Ibook crashed - need to copy Ipod to itunes

My only library is now on my ipod.
I want to copy that Ipod library to my other computer,
I've seen a number of posts with varying fixes for this.
I have the 40GB click wheel ipod.
1 - Is it better to do this through Itunes or software like yamipod?
2 - If I do it through Itunes what is the best procedure and how do I insure that the Itunes library on my other computer does not wipe out the library on my Ipod?
thanks in advance

You can't do it through iTunes. Yamipod is excellent (used it a lot).
There's also Senuti.

  • Applescript for copying iPod to iTunes Library

I'm kind of new to applescript, but this is what I want the script to accomplish:
    1. Copy iPod to iTunes Library
    2. Sync and Eject iPod
    3. Delete iTunes Library
I want to do this to free up space on my Mac. If I was to add more songs to it, I'd want to repeat the process. Is there anyway to accomplish this?

Transfer to the iPod is designed to be one way - iTunes to iPod. While there are means for coping data back from an iPod they're time consuming, and recreating the complete library only to sync it back to the iPod seems redundant. However there's no reason not to run your entire iTunes library from the external drive - you don't have to reimport it to the internal drive.

  • I need a copy of recent iTune song order.

I was emailed a receipt of purchase but that has been deleted and I need a copy of sales for reimbursement at work.
How can I get a copy?  Can I get another receipt emailed to me?  Why can't I talk to an iTunes team member instead of discuss

  • Hard drive crash, need to get ipod songs back onto itunes

i'm a bit computer illiterate and need step by step instructions for how to connect my ipod without losing everything. if you've done this before and you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.
i downloaded senuti but i don't know what to do from here...

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
There are various programs out there for recovering photos from an iPod, have a look at the ones below. If you search the internet you can find more. Just be aware that what you'll be recovering will be photos optimised for the iPod so they won't be the same quality as the original full resolution versions:
    iPodPhotoCopy Windows only
    CopyPodPhoto Windows only
Tansee iPod Transfer Photo Windows only
iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
Keith's iPod Photo Reader Mac only
If you have full resolution copies of the photos on the iPod have a look here: Apple Knowledge Base article - Use Disk Mode to copy photos from iPod
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive

  • Computer crashed - need to sync ipod w/ library

My computer crashed. I've downloaded iTunes 7.6 on a new computer. When I log in, my iTunes library is empty. I pulled in my iPod and it says that it's synced to another computer (yes, the one that is dead). • Need to copy ipod content straight to an external drive - help please.

I know I need third party software to transfer my music back to my pc from my ipod. I was not able to save it directly onto the hard drive - but can anyone recommend a good and reliable one please?
I have just had a really bad experience with 'ipod to computer transfer' who took my money and ran!
Could really do with some good advice.

    Hello eyam steve,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
You don't necessarily need any software to help you do this, but what you decide to do is entirely up to you.
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Copying ipod to itunes

For some reason, some of the music on my itunes has vanished into cyberspace, however, it is still on my ipod. How can I make the itunes list the same as myipod list, as the ipod has my complete music. Please help, otherwise I fear I will lose 1/2 my music collection.
    Cheers,
    Jonathan

1). If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. • Need to restore iPod, but iTunes won't let me...

Apparently, I disconnected my iPod the wrong way (I will admit to that) and now I need to restore it. That is fine and dandy, I don't mind. But whenever I go into iTunes to perform the restore, it's giving me a funny message and it won't let me do it. It says something like not having the proper update or proper software, but the silly thing is, I don't have the option to update it and I shouldn't have to anyway, because I just got the dang thing a week ago! This is very upsetting, and I hope someone here can help. It is a 30 GB 5th gen.

I know the difference between restoring and updating, it's just that when I go to restore it, I get two buttons. One says restore, and the other, which is faded out anyway, says update. But when I click restore, I get a message saying that it can't restore. I am actually having problems getting my computer to even recognize the iPod right now, so I can't tell you what the message said specifically. Only that it said that I could not restore the iPod because I didn't have the right kind of update or software to do so. I'll keep working on it and see if anything changes, but right now, not much progress is being made.
