set to Automatic in my Network preferences and am using use DCHP and have an ip address and such that are dynamically assigned. -- that still shows.
I have also rebooted my iMac, stopped and restarted airport on my iMac "base station" (afer a minute) and still no internet but the system preferences still show a wireless connection. I have run out of ideas to connect and wonder what else I a missing but some sites I have looked talk about the mysterious loss of inernet (while wireless appears to be working fine).
What is really weird is I also tested a Zen-Cart-MySQL server running on my localnet of my iMac and I actually got a connection of sorts by my ibook (once) today. It displayed the text portion of my Zen-Cart test screen but no graphics -- did not work next time. So it appears I almost have a connection of sorts with my iMac from my iBook but definately not an internet connection.
One final note, my new Intel iMac is connected to my cable modem via an old Netgear router (which is working fine for the iMac). I do not suspect there is any reason for this to be the problem since the ibook is using the shared connection of the iMac. But thought I would mention.
The ibook as I mentioned is the old 2001 dual USB model (white) it has only about 400 MB ram, a 10GB HD (but works great for email and web browsing for my wife). It has OS X 10.4.4, I have not bothered upgrading it any further because the HD has only about 2 GB of space free and other than this now third time of losing the internet connection it has worked fine and I hate to mess up this email/web machine my wife uses.
So if anyone has ideas of where I can go next to troubleshoot I would appreciate it.
    Thanks

Ok appears I solved my problem but not sure why.
While I was posting this around I stumbled on a solution so my question is why. I read somehwere about rebooting the router even thoug it is connected to the iMac and my internet works fine there. Well I rebooted that and the internet for my ibook came back instantly. So since the ibook is sharing the imac connection to my cable modem via rouer using the airport on the iMac why would the router block my iBook and not iMac that is directly wired to the old router (it is not a wireless router)
I want to learn why this now works so I can deal with it more effectively in future.
    Thanks,

  • Powerbook (osx.3.8) has no tab to use ppp to connect via airport (only tcp)

My dsl company and the supplied modem apparently require me to use ppp or ppoe via airport to connect to the internet. This works OK for my ibook which is running Tiger.
But my wife has a powerbook running os 10.3.8 and the weirdest thing happens. When I select airport in network preferences, it doesn't offer ppp as an option (as it does in tiger), only tcp/ip. PPP is an option when I select ethernet as the connection, but when I switch to the airport setting, ppp disappears. The tcp/ip tab is the only one available... and the drop-down options are all things like dhcp, boot p, and manual... not ppp or ppoe as in tiger.
At one point both computers were connecting successfully, but my wife forgot to have us pay our dsl bill and the signal was suspended for a few days. After that, I had to reset a few things. The Ibook learned to reconnect but not the Powerbook.
How do I get the airport ppp tab to appear in 10.3.8 as it does in Tiger? Or is there another fix for this problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi filmanowicz,
I do not think this is your issue. Selecting airport on a computer will allow it to connect to an airport base station which usually use DHCP to gives an adress to your computer.
It is the base station that need to negociate the PPP connection with your provider; not each and every computer that log onto your WLAN (wireless local area network).
Therefore, your wireless base station must be configured with your PPPoe user name and password. It will then negociate with your DSL modem an WAN connection and then provide to your wireless network with local adresses.
You should review your setup to make sure your base station is properly connected, and then setup each of your computer to airport. If you use any wireless protection like WPA or WEP, you need to enter the password for each computer.

  • Macbook pro connects to airport extreme only 50% of the time

    Hi,
I have a mac book pro that i use with an airport extreme unit. When the laptop comes out of hibernation it does not connect to airport extreme. I have to put it back to sleep and start for the second time for it to connect. Any ideas on what the problem is?
    thanks!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi Laurent,
although I was given the advice earlier that I should simply take the machine back to the shop, or call the help centre, I ended up just praying that it would be OK.  A couple of days after I posted the message I think there was an update to download and install, just a regular one from Apple from the Software Update option for the operating system or it may have been one for Final Cut Pro X, and once it installed I never had the problem again, so my prayers were answered.
It was pretty scary at the time because I thought it must be some hardware malfunction, but because it was resolved through an update it suggested it was a software issue.  Hopefully it is the same with you.
I'm now running 10.7.2 and have had no recurrence of the problem in many months, thankfully.
It might have nothing to do with it, but the only other two things that may have somehow caused errors in the system startup (and I doubt these will be "unrelated" to people who know how computers work better than I do, but I feel I should mention them just in case), but I also updated Final Cut Pro X from a glitchy version to version 10.0.2 around the same time, and I also had an application installed which didn't function correctly in OS10.7 called PowerController (a simple app that can start up the computer at a set time and play music from iTunes as an alarm clock) and it was in the group of apps that were set to start at the starting up of the computer.
Anyway, I hope your problem is resolved as easily.  Pray about it too!

  • IBook G4 512Mb Airport connection speed drops to nothing.

I have (last week, following a disk crash!) upgraded from an iBook G3 to an iBook G4. Both machines on 10.4.6.
I have a Netgear wireless router using WEP, which hasn't changed.
With the old G3, I always enjoyed fast wireless connection (even on 802.11b), but since the change, I have experienced alarming performance problems.
I have installed the latest Airport 2005-001 update.
    Problem:
Connected via ethernet cable, all fine.
Connected via Airport, full strength signal appears (and this never changes - the iBook is most often right next to the router anyway).
But after maybe 15, 30 minutes, internet connection speed (most notably on Safari sessions) drops to zero. It may be my imagination, but email still seems to work.
As I say, the signal strength never wavers. It must be something up with the iBook/internal Airport. I have read other posts elsewhere about similar problems when using 1.5 Gb memory, but these were apparently solved with Airport 2005-001.
    Any ideas gratefully tried!

A follow up... for anyone else encountering this issue.
    I found the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106799
and followed what it said about setting up specific 'Locations' for the different connection types (broadband ethernet, wireless and dialup), and specified explicit DNS server IP addresses, and all now seems well.
Why this is so different following the change to the G4 I have no idea.
I also added 512 Mb of memory (after testing the above)!

I have an older iBook and also and older airport base station model M8440. My iBook connects to the internet through airport but I have a second computer which is a pc. Or you can assign a static IP address on the computer it self.
If it is a MAC computer then click on APPLE icon. Go to system preferences. Click on Network and select Ethernet. Go to Advanced settings and go to TCP/IP settings. Change the configuration to Manual and assign a static IP address to the computer.
If it is windows computer then open Network connections. Right click on Local area connection/ wireless network connection and go to properties. Click on Internet protocol TCP/IP properties. Assign a static IP address.

  • IMac G5 (Rev. A) can't connect to AirPort Express

We have 2 Macintosh computers at home; one Mac mini G4 1.42GHz (model M9687LL/B) with built in AirPort Extreme card; and one iMac G5 (Rev. A) 1.6 GHz (model M9363LL/A) also with an AirPort Extreme card.
The mini was bought new, while the iMac was used when we bought it. When we bought it, the company (who were selling old Macitosh computers previously rented to other companies) installed and additional 512 MB of RAM (on top of the 256MB already in it) as well as the AirPort Extreme card. We then upgraded the OS from 10.3.9 Panther to 10.4.4 Tiger. Then we used a FireWire cable to copy the harddrive of my dads work computer (iMac G4) to the new one. We then took it home.
At home we had a linksys wireless router (model BEFW11S4) which we used to connect to the internet. Connected to this wireless network was an AirPort Express unit which we used to stream music to the downstairs stereo. However, the linksys router caused many problems, one of them being that everytime we started a computer, the router needed to be restarted to be able to send a signal so we could connect to the internet.
Eventually, we got feed up with this, and took the AirPort Express unit upstairs and replaced the linksys with it. We installed it, and it worked fine. Upstairs (location of Mac mini, the signal strength was always 4 or 3 (the little icon in the menu bar), but downstairs (where the iMac's located), the signal stayed at about 3, or sometimes 2.
After about a week, the downstairs signaled started to be more 2 than 3, but this made no real difference to us, since it still worked. Then, yesterday, it went down to 1, but still worked. Then, today, it stayed at 1, then totally disconnected. When we click the symbol in the menu bar, we can press on the wireless network to tell the computer to connect to it, but it only comes up with a box saying that the computer could not connect to it.
We have tried more or less everything to get it to work. Turning on and off the AirPort Extreme card in the computer, updating the AirPort Express firmware, restarted computers, the whole lot! But it still wont work!
My dad has borrowed an old iBook with a G3 800MHz processor running 10.3.9 Panther. The iBook has an AirPort card in it (not AirPort Extreme), but even downstairs, it gets full (or sometimes 3) connection. I even tried the basement, and it still works!
So my question is, why won't the iMac even connect to the network? Any help is greatly appreciated!
    iMac G5, 1.6GHz, 768MB, AirPort Express   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'm having a very similar problem with my iMac. I moved the airport down to the basement last week. Reception was at 3, but droped quickly to 2 and 1 and eventually the iMac lost the connection to the airport.
I brought the airport back to the office where the iMac is located and where the airport used to be, but I was unable to join the network again, even though the signal was received by the computer. I downloaded a widget for the dashboard that showed full strength of the signal.
While having these problems with the iMac, I don't have any problems connecting with my iBook to the network. Since I was able to connect to the airport via the iBook, I changed some of the settings, but nothing really helped except disabling wireless security. Agter that I was able to connect to the network via the iMac again, but only for a couple of minutes until the network disappeared again.
I'm reading about lots of other people having problems with the airport recently. So I suspect that this has to do with the recent OS X update. Hopefully somebody at Apple is looking at this problem right now!

  • IBook connects to 'net, but MacBook won't

I have an iBook G4 (wife's Mac) and a newer Macbook. Both connect to the 'net via a wireless router (D-link DIR-615). This morning, for no apparent reason, I suddenly was unable to connect to the web on my Macbook. The iBook connects with no problem. I tried restarting the Mac, the cable modem and the router, but that didn't work.
When I run diagnostics, it gives me a 'green light' for Airport, Aiport Settings, and Network Settings, but says the ISP failed. When I plug into the ethernet port from the router, it still doesn't work! The only way I can connect is if I unplug the router altogether and plug in the ethernet directly from the modem to the Macbook. Any tips??

No responses yet, so I'm just adding this info in case it helps someone figure out what my issue might be.
I brought my Mac to work and was able to connect to the wireless network w/ no problem. I'll take it home tonight to see if that someone resolved this mysterious issue, but I'm not counting on it...

  • Connecting via AirPort Express: Performance Help Needed.

    Hello,
I'm grateful for ideas, instruction, pointers to threads I may have missed re: improving performance/determining the cause of poor performance when connecting via AirPort Express.
The deal: Up to 6 devices are connected to our AirPort Express. Only three of these are ever used simultaneously, though all remain "on," in either sleep or hybernate mode. Performance across the network is terribly uneven. Current data rate stats (a snapshot by way of the AirPort utility, in order of distance from the router):
    iMac: 130 Mb/s
    Printer: 54 Mb/s
    Macbook Pro: 144 Mb/s
    iPhone: currently "off"
PC (Connected via Belkin USB-type Wireless Adapter): 2 Mb/s
    iPad: 39 Mb/s
Note: the Macbook Pro is often located in a room farthest from the hub, some 120 feet away and with partial direct line of site. Still, its performance is unimpeded.
At first glance, logic would dictate the worst problem is on the PC and caused by the Belkin adapter. But I've swaped that out for different USB solutions. Performace is seldom improved.
    Wondering if:
    a) The PC problem is in the data transfer rate of the PC bus. (Foregive me if I'm using "bus" incorrectly here. I'm guessing you'll know what I mean.) Or is it the nature of the USB adapters?
    b) Please also note that the Printer, which sits close to the router, often has a drop in data rate, sometimes to the single digits.
Again, I'm grateful for ideas, instruction, or pointers. Also for wisdom on "extending" the network, perhaps by adding another AirPort device. I'm rather clueless about such stuff.
Thanks in advance-  Best for the weekend-

    Thanks,
I'm pretty sure the card is seated properly (it works most of the time after all). I couldn't get it to work when I installed it because it wasn't seated properly, I pushed it in as far as it could possibly go and it has worked since (except after extended periods of use). The Airport express is three feet from the eMac with only a couple of bits of wood between them. The connection does not go down at times which I can link with the use of any particular appliances (When the eMac stops working, the iBook is always fine, even in a similar position). It is the apparently time-dependent aspect that I can't figure out (I only notice it on those, fairly infrequent, occasions when I am online for a few hours at a time). The eMac discussion group is a good tip. Ta.

  • Help ! - Connection between airport extreme and airport express

I have a home network with an iBook connecting wirelessly to an aiport extreme base station and an iMac connecting through an Airport Express, which has been configured as a relay to the base station (extending its range). The iMac is on the fourth/attic floor of my house; the iBook on the main floor.
The iMac has a printer attached to it; the iBook does not.
I have only intermittently been able to "see" the printer from my iBook and to print to it. Simiarly, i have only been intermittently been able to pull files from the iMac on to the iBook. I have no trouble connecting to the internet with either machine.
Why does the network keep dropping the airport-express-connected imac (and printer)? what can i do? help!

Sounds like an interferance problem to me. Do you have a cordless phone? You can try changing the channel on the AEBS or enable internet robustness.

  • How do I connect my airport extreme to wifi as a repeater

how do I connect my airport extreme to wifi as a repeater?

    Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately, Apple has designed their routers to only extend or repeat the wireless signal from other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that the AirPort Extreme would be able to extend or repeat a wireless signal from another manufacturer's router.
I suppose that it could not hurt to try, but if the Extreme is still unopened, it might be a better idea to return the Extreme, get the information about the router at the neighbor's and then use a product from the same manufacurer that would be compatible to repeat or extend the wireless.

  • How can I print from my IPAD3 to a printer connected to Airport Express?

How can I print from my IPAD3 to a printer connected to Airport Express? I have a HP printer and I can print from all my Windows PC and iMAC in the house. How can I print from my IPaD?

    You cannot.
The USB port on the AirPort Express allow sharing a printer with Windows and Mac OS X, not with iOS:
"Wireless printing over USB requires a compatible printer and OS X v10.2.7 or later, Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7":
    http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/#wireless-printing
"AirPrint-enabled printers  connected using Bluetooth or shared through a USB port of a Mac, PC, AirPort Base Station, or Time Capsule are not supported":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356
The HP ePrint app also does not provide such functionality:
Can I print from the HP ePrint mobile app using USB or Bluetooth?
No. You can only print directly to supported HP printers on a local wireless network.

I have my Time Machine on an external drive (not connected to Airport Extreme) and I have an external HD attached to airport extreme. Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme. How?

Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • Can Time Machine back up a external hard drive connected to Airport Extreme

I recently purchased a new macbook pro, and airport extreme.
I attached a 750 GB external hard drive to the macbook pro, and reformatted it so time machine made the initial back up and hourly back ups from there.
Is it possible to now to unattach the external hard drive and attach it to the airport extreme, where the mac book time machine will back up to the external hard drive through airport extreme?
i have seen conflicting posts is if this is possible.

    That would probably be safest.
Note that Apple's position on this got even more negative with Snow Leopard: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
It does work well for some folks, not so well for some, and not at all for others.
I got a refurb dual-band model in September. It worked well for about 3 months, but lately I get the error 109 and corrupted backups every few days, that Disk Utility can't fix. Once, Disk Warrior could, but since then, if they're corrupted, nothing helps. That's on a year-old Seagate drive that seems fine otherwise, especially when connected directly.
And I have an excellent wireless connection; it's only about 10 feet from my Mac, speeds are great, S/N ratio is good, etc.
It makes no sense to me that a TC would work better, but they seem to.

  • Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7

The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.
